Abstract:The representative TiO2 loaded with cocatalyst (e.g., Pt) have been used extensively for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction in solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, it still suffers from low efficiency, due to the weak adsorption/activation of CO2. In this work, an MgAl layered double oxides (MgAl-LDO) was successfully introduced into the interface of Pt/TiO2, by in-situ deposition of MgAl layered double hydroxides and subsequent high temperature calcination. The structure, optical property and the photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction of as-fabricated Pt/MgAl-LDO/TiO2 were experimentally investigated. Especially, the roles of MgAl-LDO during the CO2 reduction process were highlighted. It concluded MgAl-LDO possessed Lewis acidic and Lewis basic bifunctional roles that enhanced the performance of the photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The optimal yields of CO and CH4 of Pt/MgAl-LDO/TiO2 exhibited ca. 2 and 11 times as high as that of Pt/TiO2, respectively. The adsorption states of CO2 and the adsorbed species in the course of photoreduction of CO2 with H2O vapor on Pt/MgAl-LDO/TiO2 were examined by in-situ infrared spectroscopy. Monodentate carbonate (m-CO3 2−) and monodentate bicarbonate (m-HCO3 −) were found to be the main surface species that adsorbed. In the presence of H2O, m-CO3 2− species could be readily converted to active m-HCO3 − intermediate, which was subsequently transformed into surface CO2 −. This was attributed to the fact that MgAl-LDO contains much more strong Lewis basic sits for CO2 adsorption to produce m-CO3 2− and the Lewis acid sites for the dissociation of H2O into H+ and OH groups. Moreover, photoluminescence spectra further indicated that oxygen vacancy existed in the interface of MgAl-LDO/TiO2, which facilitated the photogenerated charges separation and also contributed to the enhanced photocatalytic performance. As a result, the Lewis acidic-basic characteristics of MgAl-LDO, as well as the improved charges separation, should be responsible for the increased photocatalytic activity of Pt/MgAl-LDO/TiO2 toward CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O is a fascinating approach to convert CO2 into available fuels using solar energy as driven force. However, it still suffers from low efficiency owing to the instinct stability of CO2. In this work, a hybrid photocatalyst of rutile TiO2 nanorods supported on MgAl layered double oxides (TiO2/MgAl-LDO) were designed and facilely fabricated via an in situ growth followed by a high temperature calcination process. The resulted TiO2/MgAl-LDO demonstrated significantly enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with the optimal CO and CH4 evolution of 0.65 and 1.60 μmol in 8 h reaction under ambient temperature, which is ca. 4.6 and 48 times that of TiO2 respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a strong electron interaction between TiO2 and MgAl-LDO, as well as electrochemical characterization showed enhanced photocurrent, suggesting a promoted charge separation in photocatalytic process. CO2-temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD) unveiled the relatively active bicarbonate, bidentate carbonate and monodentate carbonate species were formed on MgAl-LDO, which could boost the CO2 reduction half-reaction. Meanwhile, NH3-TPD revealed acidic sites existed in TiO2/MgAl-LDO, which could act as active sites for H2O adsorption and activation and thus promote the H2O oxidation half-reaction. The strategy of simultaneous promotion on the reduction and the oxidation half-reactions will open a new vane to fabricate highly efficient catalysts toward photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O.

Abstract:series of Ti/Li/Al ternary layered double hydroxides (TiLiAl-LDHs) with different Ti:Li:Al molar ratios were prepared by a coprecipitation method for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. It was demonstrated that the contents of anions between the layers of Ti/Li/Al-LDHs greatly determined the photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction. With Ti:Li:Al molar ratios optimized to be 1:3:2, the largest contents of CO_3^2 − anion and hydroxyl group were obtained for the Ti 1 Li 3 Al 2 -LDHs sample, which exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction, with CH 4 production rate achieving 1.33 mmol h −1 g −1 . Moreover, the theoretical calculations show that Ti 1 Li 3 Al 2 -LDHs is a p-type semiconductor with the narrowest band gap among all the obtained TiLiAl-LDHs. After calcined at high temperatures such as 700 °C, and the obtained TiLiAl-700 sample showed much increased photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction, with CH 4 production rate reaching about 1.59 mmol h −1 g −1 . This calcination induced photocatalytic enhancement should be related to the cystal structure transformation from hydrotalcite to mixed oxides containing high reactive oxygen species for more efficient CO 2 reduction.
Synthesis of 2D/2D CoAl-LDHs/Ti3C2Tx Schottky-junction with Enhanced Interfacial Charge Transfer and Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:The layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are potential non-noble metal photocatalysts. Unfortunately, the intrinsic activity of bulk LDHs is relatively low, which limits their use. Herein, the ultrathin, porous and vacancy-rich CoAl-LDHs nanosheets were prepared by exfoliation strategy. Then, they were assembled with the early transition-metal carbides nanosheets (MXenes, Ti3C2Tx) to afford a hybrid 2D/2D CoAl-LDHs/Ti3C2Tx photocatalyst via electrostatic assembly process. The experiments indicated that the CoAl-LDHs/Ti3C2Tx hybrids performed an excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (96.67 %) degradation. Diversified characterization techniques (SEM, TEM, AFM, N-2 adsorption-desorption analysis, XRD, FTIR, UV-vis DRS, photoelectrochemical test) and density functional theory calculations (electronic and optical properties) have indicated that such excellent photocatalytic activity was ascribed to the synergy and the Schottky heterojunction formation between CoAl-LDHs nanosheets and Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, which possessed markedly visible-light absorption, high specific surface area, rapid electrons transfer and depressed electron-hole pairs recombination.

Abstract:Abstract A series of metallic copper (Cu)‐decorated microsized, nanoporous titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) materials with different loadings of Cu were synthesized by in situ hydrolysis of Sn 2+ ‐grafted titanium glycolate microspheres in the presence of Cu 2+ ions. The resulting materials showed good photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction with water. In particular, the material prepared with an optimal loading of Cu (≈0.4 wt %) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for the reduction of CO 2 to hydrocarbon fuel (CH 4 ), with an efficiency that was 21‐fold higher than that of the most commonly studied and utilized commercial photocatalyst, Degussa P25 TiO 2 , under similar reaction conditions.

Abstract:The stems of water convolvulus were employed as biotemplates for the replication of their optimized 3D hierarchical architecture to synthesize porous MgO-modified TiO2. The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O vapor into hydrocarbon fuel was studied with these MgO-TiO2 nanostructures as the photocatalysts with the benefits of improved CO2 adsorption and activation through incorporated MgO. Various factors involving CO2 adsorption capacity, migration of charge carriers to the surface, and the number of activity sites, which depend on the amount of added MgO, determine the photocatalytic conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Designing efficient photocatalysts is vital for the photoreduction of CO2 to produce solar fuels, helping to alleviate issues of fossil fuel depletion and global warming. In this work, a novel ZnCr-LDH/Ti3C2Tx Schottky junction is successfully synthesized using an in situ coprecipitation method. ZnCr-LDH nanoflakes collectively grow on the surface of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. When using Ti3C2Tx MXene as a cocatalyst in the prepared heterojunction, the light absorption intensity, photo-induced electron separation and migration efficiency increase. As a result, the composite ZnCr-LDH/Ti3C2Tx results in significant improvement in the performance of photocatalytic CO2 reduction under simulated solar irradiation. The optimized sample ZCTC25 has the highest photocatalytic CO2 reduction rates of 122.45 μmol g-1 CO and 19.95 μmol g-1 CH4 (after 6 h of irradiation). These values are approximately 2.65 times higher than those of pristine ZnCr-LDH. The product selectivity towards CO is 86%. This work provides a new method for the construction of novel 2D semiconductor photocatalysts and enriches the application of an unusual type of layered double hydroxides in the photoreduction of CO2.

Abstract:Artificial photocatalytic technology is widely used to reduce atmospheric CO2 and convert it into a series of available carbon containing fuels. Among a series of photocatalysts, LDH (layered double hydroxides) and ZIF (zeolitic imidazolate framework) materials have attracted interest of many researchers because of their special physical and chemical properties. In this work, we center on the technical problems of LDH and ZIF in photocatalytic CO2 reduction process, we combined the respective advantages of LDH and ZIF materials to design a new heterostructured ZnAl-LDH@ZIF-8 hybrid photocatalyst/adsorbent, which had a wide range of visible light response, high activity and high selectivity. Through a series of structural characterizations, the results revealed that ZnAl-LDH as a catalyst was excited and produced photoelectric charge under the excitation of sunlight. Meanwhile, the CO2 adsorbed on the catalyst surface was reduced to CO by photogenerated electrons which were migrated from ZnAl-LDH to ZIF-8 surface. The ZnAl-LDH@ZIF-8 hybrid showed a remarkable photocatalytic CO2 conversion of 9.03 μmol·g−1·h−1 and a high selectivity of 97.77%. In addition, the effect on the excitation transfer of photoelectric charge and photocatalytic CO production of interaction between ZnAl-LDH and ZIF-8 were studied, and the relationships among catalyst compositions, surface structures, photoelectric properties, and catalytic performances were clarified. This research supplies a significant method for the construction and development of new type photocatalyst/adsorbent heterostructure, and provides new viewpoints and technical support for in-depth understanding of photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The influence of cobalt on the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 under visible light was examined by using various 3:1 Co-Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) obtained by coprecipitation under low oversaturation conditions. CO 2 photoreduction increased with increasing amount of cobalt in the solids. Calcining the LDHs gave basic mixed oxides (LDOs) with considerably decreased activity, thus confirming that the hydroxyl structure of the materials facilitated the photocatalytic process. Attempts at reconstructing the LDOs revealed that only the material with the smallest amount of cobalt regained its original structure —and exhibited excellent performance in the reaction. All solids were characterized by using various instrumental techniques and used as catalysts in the photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . Also, the fully reconstructed material was reused with no substantial loss of activity.

Abstract:A layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been used as precursor for the synthesis of a multimetallic mixed oxide with photocatalytic activity. Thus, a trimetallic CoTiAl LDH has been synthesized as spherical aggregates of nanosheets. Analysis at short synthesis times indicates that CoTiAl-LDH particles grow perpendicular to initially formed oligomeric Ti-lactate nuclei. Calcination of CoTiAl-LDH at 400 °C affords the corresponding CoTiAl mixed oxide (MO) with low crystallinity having a cobaltite structure, while also maintaining the morphology. This CoTiAl-MO exhibits at 200 °C photocatalytic activity for CO 2 hydrogenation to CO, accompanied with lesser amounts of CH 4 , with remarkable apparent quantum yields at 365 nm of 7.0 and 4.6 for CO and CH 4 , respectively and very low apparent activation energy for 10 kJ/mol. The present results show a promising direction to exploit the potential that the preparation of multimetallic LDH offers for the synthesis of mixed oxides with optimal compositions for an even more enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:CO2 photocatalytic reduction into fuels has provided a sustainable strategy for the mitigation of energy crisis and environmental problems. MgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH), with the advantages of low cost and wide employment in commercial applications, has been regarded as a promising catalyst for CO2 photocatalytic conversion. In order to improve the visible light absorption and charge separation efficiency of MgAl LDH, metalloporphyrin (Co-TCPP) was used for the surface modification of MgAl LDH to prepare the noble metal-free nanocomposite (). The synthesized catalyst exhibits increased photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation compared with pure MgAl LDH. Experimental results show that 20% exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity with the CO evolution rate of 0.40 μmol gcat–1, which is about 4.1 times and 3.3 times higher than those of MgAl LDH and Co-TCPP. The excellent visible light absorption of porphyrin molecules can effectively widen the light absorption edge of the heterogeneous photocatalyst to the low energy region (600–800 nm). Abstract:The conversion efficiency and stability of photocatalysts play important roles for the full photocatalytic CO2 reduction cycle. In this work, a simple hydrothermal and thermal treatment method was used to convert the thin 3D flower-like CoAl-layered double hydroxides (CoAl-LDHs) into ultrathin flower-like 3D porous spinel CoAl2O4 (CoAl). The yields of the optimized CoAl-750 catalyst for CH4 and CO after 7 h of illumination were 58.98 mol/g and 33.11 mol/g, respectively. The CoAl-750 catalyst demonstrates high stability after 35 h of cycling, with the yields of CH4 and CO being 107.19% and 98.38% of the first cycle, respectively. The CoAl spinel catalysts exhibits outstanding stability while increasing the conversion efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The excellent catalytic performance is attributed to the ultra-thin porous 2D nanosheets and spinel structure of CoAl. This work is expected to open new avenues for the application of spinel CoAl2O4 in photocatalysis.

Synergistic effect of atomically dispersed Cu species and Ti-defects for boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction over hierarchical TiO2

Abstract:The photocatalytic water-mediated CO2 reduction reaction, which holds great promise for the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals, is often hindered by inefficient separation of photogenerated charges and a lack of suitable catalytic sites. Herein, we have developed a glycerol coordination assembly approach to precisely control the distribution of atomically dispersed Cu species by occupying Ti-defects and adjusting the ratio between Cu species and Ti-defects in a hierarchical TiO2. The optimal sample demonstrates a ∼4-fold improvement in CO2-to-CO conversion compared to normal TiO2 nanoparticles. The high activity could be attributed to the Ti defects, which enhance the photogenerated charge separation and simultaneously facilitate the adsorption of water molecules, thereby promoting the water oxidation reaction. Moreover, by means of in situ EPR and FTIR spectra, we have demonstrated that Cu species can effectively capture photogenerated electrons and facilitate the adsorption of CO2, so as to catalyze the reduction of CO2. This work provides a strategy for the construction of atomic-level synergistic catalytic sites and the utilization of in situ techniques to reveal the underlying mechanism.
Molecular confined synthesis of magnetic CoOx/Co/C hybrid catalyst for photocatalytic water oxidation and CO2 reduction

Abstract:Photosynthesis [6CO2 + 12H2O → (CH2O)6 + 6O2 + 6H2O] in nature contains a light reaction process for oxygen evolution and a dark reaction process for carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction to carbohydrates, which is of great significance for the survival of living matter. Therefore, for simulating photosynthesis, it is desirable to design and fabricate a bifunctional catalyst for promoting photocatalytic water oxidation and CO2 reduction performances. Herein, a molecular confined synthesis strategy is reasonably proposed and applied, that is the bifunctional CoOx/Co/C-T (T = 700, 800 and 900 °C) photocatalysts prepared by the pyrolysis of molecular Co-EDTA under N2 and air atmosphere in turn. Among the prepared photocatalysts, the CoOx/Co/C-800 shows the best photocatalytic water oxidation activity with an oxygen yield of 51.2%. In addition, for CO2 reduction reaction, the CO evolution rate of 12.6 μmol/h and selectivity of 75% can be achieved over this catalyst. The improved photocatalytic activities are attributed to the rapid electron transfer between the photosensitizer and the catalyst, which is strongly supported by the current density-voltage (j-V), steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra (PL). Overall, this work provides a reference for the preparation and optimization of photocatalysts with the capacity for water oxidation and CO2 reduction reactions.

Abstract:Atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique has been proved to be an efficient method to synthesize or modify catalyst. In this study, Cu was loaded on different TiO2 substrates, pristine TiO2 and black TiO2 (denoted as H-TiO2) to achieve better CO2 photocatalytic reduction performance. Both TiO2@Cu and H-TiO2@Cu exhibited dramatic enhancement for CO and CH4 production. The peculiar phenomenon of TiO2 outperforming H-TiO2 after ALD loading was further studied by a series of characterization methods. Even though H-TiO2 showed superior performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction than TiO2, pristine TiO2 loaded with more Cu0/+ after ALD deposition surpassed the performance of H-TiO2@Cu which possessed less amount of Cu0/+ and more Cu2+. Cu0/+ is proved to be the crucial factor for CO2 reduction and it is capable of overshadowing the influence of Ti3+ and Vo. These results indicate that not only will ALD technique significantly enhance the CO2 reduction performance after Cu deposition, but the substrate employed for loading and the chemical state of loaded material will also influence the subsequent catalytic performance. Abstract:Considering the flexibility in the synthesis that allows the formation of materials with more than two metals, the present study reports the preparation of trimetallic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) having Al as structural tri-positive cation, Ti as photocatalytically active d 0 transition metal and either Ni or Co as dipositive cation. In addition, these LDHs were used as precursors of the corresponding trimetallic mixed oxides (MO). LDH and MO materials in combination with Ru(bpy) 3 Cl 2 as photosensitizer and triethanolamine as sacrificial electron donor were used as catalysts for CO 2 reduction under solar light irradiation. A different product selectivity, either CH 4 for Ni-LDH or CO and H 2 for Co-MO, was observed with production rates for CH 4 or CO that are among the highest reported for these systems. The role of the inorganic materials in the photocatalytic process was supported by transient absorption spectroscopy that revealed the quenching of the Ru(bpy) 3 Cl 2 triplet excited state by Ni-LDH or Co-MO. An important finding was that the trimetallic Co-Ti-Al oxide with cobaltite structure is able to perform CO 2 reduction in spite that the reduction potential of its conduction band is not sufficient to perform the process, evidence by photoluminescence revealing the existence of an upper electronic state responsible for the reduction. These results show the interest in screening multimetallic materials in photocatalysis due to their improved performance and diverse properties.

Toward High-Value Hydrocarbon Generation by Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 in Water Vapor

Abstract:Semiconductor crystals with well-defined morphology, porous nanostructure, and spatially separated active sites are attractive for use in photocatalysis. This paper describes a controlled synthesis of cake-like porous TiO2 photocatalyst with surface-localized doping of copper and cobalt by using a well-defined MIL-125(Ti) metal organic framework as template precursor. The series of the modified TiO2 photocatalysts present the improved activity for photocatalytic CO2 reduction with water vapor. It is found that 1%Cu-doped TiO2 shows an enhanced behavior for breaking C=O bonds. In this case, the outcomes are primarily CO and CH4, yielding up to 135.94 and 127.05 mu mol, respectively, under the irradiation of simulated sunlight for 3 h. The performance can be further improved by incorporating trace cobalt. Besides the improved property for CO and CH4 production, the selectivity also shifts to high-value hydrocarbons (C2+). The yields for C2H6 and C3H8 can be up to 267.60 and 10.07 mu mol, respectively, by using 0.02%Co-1%Cu/TiO2. Our in situ Fourier transform infrared spectra together with theoretical calculations indicate that efficient charge separation on copper and cobalt ions is achieved. This altered charge behavior leads to the generation and enrichment of methyl radicals on the surface of cobalt ions, giving rise to the production of C2+. hydrocarbons. This work demonstrates a vibrant catalyst platform for solar fuel generation by photocatalytic CO2 conversion in water.
