Abstract:We demonstrate an optical beam steering setup based on a liquid crystal-optical phased array (LC-OPA) with high angular resolution and low beam divergence, due to the use of double-grating configuration to enhance the corresponding angular resolution of LC-OPA. The introduction of two nonparallel blazed gratings with a special included angle can achieve multiple diffractions for the incident light, leading to the realization of angular compression. Numerical simulation results show the angular compression ratio can be optimized by selecting the appropriate grating constant and the included angle of double-grating. Experimental results verify that the steered angle of the incident light can be compressed so that the angular resolution of the steered beam can correspondingly be improved more than six times. In addition, when the beam is multiply diffracted within the double-grating configuration, the divergence angle becomes smaller as the beam size is enlarged. Therefore, both the microradian steering resolution and the narrow beam divergence can be simultaneously obtained with our proposed setup. The efficiency of the steering where the beam diffracted four times within the double-grating configuration is 80%.

Abstract:Digital Micromirror Devices, extensively employed in projection displays offer rapid, polarization-independent beam steering. However, they are constrained by microelectromechanical system limitations, resulting in reduced resolution, limited beam steering angle and poor stability, which hinder further performance optimization. Liquid Crystal on Silicon technology, employing liquid crystal (LC) and silicon chip technology, with properties of high resolution, high contrast and good stability. Nevertheless, its polarization-dependent issues lead to complex system and low efficiency in device applications. This paper introduces a hybrid integration of metallic metasurface with nematic LC, facilitating a polarization-independent beam steering device capable of large-angle deflections. Employing principles of geometrical phase and plasmonic resonances, the metallic metasurface, coupled with an electronically controlled LC, allows for dynamic adjustment, achieving a maximum deflection of ± 27.1°. Additionally, the integration of an LC-infused dielectric grating for dynamic phase modulation and the metasurface for polarization conversion ensures uniform modulation effects across all polarizations within the device. We verify the device's large-angle beam deflection capability and polarization insensitivity effect in simulations and propose an optimization scheme to cope with the low efficiency of individual diffraction stages.

Abstract:Continuous, wide field-of-view, high-efficiency, and fast-response beam steering devices are desirable in a plethora of applications. Liquid crystals (LCs)—soft, bi-refringent, and self-assembled materials which respond to various external stimuli—are especially promising for fulfilling these demands. In this paper, we review recent advances in LC beam steering devices. We first describe the general operation principles of LC beam steering techniques. Next, we delve into different kinds of beam steering devices, compare their pros and cons, and propose a new LC-cladding waveguide beam steerer using resistive electrodes and present our simulation results. Finally, two future development challenges are addressed: Fast response time for mid-wave infrared (MWIR) beam steering, and device hybridization for large-angle, high-efficiency, and continuous beam steering. To achieve fast response times for MWIR beam steering using a transmission-type optical phased array, we develop a low-loss polymer-network liquid crystal and characterize its electro-optical properties.

Abstract:Beam‐steering technology is now in widespread use in a variety of optical systems, spanning from fiber‐optic interconnector to Lidar. Most current techniques are based on optical grating diffractions; they are thus subject to not only finite tuning range, direction, and efficiency but also complex inorganic fabrication and circuit design. A high‐degree‐of‐freedom beam‐steering element makes such operations more efficient and versatile. Azobenzene cholesteric liquid crystal polymer (azo‐ChLCP) can be regarded as a soft self‐assembled Bragg mirror capable of being bent photomechanically. With proper control of pump polarization and exposure time, the output beam can be directly steered to an arbitrary direction. The deflection efficiency was achieved to be at least 90% with an angular tuning range of ≈54°, which is markedly superior to conventional grating‐based devices. Additionally, the angle of deflection is independent of wavelength, preventing the deflected beam from spreading out with colors. This work demonstrates and characterizes the azo‐ChLCP beam deflector, which features optical tunability, high efficiency, wide tuning range, and polarization‐selective deflection direction, making a significant breakthrough in beam‐steering technology.

Abstract:Beam steering is widely used in aerospace,laser communication,vehicle-mounted ridar,optical information processing,biomedicine and military confrontation. Non-mechanical beam steering has received intensive attention. Liquid-crystal-polymer-based polarization grating can realize high-efficient,large-angle beam steering with merits of simple and low-cost fabrication, and thus has been gradually adopted in non-mechanical beam steering. In this paper,two circularly polarized holographic optical paths are used to fabricate the liquid-crystal-polymer-based polarization grating of different pitches,respectively. The measured diffraction efficiency reaches over 99. 3%. Multiple liquid-crystal-polymer-based gratings are cascaded and then stacked with liquid crystal polymer/ferroelectric liquid crystal/liquid crystal polymer waveplates to achieve fast response(70 mu s)and large angle 4-channel beam deflections.

Direct investigation and accurate control of phase profile in liquid-crystal optical-phased array for beam steering

Abstract:An experimental setup and simple method were proposed to investigate and control the actual phase profile in a high-spatial-resolution liquid-crystal optical-phased array (LCOPA). A crossed polarizer and high-resolution microscope objective were employed to transform the light distribution out of the liquid-crystal layer into a polarization-interference pattern in which the phase-profile information was wrapped. The polarization-interference pattern was then directly translated into the actual phase profile. Based on this setup, a method was developed to accurately control the actual phase profile, and the steering efficiency at the steering angle of 16 mrad was increased from 80% to 90%. The proposed method also helps in increasing the steering efficiency when disclination lines appear.

Abstract:Optical beam steerers have been widely employed for information acquisitions. Numerous beam steering schemes have been developed, and each of them can satisfy practical requirements for certain scenarios. However, there is still a lack of a comprehensive approach that is able to balance all of the critical technical parameters for wide range of applications. Here, a semisolid micromechanical beam steering system based on micrometa-lens arrays (MMLAs) is demonstrated. It is operated by manipulating the probe beam over two sets of decentered MMLAs potentially driven by high-speed piezo-electric motors. Small f-numbers, well-corrected aberration, and easy lateral reproduction of micrometa-lenses optimize the overall technical parameters. As a proof-of-concept, we implement such a device exhibiting diffraction-limited resolution within a large field of view of 30° × 30°. A three-dimensional depth sensing is also performed to demonstrate its potential in light detection and ranging applications.
Wide-Angle Beam Steering Based on an Active Conformal Metasurface Lens

Abstract:This work experimentally demonstrates a wide-angle beam steering based on an active conformal metasurface lens. Integrated with microwave varactors, the transmission phase of this cylindrical metasurface lens can be tuned in a range up to 195° by direct-current (DC) bias voltages. By compensating the phase difference between different incidences, the proposed cylindrical lens can collimate the incident spherical wave front into a plane wave front with predefined deflection angle. By increasing the number of feeding sources, the beam steering range of conformal lens can be expanded to ±60°. Having advantages of low cost and simple structure, the proposed conformal lens can be extended to millimeter-wave band and enable a wide range of applications.
Two-dimensional Beam Steering Based on Dispersive Optical Phased Array

Abstract:We demonstrate 32-channel dispersive optical phased arrays on a Si3N4-on-SOI integration platform. The phase difference is introduced by the arrayed waveguide. Beam steering in phased-array direction with an aliasing-free range of 22.4 degrees and free spectrum ranges of similar to 60 nm and similar to 6 nm is achieved. Meanwhile, the main lobe is deflected simultaneously by 19.67 degrees in the other direction by tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1630 nm. Measurement results show that the dispersive optical phased array provides a compact, low-power and massively parallel solution for LiDAR applications.

Abstract:As two independent optical sub-fields, diffraction optics and plasmonics both have been used for wavefront shaping and beam steering. However, the two separate concepts have always been developing as two parallel directions, which have not met for studying their structural hybridization to discover new potentials. For instance of the flat metasurfaces, even though the geometric parameters including shape, size, and periodicity have been studied, it remains mostly unexplored for the 3D spatial height variation. Here, a new type of all-metallic 3D meta-prism is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by hybridizing the localized surface plasmonic resonances (LSPR) and the blazed grating diffraction, which enables strong polarization-dependent behaviors to steer broadband visible light to drastically inverse directions. The nanofabrication of 3D meta-prism is achieved by nanostencil lithography with electron-beam evaporation. Such meta-prism could also enable to split different visible light (green, blue, and red) with high-efficiency contrast (≈10). By the mirror-symmetry arrangement, a multifunctional surface is demonstrated with polarization-/wavelength-multiplexing wavefront-shaping functions (concave, convex, or flat mirror). This unique 3D meta-prism enjoys great simplicity and versatility in broadband beam steering through the incorporation of plasmonic and diffractive effects and can be utilized in various applications including dichroic-prism splitters, multifunctional meta-mirrors, etc.

Abstract:Non-mechanical beam steerers with lightweight, compact, high-efficiency, high-precision, and/or large-angle are pivotal for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) of autonomous vehicles, eye-tracking for near-eye displays, microscopy, optical tweezers, and high-precision three-dimensional (3D) printing. However, even the most matured optical phased array can only provide quasi-continuous, efficient beam steering within a small angle range. A telescope module with an angle magnification function can be coupled to enlarge the steering range or precision. But obtaining a compact, low-cost, lightweight, high-quality telescope module with conventional optics remains challenging. Patterned liquid crystal-based planar optical elements offer great design freedom for manipulating the phase profile of light in 2D space. Owing to the advantages of high efficiency, thinness, low cost, easy processing, flexibility, and response to environmental stimuli, a plethora of high-quality optical devices have been demonstrated. Here, a miniature planar telescope mediated by liquid crystal polymers is proposed to offer angle magnification independent of incident spatial location. It consists of two cascaded liquid crystal planar optical elements, each performing a predefined mathematical transformation. By this concept, planar optical elements are fabricated using a new exposure method and assembled into planar telescopes with different magnification factors. Within the incident field range, over 84.6% optical efficiency is achieved with small wavefront distortion. Such a miniature planar telescope shows the potential of cascaded liquid crystal planar optical elements for realizing functionalities that cannot be fulfilled by single optical elements, and enables lightweight, low loss, passive optical transmitters for widespread applications.

Abstract:A two-dimensional beam steering device is an essential optical element for many applications, such as free-space optical communications, light detection and ranging, and microscopy. The purpose of the paper is to develop a two-dimensional beam steering device with a simple structure and a large beam steering angle. The principle of beam steering is based on the decentred lens. The decentred lens is placed on the center of the dielectric elastomer and the movement of the decentred lens is actuated by the dielectric elastomer The dielectric elastomer is divided into four quadrants and the top and bottom surfaces of the four quadrants of dielectric elastomer are coated by compliant electrodes. Through applying different voltages on the four quadrants, the decentred lens can move and the beam is steered in a two-dimensional direction. We develop a prototype and carried out imaging experiments to verify the proposed beam steering method. The experimental results show that the maximum translation distance of the decentred lens is 1.496 mm at an actuation voltage of 5 kV. The function of two-dimensional beam steering is realized and the maximum beam steering angle of the device is 11.98°. Such a two-dimensional beam steering device promises a potential solution in various beam steering systems.

A Hybrid Solid-State Beam Scanner for LiDAR Applications

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid solid-state beam scanner based on 32-channel silicon nitride optical switch with the assistance of transmission blazed grating. The optical switch exhibits rather low power consumption of 7.2 mW/π. Besides, end-fire antennas offer high optical efficiency with less reflection. Non-mechanical two-dimensional beam steering with range of 14.32° × 9.94° and beam divergence of <0.1° is achieved by wavelength tuning and onchip optical path switching. The proposed system eliminates complex control and time-consuming array phase calibration, providing a flexible, scalable and effective solution for all solid-state coaxial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology.

Abstract:Active metasurfaces are emerging as the core of next-generation optical devices with their tunable optical responses and flat-compact topography. Especially for the terahertz band, active metasurfaces have been developed as fascinating devices for optical chopping and compressive sensing imaging. However, performance regulation by changing the dielectric parameters of the integrated functional materials exhibits severe limitations and parasitic losses. Here, we introduce a C-shape-split-ring-based phase discontinuity metasurface with liquid crystal elastomer as the substrate for infrared modulation of terahertz wavefront. Line-focused infrared light is applied to manipulate the deflection of the liquid crystal elastomer substrate, enabling controllable and broadband wavefront steering with a maximum output angle change of 22° at 0.68 THz. Heating as another control method is also investigated and compared with infrared control. We further demonstrate the performance of liquid crystal elastomer metasurface as a beam steerer, frequency modulator, and tunable beam splitter, which are highly desired in terahertz wireless communication and imaging systems. The proposed scheme demonstrates the promising prospects of mechanically deformable metasurfaces, thereby paving the path for the development of reconfigurable metasurfaces.

Abstract:<p>Liquid immersion on metasurface was earlier demonstrated to realize spectral control. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve tunable phase modulation and versatile beam-steering performance, which are critical for practical optoelectronic devices. Here, a new liquid-immersive mechanism with metasurfaces for active beam-steering is proposed and experimentally realized. Based on the dielectric-on-metal nanostructure with selective hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties, the switchable beam-steering is initiated and successfully presented in the broadband visible regime with a large reflection angle of ≈±30°. Specifically, the beam diffraction direction is tuned between two opposite-directional channels by water immersion or drying in a repeatable and controllable manner. The proposed straightforward tuning strategy enjoys great convenience in structural patterning and large-area implementation, instead of requiring any complicated contact patterning or external modulation. This study provides an alternative optical platform for switchable beam-steering functionality, which is promising for potential applications in tunable display, directional emission, sensing technologies, etc.</p>

Abstract:Shaping and steering of light beams is essential in many modern applications, ranging from optical tweezers, camera lenses, vision correction to 3D displays. However, current realisations require increasingly greater tunability and aim for lesser specificity for use in diverse applications. Here, we demonstrate tunable light beam control based on multi-layer liquid-crystal cells and external electric field, capable of extended beam shifting, steering, and expanding, using a combination of theory and full numerical modelling, both for liquid crystal orientations and the transmitted light. Specifically, by exploiting three different function-specific and tunable birefringent nematic layers, we show an effective liquid-crystal beam control device, capable of precise control of outgoing light propagation, with possible application in projectors or automotive headlamps.
