Abstract:With the growth of modern turbofan engines, their integration under the wing becomes challenging and induces aerodynamic and acoustic interactions between the jet exhaust and the airframe. Jet noise reduction techniques have been widely studied over the past decades but their efficiency has still to be demonstrated once installed. The present lab-scale jet experiments at Mach 0.6 compare the noise radiated by beveled and rectangular installed nozzles to circular ones on a quarter-sphere radiation map using a microphone antenna. For all radiation angles, modified nozzles show an amplitude decrease of the jet-plate interaction tones of the noise spectra attributed to a strong coupling between the jet shear layers and the sound scattering at the plate trailing edge. Beveled nozzles achieve a noise reduction for all radiation angles with a maximum decrease up to 2 dB at receiver locations perpendicular to the plate. While rectangular nozzles show a similar behavior, a sound increase is observed for listeners parallel to the plate when the height-to-width ratio is small.

Study of the effect of flap angle on the dual-stream hot jet-flap noise

Abstract:The experimental investigation of jet-flap-interaction (JFI) noise on dual-stream hot jets due to flap angles is conducted in the full anechoic chamber of Fluid and Acoustic Engineering Laboratory in Beihang University. A detailed analysis of the experimental data of jet-flap noise and a semi-empirical prediction method is given. The experimental measurements demonstrate that the flap angle has a great effect on the generation of the tonal noise and the broadband noise component is insensitive to the flap angle. The noise reflection by the flap surfaces at high frequency isn’t observed due to the strong refraction effect in dual-stream hot jet. The non-harmonic jet impingement tonal noises are analysed and found the tonal frequency are in agreement with feedback prediction formula. The jetflap noise is modelled by a two-source model. The first source is jet alone noise and predicted by improved Stone model, comparison of predicted spectra with experimental data shows the high accuracy of the improved Stone model. The second source is caused by the flap trailing edge scattering mechanism. A semi-empirical model for the flap trailing edge scattering mechanism is given. The comparison between the predicted jet-flap noise and the experimental measurements demonstrate that the present prediction model agree well with experimental results at different observer angles and flap angles.

Abstract:Motivated by the problem of jet-flap interaction noise, we study the tonal dynamics that occur when a sharp edge is placed in the hydrodynamic nearfield of an isothermal turbulent jet. We perform hydrodynamic and acoustic pressure measurements in order to characterise the tones as a function of Mach number and streamwise edge position. The distribution of spectral peaks observed, as a function of Mach number, cannot be explained using the usual edge-tone scenario, in which resonance is underpinned by coupling between downstream-travelling Kelvin-Helmholtz wavepackets and upstream-travelling sound waves. We show, rather, that the strongest tones are due to coupling between the former and upstream-travelling jet modes recently studied by Towne et al. (2017) and Schmidt et al. (2017). We also study the band-limited nature of the resonance, showing a high-frequency cut-off to be due to the frequency dependence of the upstream-travelling waves. At high Mach number these become evanescent above a certain frequency, whereas at low Mach number they become progressively trapped with increasing frequency, a consequence of which is their not being reflected in the nozzle plane. Additionally, a weaker, low-frequency, forced-resonance regime is identified that involves the same upstream travelling jet modes but that couple, in this instance, with downstream-travelling sound waves. It is suggested that the existence of two resonance regimes may be due to the non-modal nature of wavepacket dynamics at low-frequency.

Experimental validation of the hybrid scattering model of installed jet noise

Abstract:Jet installation causes jet noise to be amplified significantly at low frequencies and its physical mechanism must be understood to develop effective aircraft noise reduction strategies. A hybrid semi-empirical prediction model has recently been developed based on the instability-wave-scattering mechanism. However, its validity and accuracy remain to be tested. To do so, in this paper we carry out a systematic installed jet-noise experiment in the laboratory using a flat plate instead of an aircraft wing. We show that reducing $H$ (the separation distance between the flat plate and jet centreline) causes stronger low-frequency noise enhancement while resulting in little change to the noise shielding and enhancement at high frequencies. Decreasing $L$ (the axial distance between the jet exit plane and the trailing edge of the plate) results in reduced noise amplification at low frequencies and also weakens both the shielding and enhancement at high frequencies. Increasing the jet Mach number abates the installation effects. It is shown that the hybrid model developed in the earlier work agrees with experimental measurements and can capture the effects of varying $H$, $L$ and jet Mach number extremely well. It is concluded that the model captures the correct physics and can serve as an accurate and robust prediction tool. This new physical understanding provides insights into innovative strategies for suppressing installed jet noise.

Abstract:The link between jet-installation noise and the near-field flow features of the corresponding isolated jet is studied by means of lattice-Boltzmann numerical simulations. The computational set-up consists of a flat plate placed in proximity to a jet, replicating the interaction benchmark study carried out at NASA Glenn. Installation effects cause low-frequency noise increase with respect to the isolated case, mainly occurring in the direction normal to the plate and upstream of the jet’s exit plane. It is shown that the Helmholtz number, based on the wavelength of eddies in the mixing layer and their distance to the plate trailing edge, predicts the frequency range where installation noise occurs. Based on the isolated jet near field, scaling laws are also found for the far-field noise produced by different plate geometries. The linear hydrodynamic field of the isolated jet shows an exponential decay of pressure fluctuations in the radial direction; it is shown that the far-field spectrum follows the same trend when moving the plate in this direction. In the axial direction, spectral proper orthogonal decomposition is applied to filter out jet acoustic waves. The resultant hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations display a wavepacket behaviour, which can be fitted with a Gaussian envelope. It is found that installation noise for different plate lengths is proportional to the amplitude of the Gaussian curve at the position of the plate trailing edge. These analyses show that trends of jet-installation noise can be predicted by analysing the near field of the isolated case, reducing the need for extensive parametric investigations.

Abstract:In this work, an experimental and numerical analysis of the feasibility of using acoustic liners to reduce the acoustic far-field radiation of a subsonic jet near a flat plate is presented. The Boundary Element Method (BEM) with a wavepacket model of the jet noise and considering an acoustic impedance boundary condition was used to calculate the far-field noise for different conditions. A parametric optimization was performed in order to find an optimum impedance in terms of the Overall Sound Pressure Level reduction. Semi-empirical models of acoustic liners were then used to design a liner with an impedance as close as possible to the optimum impedance. The liners were built using additive manufacturing and tested in terms of their acoustic impedance and the resulting noise reduction when applied to a region of the flat plate. The BEM simulations, considering the impedance, showed good agreement with experimental data. Overall, by means of the BEM model, optimization and liner semi-empirical models, it was possible to design an acoustic liner which significantly reduced the installation noise at the far-field, with the overall noise reduction between 2 dB to 4 dB depending on observation angle.

Abstract:Subsonic jet nozzles, commonly used in passenger aircrafts, generate significant noise that travels both downstream and upstream due to large-scale or fine-scale turbulence in the jet plume. To reduce jet noise, a novel wall treatment method, termed the wavy inner wall (WIW), is proposed. With this method, the smooth inner wall near the exit of the nozzle is replaced by treated walls that carry small wavy patterns. Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of the WIW treatment. Large eddy simulations (LES) were used to predict the unsteady flow field and the far-field noise, followed by the analogy method proposed by Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings. To better understand the mechanism behind the noise reduction achieved by the WIW treatment, the shear-layer instability, radial and azimuthal auto-correlation functions, turbulent kinetic energy, and acoustic source term from the Tam-Auriault (TA) jet-noise model were analyzed. Results indicated that the WIW treatment advances the onset of jet flow instability in the shear-layer, leading to the early breakdown of jet shear-layer and production of different scales of downstream turbulent structures. As a result, the distribution and production of turbulent kinetic energy are affected, and the generation and emission of jet noise are controlled. The WIW treatment enables the control of fine scale turbulence, resulting in the reduction of mid- to high-frequency noise in the far field, while ensuring a low thrust loss. This feature makes the WIW method a promising approach for jet noise control.
An aeroacoustic investigation into the effect of self-oscillating trailing edge flaplets

Abstract:The aeroacoustics of a NACA 0012 aerofoil with an array of self-oscillating flexible flaplets attached on the trailing edge has been investigated at low to moderate chord based Reynolds number (50,000 -- 350,000) and at geometric angles of attack from $\alpha_g = 0^\circ$ -- $20^\circ$. When the aerofoil is untripped, tonal peaks are observed on the baseline aerofoil. When the passive flaplets are attached to the pressure side of the aerofoil, the tonal peak is removed. If the flaplets are then placed on the suction side, the tonal peak is reduced, but not removed. It is therefore hypothesised that the flaplets on the pressure side modifies the laminar separation bubble situated on the pressure side of the aerofoil, a key mechanism for tonal noise. Throughout all cases, both tripped and untripped, a low frequency (0.1 kHz -- 0.6 kHz) noise reduction and a slight increase at higher frequencies (>2 kHz) is seen. This gives an average overall sound pressure level (OSPL) reduction of 1.5 -- 2 dB for the flaplets affixed to the pressure side. The cases where the tonal noise component is removed an OSPL reduction of up to 20 dB can be seen.

Abstract:Screech tones in supersonic jets are underpinned by resonance between downstream-travelling Kelvin–Helmholtz waves and upstream-travelling acoustic waves. Specifically, recent works suggest that the relevant acoustic waves are guided within the jet and are described by a discrete mode of the linearised Euler equations. However, the reflection mechanism that converts downstream-travelling waves into upstream-travelling waves, and vice versa, has not been thoroughly addressed, leading to missing physics within most resonance models. In this work, we investigate the reflection and transmission of waves generated by the interaction between a Kelvin–Helmholtz wave and a normal shock in an under-expanded jet using a mode-matching approach. Both vortex-sheet and finite-thickness shear-layer models are explored, quantifying the impact of the shear layer in the reflection process. This approach could enable more quantitative predictions of resonance phenomena in jets and other fluid systems.

Abstract:A recently developed computational framework for jet noise predictions is presented. The framework consists of two main components, focusing on source prediction and noise propagation. To compute the noise sources, the turbulent jet is simulated using the compressible flow solver implemented in the open-source spectral/hp element framework Nektar++, which solves the unfiltered Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured grids using the high-order discontinuous Galerkin method. This allows high-order accuracy to be achieved on unstructured grids, which in turn is important in order to accurately simulate industrially relevant geometries. For noise propagation, the Ffowcs Williams - Hawkings method is used to propagate the noise between the jet and the far-field. The paper provides a detailed description of the computational framework, including how the different components fit together and how to use them. To demonstrate the framework, two configurations of a single stream subsonic jet are considered. In the first configuration, the jet is treated in isolation, whereas in the second configuration, it is installed under a wing. The aerodynamic results for these two jets show strong agreement with experimental data, while some discrepancies are observed in the acoustic results, which are discussed. In addition to this, we demonstrate close to linear scaling beyond 100,000 processors on the ARCHER2 supercomputer.

Effect of different geometries of self-oscillating trailing-edge flaplets on aerofoil self-noise

Abstract:This paper presents an acoustic study of a standard NACA 0012 aerofoil with additional self-oscillating passive flaplets attached to the trailing edge. The tests with varying geometries of the flaplets were conducted in the anechoic wind tunnel at Brandenburg University of Technology, at chord based Reynolds numbers, $Re_c = 100,000 - 900,000$ at three geometric angles of attack $\alpha_g = 0^\circ, 10^\circ$ and $15^\circ$. It was observed that all flaplet configurations reduce tonal noise and that the key geometric parameter to reduce this noise component is the width of the flaplets. The narrowest configuration tested almost completely removed the tonal noise, leading to an average overall sound pressure level reduction of up to 9 dB across the entire $Re_c$ range at $\alpha_g = 10^\circ$. It was also observed that, in the low frequency regime, a further noise reduction can be achieved by tuning the natural frequency of the oscillating flaplets. The thereby affected frequency range in the noise spectrum moves to higher frequencies when the natural frequency of the flaplets is increased and vice versa. Hence we show a novel way to target specific frequencies in passive aerofoil self-noise cancellation.

Acoustic emission due to the interaction between shock and instability waves in 2D supersonic jet flows

Abstract:An analytical model is developed to study the sound produced by the interaction between shock and instability waves in two-dimensional supersonic jet flows. The jet is considered to be of vortex-sheet type and 2D Euler equations are linearised to determine the governing equations for shock, instability waves, and their interaction. Pack's model is used to describe shock waves, while instability waves are calculated using spatial stability analysis. The interaction between shock and instability waves can be solved analytically by performing Fourier transform and subsequently using the method of steepest descent. Sound produced by the interaction between the instability wave and a single shock cell is studied first, after which that due to a number of cells follows. We find that the model developed in this study can correctly predict the frequencies of the fundamental screech tone and its first and second harmonics. We show that the predicted sound directivity, even from a single shock cell, is in good agreement with experimental data. In particular, this model shows the strongest noise emission close to the upstream direction but the emitted noise starts to rapidly decay as the observer angle approaches 180 degrees, which is in accordance with experimental results; this suggests that the effective noise from a single shock cell is far from of the monopole type as assumed in the classical Powell's model. We find that the noise directivity is very sensitive to the local growth rate of the instability waves and the noise is generated primarily through the Mach wave mechanism.

An empirical model of noise sources in subsonic jets

Abstract:Modelling the noise emitted by turbulent jets is made difficult by their acoustic inefficiency: only a tiny fraction of the near-field turbulent kinetic energy is propagated to the far field as acoustic waves. As a result, jet-noise models must accurately capture this small, acoustically efficient component hidden among comparatively inefficient fluctuations. In this paper, we identify this acoustically efficient near-field source from large-eddy-simulation data and use it to inform a predictive model. Our approach uses the resolvent framework, in which the source takes the form of nonlinear fluctuation terms that act as a forcing on the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. First, we identify the forcing that, when acted on by the resolvent operator, produces the leading spectral proper orthogonal decomposition modes in the acoustic field for a Mach 0.4 jet. Second, the radiating components of this forcing are isolated by retaining only portions with a supersonic phase speed. This component makes up less than 0.05% of the total forcing energy but generates most of the acoustic response, especially at peak (downstream) radiation angles. Finally, we propose an empirical model for the identified acoustically efficient forcing components. The model is tested at other Mach numbers and flight-stream conditions and predicts noise within 2 dB accuracy for a range of frequencies, downstream angles, and flight conditions.

Abstract:Jets are one of the most fascinating topics in fluid mechanics. For aeronautics, turbulent jet-noise modelling is particularly challenging, not only because of the poor understanding of high Reynolds number turbulence, but also because of the extremely low acoustic efficiency of high-speed jets. Turbulent jet-noise models starting from the classical Lighthill acoustic analogy to state-of-the art models were considered. No attempt was made to present any complete overview of jet-noise theories. Instead, the aim was to emphasize the importance of sound generation and mean-flow propagation effects, as well as their interference, for the understanding and prediction of jet noise.

Abstract:Supersonic jet noise reduction is important for high speed military aircraft. Lower acoustic levels would reduce structural fatigue leading to longer lifetime of the jet aircraft. It is not solely structural aspects which are of importance, health issues of the pilot and the airfield per- sonnel are also very important, as high acoustic levels may result in severe hearing damage. It remains a major challenge to reduce the overall noise levels of the aircraft, where the supersonic exhaust is the main noise source for near ground operation. Fluidic injection into the supersonic jet at the nozzle exhaust has been shown as a promising method for noise reduction. It has been shown to speed up the mix- ing process of the main jet, hence reducing the kinetic energy level of the jet and the power of the total acoustic radiation. Furthermore, the interaction mechanism between the fluidic injection and the shock structure in the jet exhaust plays a crucial role in the total noise radia- tion. In this study, LES is used to investigate the change in flow struc- tures of a supersonic (M=1.56) jet from a converging-diverging nozzle. Six fluidic actuators, evenly distributed around the nozzle exit, inject air in a radial direction towards the main flow axis with a total mass flow ratio of 3%. Steady injection is compared with flapping injection. With flapping injection turned on, the injection angle of each injector is varied sinusoidally in the nozzle exit plane and the variation is the same for all injectors. Abstract:Scientific research studies on jet noise generation have been ongoing since the early 1950s, when turbojets were first used in commercial aircraft. Several numerical methods have been developed with the aim of reducing the environmental issues related to the impact of jet noise on community annoyance. Among them, the development of fast and comprehensive tools for jet noise prediction captured the attention of researchers and engineers, being very useful in the preliminary design phase of aircraft engines. This work deals with an extensive survey of James R. Stone's models, initially formulated for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) by Modern Technologies Corporation (MTC), and their implementation in a contemporary numerical framework. The models and their implementation are validated by simulating different engine settings and nozzle configurations taken from the literature with the main scope of highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the different semi-empirical formulations and setting guidelines for their effective use during the design phases of the next generation of supersonic aircraft.

Acoustic source characterization of simulated subsonic jet noise using spherical harmonics

Abstract:As subsonic jets remain one of the major contributions to aircraft noise emissions, near-field flow simulations should be included in aircraft design at an early stage using quantitatively predicted sound pressure levels and the time-domain signal properties of the noise data. In this regard, the interface from the near-field data to the far-field radiation-under consideration of acoustic reflections from objects such as fuselage and wings-remains as bottleneck. This study presents the computation of a spherical equivalent source model of jet noise with minimal complexity by means of spherical harmonic (SH) coefficients. Using spherical Hankel extrapolation of sound pressure data from virtual, concentrical microphone arrays, the results of the determination for the radius, in which all acoustic sources of a flow field are confined, indicate the source radius around the end of the potential core to be equivalent to five times the nozzle diameter. The result of the SH transform shows the dominant energy contribution to be related to nine elementary sources. The resulting equivalent source model of jet noise provides a convenient format for further use in large-scale computational fluid dynamics simulations.
A physical model for indirect noise in non-isentropic nozzles: transfer functions and stability

Abstract:We propose a mathematical model from physical principles to predict the sound generated in nozzles with dissipation. The focus is on the sound generated from the acceleration of temperature inhomogeneities (also known as entropy waves), which is referred to as indirect noise. First, we model the dissipation caused by flow recirculation and wall friction with a friction factor, which enables us to derive quasi-one-dimensional equations from conservation laws. The model is valid for both compact nozzles and nozzles with a spatial extent. Second, the predictions from the proposed model are compared against the experimental data available in the literature. Third, we compute the nozzle transfer functions for a range of Helmholtz numbers and friction factors. It is found that the friction and the Helmholtz number have a significant effect on the gain/phase of the reflected and transmitted waves. The analysis is performed from subsonic to supersonic regimes (with and without shock waves). The acoustic transfer functions vary significantly because of non-isentropic effects and the Helmholtz number, in particular, in the subsonic-choked regime. Finally, we calculate the effect that the friction of a nozzle guide vane has on thermoacoustic stability. It is found that the friction and the Helmholtz number can change thermoacoustic stability from a linearly stable regime to a linearly unstable regime. The study opens up new possibilities for the accurate prediction of indirect noise in realistic nozzles with implications on both noise emissions and thermoacoustic stability.

ON HIGH-SPEED JET NOISE AND ITS MITIGATION

Abstract:This paper presents the contributions of Professor Ffowcs Williams to the understanding high speed jet noise and its prediction. Additionally, his insights into the flow physics of high speed jets has led to practical ideas that guided many developments in the noise mitigation technologies. These two aspects are discussed with successful examples. 1. Study Description Two major problems associated with jet noise are: the reliable prediction of the acoustic far-field radiation from the jet in terms of the engine operating parameters and the design of suitable methods to reduce the noise by either reducing the total acoustic output of the jet or redistributing the acoustic energy. When considering high-speed jets, such as those generated by the engines of supersonic military aircraft, the existing knowledge provides little guidance in solving either of these problems. Many of the empirical formulae that predict the far-field noise with sufficient accuracy are generally confined to particular jet engines operating at specific conditions. It is therefore of interest to gather a comprehensive set of experimental data that will provide guidance in developing predictive methods that cover a wide range of jet operating conditions, especially at high speeds. In this paper we not only provide an expanded set of far-field noise data for heated supersonic jets, but also critically examine all the existing data to organize it in a suitable form to assist in developing reliable empirical formulae for far-field noise prediction. These empirical formulae are mostly based on the work Professor Ffowcs williams1 and its impact on prediction method will be presented. As second objective of the experimental investigations described here is aimed at developing noise mitigation schemes that have minimal impact on the engine thrust performance. Since the early days of jet noise research a vast knowledge of jet noise control techniques has been acquired. Some of the methods have contributed to reductions in jet noise. One such example is the subdivision of normal circular jet into numerous elements that would promote rapid mixing. Such an approach results in the reduction of sound pressure levels (SPL) for the high-energy, low frequency noise, accompanied with increasing SPL at higher frequencies. Abstract:To improve the current understanding of flap noise generation mechanisms in high-lift devices used by small- to large-size commercial aircraft, a detailed study of both two- and three-element configurations of the canonical high-lift 30P30N airfoil has been conducted. Results from unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations are compared with aerodynamic and acoustic measurements in the hybrid anechoic wind tunnel at the University of Toronto to gain better physical insights into the flow phenomena associated with the noise sources in multi-element configurations. It is shown that the slat element has little impact on the flow in and around the flap and flap gap when the main wing is at the same orientation relative to the incoming flow. Tonal peaks are found both in the flap cove and on the flap, matching the tonal noise produced by the slat when in the three-element configuration. These peaks are present at the flap due to pressure waves that emanate from the slat and propagate downstream. Analysis of the frequency wavenumber spectra of the unsteady pressure along the main element pressure surface shows the existence of forward- and backward-traveling acoustic waves, providing evidence of a feedback loop between the two coves, which amplifies the narrowband tonal peaks in both coves. These tones disappear from the flap when the slat is removed in a two-element configuration, with the flap-cove overall broadband pressure fluctuation levels remaining unchanged.
