Abstract:Abstract The reconstruction of the trajectories of charged particles, or track reconstruction, is a key computational challenge for particle and nuclear physics experiments. While the tuning of track reconstruction algorithms can depend strongly on details of the detector geometry, the algorithms currently in use by experiments share many common features. At the same time, the intense environment of the High-Luminosity LHC accelerator and other future experiments is expected to put even greater computational stress on track reconstruction software, motivating the development of more performant algorithms. We present here A Common Tracking Software (ACTS) toolkit, which draws on the experience with track reconstruction algorithms in the ATLAS experiment and presents them in an experiment-independent and framework-independent toolkit. It provides a set of high-level track reconstruction tools which are agnostic to the details of the detection technologies and magnetic field configuration and tested for strict thread-safety to support multi-threaded event processing. We discuss the conceptual design and technical implementation of ACTS, selected applications and performance of ACTS, and the lessons learned.
Reverse Optimization Reconstruction Method in Non-Null Aspheric Interferometry

Abstract:Aspheric non-null test achieves more flexible measurements than the null test. However, the precision calibration for retrace error has always been difficult. A reverse optimization reconstruction (ROR) method is proposed for the retrace error calibration as well as the aspheric figure error extraction based on system modeling. An optimization function is set up with system model, in which the wavefront data from experiment is inserted as the optimization objective while the figure error under test in the model as the optimization variable. The optimization is executed by the reverse ray tracing in the system model until the test wavefront in the model is consistent with the one in experiment. At this point, the surface figure error in the model is considered to be consistent with the one in experiment. With the Zernike fitting, the aspheric surface figure error is then reconstructed in the form of Zernike polynomials. Numerical simulations verifying the high accuracy of the ROR method are presented with error considerations. A set of experiments are carried out to demonstrate the validity and repeatability of ROR method. Compared with the results of Zygo interferometer (null test), the measurement error by the ROR method achieves better than 1/10 lambda.

Abstract:The OPERA experiment, designed to conclusively prove the existence of $\rm \nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau$ oscillations in the atmospheric sector, makes use of a massive lead-nuclear emulsion target to observe the appearance of $\rm \nu_\tau$'s in the CNGS $\rm \nu_\mu$ beam. The location and analysis of the neutrino interactions in quasi real-time required the development of fast computer-controlled microscopes able to reconstruct particle tracks with sub-micron precision and high efficiency at a speed of 20 cm^2 / h. This paper describes the performance in particle track reconstruction of the European Scanning System, a novel automatic microscope for the measurement of emulsion films developed for OPERA.

Reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in the PANDA Straw Tube Tracker using the LOcal Track Finder (LOTF) algorithm

Abstract:We present the LOcal Track Finder (LOTF) algorithm, a method that performs charged-particle trajectory reconstruction using the Straw Tube Tracker, one of the central trackers of the antiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt (PANDA) detector. The algorithm builds upon the neighboring relations of the tubes to connect individual hits and form track candidates. In addition, it uses a local fitting procedure to handle regions where several tracks overlap and utilizes a system of virtual nodes to reconstruct the z-information of the particle trajectories. We generated 30,000 events to assess the performance of our approach and compared our results to two other track reconstruction methods. LOTF has (1) an average of 85\% of found tracks, (2) the largest number of Fully Pure tracks, (3) the lowest amount of incorrect reconstructions, and (4) is significantly faster than the other two approaches. Further, we compared the z-reconstruction performance with one of the two alternative methods and show that LOTF improves the median z-error by a factor of 8.7. Finally, we tested our method using 3,750 data sets composed of 4 events each, showing that our approach handles cases in which events are mixed. The raw (without parallelization) average reconstruction rate is about 68,000 hits/s, which makes the present algorithm promising for online data selection and processing.

Abstract:The PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment at the Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research is going to study strong interactions at the scale at which quarks are confined to form hadrons. A continuous beam of antiproton, provided by the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR), will impinge on a fixed hydrogen target. The antiproton beam momentum spans from 1.5 GeV {Natural units, c=1} to 15 GeV \cite{physics2009report}, will create optimal conditions for studying many different aspects of hadron physics, including hyperon physics. Precision physics studies require a highly efficient particle track reconstruction. The Straw Tube Tracker in PANDA is the main component for that purpose. It has a hexagonal geometry, consisting of 4224 gas-filled tubes arranged in 26 layers and six sectors. However, the challenge is reconstructing low momentum charged particles given the complex detector geometry and the strongly curved particle trajectory. This paper presents the first application of a geometric deep learning pipeline to track reconstruction in the PANDA experiment. The pipeline reconstructs more than 95\% of particle tracks and creates less than 0.3\% fake tracks. The promising results make the pipeline a strong candidate algorithm for the experiment.

Strategy for fitting source strength and reconstruction procedure in radioactive particle tracking

Abstract:The Radioactive Particle Tracking (RPT) technique is widely applied to study the dynamic properties of flows inside a reactor. Usually, a single radioactive particle that is neutrally buoyant with respect to the phase is used as a tracker. The particle moves inside a 3D volume of interest, and its positions are determined by an array of scintillation detectors, which count the incoming photons. The particle position coordinates are calculated by using a reconstruction procedure that solves a minimization problem between the measured counts and calibration data. Although previous studies have described the influence of specified factors on the RPT resolution and sensitivities, the question of how to choose an appropriate source strength and reconstruction procedure for the given RPT setup remains an unsolved problem. This work describes and applies the original strategy for fitting both the source strength and the sampling time interval to a specified RPT setup to guarantee a required accuracy of measurements. Additionally, the measurement accuracy of an RPT setup can be significantly increased by changing the reconstruction procedure. The results of the simulations, based on the Monte Carlo approach, have demonstrated that the proposed strategy allows for the successful implementation of the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principle when designing the RPT setup. The limitations and drawbacks of the proposed procedure are also presented.

Abstract:A straight-line track model is developed,and validity of Kalman filter track reconstruction algorithm with the track model was verified in detail.It shows that given sufficient hits track parameters converge to true values.The track reconstruction program is implemented in MarlinTPC reconstruction framework in practice.By choosing track reconstruction parameters reasonably,the program discriminates noise efficiently and reconstructs tracks.The algorithm is valuable in track reconstruction of large prototypes.

Abstract:The expected performance of track reconstruction with LHC events using the CMS silicon tracker is presented. Track finding and fitting is accomplished with Kalman Filter techniques that achieve efficiencies above 99% on single muons with pT>1 GeV/c. Difficulties arise in the context of standard LHC events with a high density of charged particles, where the rate of fake combinatorial tracks is very large for low pT tracks, and nuclear interactions in the tracker material reduce the tracking efficiency for charged hadrons. Recent improvements with the CMS track reconstruction now allow to efficiently reconstruct charged tracks with pT down to few hundred MeV/c and as few as three crossed layers, with a very small fake fraction, by making use of an optimal rejection of fake tracks in conjunction with an iterative tracking procedure.

Handling Structural Mismatches in Real-time Opera Tracking

Abstract:Algorithms for reliable real-time score following in live opera promise a lot of useful applications such as automatic subtitles display, or real-time video cutting in live streaming. Until now, such systems were based on the strong assumption that an opera performance follows the structure of the score linearly. However, this is rarely the case in practice, because of different opera versions and directors' cutting choices. In this paper, we propose a two-level solution to this problem. We introduce a real-time-capable, high-resolution (HR) tracker that can handle jumps or repetitions at specific locations provided to it. We then combine this with an additional low-resolution (LR) tracker that can handle all sorts of mismatches that can occur at any time, with some imprecision, and can re-direct the HR tracker if the latter is `lost' in the score. We show that the combination of the two improves tracking robustness in the presence of strong structural mismatches.

Abstract:This paper proposes a gradient descent based restoration method of track irregularity. Based on the theory of asymmetric chord-reference method (CRM), the restoration of track irregularity is described as an optimization problem for an underdetermined linear system. Gradient descent method is employed to solve this optimization problem, where a quadratic cost function considering penalization is used. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, an inspection trolley was setup and used in a field test on a scaled bridge model. Comparison between the proposed method and level measurement validates a good accuracy of gradient descent based restoration method. Compared with traditional method which needs a specially designed inverse filter, the proposed method has a clear physical meaning, which only needs configuration of asymmetric CRM and measured chord reference value to establish the optimization model. This suggests that gradient descent method has good operability in the field test. And the repeatability assessment reveals that the proposed method has a good track irregularity restoration reproduction capacity.

Abstract:In high energy physics (HEP) experiments, the reconstruction of charged particle trajectories is one of the most fundamental yet computationally expensive parts of event processing. At future hadron colliders such as the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), there can be up to ten thousand particles per event. This increases the track reconstruction time by a factor about 5 compared to the current tracking environment. Efficient and fast tracking software is necessary to maintain and improve the tracking performance. This can benefit from both fast tracking algorithms and modern computing architectures with many cores and accelerators. The Acts (A Common Tracking Software) project encapsulates the current ATLAS tracking software into an experiment-independent software designed for modern computing architectures. It provides a set of high-level track reconstruction tools agnostic to the details of the detector and magnetic field configuration. Particular emphasis is placed on thread-safety of the code in order to support concurrent event processing with context-dependent detector conditions, such as detector alignments or calibrations. Acts aims in addition to be a research and development platform for studying innovative tracking techniques and exploiting modern hardware architectures.

Abstract:The reconstruction of charged particle trajectories is a crucial challenge of particle physics experiments as it directly impacts particle reconstruction and physics performances. To reconstruct these trajectories, different reconstruction algorithms are used sequentially. Each of these algorithms uses many configuration parameters that must be fine-tuned to properly account for the detector/experimental setup, the available CPU budget and the desired physics performance. Examples of such parameters are cut values limiting the algorithm's search space, approximations accounting for complex phenomenons, or parameters controlling algorithm performance. Until now, these parameters had to be optimised by human experts, which is inefficient and raises issues for the long-term maintainability of such algorithms. Previous experience using machine learning for particle reconstruction (such as the TrackML challenge) has shown that they can be easily adapted to different experiments by learning directly from the data. We propose to bring the same approach to the classic track reconstruction algorithms by connecting them to an agent-driven optimiser, allowing us to find the best input parameters using an iterative tuning approach. We have so far demonstrated this method on different track reconstruction algorithms within A Common Tracking Software (ACTS) framework using the Open Data Detector (ODD). These algorithms include the trajectory seed reconstruction and selection, the particle vertex reconstruction and the generation of simplified material maps used for trajectory reconstruction.

A Kalman Filter for track reconstruction in very large time projection chambers

Abstract:This study introduces a Kalman Filter tailored for homogeneous gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs), adapted from the algorithm utilized by the ALICE experiment. In order to describe semi-circular paths in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field, we introduce a novel mirror rotation technique into the Kalman Filter algorithm, enabling effective tracking of trajectories of varying lengths, including those with multiple circular paths within the detector, also known as "loopers". Demonstrated relative improvements of up to 80% in electron momentum resolution and up to 50% in muon and pion momentum resolution underscore the significance of this enhancement. Significant improvements in the reconstruction efficiency for relatively short low momentum "looper" tracks are also shown. Such advancements hold promise not only for the future of the ALICE TPC but also for neutrino high-pressure gas TPCs, where loopers become significant owing to the randomness of production points and their relatively low energies in neutrino interactions. In particular, an improvement in low energy electron reconstruction, for which the production of "looping" tracks is likely and the impact of the new algorithm is directly demonstrated, could significantly impact the quality of flux determination, which in accelerator neutrino experiments relies on the measurement of $\nu_e$ electron scatterings.

Generalizing mkFit and its Application to HL-LHC

Abstract:mkFit is an implementation of the Kalman filter-based track reconstruction algorithm that exploits both thread- and data-level parallelism. In the past few years the project transitioned from the R&D phase to deployment in the Run-3 offline workflow of the CMS experiment. The CMS tracking performs a series of iterations, targeting reconstruction of tracks of increasing difficulty after removing hits associated to tracks found in previous iterations. mkFit has been adopted for several of the tracking iterations, which contribute to the majority of reconstructed tracks. When tested in the standard conditions for production jobs, speedups in track pattern recognition are on average of the order of 3.5x for the iterations where it is used (3-7x depending on the iteration). Multiple factors contribute to the observed speedups, including vectorization and a lightweight geometry description, as well as improved memory management and single precision. Efficient vectorization is achieved with both the icc and the gcc (default in CMSSW) compilers and relies on a dedicated library for small matrix operations, Matriplex, which has recently been released in a public repository. While the mkFit geometry description already featured levels of abstraction from the actual Phase-1 CMS tracker, several components of the implementations were still tied to that specific geometry. We have further generalized the geometry description and the configuration of the run-time parameters, in order to enable support for the Phase-2 upgraded tracker geometry for the HL-LHC and potentially other detector configurations. The implementation strategy and high-level code changes required for the HL-LHC geometry are presented. Speedups in track building from mkFit imply that track fitting becomes a comparably time consuming step of the tracking chain.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel method for low maintenance, low ambiguity in-situ drift velocity monitoring in large volume Time Projection Chambers (TPCs). The method was developed and deployed for the 40m^3 TPC tracker system of the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN, which has a one meter of drift length. The method relies on a low-cost multi-wire proportional chamber placed next to the TPC to be monitored, downstream with respect to the particle flux. Reconstructed tracks in the TPC are matched to hits in the monitoring chamber, called the Geometry Reference Chamber (GRC). Relative differences in positions of hits in the GRC are used to estimate the drift velocity, removing the need for an accurate alignment of the TPC to the GRC. An important design requirement on the GRC was minimal added complexity to the existing system, in particular, compatibility with Front-End Electronics cards already used to read out the TPCs. Moreover, the GRC system was designed to operate both in large and small particle fluxes. The system is capable of monitoring the evolution of the drift velocity inside the TPC down to a one permil precision, with a few minutes of data collection.

Potentiality of automatic parameter tuning suite available in ACTS track reconstruction software framework

Abstract:Particle tracking is among the most sophisticated and complex part of the full event reconstruction chain. A number of reconstruction algorithms work in a sequence to build these trajectories from detector hits. These algorithms use many configuration parameters that need to be fine-tuned to properly account for the detector/experimental setup, the available CPU budget and the desired physics performance. The most popular method to tune these parameters is hand-tuning using brute-force techniques. These techniques can be inefficient and raise issues for the long-term maintainability of such algorithms. The open-source track reconstruction software framework known as "A Common Tracking Framework (ACTS)" offers an alternative solution to these parameter tuning techniques through the use of automatic parameter optimization algorithms. ACTS comes equipped with an auto-tuning suite that provides necessary setup for performing optimization of input parameters belonging to track reconstruction algorithms. The user can choose the tunable parameters in a flexible way and define a cost/benefit function for optimizing the full reconstruction chain. The fast execution speed of ACTS allows the user to run several iterations of optimization within a reasonable time bracket. The performance of these optimizers has been demonstrated on different track reconstruction algorithms such as trajectory seed reconstruction and selection, particle vertex reconstruction and generation of simplified material map, and on different detector geometries such as Generic Detector and Open Data Detector (ODD). We aim to bring this approach to all aspects of trajectory reconstruction by having a more flexible integration of tunable parameters within ACTS.

A new track finding algorithm based on a multi-dimensional extension of the Hough Transform

Abstract:We introduce a new pattern recognition algorithm for track finding in High Energy Physics Experiments based on an extension of the Hough Transform to multiple dimensions. A remarkable property of this algorithm is that the execution time is simply proportional to the total number of the hits to be processed, making it particularly attractive for high occupancy situations. The algorithm needs to be trained using a sufficiently large set of simulated tracks. The same track finding algorithm can be used for very different detector geometries and only the set of simulated tracks used for training needs to be changed. The particular structure of the algorithm also lends itself naturally to parallel hardware implementations which, combined with its intrinsic flexibility, should provide a most powerful tool for triggering at future colliders.

Tracker alignment in CMS$:$interplay with pixel local reconstruction

Abstract:The CMS silicon tracking system measures the trajectories of charged particles with a hit resolution of the order of microns in the pixel detector and tens of microns in the strip detector. One of the most important inputs for track reconstruction is the precision with which the tracker geometry is known. Therefore the position, orientation, and curvature of each tracker sensor must be precisely determined. Changes in the operating conditions can cause movements in the different substructures and also in the sensors. For maintaining the targeted precision, frequent corrections are needed, and the procedure to determine these corrections is commonly referred to as tracker alignment. Due to accumulated radiation during data taking, the response of the sensors changes over time. This affects the local reconstruction of pixel hits and consequently the result of the alignment procedure. In this contribution, the alignment procedure in CMS is introduced, as well as the dedicated calibration for the pixel local reconstruction. The effect of the change in the local reconstruction due to aging of the sensors on the alignment procedure is discussed.

Abstract:The proposed STCF (Super Tau Charm Facility) is an electron-positron collider with high luminosity. Under the conditions of a high radiation, high counting-rate environment, and a pure physics event rate of up to 400 kHz, for a Level 1 (L1) trigger system, it is crucial to suppress background events to an acceptable rate. To this end, this study presents a threedimensional (3D) track reconstruction algorithm for the preresearch of the STCF main drift chamber (MDC) L1 trigger. The proposed algorithm can reject tracks outside the interaction region and provide 3D track information to the global trigger logic (GTL) of an L1 trigger for further analysis with other sub-detectors. By using hit information from the MDC and the transverse momentum ( pT ) and azimuthal angle (ϕ) from previous research on two-dimensional reconstruction, this study reconstructs the z (longitudinal) position for the track vertex using a neural network-based method with an innovative stereo track segment design. The neural network is trained using high granularity quantization (HGQ) to reduce resource consumption while maintaining resolution. The proposed method is implemented into a field programmable gate array (FPGA) using the hls4ml. The achieved resolution of the z-vertex reconstruction of a single track (z ∈ [-50, 50]cm) is approximately 2.8 cm, which can ensure rejecting 97% beam background tracks in a ± 3σ interval.
