Abstract:<p>Flexible sensors have shown great potential in remote health monitoring, body movements track, electronic skin, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. Hydrogels possess exceptional stretchability, flexibility and biocompatibility that that render them appealing candidates for wearable flexible sensors. Among them, considerable efforts have been devoted to developing conductive hydrogels to achieve multifunctional wearable sensing through using functional groups/additives/nanofillers to modify the hydrogel network in recent years. This review summarizes recent advances of applications of hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors, such as sweat sampling and flexible electrodes, strain/pressure sensors and touch panels, focuses on the multifunctional conductive hydrogels-based flexible wearable sensors with self-healing, self-adhesion, or anti-freezing capabilities. A brief introduction to representative synthesis methods and strategies of conductive hydrogels is also presented. In the end, we also provide a personal perspective on the future development, and address the remaining challenges in the commercialization of conductive hydrogels-based multifunctional flexible wearable sensors.</p>

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels used as flexible wearable sensor devices have attracted considerable attention because of their easy preparation, biocompatibility, and macro/micro mechanosensitive properties. However, developing an integrated conductive hydrogel that combines high mechanical stability, strong adhesion, and excellent mechanosensitive properties to meet practical requirements remains a great challenge owing to the incompatibility of properties. Herein, we prepare a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel by introducing high-modulus bacterial cellulose (BC) to form the skeleton of double networks, which exhibit great mechanical properties in both tensile (83.4 kPa, 1235.9% strain) and compressive (207.2 kPa, 79.9% strain) stress-strain tests. Besides, the fabricated hydrogels containing high-concentration Ca2+ show excellent anti-freezing (high ionic conductivities of 1.92 and 0.36 S/m at room temperature and -35 degrees C, respectively) properties. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism based on the conductive units and applied voltage are investigated to the benefit of the practical applications of prepared hydrogels. Therefore, the designed and fabricated hydrogels provide a novel strategy and can serve as candidates in the fields of sensors, ionic skins, and soft robots.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels (CHs) have shown great potential in smart wearable devices and energy storage due to their unique advantages, such as the mechanical properties and physiological characteristics similar to human skins and tissues (stretchability, low modulus, flexibility, biocompatibility, etc.), the function and structure design with diversity, and the transformation of external stimuli (force, deformation, temperature, etc.) into electronic signals. Currently, a large number of CHs have been developed and designed for specific applications. In this review, we first focus on the recent progress on the synthesis strategies of all kinds of CHs. Their categories involve conductive nanomaterial-based, free ionic-based, and conductive polymer-based CHs. Whereafter, the promising applications of CHs in flexible electronic devices are discussed in detail. The relevant applications include wearable strain sensors, bioelectronics, epidermal patch electrodes, temperature sensors, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), energy storage devices, and gas sensors. Finally, we also discuss the future research direction of CHs and the possible challenges in the field.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Hydrogels have been attracting increasing attention in wearable electronics, due to their intrinsic biomimetic features, highly tunable chemical-physical properties (mechanical, electrical, etc), and excellent biocompatibility. Among many proposed varieties, conductive polymer-based hydrogels (CPHs) have emerged as a promising candidate for future wearable sensor designs, with a capability of realizing desired features using different tuning strategies ranging from molecular design (with a low lengthscale of 10-10 m) to micro-structural configuration (up to a lengthscale of 10-2 m). However, considerable challenges remain to be overcome, such as the limited strain sensing range due to the mechanical strength, the signal loss/instability caused by swelling/deswelling, the significant hysteresis of sensing signal, the de-hydration induced malfunctions, the surface/interfacial failure during manufacturing/processing, etc. This review aims to offer a targeted scan of recent advancements in CPH based wearable sensor technology, from the establishment of dedicated structure-property relationships in the lab to the advanced manufacturing routes for potential scale-up production. The application of CPHs in wearable sensors is also explored, with suggested new research avenues and prospects for CPHs in the future also included text goes here.

Abstract:Due to the good biocompatibility and easy regulation of hydrogels, hydrogel-based flexible sensors have flourished in the fields of wearable electronics, electronic skin, and soft robotics in recent years. The performance of conductive hydrogel-based sensors is greatly influenced by the properties of hydrogel functional materials. This review focuses on and summarizes the preparation strategies and general methods of functional conductive hydrogels for flexible sensors. Firstly, the general properties and improvement methods of conductive hydrogels are briefly introduced, mainly including electrical conductivity and mechanical properties. In practical applications, some additional functions that enable conductive hydrogel-based sensors to maintain excellent performance in the face of complex or harsh application conditions are indispensable. The strategies for endowing conductive hydrogels with additional functions mainly include self-healing properties, anti-swelling properties, anti-freezing properties, and self-adhesion properties are summarized in this review. The application of functional conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors, as well as the development prospects and challenges based on functional conductive hydrogels are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels, characterized by their excellent conductivity and flexibility, have attracted widespread attention and research in the field of flexible wearable sensors. This paper reviews the application progress, related challenges, and future prospects of conductive hydrogels in flexible wearable sensors. Initially, the basic properties and classifications of conductive hydrogels are introduced. Subsequently, this paper discusses in detail the specific applications of conductive hydrogels in different sensor applications, such as motion detection, medical diagnostics, electronic skin, and human–computer interactions. Finally, the application prospects and challenges are summarized. Overall, the exceptional performance and multifunctionality of conductive hydrogels make them one of the most important materials for future wearable technologies. However, further research and innovation are needed to overcome the challenges faced and to realize the wider application of conductive hydrogels in flexible sensors.

Abstract:The progress of soft robot industry has driven the development of electronic devices. Electronic devices used in electronic skin or wearable electronic devices require conductive materials with high sensitivity and stretchability, while traditional inorganic conductive materials such as metals and metal oxides cannot meet both conductivity and flexibility. Conductive hydrogels realize the complementary characteristics of conductive materials and hydrogels. On the basis of conductive materials ensuring electrical conductivity, hydrogels make up for the defect of unbendable material to a large extent and become the substitute of traditional inorganic conductive material. In order to adapt to different working environments, conductive hydrogels also have more excellent properties, such as mechanical properties, self-healing properties, and resistance to extreme environments, which further broadens the application field of conductive hydrogels. So far, conductive hydrogels have found wide applications in biomedicine, sensors and energy storage devices. In this paper, the research progress of conductive hydrogels in recent years is reviewed, and the conductive mechanisms of hydrogels can be divided into electronic conductive mechanism and ionic conductive mechanism. Then, the properties and applications of conductive hydrogels are described. Finally, the problems and shortcomings of conductive hydrogels were summarized, and the future development of conductive hydrogels was prospected.

Abstract:The development of wearable electronic devices requires stretchable, highly conductive, self-recovery, and ideally environmentally resistant sensors. Hydrogels are ideal candidates for fabricating flexible sensors due to their stretchability and unique ionic conduction pathways. However, the intrinsic incompatibility of the conductive and elastic networks in hydrogels and the high hydrophilicity of the hydrogel network led to difficulties in obtaining hydrogels with strong mechanical properties, high conductivity, rapid self-recovery ability, and antiswelling properties. Based on the single-core multidentate coordination strategy, single-core multidentate coordinated chitosan/poly(acrylic acid)/Al3+ (CPAL) hydrogels were prepared with Al3+ as a metal coordination center and the amino group of chitosan (CS) and the carboxyl group of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as coordination atoms. The obtained hydrogels exhibit excellent tensile stress/strain: 1.11 ± 0.04 MPa/2472.79 ± 99.27%, rapid self-recovery capability (mechanical properties were fully recovered in 10 min), antifatigue property, good conductivity (1.09 ± 0.02 S/m), and antiswelling property. Furthermore, flexible sensors based on CPAL hydrogels demonstrated multiplex mode sensing. It was worth noting that the flexible devices based on CPAL hydrogel could not only use Morse code table to realize mechanical-information visualization but also detect the human condition in multiple dimensions, including temperature, electromyographic (EMG), and electrocardiogram (ECG). In this work, we reported a single-core multidentate coordination strategy that provided a pathway for fabricating the ideal hydrogel-based flexible sensors, showing great potential for wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels combine the properties of both hydrogels and conductors, making them soft, flexible, and biocompatible. These properties enable them to conform to irregular surfaces, stretch and bend without losing their electrical conductivity, and interface with biological systems. Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted intensive attention in the field of flexible electronics due to their excellent biocompatibility, suitable Young's modulus, and outstanding electrical conductivity. However, the inherent water-rich feature and insufficient interfacial adhesion of hydrogels hinder the stability and reliability of hydrogel-based devices for applications in complex environments. Herein, we design a novel polyacrylamide/polydopamine hydrogel using deep eutectic solvent (DES) and alkaline solution as the polymerization medium, and the as-obtained hydrogel is both self-adhesive (20.20 kPa for tissue) and anti-freezing properties (-20 °C). The combination of DES and alkaline solution replaces pure DES, which endows the conditions for oxidative polymerization of dopamine to ensure the adhesion performance of the hydrogel, and also makes the hydrogel retain the conductivity and low melting point characteristics of DES. Furthermore, biocompatible carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs) are embedded into the hydrogel to further enhance the mechanical properties by about 3 times through the nano-reinforcement effect. Remarkably, the hydrogel can be adhered to the skin as a bioelectrode for electrocardiograph, and can be used as strain sensors to monitor human movements even after storing for 15 days at -20 °C. Meanwhile, the electrochemical characterization of supercapacitors using this hydrogel as an electrolyte shows great application potential.

Abstract:Electroactive hydrogels, which exhibit intelligent deformation in response to electric fields, have garnered significant attention as potential actuating materials for flexible sensors, smart devices, soft actuators, and artificial muscles. In the process of converting mechanical energy to electrical energy, electroactive hydrogels can achieve efficient energy conversion and charge transfer due to their porous structure, high water solubility, flexibility, and electrical conductivity. However, the limited performance of single-functional electroactive hydrogels severely hampers their development prospects. To expand the application areas of these gels in self-powered devices, smart response devices, and other directions, there is a need to design electroactive hydrogels with multiple properties. In this paper, we present a systematic review of the mechanism and preparation strategies of electroactive hydrogels in response to electric fields. We also discuss the design strategy for electroactive hydrogels with multiple properties and provide an overview of the current progress in their applications. Furthermore, we analyze the role and advantages of electroactive hydrogels. Finally, we address the existing problems in electroactive hydrogel research and offer suggestions to solve them, and we hope that this design idea will inspire readers and researchers in the field.

Abstract:Flexible electronic devices to obtain accurate and efficient information interactions between humans and machines have gained increasing attention in recent years. A series of soft materials for flexible electronics have been developed to improve device performance in terms of electrical and mechanical properties. Among them, conductive polymer-based hydrogels (CPHs), which combine the tunable electronic properties of conductive polymers and the soft mechanical properties of hydrogels, are promising candidates for next-generation wearable electronic devices. This review summarized the material design and preparation of CPHs, and presented the properties of CPHs, including tunable conductivity, outstanding mechanical performance, biocompatibility, self-healing capability, resistance to freezing, and solution processability. In particular, their emerging applications in flexible electronics devices including flexible supercapacitors, flexible sensors, and biomedical electronics are highlighted. Furthermore, perspectives on existing challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogel has recently garnered significant research attention due to its potential applications in the field of wearable and flexible electronics. Nonetheless, the integration of multifunctional and synergistic advantages, including reliable electronic properties, high swelling capacity, exceptional mechanical characteristics, and self-adhesive properties, presents an ongoing challenge. In this study, we have developed an ionic conductive hydrogel through the co-polymerization of 4-Acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) and sodium acrylate using UV curing technology. The hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, superior swelling capacity, and remarkable self-adhesive attributes. The hydrogel serves as a highly sensitive strain sensor, enabling precise monitoring of both substantial and subtle human motions. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates the capability to adhere to human skin, functioning as a human-machine interface for the detection of physiological signals, including electromyogram (EMG) signals, with low interfacial impedance. This work is anticipated to yield a new class of stretchable and conductive materials with diverse potential applications, ranging from flexible sensors and wearable bio-electronics to contributions in the field of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:This work reviews the recent progress of conductive hydrogels for bioelectronic devices from the aspect of classifications and typical applications. Furthermore, the current challenges and the corresponding strategies for the future development are in‐depth discussed, aiming to promote the practical application of conductive hydrogels in the fields of biomedicine and clinical medicine. Conductive hydrogels (CHs) for flexible bioelectronic devices have raised great attention due to their tunable mechanical performances, adhesion, anti‐swelling, and biocompatibility. This review summarizes the current development of conductive hydrogel‐based flexible bioelectronic devices in the aspect of classifications and applications. Firstly, the conductive hydrogels are classified into two kinds according to the types of conductivity: ionic conductive hydrogels and electronic conductive hydrogels (hydrogel based on pure conductive materials, introducing conductive micro/nano‐materials). Secondly, the applications of conductive hydrogels for bioelectronic device, like wearable devices (strain sensor, body fluid detector, serviced in extreme environment), tissue engineering (skin, heart, nerve, muscle), and other applications (bionic robot, cancer treatment), are highly illustrated. Finally, a depth outlook is given, which aims to promote the development of this field in the future.

Abstract:Self-healing, self-adhesive, and stretchable bio-based conductive hydrogels exhibit properties similar to those of biological tissues, making them an urgent requirement for emerging wearable devices. The primary challenge lies in devising straightforward strategies to accomplish all the aforementioned performances and achieve equilibrium among them. This study used the natural compound thioctic acid (TA) and modified cellulose to prepare conductive hydrogels with stretchability, healing, and self-adhesion through a simple one-step strategy. Metastable poly(TA) was obtained through ring-opening polymerization of lithiated TA, followed by the introduction of dopamine-grafted cellulose nanofibers (DCNF) to stabilize poly(TA) and prepare PTALi/DCNF hydrogels with the aforementioned properties. The hydrogels demonstrated remarkable conductivity, attributed to the existence of Li + ions, with a maximum conductivity of 17.36 mS/cm. The self-healing capacity of the hydrogels was achieved owing to the presence of disulfide bond in TA. The introduction of DCNF can effectively stabilize poly(TA), endow the hydrogel with self-adhesion ability, improve the mechanical properties, and further enhance the formability of hydrogels. Generally, bio-based PTALi/DCNF hydrogels with stretchability, self-healing, self-adhesion, and conductivity are obtained through a simple strategy and used as a sensor with a wide response range and high sensitivity. Abstract:Abstract Wearable hydrogel sensors provide a user-friendly option for wearable electronics and align well with the existing manufacturing strategy for connecting and communicating with large numbers of Internet of Things devices. This is attributed to their components and structures, which exhibit exceptional adaptability, scalability, bio-compatibility, and self-healing properties, reminiscent of human skin. This review focuses on the recent research on principal structural elements of wearable hydrogels: toughening networks and conductive networks, highlighting the strategies for enhancing mechanical and electrical properties. Wearable hydrogel sensors are categorized for a comprehensive exploration of their composition, mechanism, and design approach. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of wearable hydrogels and offers guidance for the design of components and structures in order to develop high-performance wearable hydrogel sensors.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogel-based flexible sensors have garnered significant interest in the realm of smart wearable electronics. Nevertheless, the development of multifunctional hydrogels continues to be an essential challenge, given that conventional hydrogels typically exhibit singular functionality and frail mechanical properties. In this study, inspired by mussels, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel with superior stretchability, adhesion, pH sensitivity, and antibacterial activation was prepared with polydopamine (PDA)-coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) doped. Particularly, a semi-interpenetrating network structure with multiple cross-linking sites was constructed, resulting in the hydrogel with a super-stretching ability (1904%) and fatigue resistance. The PDA-CNTs in the system not only imparted self-adhesive properties to the hydrogel but also facilitated efficient ion and electron transfer with the synergistic effect of Al3+, thereby enhancing the sensitivity (GF=3.81) and cycling stability. The flexible sensor based on this hydrogel could be applicable to detect various human activities and also exhibited huge potential in the field of information sensing and transmission.
