Abstract:We show that the static structure factor of general many-body systems with $U(1)$ symmetry has a lower bound determined only by the ground state Chern number. Our bound relies only on causality and non-negative energy dissipation, and holds for a wide range of systems. We apply our theory to (fractional) Chern insulators, (fractional) quantum spin Hall insulators, topological superconductors, and chiral spin liquids. Our results uncover a universal feature of topological phases beyond the quantized response.

Abstract:The Chern number has been widely used to describe the topological properties of periodic structures in momentum space. Here, we introduce a real-space spin Chern number for the optical near fields of finite-sized structures. This new spin Chern number is intrinsically quantized and equal to the structure's Euler characteristic. The relationship is robust against continuous deformation of the structure's geometry and is irrelevant to the specific material constituents or external excitation. Structure factor and topological bound of twisted bilayer semiconductors at fractional fillings

Abstract:The structure factor is a useful observable for probing charge density correlations in real materials, and its long-wavelength behavior encapsulated by ``quantum weight'' has recently gained prominence in the study of quantum geometry and topological phases of matter. Here we employ the static structure factor, S(q), to explore the phase diagram of twisted transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), specifically tMoTe2, at a filling factors n=1/3, 2/3 under varying displacement fields. Our results reveal a topological phase transition between a fractional Chern insulator (FCI) and a generalized Wigner crystal (GWC). This transition is marked by the appearance of Bragg peaks at charge-density-wave vectors, and simultaneously, large decrease of S(q) at small q which lowers the interaction energy. We further calculate the quantum weight of various FCI states, verifying the universal topological bound. Our findings provide new insights into the phase diagram of twisted TMDs and establish a general framework for characterizing topological phases through structure factor analysis.

Quantum weight: A fundamental property of quantum many-body systems

Abstract:We introduce the concept of quantum weight as a ground state property of quantum many-body systems that is encoded in the static structure factor and characterizes density fluctuation at long wavelengths. The quantum weight contains a wealth of information about dielectric responses and optical properties of the system, and is closely related to its quantum geometry. For systems with short-range interactions or Coulomb systems in low dimensions, we show that the many-body quantum metric (which measures the change of the ground state under twisted boundary condition) can be determined directly from the quantum weight that is a part of an equal-time ground-state correlation function. On the other hand, for three-dimensional Coulomb systems, we use dielectric sum rules to derive upper and lower bounds on their quantum weight in terms of electron density, static dielectric constant, and plasmon energy. Our work highlights quantum weight as a fundamental material parameter, which can be experimentally determined by x-ray scattering or electron loss spectroscopy.

Abstract:A common feature of topological phases of matter is the fractionalization of the quantum number in their low-energy excitations. Such information is encoded in their ground state wave functions, but emerges in the bipartite entanglement spectra. The symmetric extensive bipartition is an effective novel method to create deconfined fractionalized edge particles in the reduced subsystem, which lead to quantum critical behavior associated with the transition from the topological phase to its adjacent trivial phase. Here we report the interesting results revealed by applying this method to the one-dimensional SO(5) symmetric valence-bond solid state being a spin-2 symmetry protected topological phase. From the finite-size entanglement spectrum, we find the lowest level to be an SO(5) singlet with a logarithmic entanglement entropy. Surprisingly, the first excited level is also an SO(5) singlet and the spectral gap scales with the subsystem size as L-A(-nu) with nu similar or equal to 1.978. In the thermodynamic limit, a novel quantum criticality emerges with SO(5) spinons and their four-body singlet bound states as elementary excitations, hence ruling out the possibility of being described by a conformal field theory. Moreover, the entanglement Hamiltonian can be determined as an SO(5) symmetric nearest neighbor spin-3/2 quadruple-quadruple interaction with a negative coupling. Our work thus demonstrates the power of this new method in the study of quantum criticality encoded in the topological ground states.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of quantum weight as a fundamental property of insulating states of matter that is encoded in the ground-state static structure and measures quantum fluctuation in electrons' center of mass. We find a sum rule that directly relates quantum weight -- a ground state property -- with the negative-first moment of the optical conductivity above the gap frequency. Building on this connection to optical absorption, we derive both an upper bound and a lower bound on quantum weight in terms of electron density, dielectric constant, and energy gap. Therefore, quantum weight constitutes a key material parameter that can be experimentally determined from X-ray scattering.

Three-dimensional fracton topological orders with boundary Toeplitz braiding

Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically study a class of 3D non-liquid states that show exotic boundary phenomena in the thermodynamical limit. More concretely, we focus on a class of 3D fracton topological orders formed via stacking 2D twisted $\mathbb{Z}_N$ topologically ordered layers along $z$-direction. Nearby layers are coupled while maintaining translation symmetry along $z$ direction. The effective field theory is given by the infinite-component Chern-Simons (iCS) field theory, with an integer-valued symmetric block-tridiagonal Toeplitz $K$-matrix whose size is thermodynamically large. With open boundary conditions (OBC) along $z$, certain choice of $K$-matrices exhibits exotic boundary ``Toeplitz braiding'', where the mutual braiding phase angle between two anyons at opposite boundaries oscillates and remains non-zero in the thermodynamic limit. In contrast, in trivial case, the mutual braiding phase angle decays exponentially to zero in the thermodynamical limit. As a necessary condition, this phenomenon requires the existence of boundary zero modes in the $K$-matrix spectrum under OBC. We categorize nontrivial $K$-matrices into two distinct types. Each type-I possesses two boundary zero modes, whereas each type-II possesses only one boundary zero mode. Interestingly, the integer-valued Hamiltonian matrix of the familiar 1D SSH can be used as a non-trivial $K$-matrix. Importantly, since large-gauge-invariance ensures integer quantized $K$-matrix entries, global symmetries are not needed to protect these zero modes. We also present numerical simulation as well as finite size scaling, further confirming the above analytical results. Symmetry fractionalization is also discussed.

Abstract:We numerically calculate the dynamic structure factor of the simplest two dimensional $Z_2$ lattice gauge theory. This provides an important benchmark for future experiments which will explore the dynamics of such models. As would be expected, the spectrum is gapped away from the critical point, and can be understood in terms of the elementary excitations.

Boundary deconfined quantum criticality at transitions between symmetry-protected topological chains

Abstract:Decades of research have revealed a deep understanding of topological quantum matter with protected edge modes. We report that even richer physics emerges when tuning between two topological phases of matter whose respective edge modes are incompatible. The frustration at the edge leads to novel boundary physics, such as symmetry-breaking phases with exotic non-Landau transitions -- even when the edge is zero-dimensional. As a minimal case study we consider spin chains with $\mathbb{Z}_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry, exhibiting two nontrivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. At the bulk 1+1D critical transition between these SPT phases, we find two stable 0+1D boundary phases, each spontaneously breaking one of the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetries. Furthermore, we find that a single boundary parameter tunes a non-Landau boundary critical transition between these two phases. This constitutes a 0+1D version of an exotic phenomenon driven by charged vortex condensation known as deconfined quantum criticality. This work highlights the rich unexplored physics of criticality between nontrivial topological phases and provides insights into the burgeoning field of gapless topological phases.

Abstract:The interplay of topological electronic band structures and strong interparticle interactions provides a promising path towards the constructive design of robust, long-range entangled many-body systems. As a prototype for such systems, we here study an exactly integrable, local model for a fractionalized topological insulator. Using a controlled perturbation theory about this limit, we demonstrate the existence of topological bands of zeros in the exact fermionic Green's function and show that in this model they do affect the topological invariant of the system, but not the quantized transport response. Close to (but prior to) the Higgs transition signaling the breakdown of fractionalization, the topological bands of zeros acquire a finite "lifetime." We also discuss the appearance of edge states and edge zeros at real space domain walls separating different phases of the system. Topological flat band models with arbitrary Chern numbers

Abstract:We report the theoretical discovery of a systematic scheme to produce topological flat bands (TFBs) with arbitrary Chern numbers. We find that generically a multi-orbital high Chern number TFB model can be constructed by considering multi-layer Chern number C=1 TFB models with enhanced translational symmetry. A series of models are presented as examples, including a two-band model on a triangular lattice with a Chern number C=3 and an $N$-band square lattice model with $C=N$ for an arbitrary integer $N$. In all these models, the flatness ratio for the TFBs is larger than 30 and increases with increasing Chern number. In the presence of appropriate inter-particle interactions, these models are likely to lead to the formation of novel Abelian and Non-Abelian fractional Chern insulators. As a simple example, we test the C=2 model with hardcore bosons at 1/3 filling and an intriguing fractional quantum Hall state is observed.

Abstract:We predict novel topological phases with broken time-reversal symmetry supporting the coexistence of opposite chiral edge states, which are fundamentally different from the photonic spin-Hall, valley-Hall, and higher-order topological phases. We find a fine-grained categorization of Chern insulators, their band topologies characterized by identical Chern numbers are completely different. Furthermore, we prove that different topologies cause zeros in their Bloch wave function overlaps, which imprint the band gap closing and appear at the degenerate points of topological phase transition. The Bloch wave function overlaps predict the reflection and refraction at a topological time boundary, and the overlap zeros ensure the existence of vanishing revival amplitude at critical times even though different topologies before and after the time boundary have identical Chern numbers. Reality of the Fundamental Topological Structure in the QCD Vacuum

Abstract:Long-range order of a specific kind has recently been found directly in configurations dominating the regularized QCD path integral. In particular, a low-dimensional global structure was identified in typical space-time distributions of topological charge defined via the overlap Dirac matrix. The presence of the order has been concluded from the fact that the structure disappears after random permutation of position coordinates in measured densities. Here we complete the argument for the reality of this structure (namely the conjecture that its existence is a consequence of QCD dynamics and not an artifact of the overlap-based definition of lattice topological field) by showing that the structure ceases to exist after randomizing the space-time coordinates of the underlying gauge field. This implies that the long-range order present in the overlap-based topological density is indeed a manifestation of the QCD vacuum, and that the notion of the fundamental structure (structure involving relevant features at all scales) is viable.
Wiener-Hopf factorization approach to a bulk-boundary correspondence and stability conditions for topological zero-energy modes

Abstract:Both the physics and applications of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases rely heavily on a principle known as bulk-boundary correspondence, which predicts the emergence of protected boundary-localized energy excitations (boundary states) if the bulk is topologically non-trivial. Current theoretical approaches formulate a bulk-boundary correspondence as an equality between a bulk and a boundary topological invariant, where the latter is a property of boundary states. However, such an equality does not offer insight about the stability or the sensitivity of the boundary states to external perturbations. To solve this problem, we adopt a technique known as the Wiener-Hopf factorization of matrix functions. Using this technique, we first provide an elementary proof of the equality of the bulk and the boundary invariants for one-dimensional systems with arbitrary boundary conditions in all Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes. This equality also applies to quasi-one-dimensional systems (e.g., junctions) formed by bulks belonging to the same symmetry class. We then show that only topologically non-trivial Hamiltonians can host stable zero-energy edge modes, where stability refers to continuous deformation of zero-energy excitations with external perturbations that preserve the symmetries of the class. By leveraging the Wiener-Hopf factorization, we establish bounds on the sensitivity of such stable zero-energy modes to external perturbations. Our results show that the Wiener-Hopf factorization is a natural tool to investigate bulk-boundary correspondence in quasi-one-dimensional fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases. Our results on the stability and sensitivity of zero modes are especially valuable for applications, including Majorana-based topological quantum computing.

Local Structure of Topological Charge Fluctuations in QCD

Abstract:We consider the lattice topological charge density introduced by Hasenfratz, Laliena, and Niedermayer and propose its eigenmode expansion as a tool to investigate the structure of topological charge fluctuations in QCD. The resulting effective density is built from local chiralities studied previously. At every order of the expansion, the density exactly sums up to the global topological charge, and the leading term describes the maximally smooth space-time distribution of charge relevant for propagating light fermions. We use this framework to demonstrate our previous suggestion that the bulk of the topological charge in QCD does not effectively appear in the form of quantized unit lumps. Our conclusion implies that it is unlikely that the mixing of ``would-be'' zero modes associated with such lumps is the prevalent microscopic mechanism for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. We also present the first results quantitatively characterizing the space-time behavior of effective densities. For coherent fluctuations contained in spherical regions, we find a continuous distribution of associated charges essentially ending at $\ensuremath{\approx}0.5.$
Optical Spectral Weight, Phase Stiffness and Tc Bounds for Trivial and Topological Flat Band Superconductors

Abstract:We present exact results that give insight into how interactions lead to transport and superconductivity in a flat band where the electrons have no kinetic energy. We obtain bounds for the optical spectral weight for flat band superconductors, that lead to upper bounds for the superfluid stiffness and the 2D $T_c$. We focus on on-site attraction $|U|$ on the Lieb lattice with trivial flat bands and on the $\pi$-flux model with topological flat bands. For trivial flat bands, the low-energy optical spectral weight $\widetilde{D}_\text{low} \leq \widetilde{n} |U| \Omega/2$ with $\widetilde{n} = \min\left(n,2-n\right)$, where $n$ is the flat band density and $\Omega$ the Marzari-Vanderbilt spread of the Wannier functions (WFs). We also obtain a lower bound involving the quantum metric. For topological flat bands, with an obstruction to localized WFs respecting all symmetries, we again obtain an upper bound for $D_{\rm low}$ linear in $|U|$. We discuss the insights obtained from our bounds by comparing them with mean-field and quantum Monte-Carlo results.

On the structure of wave functions in complex Chern-Simons theory

Abstract:We study the structure of wave functions in complex Chern-Simons theory on the complement of a hyperbolic knot, emphasizing the similarities with the topological string/spectral theory correspondence. We first conjecture a hidden integrality structure in the holomorphic blocks and show that this structure guarantees the cancellation of potential singularities in the full non-perturbative wave function at rational values of the coupling constant. We then develop various techniques to determine the wave function at such rational points. Finally, we illustrate our conjectures and obtain explicit results in the examples of the figure-eight and the three-twist knots. In the case of the figure-eight knot, we also perform a direct evaluation of the state integral in the rational case and observe that the resulting wave function has the features of the ground state for a quantum mirror curve.

Dynamical Structure Factor of the Triangular Heisenberg Model

Abstract:We compute the zero temperature dynamical structure factor $S({\bf q},\omega)$ of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model using a Schwinger Boson approach that includes the Gaussian fluctuations ($1/N$ correction) of the saddle point solution. While the ground state of this model exhibits a well-known 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic ordering, the excitation spectrum revealed by $S({\bf q},\omega)$ has a strong quantum character that is not captured by low-order $1/S$ expansions. The low-energy magnons consist of two spinon bound states confined by gauge fluctuations of the auxiliary fields, which can produce internal structure of the magnon peaks. In addition, the high-energy continuum of spinon modes extends up to about three times the single-magnon bandwidth.
