Abstract:While the intrinsic conductivity of DNA duplex is still under controversy,DNA metallization becomes a promising way to achieve enhanced conductivity of DNA and thus is the key to its applications in nanoelectronics.This review summarizes recent methodological developments in the metallization of DNA including electrostatic adsorption,electroless deposition,DNA self-assembly and metal evaporation.Some typical applications of metallized DNA in catalysis,sensing,nanodevices and nanoelectronics were introduced.Future challenges and promises of this field are also discussed.

Abstract:The combination of biology and micro/nano fabrication technology is becoming a new trend, DNA molecules have many characteristics, such as good thermal stability, linear geometry structure and mechanical rigidity, which can be used as ideal templates for nanowire fabrication. By utilizing metallization technology, DNA can make up conductive metal nanowires and nanoclusters, which provides a possibility of constructing nano-devices by metallized DNA molecules. In this article, firstly, we introduce DNA metallization principles. Secondly, we discuss several novel DNA metallization processes, including whole DNA metallization, selective DNA metallization, ionic surface masking decreasing nonspecific DNA metallization and evaporation DNA metallization. Finally, by self-assembly and self-recognition techniques, metallized DNA can be used to build up electronic circuits and used as the metal deposition templates to construct bio-nano devices.

Abstract:In recent decades, DNA nanotechnology has grown into a highly innovative and widely established field. DNA nanostructures have extraordinary structural programmability and can accurately organize nanoscale materials, especially in guiding the synthesis of metal nanomaterials, which have unique advantages in controlling the growth morphology of metal nanomaterials. This review started with the evolution in DNA nanotechnology and the types of DNA nanostructures. Next, a DNA-based nanofabrication technology, DNA metallization, was introduced. In this section, we systematically summarized the DNA-oriented synthesis of metal nanostructures with different morphologies and structures. Furthermore, the applications of metal nanostructures constructed from DNA templates in various fields including electronics, catalysis, sensing, and bioimaging were figured out. Finally, the development prospects and challenges of metal nanostructures formed under the morphology control by DNA nanotechnology were discussed.

Abstract:The inherent specificity of DNA sequence hybridization has been extensively exploited to develop bioengineering applications. Nevertheless, the structural potential of DNA has been far less explored for creating non-canonical DNA-based reactions. Here we develop a DNA origami-enabled highly localized metallization reaction for intrinsic metallization patterning with 10-nm resolution. Both theoretical and experimental studies reveal that low-valence metal ions (Cu2+ and Ag+) strongly coordinate with DNA bases in protruding clustered DNA (pcDNA) prescribed on two-dimensional DNA origami, which results in effective attraction within flexible pcDNA strands for site-specific pcDNA condensation. We find that the metallization reactions occur selectively on prescribed sites while not on origami substrates. This strategy is generically applicable for free-style metal painting of alphabet letters, digits and geometric shapes on all-DNA substrates with near-unity efficiency. We have further fabricated single- and double-layer nanoscale printed circuit board (nano-PCB) mimics, shedding light on bio-inspired fabrication for nanoelectronic and nanophotonic applications.

Abstract:Precise control of the structure of metallic nanomaterials is critical for the advancement of nanobiotechnology. As DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) can readily modify various moieties, such as sulfhydryl, carboxyl, and amino groups, using DNA as a directing ligand to modulate the morphology of nanomaterials is a promising strategy. In this review, we focus on the use of DNA as a template to control the morphology of metallic nanoparticles and their biomedical applications, discuss the use of DNA for the metallization of gold and silver, explore the factors that influence the process, and outline its biomedical applications. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the DNA-guided growth of nanomaterials. The challenges and future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Photolithography has been the foundational fabrication paradigm in current high-performance electronics. However, due to the limitation in fabrication resolution, scaling beyond a 20-nm critical dimension for metal conductors presents a significant challenge for photolithography. Structural DNA nanotechnology emerges as a promising alternative to photolithography, allowing for the site-specific assembly of nano-materials at single-molecule resolution. Substantial progresses have been achieved in the ultra-scaled DNA-based conductors, exhibiting novel transport characteristics and small critical dimensions. This review highlights the structure-transport property relationship for various DNA-based conductors and their potential applications in quantum /semiconductor electronics, going beyond the conventional scope focusing mainly on the shape diversity of DNA-templated metals. Different material synthesis methods and their morphological impacts on the conductivities are discussed in detail, with particular emphasis on the conducting mechanisms, such as insulating, metallic conducting, quantum tunneling, and superconducting. Furthermore, the ionic gating effect of self-assembled DNA structures in electrolyte solutions is examined. This review also suggests potential solutions to address current challenges in DNA-based conductors, encouraging multi-disciplinary collaborations for the future development of this exciting area.

Abstract:DNA possesses extraordinary molecular recognition properties and remarkable structural features in the nano-level material regulation fields, which have shown enormous applications in many areas. In this review, we focus on DNA nanotechnology, including aspects ranging from modular DNA self-assembly to DNA origami, in addition to the recently reported novel assembly methods. Moreover, we summarize some applications of DNA nanotechnology, such as DNA-directed nanoparticle spatial positioning and orientation, and well-defined assembly of proteins on the DNA structure, as well as its uses, such as in the biomedical field, etc. The development and potential applications of DNA nanotechnology are also discussed.

Abstract:After the discovery of DNA during the mid-20th century, a multitude of novel methodologies have surfaced which exploit DNA for its various properties. One such recently developed application of DNA is as a template in metal nanocluster formation. In the early years of the new millennium, a group of researchers found that DNA can be adopted as a template for the binding of metal nanoparticles that ultimately form nanoclusters. Three metal nanoclusters have been studied so far, including silver, gold, and copper, which have a plethora of biological applications. This review focuses on the synthesis, mechanisms, and novel applications of DNA-templated metal nanoclusters, including the therapies that have employed them for their wide range of fluorescent properties, and the future perspectives related to their development by exploiting machine learning algorithms and molecular dynamics simulation studies.

Abstract:Nowadays, DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials have received more and more attention due to their distinctive properties of easy synthesis, high stability and good biocompatibility. As a kind of efficient template to mediate the precise synthesis of metal nanomaterials, DNA can not only increase their recognition and biocompatibility, but also precisely control their morphology, structure and further analytical performance. DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials as ultrasensitive and selective probes have unique advantages for in situ rapid analysis of targets in complex samples. Herein, we reviewed the recent progress on synthesis strategies, morphologies, specific properties of DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials including nanoparticles and nanoclusters. Moreover, the applications of DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials to environmental and biological analysis were also summarized. Finally, the developing prospect of DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials in analytical chemistry was discussed and proposed.

Abstract:High-entropy multimetallic nanopatterns with controlled morphology, composition and uniformity hold great potential for developing nanoelectronics, nanophotonics and catalysis. Nevertheless, the lack of general methods for patterning multiple metals poses a limit. Here, we develop a DNA origami-based metallization reaction system to prescribe multimetallic nanopatterns with peroxidase-like activities. We find that strong coordination between metal elements and DNA bases enables the accumulation of metal ions on protruding clustered DNA (pcDNA) that are prescribed on DNA origami. As a result of the condensation of pcDNA, these sites can serve as nucleation site for metal plating. We have synthesized multimetallic nanopatterns composed of up to five metal elements (Co, Pd, Pt, Ag and Ni), and obtained insights on elemental uniformity control at the nanoscale. This method provides an alternative pathway to construct a library of multimetallic nanopatterns.

Abstract:An intense interest has grown in the unique interactions of nucleic acids with metal ions, which lead to the formation of metal-base pairs and the generation of fluorescent nanomaterials. In this review, different types of metal-base pairs, especially those formed from naturally occurring nucleosides, are described with emphasis also being given to recent advances made in employing these complexes to govern enzymatic reactions. The review also contains a comprehensive description of DNA-templated inorganic nanomaterials such as silver nanoclusters which possess excellent fluorescence properties. Finally, a summary is given about how these materials have led to recent advances in the field of nanobiotechnology.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoarchitectures refer to the well-defined groupings of elementary metallic nanoparticle building blocks. Such nanostructures have a plethora of technical applications in diagnostics, energy-harvesting, and nanophotonic circuits, to name a few. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to construct plasmonic nanoarchitectures at will inexpensively. Bottom-up self-assembly is promising to overcome these limitations, but such methods often produce defects and low-yields. For these purposes, DNA has emerged as a powerful nanomaterial beyond its genetic function in biology to either program or template synthesis of plasmonic nanostructures, or act as a ligand to mediate large-area self-assembly. In conjunction with top-down lithography, DNA-based strategies can afford excellent control over internal and overall structures of plasmonic nanoarchitectures. In this review, we outline the representative methodologies for building various well-defined plasmonic nanoarchitectures and cover their recent exciting applications.

Abstract:DNA as an intriguing organic ligand has been widely employed for synthesizing metal nanoclusters and engineering their properties. This review aims to present recent progress on DNA-encoded metal (Ag, Cu, Au, Ag/Pt, Cu/Ag, etc.) nanoclusters (DNA-MNCs), focusing on their applications in the fields of analysis, logic operation, and therapy based on properties including fluorescence, electrochemiluminescence (ECL), and antibacterial and catalytic activity, and summarizes the attractive features of the latest research. The key points are briefly described as follows. (1) Analytical systems have been constructed based on fluorescence regulation, and nuclease-assisted and enzyme-free amplification strategies have been extensively adopted with fluorescent DNA-MNCs for amplified analysis. (2) DNA-MNCs may play more than one role (emitter, quencher, or catalyst) in ECL-based analytical systems. (3) Apart from antibacterial activity, DNA-MNCs also possess apparent catalytic capability, such as enzyme-like activity (i.e., nanozymes), which has been applied in colorimetric systems. (4) Reversibly regulating the catalytic activity of DNA-MNCs has been attained with DNA systems. It is believed that through in-depth investigation of the relationship between atomic structure and property, more novel DNA-MNCs will be explored and applied in the future.

Abstract:In the past few decades, DNA nanotechnology has been developed a lot due to their appealing features such as structural programmability and easy functionalization. In the emerging field of DNA nanotechnology, DNA molecules are regarded not only as biological information carriers but also as building blocks in the assembly of various two-dimensional and three-dimensional nanostructures, serving as outstanding templates for the bottom-up fabrication of plasmonic nanostructures. By arranging nanoparticles with different components and morphologies on the predesigned DNA templates, various static and dynamic plasmonic nanostructures with tailored optical properties have been obtained. In this review, we summarized recent advances in the design and construction of static and dynamic DNA-based plasmonic nanostructures. In addition, we addressed their emerging applications in the fields of optics and biosensors. At the end of this review, the open questions and future directions of DNA-based plasmonic nanostructure are also discussed.

Abstract:DNA nanotechnology is a unique field, where physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering, and materials science can elegantly converge. Since the original proposal of Nadrian Seeman, significant advances have been achieved in the past four decades. During this glory time, the DNA origami technique developed by Paul Rothemund further pushed the field forward with a vigorous momentum, fostering a plethora of concepts, models, methodologies, and applications that were not thought of before. This review focuses on the recent progress in DNA origami-engineered nanomaterials in the past five years, outlining the exciting achievements as well as the unexplored research avenues. We believe that the spirit and assets that Seeman left for scientists will continue to bring interdisciplinary innovations and useful applications to this field in the next decade.

Abstract:Metal ions are essential to many chemical, biological, and environmental processes. In the past two decades, many DNA-based metal sensors have emerged. While the main biological role of DNA is to store genetic information, its chemical structure is ideal for metal binding via both the phosphate backbone and nucleobases. DNA is highly stable, cost-effective, easy to modify, and amenable to combinatorial selection. Two main classes of functional DNA were developed for metal sensing: aptamers and DNAzymes. While a few metal binding aptamers are known, it is generally quite difficult to isolate such aptamers. On the other hand, DNAzymes are powerful tools for metal sensing since they are selected based on catalytic activity, thus bypassing the need for metal immobilization. In the last five years, a new surge of development has been made on isolating new metal sensing DNA sequences. To date, many important metals can be selectively detected by DNA often down to the low parts-per-billion level. Herein, each metal ion and the known DNA sequences for its sensing are reviewed. We focus on the fundamental aspect of metal binding, emphasizing the distinct chemical property of each metal. Instead of reviewing each published sensor, a high-level summary of signaling methods is made as a separate section. In principle, each signaling strategy can be applied to many DNA sequences for designing sensors. Finally, a few specific applications are highlighted, and future research opportunities are discussed.

Abstract:The exciton-plasmon interaction between fluorescent colloidal semiconductor quantum dots and plasmonic metal nanoparticles may lead to emission quenching or enhancement of quantum dots, which have potential applications in renewable energy, nanophotonics, and biosensing. Semiconductor quantum dots and metal nanoparticles hybrids with controlled geometry, distance, and stoichiometry are crucial for the potential applications. While DNA nanotechnology, based on Watson-Crick base-pairing interactions between two single-stranded DNAs, has provided unique opportunities to generate fully programmable, functional metal nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots hybrid nanomaterials, and offers precisely control over the spacing, orientation, and chirality of the components. This review provides the highlights of the recent progresses in DNA directed self-assembly of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots and metallic nanoparticles heterogeneous nanomaterials. We also discuss the challenges and the trends in DNA directed self-assembly of semiconductor quantum dots and metallic nanoparticles hybrid nanomaterials.
