Abstract:We previously presented a systematic optics-based canonical approach to test material-lighting interactions in their full natural ecology, combining canonical material and lighting modes. Analyzing the power of the spherical harmonics components of the lighting allowed us to predict the lighting effects on material perception for generic natural illumination environments. To further understand how material properties can be brought out or communicated visually, in the current study, we tested whether and how light map orientation and shape affect these interactions in a rating experiment: For combinations of four materials, three shapes, and three light maps, we rotated the light maps in 15 different configurations. For the velvety objects, there were main and interaction effects of lighting and light map orientation. The velvety ratings decreased when the main light source was coming from the back of the objects. For the specular objects, there were main and interaction effects of lighting and shape. The specular ratings increased when the environment in the specular reflections was clearly visible in the stimuli. For the glittery objects, there were main and interaction effects of shape and light map orientation. The glittery ratings correlated with the coverage of the glitter reflections as the shape and light map orientation varied. For the matte objects, results were robust across all conditions. Last, we propose combining the canonical modes approach with so-called importance maps to analyze the appearance features of the proximal stimulus, the image, in contradistinction to the physical parameters as an approach for optimization of material communication.

Abstract:Observing and recognizing materials is a fundamental part of our daily life. Under typical viewing conditions, we are capable of effortlessly identifying the objects that surround us and recognizing the materials they are made of. Nevertheless, understanding the underlying perceptual processes that take place to accurately discern the visual properties of an object is a long-standing problem. In this work, we perform a comprehensive and systematic analysis of how the interplay of geometry, illumination, and their spatial frequencies affects human performance on material recognition tasks. We carry out large-scale behavioral experiments where participants are asked to recognize different reference materials among a pool of candidate samples. In the different experiments, we carefully sample the information in the frequency domain of the stimuli. From our analysis, we find significant first-order interactions between the geometry and the illumination, of both the reference and the candidates. In addition, we observe that simple image statistics and higher-order image histograms do not correlate with human performance. Therefore, we perform a high-level comparison of highly nonlinear statistics by training a deep neural network on material recognition tasks. Our results show that such models can accurately classify materials, which suggests that they are capable of defining a meaningful representation of material appearance from labeled proximal image data. Last, we find preliminary evidence that these highly nonlinear models and humans may use similar high-level factors for material recognition tasks.

Abstract:We studied whether lighting influences the visual perception of material scattering qualities. To this aim we made an interface or "material probe", called MatMix 1.0, in which we used optical mixing of four canonical material modes. The appearance of a 3D object could be adjusted by interactively adjusting the weights of the four material components in the probe. This probe was used in a matching experiment in which we compared material perception under generic office lighting with that under three canonical lighting conditions. For the canonical materials, we selected matte, velvety, specular and glittery, representing diffuse, asperity, forward, and specular micro facet scattering modes. For the canonical lightings, we selected ambient, focus and brilliance lighting modes. In our matching experiment, observers were asked to change the appearance of the probe so that the material qualities of the probe matched that of the stimuli. From the matching results, we found that our brilliance lighting brought out the glossiness of our stimuli and our focus lighting brought out the velvetiness of our stimuli most similarly to office lighting. We conclude that the influence of lighting on material perception is material-dependent.

Abstract:Product lighting design is a laborious and time‐consuming task. With product illustrations being increasingly rendered, the lighting challenge transferred to the virtual realm. Our approach targets lighting design in the context of a scene with fixed objects, materials, and camera parameters, illuminated by environmental lighting. Our solution offers control over the depiction of material characteristics and shape details by optimizing the illuminating environment‐map. To that end, we introduce a metric that assesses the shape and material cues in terms of the designed appearance. We formalize the process and support steering the outcome using additional design constraints. We illustrate our solution with several challenging examples.

Top-Down Effects on Translucency Perception in Relation to Shape Cues

Abstract:It is well established that object shape perception significantly influences the perception of translucency. However, how object shape cues such as motion and binocular disparity affect the perception of translucency in rich environments, like virtual reality or real visual environments, remains unclear. This study aims to psychophysically measure the extent to which multiple object shape cues influence the perception of translucency. Additionally, we examined whether top-down factors, such as changes in cognitive attitude caused by the sequence of experiments, affect translucency perception. The results revealed that while motion and binocular disparity enhance translucency perception, this effect is confined to situations where shape cues are poor. Moreover, the effect became particularly pronounced when the experiments began with weak specular reflection stimuli, followed by the experiments using stimuli with specular reflection. In the case of translucent objects without specular reflection, strong shape information cannot be derived solely from shading patterns. These findings thus suggest that top-down factors related to shape modulate the influence of shape cues on translucency perception.

Abstract:The appearance of objects depends on their material, shape, and on the illumination conditions. Conversely, object appearance provides us with cues about the illumination and the material. This so-called inverse problem is basically underdetermined and therefore we expect that material and illumination perception are confounded. To gain insight into the relevant mechanisms, we rendered a set of artificial spheres for vastly different canonical light fields and reflectance functions. We used four physics-based bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) representing glossy, pitted, velvety, and matte material. The six illumination conditions were collimated illumination from four directions, hemispherical diffuse illumination, and fully diffuse (Ganzfeld) illumination. In three sub-experiments we presented pairs of stimuli and asked human observers to judge whether the material was the same, whether the illumination was the same, and for a subset in which either the illumination or the material was the same to judge which of the two was constant. We found that observers made many errors in all sub-experiments. In experiment 2 the illumination direction was chosen at random. Using an interactive interface, we asked human observers to match the illumination direction of a sphere of one of the four materials with that of a Lambertian sphere. We found systematical material-dependent deviations from veridical performance. Theoretical analysis of the radiance patterns suggests that judgments were based mainly on the position of the shadow edge. In conclusion, we found no evidence for 'material constancy' for perception of smooth rendered spheres despite vast quantitative and qualitative differences in illumination and in BRDF between the stimuli. Although human observers demonstrated some 'illumination constancy', they made systematic errors depending on the material reflectance, suggesting that they used mainly the location of the shadow edge. Our results suggest that material perception and light-field perception are basically confounded.
Shape It Up: An Empirically Grounded Approach for Designing Shape Palettes

Abstract:Shape is commonly used to distinguish between categories in multi-class scatterplots. However, existing guidelines for choosing effective shape palettes rely largely on intuition and do not consider how these needs may change as the number of categories increases. Although shapes can be a finite number compared to colors, they can not be represented by a numerical space, making it difficult to propose a general guideline for shape choices or shed light on the design heuristics of designer-crafted shape palettes. This paper presents a series of four experiments evaluating the efficiency of 39 shapes across three tasks -- relative mean judgment tasks, expert choices, and data correlation estimation. Given how complex and tangled results are, rather than relying on conventional features for modeling, we built a model and introduced a corresponding design tool that offers recommendations for shape encodings. The perceptual effectiveness of shapes significantly varies across specific pairs, and certain shapes may enhance perceptual efficiency and accuracy. However, how performance varies does not map well to classical features of shape such as angles, fill, or convex hull. We developed a model based on pairwise relations between shapes measured in our experiments and the number of shapes required to intelligently recommend shape palettes for a given design. This tool provides designers with agency over shape selection while incorporating empirical elements of perceptual performance captured in our study. Our model advances the understanding of shape perception in visualization contexts and provides practical design guidelines for advanced shape usage in visualization design that optimize perceptual efficiency.

Abstract:Lighting design is a complex, but fundamental, problem in many fields. In volume visualization, direct volume rendering generates an informative image without external lighting, as each voxel itself emits radiance. However, external lighting further improves the shape and detail perception of features, and it also determines the effectiveness of the communication of feature information. The human visual system is highly effective in extracting structural information from images, and to assist it further, this paper presents an approach to structure-aware automatic lighting design by measuring the structural changes between the images with and without external lighting. Given a transfer function and a viewpoint, the optimal lighting parameters are those that provide the greatest enhancement to structural information - the shape and detail information of features are conveyed most clearly by the optimal lighting parameters. Besides lighting goodness, the proposed metric can also be used to evaluate lighting similarity and stability between two sets of lighting parameters. Lighting similarity can be used to optimize the selection of multiple light sources so that different light sources can reveal distinct structural information. Our experiments with several volume data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the structure-aware lighting design approach. It is well suited to use by novices as it requires little technical understanding of the rendering parameters associated with direct volume rendering.

Abstract:The effective design of visual computing systems depends heavily on the anticipation of visual attention, or saliency. While visual attention is well investigated for conventional 2D images and video, it is nevertheless a very active research area for emerging immersive media. In particular, visual attention of light fields (light rays of a scene captured by a grid of cameras or micro lenses) has only recently become a focus of research. As they may be rendered and consumed in various ways, a primary challenge that arises is the definition of what visual perception of light field content should be. In this work, we present a visual attention study on light field content. We conducted perception experiments displaying them to users in various ways and collected corresponding visual attention data. Our analysis highlights characteristics of user behaviour in light field imaging applications. The light field data set and attention data are provided with this paper.

Abstract:Photographers and lighting designers set up lighting environments that best depict objects and human figures to convey key aspects of the visual appearance of various materials, following rules drawn from experience. Understanding which lighting environment is best adapted to convey which key aspects of materials is an important question in the field of human vision. The endless range of natural materials and lighting environments poses a major problem in this respect. Here we present a systematic approach to make this problem tractable for lighting-material interactions, using optics-based models composed of canonical lighting and material modes. In two psychophysical experiments, different groups of inexperienced observers judged the material qualities of the objects depicted in the stimulus images. In the first experiment, we took photographs of real objects as stimuli under canonical lightings. In a second experiment, we selected three generic natural lighting environments on the basis of their predicted lighting effects and made computer renderings of the objects. The selected natural lighting environments have characteristics similar to the canonical lightings, as computed using a spherical harmonic analysis. Results from the two experiments correlate strongly, showing (a) how canonical material and lighting modes associate with perceived material qualities; and (b) which lighting is best adapted to evoke perceived material qualities, such as softness, smoothness, and glossiness. Our results demonstrate that a system of canonical modes spanning the natural range of lighting and materials provides a good basis to study lighting-material interactions in their full natural ecology.
Perceptual biases in the interpretation of 3D shape from shading

Abstract:Two experiments are reported in which observers judged the sign and magnitude of surface curvature from shaded images of an indoor scene. The depicted surfaces were illuminated by an area light in the ceiling or floor, and the illumination was attenuated with distance in a physically correct manner. The displays were presented both with and without cast shadows, specular highlights and surface inter-reflections in all possible combinations. The overall pattern of results revealed a strong perceptual bias to interpret the images as convex rather than concave, and a weaker bias to prefer illumination from above rather than from below, though there were large individual differences in the relative strengths of these biases. For displays that did not contain cast shadows or specular highlights, the accuracy of observers' judgments about the sign of surface curvature was no greater than chance, but performance was significantly improved when those aspects of normal shading were included in the rendering model. An analysis of the apparent depth magnitudes revealed that convex surfaces produce much greater perceived depth than concave surfaces with comparable relief.
The role of color in the perception of three-dimensional shape

Abstract:The human visual system can derive information about three-dimensional (3D) shape from the structure of light reflected by surfaces. Most research on single static images has focused on the 3D shape information contained in variations of brightness caused by interactions between the illumination and local surface orientation ("shading").1-6 Although color can enhance the recovery of surface shading when color and brightness vary independently,7-9 there is no evidence that color alone provides any information about 3D shape. Here, we show that the wavelength-dependent reflectance of chromatic materials provides information about the 3D shape of translucent materials. We show that different wavelengths of light undergo varying degrees of subsurface light transport, which generates multiple forms of spatial structure: wavelengths that are weakly reflected generate shading-like image structure, linked to 3D surface orientation, whereas wavelengths that penetrate more deeply into the material are primarily constrained by the direction of surface curvature (convexities and concavities).10 Psychophysical experiments demonstrate that the enhanced perception of 3D shape in chromatic translucent surfaces arises from the shading structure generated by weakly reflected wavelengths, which, in turn, generates correlated spatial variations in saturation. These results demonstrate a new functional role for color in the perception of the 3D shape of translucent materials.
Softness and weight from shape: Material properties inferred from local shape features

Abstract:Object shape is an important cue to material identity and for the estimation of material properties. Shape features can affect material perception at different levels: at a microscale (surface roughness), mesoscale (textures and local object shape), or megascale (global object shape) level. Examples for local shape features include ripples in drapery, clots in viscous liquids, or spiraling creases in twisted objects. Here, we set out to test the role of such shape features on judgments of material properties softness and weight. For this, we created a large number of novel stimuli with varying surface shape features. We show that those features have distinct effects on softness and weight ratings depending on their type, as well as amplitude and frequency, for example, increasing numbers and pointedness of spikes makes objects appear harder and heavier. By also asking participants to name familiar objects, materials, and transformations they associate with our stimuli, we can show that softness and weight judgments do not merely follow from semantic associations between particular stimuli and real-world object shapes. Rather, softness and weight are estimated from surface shape, presumably based on learned heuristics about the relationship between a particular expression of surface features and material properties. In line with this, we show that correlations between perceived softness or weight and surface curvature vary depending on the type of surface feature. We conclude that local shape features have to be considered when testing the effects of shape on the perception of material properties such as softness and weight.

Abstract:Faithful manipulation of shape, material, and illumination in 2D Internet images would greatly benefit from a reliable factorization of appearance into material (i.e., diffuse and specular) and illumination (i.e., environment maps). In this work, we propose to make use of a set of photographs in order to jointly estimate the non-diffuse materials and sharp lighting in an uncontrolled setting. Our key observation is that seeing multiple instances of the same material under different illumination (i.e., environment), and different materials under the same illumination provide valuable constraints that can be exploited to yield a high-quality solution (i.e., specular materials and environment illumination) for all the observed materials and environments. Technically, we enable this by a novel scalable formulation using parametric mixture models that allows for simultaneous estimation of all materials and illumination directly from a set of (uncontrolled) Internet images. At the core is an optimization that uses two neural networks trained on synthetic images to predict good gradients in parametric space given observation of reflected light. We evaluate our method on a range of synthetic and real examples to generate high-quality estimates, qualitatively compare our results against state-of-the-art alternatives via a user study. Surface properties and the perception of color

Abstract:We examined whether perception of color saturation and lightness depends on the three-dimensional (3D) shape and surface gloss of surfaces rendered to have different hues. In Experiment 1, we parametrically varied specular roughness of predominantly planar surfaces with different mesoscopic relief heights. The orientation of surfaces was varied relative to the light source and observer. Observers matched perceived lightness and chroma (effectively saturation) using spherical objects rendered using CIE LCH color space. We observed strong interactions between perceived saturation and lightness with changes in surface orientation and surface properties (specular roughness and 3D relief height). Declines in saturation and increases in lightness were observed with increasing specular roughness. Changes in relief height had greater effects on perceived saturation and lightness for blue hues compared with reddish and greenish hues. Experiment 2 found inverse correlations between perceived gloss and specular roughness across conditions. Experiment 3 estimated perceived specular coverage and found that a weighted combination of perceived gloss and specular coverage could account for perceived color saturation and lightness, with different coefficients accounting for the perceptual experience for each of the three hue conditions. These findings suggest that perceived color saturation and lightness depend on the separation of specular highlights from diffuse shading informative of chromatic surface reflectance.
Asymmetric perceptual confounds between canonical lightings and materials.

Abstract:To better understand the interactions between material perception and light perception, we further developed our material probe MatMix 1.0 into MixIM 1.0, which allows optical mixing of canonical lighting modes. We selected three canonical lighting modes (ambient, focus, and brilliance) and created scenes to represent the three illuminations. Together with four canonical material modes (matte, velvety, specular, glittery), this resulted in 12 basis images (the "bird set"). These images were optically mixed in our probing method. Three experiments were conducted with different groups of observers. In Experiment 1, observers were instructed to manipulate MixIM 1.0 and match optically mixed lighting modes while discounting the materials. in Experiment 2, observers were shown a pair of stimuli and instructed to simultaneously judge whether the materials and lightings were the same or different in a four-category discrimination task. In Experiment 3, observers performed both the matching and discrimination tasks in which only the ambient and focus light were implemented. Overall, the matching and discrimination results were comparable as (a) robust asymmetric perceptual confounds were found and confirmed in both types of tasks, (b) performances were consistent and all above chance levels, and (c) observers had higher sensitivities to our canonical materials than to our canonical lightings. The latter result may be explained in terms of a generic insensitivity for naturally occurring variations in light conditions. Our findings suggest that midlevel image features are more robust across different materials than across different lightings and, thus, more diagnostic for materials than for lightings, causing the asymmetric perceptual confounds.
Perceptual and emotional effects of light and color in a simulated retail space

Abstract:This article aims to address two aspects of lighting often treated intuitively by designers in charge of creating retail atmospheres, that is, the impact of color and light distribution, as design variables. The study comprised a controlled experiment with a repeated measure design with three directions of lighting (front, overhead, and wallwasher), as the within-subject factor and four color combinations of the walls (yellow-blue, magenta, gray, and green-magenta), as the between-group variable. The perceptual (visually) and emotional responses of 184 participants revealed the interplay between light and color on these psychological outcomes. Specifically, the results showed that the overhead direction of lighting improves the appearance of the less favored color conditions, either in terms of lack of visual complexity (monochromatic) or color itself (gray). In turn, the wallwasher lighting emphasized these attributes, differing according to visual or emotional aspects. In retailing, emotional dimensions such as activation and evaluation are desired, and they were confirmed across all the lighting and color conditions of this study. The results provide designers with certain perceptual cues regarding colors and their lighting mode to create desirable impressions and affect in retail spaces.

Looking into Special Surface Effects: Diffuse Coarseness and Glint Impression

Abstract:Diffuse coarseness (graininess) and glint impression (sparkle) are two aspects of visual perception for special-effect materials, including car finishes, etc. Previous work has shown that these two attributes become apparent when illuminated under two distinct illumination conditions: diffuse and unidirectional illumination respectively. The effect of glint impression has significant dependency on the viewing geometry. In this work, three psychophysical experiments were carried out, including diffuse coarseness assessment, glint impression assessment, and finding dimensions of glint space. In the experiments, one geometry for diffuse coarseness and three geometries for glint impression were designed. The three viewing geometries were designed according to a commercial device, BYK-mac, so that the results were used to test the reliability of instrumental measurements. Based on the conclusions drawn from the psychophysical experiments, a further investigation on glint space was conducted using the multidimensional scaling technique. From the visual results, two dimensions, corresponding to two attributes, were extracted and were validated by the instrumental results. Bidirectional reflectance distribution function data were also adopted from another commercial device, Imaging Sphere from Radiant Vision Systems Inc., USA (originally RadiantZemax Inc.), to predict glint impression. Some promising results were obtained.
