Abstract:We give elementary constructions of factors of nonsingular Bernoulli shifts. In particular, we show that all nonsingular Bernoulli shifts on a finite number of symbols which satisfy the Doeblin condition have a factor that is equivalent to an independent and identically distributed system. We also prove that there are type-III:1 Bernoulli shifts of every possible ergodic index, answering a question of Danilenko and Lemanczyk (Ergodic Theory Dynam. Systems, 39(12):3292-3321, 2019).

Equilibrium measures for two-sided shift spaces via dimension theory

Abstract:Given a two-sided shift space on a finite alphabet and a continuous potential function, we give conditions under which an equilibrium measure can be described using a construction analogous to Hausdorff measure that goes back to the work of Bowen. This construction was previously applied to smooth uniformly and partially hyperbolic systems by the first author, Pesin, and Zelerowicz. Our results here apply to all subshifts of finite type and Hölder continuous potentials, but extend beyond this setting, and we also apply them to shift spaces with synchronizing words.

Abstract:We consider skew products over subshifts of finite type in which the fibers are copies of the real line, and we study their mixing properties with respect to any infinite invariant measure given by the product of a Gibbs measure on the base and Lebesgue measure on the fibers. Assuming that the system is accessible, we prove a quantitative version of Krickeberg mixing for a class of observables which is dense in the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity.

Abstract:The class of substitutions of some primitive components is introduced. A bilateral subshift arising from a substitution of some primitive components is decomposed into pairwise disjoint, locally compact, shift-invariant sets, on each of which an invariant Radon measure is unique up to scaling. It is completely characterized in terms of eigenvalues of an incidence matrix when the unique invariant measure is finite.

Abstract:Every non-erasing monoid morphism $\sigma: {\cal A}^* \to {\cal B}^*$ induces a measure transfer map $\sigma_X^{\cal M}: {\cal M}(X) \to {\cal M}(\sigma(X))$ between the measure cones ${\cal M}(X)$ and ${\cal M}(\sigma(X))$, associated to any subshift $X \subseteq {\cal A}^\mathbb Z$ and its image subshift $\sigma(X) \subseteq {\cal B}^\mathbb Z$ respectively. We define and study this map in detail and show that it is continuous, linear and functorial. It also turns out to be surjective. Furthermore, an efficient technique to compute the value of the transferred measure $\sigma_X^{\cal M}(\mu)$ on any cylinder $[w]$ (for $w \in {\cal B}^\mathbb Z$) is presented.

Strong ergodicity phenomena for Bernoulli shifts of bounded algebraic dimension

Abstract:The algebraic dimension of a Polish permutation group $Q\leq \mathrm{Sym}(\mathbb{N})$ is the smallest $n\in\omega$, so that for all $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ of size $n+1$, the orbit of every $a\in A$ under the pointwise stabilizer of $A\setminus\{a\}$ is finite. We study the Bernoulli shift $P\curvearrowright \mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$ for various Polish permutation groups $P$ and we provide criteria under which the $P$-shift is generically ergodic relative to the injective part of the $Q$-shift, when $Q$ has algebraic dimension $\leq n$. We use this to show that the sequence of pairwise $*$-reduction-incomparable equivalence relations defined in [KP21] is a strictly increasing sequence in the Borel reduction hierarchy. We also use our main theorem to exhibit an equivalence relation of pinned cardinal $\aleph_1^{+}$ which strongly resembles the equivalence relation of pinned cardinal $\aleph_1^{+}$ from [Zap11], but which does not Borel reduce to the latter. It remains open whether they are actually incomparable under Borel reductions. Our proofs rely on the study of symmetric models whose symmetries come from the group $Q$. We show that when $Q$ is "locally finite" -- e.g. when $Q=\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{M})$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is a locally finite countable structure with no algebraicity -- the corresponding symmetric model admits a theory of supports which is analogous to that in the basic Cohen model.

Anisotropic spaces for the bilateral shift

Abstract:Given two Hölder potentials $\phi_+$ and $\psi_-$ for the unilateral shift, we define anisotropic Banach spaces of distributions on the bilateral shift space with a finite alphabet. On these spaces, the transfer operator for the bilateral shift is quasicompact with a spectral gap, and the unique Gibbs state associated with $\phi_+$ spans its $1$-eigenspace. This result allows us to establish exponential decay of correlations for Hölder observables and a wide range of measures on the bilateral shift space.

Abstract:I show that an analog of the crossed product construction that takes type III 1 algebras to type II algebras exists also in the type I case. This is particularly natural when the local algebra is a non-trivial direct sum of type I factors. Concretely, I rewrite the usual type I trace in a different way and renormalise it. This new renormalised trace stays well-defined even when each factor is taken to be type III. I am able to recover both type II ∞ as well as type II 1 algebras by imposing different constraints on the central operator in the code. An example of this structure appears in holographic quantum error-correcting codes; the central operator is then the area operator.

Strong Approximations of Shifts and the Characteristic Measures Problem

Abstract:Every symbolic system supports a Borel measure that is invariant under the shift, but it is not known if every such systems supports a measure that is invariant under all of its automorphisms; known as a characteristic measure. We give sufficient conditions to find a characteristic measure, additionally showing when it can be taken to be a measure of maximal entropy. The class of systems to which these sufficient conditions apply is large, containing a dense $G_{\delta}$ set in the space of all shifts on a given alphabet, and is also large in the sense that it is closed under taking factors. We also investigate natural systems to which these sufficient conditions apply.

Abstract:We consider two-variable model spaces associated to rational inner functions $\Theta$ on the bidisk, which always possess canonical $z_2$-invariant subspaces $\mathcal{S}_2.$ A particularly interesting compression of the shift is the compression of multiplication by $z_1$ to $\mathcal{S}_2$, namely $ S^1_{\Theta}:= P_{\mathcal{S}_2} M_{z_1} |_{\mathcal{S}_2}$. We show that these compressed shifts are unitarily equivalent to matrix-valued Toeplitz operators with well-behaved symbols and characterize their numerical ranges and radii. We later specialize to particularly simple rational inner functions and study the geometry of the associated numerical ranges, find formulas for the boundaries, answer the zero inclusion question, and determine whether the numerical ranges are ever circular.

Abstract:We show that the Bernoulli shift and the trivial action of a finite group $G$ on a UHF-algebra of infinite type are $KK^G$-equivalent and that the Bernoulli shift absorbs the trivial action up to conjugacy. As an application, we compute the $K$-theory of crossed products by approximately inner flips on classifiable $C^*$-algebras.

Generic dimensional and dynamical properties of invariant measures of full-shift systems over countable alphabets

Abstract:In this work, we are interested in characterizing typical (generic) dimensional properties of invariant measures associated with the full-shift system, $T$, in a product space whose alphabet is a countable set. More specifically, we show that the set of invariant measures with infinite packing dimension equal to infinity is a dense $G_\delta$ subset of $\mathcal{M}(T)$, the space of $T$-invariant measures endowed with the weak topology, where the alphabet $M$ is a countable Polish metric space. We also show that the set of invariant measures with upper $q$-generalized fractal dimension (with $q>1$) equal to infinity is a dense $G_\delta$ subset of $\mathcal{M}(T)$, where the alphabet $M$ is a countable compact metric space. This improves the results obtained by Carvalho and Condori in \cite{AS} and \cite{AS2}, respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the dynamical consequences of such results, regarding the upper recurrence rates and upper quantitative waiting time indicator for typical orbits, and how the fractal dimensions of invariant measures and such dynamical quantities behave under an $\alpha$-Hölder conjugation.

On Dirichlet-type and $n$-isometric shifts in finite rank de~Branges--Rovnyak spaces

Abstract:This paper studies the function spaces $\mathcal{D}(\mu)$ by Richter and Aleman, and $\mathcal{D}_{\vec{\mu}}$ by the second author. It is known that the forward shift $M_z$ is bounded and expansive on $\mathcal{D}(\mu)$, and therefore $\mathcal{D}(\mu)$ coincides with a de~Branges--Rovnyak space $\mathcal{H}[B]$. We show that such a $B$ is rational if and only if $\mu$ is finitely atomic, and this happens exactly when the corresponding defect operator has finite rank. We also outline a method for calculating the reproducing kernel of $\mathcal{D}(\mu)$ for finitely atomic $\mu$. Similarly, we characterize the allowable tuples $\vec{\mu} = (\frac{|dz|}{2\pi}, \mu_1, \ldots, \mu_{n-1})$ such that $M_z$ on $\mathcal{D}_{\vec{\mu}}$ is expansive with finite rank defect operator. This investigation provides many interesting examples of normalized allowable tuples $\vec{\mu}$.

Abstract:Q-exchangeable ergodic distributions on the infinite symmetric group were classified by Gnedin-Olshanski (2012). In this paper, we study a specific linear combination of the ergodic measures and call it the Mallows product measure. From a particle system perspective, the Mallows product measure is a reversible stationary blocking measure of the infinite-species ASEP and it is a natural multi-species extension of the Bernoulli product blocking measures of the one-species ASEP. Moreover, the Mallows product measure can be viewed as the universal product blocking measure of interacting particle systems coming from random walks on Hecke algebras. For the random infinite permutation distributed according to the Mallows product measure we have computed the joint distribution of its neighboring displacements, as well as several other observables. The key feature of the obtained formulas is their remarkably simple product structure. We project these formulas to ASEP with finitely many species, which in particular recovers a recent result of Adams-Balazs-Jay, and also to ASEP(q,M). Our main tools are results of Gnedin-Olshanski about ergodic Mallows measures and shift-invariance symmetries of the stochastic colored six vertex model discovered by Borodin-Gorin-Wheeler and Galashin.

Abstract:A new construction of product measures is given for an arbitrary sequence of measure spaces via outer measure techniques giving a coherent extension of the classical theory of finite product measures to countable many. Moreover, the Lebesgue spaces of this measures are simplified in terms of finite product measures. This decomposition simplifies all the considerations regarding infinite dimensional integration and gives to it a computational framework.

Abstract:We study a general class of weighted shifts whose weights $\alpha$ are given by $\alpha_n = \sqrt{\frac{p^n + N}{p^n + D}}$, where $p > 1$ and $N$ and $D$ are parameters so that $(N,D) \in (-1, 1)\times (-1, 1)$. Some few examples of these shifts have appeared previously, usually as examples in connection with some property related to subnormality. In sectors nicely arranged in the unit square in $(N,D)$, we prove that these geometrically regular weighted shifts exhibit a wide variety of properties: moment infinitely divisible, subnormal, $k$- but not $(k+1)$-hyponormal, or completely hyperexpansive, and with a variety of well-known functions (such as Bernstein functions) interpolating their weights squared or their moment sequences. They provide subshifts of the Bergman shift with geometric, not linear, spacing in the weights which are moment infinitely divisible. This new family of weighted shifts provides a useful addition to the library of shifts with which to explore new definitions and properties.
