Abstract:In this paper, we first obtain a Bernstein type of concentration inequality for stochastic integrals of multivariate point processes under some conditions through the Doléans-Dade exponential formula, and then derive a uniform exponential inequality using a generic chaining argument. As a direct consequence, we obtain an upper bound for a sequence of discrete time martingales indexed by a class of functionals. Finally, we apply the uniform exponential bound to nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators and provide a rate of convergence in terms of Hellinger distance, which is an improvement of earlier work of van de Geer (1995).

Abstract:We consider Bernstein's inequality for the Riesz derivative of order of entire functions of exponential type in the uniform norm on the real line. For this operator, the corresponding interpolation formula is obtained; this formula has nonequidistant nodes. Using this formula, the sharp Bernstein inequality is obtained for all ; namely, the extremal entire function and the sharp constant are written out.

Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.

Abstract:Bernstein's classical inequality asserts that given a trigonometric polynomial $T$ of degree $n\geq1$, the sup-norm of the derivative of $T$ does not exceed $n$ times the sup-norm of $T$. We present various approaches to prove this inequality and some of its natural extensions/variants, especially when it comes to replacing the sup-norm with the $L^p-norm$.

Abstract:Let $(\Omega,\mathscr F,\mathbb P) $ be a probability space and let $(\mathscr F_n)$ be a binary filtration, i.e. exactly one atom of $\mathscr F_{n-1}$ is divided into two atoms of $\mathscr F_n$ without any restriction on their respective measures. Additionally, denote the collection of atoms corresponding to this filtration by $\mathscr A$. Let $S \subset L^\infty(\Omega)$ be a finite-dimensional linear subspace, having an additional stability property on atoms $\mathscr A$. For these data, we consider the two dictionaries $\mathscr C = \{ f \cdot \chi_A: f \in S, A \in \mathscr A\}$ and $\Phi$, a local orthonormal system generated by $S$ and the filtration $(\mathscr F_n)$. We are interested in approximation spaces corresponding to the best $n$-term approximation in $L^p$ for $1<p<\infty$ by elements of $\mathscr C$ and $\Phi$, respectively. It is known that in the classical Haar case, i.e. when $S = {\rm span} (\chi_{[0,1]})$ and the binary filtration $(\mathscr F_n)$ is dyadic (that is, an atom $A \in \mathscr A$ is divided into two new atoms of equal measure), those approximation spaces coincide, cf. [P. Petrushev, Multivariate $n$-term rational and piecewise polynomial approximation, J. Approx. Theory 121(1), 2003]. This motivates us to ask the question whether this is true in the general setting described above. The answer to this question is governed by the validity of a specific Bernstein type inequality. The main result of this paper is a geometric characterization of this type of Bernstein inequality, i.e. a characterization in terms of the behaviour of functions from the space $S$ on atoms $\mathscr A$ and rings $\mathscr R = \{ A \setminus B: A, B \in \mathscr A, B \subset A \}\setminus \mathscr A$. We specialize this general result to some examples of interest, including general Haar systems and spaces $S$ consisting of (multivariate) polynomials.

Abstract:Borwein and Erdu0027elyi proved a Bernstein type inequality for rational functions on the unit circle and on the real line. Here we establish asymptotically sharp extensions of their inequalities for rational functions on analytic Jordan arcs and curves. In the proofs key roles are played by Borwein-Erdu0027elyi inequality on the unit circle, Gonchar-Grigorjan type estimate of the norm of holomorphic part of meromorphic functions and Totiku0027s construction of fast decreasing polynomials.

The first type consists of inequalities in norm for the Jacobi weight, some of which are sharp, and they are established via the spectral operator that has orthogonal polynomials as eigenfunctions. Abstract:We prove new Bernstein and Markov type inequalities in $L^p$ spaces associated with the normal and the tangential derivatives on the boundary of a general compact $C^\alpha$-domain with $1\leq \alpha\leq 2$. These estimates are also applied to establish Marcinkiewicz type inequalities for discretization of $L^p$ norms of algebraic polynomials on $C^\alpha$-domains with asymptotically optimal number of function samples used.

Abstract:We establish a new Bernstein-type deviation inequality for general discrete-time Markov chains via an elementary approach. More robust than existing works in the literature, our result only requires the Markov chain to satisfy an iterated Poincaré inequality. Abstract:Let $P(z)$ be a polynomial of degree $n,$ then it is known that for $\alpha\in\mathbb{C}$ with $|\alpha|\leq \frac{n}{2},$ \begin{align*} \underset{|z|=1}{\max}|\left|zP^{\prime}(z)-\alpha P(z)\right|\leq \left|n-\alpha\right|\underset{|z|=1}{\max}|P(z)|. \end{align*} This inequality includes Bernstein's inequality, concerning the estimate for $|P^\prime(z)|$ over $|z|\leq 1,$ as a special case. In this paper, we extend this inequality to $L_p$ norm which among other things shows that the condition on $\alpha$ can be relaxed. We also prove similar inequalities for polynomials with restricted zeros.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain a Bernstein type inequality for a class of weakly dependent and bounded random variables. The proofs lead to a moderate deviations principle for sums of bounded random variables with exponential decay of the strong mixing coeficients that complements the large deviation result obtained by Bryc and Dembo (1998) under superexponential mixing rates.

Abstract:Existing concentration bounds for bounded vector-valued random variables include extensions of the scalar Hoeffding and Bernstein inequalities. While the latter is typically tighter, it requires knowing a bound on the variance of the random variables. We derive a new vector-valued empirical Bernstein inequality, which makes use of an empirical estimator of the variance instead of the true variance. The bound holds in 2-smooth separable Banach spaces, which include finite dimensional Euclidean spaces and separable Hilbert spaces. The resulting confidence sets are instantiated for both the batch setting (where the sample size is fixed) and the sequential setting (where the sample size is a stopping time). The confidence set width asymptotically exactly matches that achieved by Bernstein in the leading term. The method and supermartingale proof technique combine several tools of Pinelis (1994) and Waudby-Smith and Ramdas (2024).

Abstract:Using the method of transportation-information inequality introduced in \cite{GLWY}, we establish Bernstein type's concentration inequalities for empirical means $\frac 1t \int_0^t g(X_s)ds$ where $g$ is a unbounded observable of the symmetric Markov process $(X_t)$. Three approaches are proposed : functional inequalities approach ; Lyapunov function method ; and an approach through the Lipschitzian norm of the solution to the Poisson equation. Several applications and examples are studied.

Abstract:This paper has the characteristics of a review paper in which results of shift-invariant subspaces of Sobolev type are summarized without proofs. The structure of shift-invariant spaces $V_s$, $s\in\mathbb{R}$, generated by at most countable family of generators, which are subspaces of Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{R}^n)$, are announced in \cite{aap} and Bessel sequences, frames and Riesz families of such spaces are characterized. With the Fourier multiplier $\left(1-\frac{\Delta}{4\pi^2}\right)^{s/2}f=\mathcal{F}^{-1}\big((1+|t|^2)^{s/2}\widehat{f}(t)\big)$, we are able to extend notions and theorems in \cite{MB} to spaces of the Sobolev type.

Abstract:Asymptotically sharp Bernstein- and Markov-type inequalities are established for rational functions on C^2 smooth Jordan curves and arcs. The results are formulated in terms of the normal derivatives of certain Green's functions with poles at the poles of the rational functions in question. As a special case (when all the poles are at infinity) the corresponding results for polynomials are recaptured.
