Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have attracted considerable interest for their unique electronic properties. They are fascinating candidates for fundamental studies of one dimensional materials as well as for future molecular electronics applications. The molecular orbitals of nanotubes are of particular importance as they govern the transport properties and the chemical reactivity of the system. Here we show for the first time a complete experimental investigation of molecular orbitals of single wall carbon nanotubes using atomically resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Local conductance measurements show spectacular carbon-carbon bond asymmetry at the Van Hove singularities for both semiconducting and metallic tubes, demonstrating the symmetry breaking of molecular orbitals in nanotubes. Whatever the tube, only two types of complementary orbitals are alternatively observed. An analytical tight-binding model describing the interference patterns of ? orbitals confirmed by ab initio calculations, perfectly reproduces the experimental results.

Abstract:A beam-scanning confocal Raman microscope system capable of large-area imaging is developed for characterizing single-wall carbon nanotubes at the single tube level. Individual ultralong nanotubes grown on a large silicon substrate are systematically imaged by both confocal Raman microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Raman spectra for more than 200 nanotubes, consisting of both semiconducting and metallic nanotubes, are obtained. A large variation in the nanotube radial breathing mode (RBM) Raman intensity is observed for different tubes and can be understood in terms of resonance enhancement and nanotube structure-dependent electron-phonon coupling strength. Nanotube diameters determined from RBM frequencies reveal a broad distribution from 0.8 to -2 nm for nanotubes grown by chemical vapor deposition. The tangential mode (G band) Raman spectra of individual metallic nanotubes are found to exhibit a variety of different line shapes, with the Breit-Wigner-Fano feature diminished for most of the observed spectra.

Abstract:We present near-field Raman spectroscopy and imaging of single isolated single-walled carbon nanotubes with a spatial resolution of approximately 25 nm. The near-field origin of the image contrast is confirmed by the measured dependence of the Raman scattering signal on tip-sample distance and the unique polarization properties. The method is used to study local variations in the Raman spectrum along a single single-walled carbon nanotube.

Abstract:Two paramount challenges in carbon nanotube research are achieving chirality-controlled synthesis and understanding chirality-dependent device physics. High-throughput and in-situ chirality and electronic structural characterization of individual carbon nanotubes is crucial for addressing these challenges. Optical imaging and spectroscopy has unparalleled throughput and specificity, but its realization for single nanotubes on substrates or in devices has long been an outstanding challenge. Here we demonstrate video-rate imaging and in-situ spectroscopy of individual carbon nanotubes on various substrates and in functional devices using a novel high-contrast polarization-based optical microscopy. Our technique enables the complete chirality profiling of hundreds of as-grown carbon nanotubes. In addition, we in-situ monitor nanotube electronic structure in active field-effect devices, and observe that high-order nanotube optical resonances are dramatically broadened by electrostatic doping. This unexpected behaviour points to strong interband electron-electron scattering processes that can dominate ultrafast dynamics of excited states in carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy was used to chemically image RuO(2) nano-layer coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (RuO(2)/MWCNT) with a spatial resolution of 30 nm. X-Ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy of individual RuO(2)/MWCNTs has been compared with that of MWCNTs and RuO(2) which confirms that RuO(2) interacts with MWCNTs through charge redistribution.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes represent one of the most unique one-dimensional material in the field of nanotechnology. Because of their unique one-dimensionality combined with structure-related electronic and optical properties, single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit rich physics and attractive applications. Through the overview of the typical spectroscopy such as absorption/Rayleigh scattering, photoluminescence spectroscopy and resonance Raman spectroscopy, we summarize recent efforts in probing and modulating excitonic features of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes. Finally, we will also discuss the recent advances in the study of single-walled carbon nanotubes for future application in photonics.

Abstract:The first and second-order Raman spectra were measured for single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Eighteen first-order Raman spectral lines and seven second-order Raman spectral lines were observed. Spectral lines predicted by theory were almost fully detected. Positions of the spectral lines observed are well coincident with theoretical values. The number of Raman active phonon modes and the second-order Raman spectral lines for high-purity SWNTs observed is the biggest up to date.

After introducing the relevant basic aspects of Raman spectroscopy of graphene-related materials, we will discuss how to use the Raman spectral features for practical purposes of controlling and characterizing nanotube properties relevant for applied materials and devices. Advanced techniques with potential to enhance the relevance of Raman spectroscopy application in the carbon nanotube field are also presented.

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy is now an extremely important technique for the analysis of carbon-based materials. It is demonstrated how it can be used to give a unique insight into characterising many aspects of the microstructure of these materials, including orientation, number of layers, defects and doping, enabling standardisation and quality control. Graphene, as the building block of all sp 2 carbon materials is used as the main example and it is demonstrated how the understanding of this material has facilitated the analysis of carbon nanotubes and fibres. It is also shown that the Raman bands shift during deformation and that these shifts are related through a universal calibration. It is demonstrated how these stress-induced Raman band shifts can be used to follow the deformation of the carbon-based materials and that this can be employed for the study of the interfacial micromechanics in model composite specimens. Finally the application of Raman spectroscopy to the characterisation of the structure and physical properties, both mechanical and thermal, of bulk carbon-based composites is described in detail. The application of Raman spectroscopy to the study of a broader range of materials and the potential for instrumental innovations to enable further extension of the technique are discussed briefly.

Abstract:We present a comparative analysis of the vibrational and structural properties of carbon nanotubes. The first-order Raman spectrum exhibits two lines at 1582 cm-1 and at 1350 cm-1. The observed ratio of the integrated intensity of these lines was found to be different as compared to polycrystalline graphite. The position and intensity of the line around 1350 cm-1 strongly depend on the energy of the exciting laser line. This dispersion effect is again different from the dispersion in nanocrystalline graphite. It is discussed in terms of a photoselective resonance process. Transmission infrared spectra of the nanotubes show one broad and asymmetric line at 1575 cm-1 and a weaker line at 868 cm-1.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes are uniquely identified by a pair of chirality indices ( n , m ), which dictate the physical structures and electronic properties of each species 1 . Carbon nanotube research is currently facing two outstanding challenges: achieving chirality-controlled growth and understanding chirality-dependent device physics 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 . Addressing these challenges requires, respectively, high-throughput determination of the nanotube chirality distribution on growth substrates and in situ characterization of the nanotube electronic structure in operating devices. Direct optical imaging and spectroscopy techniques are well suited for both goals 7 , 8 , 9 , but their implementation at the single nanotube level has remained a challenge due to the small nanotube signal and unavoidable environment background 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 . Here, we report high-throughput real-time optical imaging and broadband in situ spectroscopy of individual carbon nanotubes on various substrates and in field-effect transistor devices using polarization-based microscopy combined with supercontinuum laser illumination. Our technique enables the complete chirality profiling of hundreds of individual carbon nanotubes, both semiconducting and metallic, on a growth substrate. In devices, we observe that high-order nanotube optical resonances are dramatically broadened by electrostatic doping, an unexpected behaviour that points to strong interband electron–electron scattering processes that could dominate ultrafast dynamics of excited states in carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Direct visualization and manipulation of individual carbon nanotubes in ambient conditions is of great significance for their characterizations and applications. However, the observation of individual carbon nanotubes usually requires electron microscopes under high vacuum. Optical microscopes are much more convenient to be used, yet their resolution is low. Here we realize the visualization and manipulation of individual ultralong carbon nanotubes under optical microscopes by deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles on them. The strong scattering of TiO2 nanoparticles to visible light renders them visible by optical microscopes. Micro-Raman-spectroscopy measurement of individual carbon nanotubes is greatly facilitated by their optical visualization. With the assistance of TiO2 nanoparticles, individual carbon nanotubes can be easily manipulated under an optical microscope at macroscopic scale and in ambient conditions. Based on our approach, various manipulation of ultralong carbon nanotubes, including cutting, transfer, fabrication of structures/devices and pulling out inner shells of multiwalled carbon nanotubes, are demonstrated.

Abstract:Individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been investigated by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) using silver tips on the Ag(111) substrate with a low-temperature ultrahigh-vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. Thanks to the strong and highly localized plasmonic field offered by the silver nanogap, the spatial resolution of TERS on CNTs is driven down to about 0.7 nm. Such a high spatial resolution allows to visualize in real space the spatial extent of the defect-induced D-band scattering, to track the strain-induced spectral evolution, and to resolve the spectral differences between the inner and the outer sides of a bent CNT, all at the nanometer scale.

Abstract:Thin films of poly(methyl methacrylate)–multiwalled nanotubes composites were produced by spin coating using different nanotube concentrations. The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, and Raman spectroscopy to obtain information on the possible interactions between the constituents and to control the homogeneity of the films. Electrical conductivity measurements of the composites, as a function of the nanotube concentration, show a percolation threshold at very low concentration. Also, the J–E characteristics exhibits a nonlinear behavior at low concentration, becoming linear far above the threshold.

Abstract:Resonance Raman spectra of individual strained ultralong single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are studied. Torsional and uniaxial strains are introduced by atomic force microscopy manipulation. Torsional strain strongly affects the Raman spectra, inducing a large downshift in the E-2 symmetry mode in the G(+) band, but a slight upshift for the rest of the G modes and also an upshift in the radial breathing mode (RBM). Whereas uniaxial strain has no effect on the frequency of either the E-2 symmetry mode in the G(+) band or the RBM, it downshifts the rest of the G modes. The Raman intensity change reflects the effect of these strains on the SWNT electronic band structure.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) illuminated by white light should appear colored due to resonance Rayleigh scattering. However, true-color imaging of SWCNTs on substrates has not been reported, because of the extremely low scattering intensity of SWCNTs and the strong substrate scattering. Here we show that Rayleigh scattering can be greatly enhanced by the interface dipole enhancement effect. Consequently colorful SWCNTs on substrates can be directly imaged under an optical microscope by wide field supercontinuum laser illumination, which facilitates high throughput chirality assignment of individual SWCNTs. This approach, termed “Rayleigh imaging microscopy”, is not restricted to SWCNTs, but widely applicable to a variety of nanomaterials, which enables the colorful nanoworld to be explored under optical microscopes.

Abstract:As a kind of new nano-materials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of the particular properties, in the aspects of physics, mechanics, electronics, optics and so on. They indicate the remarkable potential applications in the nano-electronic devices, composite materials, scanning probe microscopy (SPM), field emission, hydrogen storage and environment protection. The research on CNTs has become a hot spot in the fields of nano-science and nano-technology, especially in nano-materials (Iijima, 1991; Yu et al., 2000; Frank et al., 1998; Chiang et al., 2001). The commonly used methods for the measurement and characterization of CNTs include the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and so on. Electron microscopy and SPM are commonly used in nowadays research on nano-science. And both of them provide direct characterization of the topography and nano-structure of CNTs with comparatively high spatial resolution. However, they fail to provide the corresponding specimens' chemical information, which is also required in the research and identifications of nano-materials and nano-structures. Raman spectroscopy is one of the spectral analysis methods used to detect vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes information of the specimen structures or molecular structures, and is usually employed to obtain the structural information of CNTs (Rao et al., 1997; Dresselhaus et al., 2002; Dresselhaus et al., 2005). However, this spectral method is subject to two obstacles. One is the diffraction-limited spatial resolution, and the other is its inherent small Raman cross section and weak signal. As facing the challenges of nano-scale measurement, a new characterization method, which can simultaneously obtain topography characteristics with nanometer resolution and spectral information from nanometer localized specimen surface is desiderated. Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) is an emerging technology developed to realize the aim mentioned above in the recent years (Stöckle et al, 2000; Hayazawa et al., 2000; Hartschuh et al., 2003; Pettinger et al., 2004). It spans the main obstacles of conventional Raman spectroscopy by tactfully combining the near-field optics advantage of nanometric spatial resolution and spectroscopy of obtaining chemical information.
