Abstract:Pressure engineering has attracted growing interest in the understanding of structural changes and structure-property relations of layered materials. In this study, we investigated the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of Mn3Sn.In-situhigh-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments revealed that Mn3Sn maintained hexagonal lattice symmetry within the pressure range of ambient to 50.4 GPa. The ratio of lattice constantsc/ais almost independent of the pressure and remains constant at 0.80, indicating a stable cell shape. Density functional theory calculations revealed the strong correlation between the crystal structure and the localization ofdelectrons. The Mn3Sn has been found in flat energy bands near the Fermi level, exhibiting a large density of states (DOS) primarily contributed by thedelectrons. This large DOS near the Fermi level increases the energy barrier for a phase transition, making the transition from the hexagonal phase to the tetragonal phase challenging. Our results confirm the structural stability of Mn3Sn under high pressure, which is beneficial to the robustness of spintronic devices.
Dimensional Crossover Tuned by Pressure in Layered Magnetic NiPS3

Abstract:Layered magnetic transition-metal thiophosphate NiPS3 has unique two-dimensional (2D) magnetic properties and electronic behavior. The electronic band structure and corresponding magnetic state are expected to sensitive to the interlayer interaction, which can be tuned by external pressure. Here, we report an insulator-metal transition accompanied with magnetism collapse during the 2D-3D crossover in structure induced by hydrostatic pressure. A two-stage phase transition from monoclinic (C2=m) to trigonal (P-31m) lattice is identified by ab initio simulation and confirmed by high-pressure XRD and Raman data, corresponding to a layer by layer slip mechanism along the a-axis. Temperature dependence resistance measurements and room temperature infrared spectroscopy show that the insulator-metal transition occurs near 20 GPa as well as magnetism collapse, which is further confirmed by low temperature Raman measurement and theoretical calculation. These results establish a strong correlation among the structural change, electric transport, and magnetic phase transition and expand our understandings about the layered magnetic materials.

Abstract:MnPS3, a novel ternary-layered material, hasattractedextensive attention in materials, physics, and chemistry owing toits excellent electrical transport and photoelectric properties. Pressureis a useful technique to explore unprecedented phenomena and propertiesin condensed matter. In this study, combining high-pressure Ramanspectroscopy, high-pressure absorption spectroscopy measurements,and first-principles calculations, the pressure-induced lattice andelectronic structural evolutions of multilayer MnPS3 wereuncovered. A pressure-induced lifted symmetry (layer sliding) of multilayerMnPS(3) from the C2/m-staggeredP-dimer phase (phase I) to P3 1m aligned P-dimer phase (phase II) at 6.7 GPa was demonstrated, evidencedby the overlap of E-g (5) and A(1g) (3) modes under high pressure and further first-principles calculations.Meanwhile, the linearly decreased optical band gap with pressure indicatedthat the charge-transfer excitations that define the gap were confinedin intra-slab in nature regardless of the interlayer sliding. Further calculated band gap structure also suggested that no obvious electronicstructural phase transition occurred in multilayer MnPS3 during the pressure-induced phase transition of multilayer MnPS3 except from a decreased band gap with pressure. In addition,both the results of absorption spectroscopy measurements and first-principlescalculation demonstrated that multilayer MnPS3 remainedto be a direct band gap semiconductor up to 21.8 GPa. Our findingsare of great significance in expanding the application of compressiveMnPS(3) in photoelectric devices.

Abstract:The structural and electrical transport properties of MnPS3 are studied under extreme pressure up to 55 GPa using first-principles calculations and in situ high-pressure electrical experiments. The reversible structural phase transitions are observed at around 10 GPa and 28 GPa by enthalpy calculation, both reflected in the lattice constants mutation and cell volume collapse. The layer sliding of atoms is revealed using the P2-P1′ atom pair induced by phase transitions. The discontinuous electrical parameters also display reversible phase transition at approximately 29.2 GPa, where the p-type semiconductor to n-type transition is found due to the positive and negative inversion of Hall coefficient. The metallization transition is determined by the energy-band closure, in good agreement with the enhancing metallic behavior experimentally evidenced above 29.5 GPa. Exploring the pressure-induced mechanism concerning structural and transport behaviors of MnPS3-type sheds light on its application in two-dimensional (2D) spintronic devices under extreme conditions.

Abstract:The crystal structure, vibrational spectra, and magnetic structure of quasi-two-dimensional layered van der Waals material MnPS3 were studied using x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy at high pressures up to 28 GPa, and neutron diffraction up to 3.6 GPa, respectively. A structural phase transition between two monoclinic modifications of the same C2/m symmetry was observed, evolving gradually in the pressure range of about 1–6 GPa. The transition is accompanied by abrupt shortening of lattice parameters, significant reduction of the monoclinic distortion, and anomalies in the pressure behavior of several Raman-mode frequencies. No more structural phase transitions were revealed in the studied pressure range. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) state with a propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0) remains stable in ambient pressure and high-pressure structural phases of MnPS3 at least up to 3.6 GPa. The Néel temperature increases noticeably with a pressure coefficient of dTN/dP=6.7 K/GPa, leading to modification of the dominant first-neighbor magnetic interaction exchange parameter with a relevant coefficient dJ1/dP≈−0.6 meV/GPa. This observation is in contrast to the pressure behavior of FePS3 , demonstrating modification of the AFM state from 2D-like to 3D-like at the similar pressure-induced structural phase transition. Abstract:Unconventional superconductors are often characterized by numerous competing and even intertwined orders in their phase diagrams. The fluctuations associated with these orders may provide the exotic pairing glue that underlies their high-temperature superconductivity. Helimagnet MnP, the first Mn-based superconductor under pressure, lacks high rotational symmetry. However, our resonant soft x-ray scattering experiment discovers novel helical orbital density wave (ODW) orders in MnP and reveals intertwined ordering phenomena. In particular, an ODW forms with half the period of the spin order and fully develops slightly above the spin ordering temperature, which resembles the behaviors of the nematic phase of the iron-based superconductors. Moreover, we find that their domains develop simultaneously, yet the spin order domains are larger than those of the ODW; and they cooperatively produce another ODW with 1/3 the period of the spin order. These observations provide a comprehensive picture of the intertwined orders in this three-dimensional, low-symmetry system and shed light on the understanding of its superconducting mechanism.

Abstract:We studied the crystal structure and spin state of MnP under high pressure with synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray emission spectroscopy. MnP has an exceedingly strong anisotropy in compressibility, with the primary compressible direction along the b axis of the Pnma structure. X-ray emission spectroscopy reveals a pressure-driven quenching of the spin state in MnP. Firstprinciples calculations suggest that the strongly anisotropic compression behavior significantly enhances the dispersion of the Mn d-orbitals and the splitting of the d orbital levels compared to the hypothetical isotropic compression behavior. Thus, we propose spin quenching results mainly from the significant enhancement of the itinerancy of d electrons and partly from spin rearrangement occurring in the split d-orbital levels near the Fermi level. This explains the fast suppression of magnetic ordering in MnP under high pressure. The spin quenching lags behind the occurrence of superconductivity at 8 GPa implying that spin fluctuations govern the electron pairing for superconductivity.

Abstract:Recent experimental work shows that FePS$_3$ undergoes phase transitions from $C2/m$ ($\beta\sim107^{\circ}$) to $C2/m$ ($\beta\sim90^{\circ}$) at $6$ GPa and then to metallic $P\bar{3}1m$ at $14$ GPa, with the magnetic ordering wave vector turning from $k=(01\frac{1}{2})$ to $k=(010)$ at $2$ GPa and to short-range magnetic order accompanying the insulator-metal transition. By preserving the magnetic point groups in $ab \ initio$ calculations we report the following: (1) We successfully reproduce the first magnetic structure transition at $1.2$ GPa and briefly discuss the influence of the Hubbard U parameter on this transition. This isostructural transition causes a change of the Brillouin zone from base-centered monoclinic to primitive monoclinic, and an indrect band gap to direct band gap transition. (2) There is a rotation of the Fe-S octahedron about $0.5^\circ$ through the $[001]$ axis before the neighboring layers shift. (3) The shift between neighboring layers is predicted to occur at $10.0$ GPa and reverses the energy order between $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$. (4) A sudden decrease of Fe-S bond length to $2.20$ Å\ accompanies the vanishing of magnetic moment in the insulator-metal transition. Our work shows the importance of symmetries of magnetic structures in pressure-induced phase transition of magnetic systems.

Abstract:The presence of two-dimensional (2D) layer-stacking heterostructures that can efficiently tune the interface properties by stacking desirable materials provides a platform to investigate some physical phenomena, such as the proximity effect and magnetic exchange coupling. Here, we report the observation of antisymmetric magnetoresistance in a van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic (AFM/FM) heterostructure of MnPS3/Fe3GeTe2 when the temperature is below the Neel temperature of MnPS3. Distinguished from two resistance states in conventional giant magnetoresistance, the magnetoresistance in the MnPS3/Fe3GeTe2 heterostructure exhibits three states, of high, intermediate, and low resistance. This antisymmetric magnetoresistance spike is determined by an unsynchronized magnetic switching between the AFM/FM interface layer and the bulk of Fe3GeTe2 during magnetization reversal. Our work highlights that the artificial vdW stacking structure holds potential to explore some physical phenomena and spintronic device applications.

Abstract:Controlling the phases of matter is a central task in condensed matter physics and materials science. In 2D magnets, manipulating spin orientation is of great significance in the context of the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Herein, a systematic study of temperature- and pressure-dependent magnetic properties up to 1 GPa in van der Waals CrPS4 is reported. Owing to the temperature-dependent change of the magnetic anisotropy energy, the material undergoes a first-order spin reorientation transition with magnetic moments realigning from being almost parallel with the c axis in the ac plane to the quasi-1D chains of CrS6 octahedra along the b axis upon heating. The spin reorientation temperature is suppressed after applying pressure, shifting the high-temperature phase to lower temperatures with the emergence of spin-flop transitions under magnetic fields applied along the b axis. The saturation field increases with pressure, indicating the enhancement of interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling. However, the Neel temperature is slightly reduced, which is ascribed to the suppression of intralayer ferromagnetic coupling. The work demonstrates the control of spin orientation and metamagnetic transitions in layered antiferromagnets, which may provide new perspectives for exploring 2D magnetism and related spintronic devices.
A Distinct Spin Structure and Giant Baromagnetic Effect in MnNiGe Compounds with Fe-Doping

Abstract:Spin structure of a magnetic system results from the competition of various exchange couplings. Pressure-driven spin structure evolution, through altering interatomic distance, and hence, electronic structure produces baromagnetic effect (BME), which has potential applications in sensor/actuator field. Here, we report a new spin structure(CyS-AFMb) with antiferromagnetic(AFM) nature in Fe-doped Mn0.87Fe0.13NiGe. Neutron powder diffraction (NPD) under in situ hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field was conducted to reveal the spin configuration and its instabilities. We discovered that a pressure higher than 4 kbar can induce abnormal change of Mn(Fe)–Mn(Fe) distances and transform the CyS-AFMb into a conical spiral ferromagnetic(FM) configuration(45°-CoS-FMa) with easily magnetized but shortened magnetic moment by as much as 22%. The observed BME far exceeds previous reports. Our first-principles calculations provide theoretical supports for the enhanced BME. Abstract:Spin crossover plays a central role in the structural instability, net magnetic moment modification, metallization, and even in superconductivity in corresponding materials. Most reports on the pressure-induced spin crossover with a large volume collapse have so far focused on compounds with a single transition metal. Here we report a comprehensive high-pressure investigation of a mixed Fe-Mn perovskite La2FeMnO6. Under pressure, the strong coupling between Fe andMn leads to a combined valence/spin transition: Fe3+(S = 5/2) -> Fe2+(S = 0) and Mn3+(S = 2) -> Mn4+(S = 3/2), with an isostructural phase transition. The spin transitions of both Fe and Mn are offset by similar to 20 GPa of the onset pressure, and the lattice collapse occurs in between. Interestingly, Fe3+ ion shows an abnormal behavior when it reaches a lower valence state (Fe2+) accompanied by a +0.5 eV energy shift in the Fe K-absorption edge at 15 GPa. This process is associated with the charge-spin-orbital state transition from high spin Fe3+ to low spin Fe2+, caused by the significantly enhanced t(2g)-e(g) crystal field splitting in the compressed lattice under high pressure. Density functional theory calculations confirm the energy preference of the high-pressure state with charge redistribution accompanied by spin state transition of Fe ions. Moreover, La2FeMnO6 maintains semiconductor behaviors even when the pressure reached 144.5 GPa as evidenced by the electrical transport measurements, despite the huge resistivity decreasing seven orders of magnitude compared with that at ambient pressure. The investigation carried out here demonstrates high flexibility of double perovskites and their good potentials for optimizing the functionality of these materials.

Abstract:Metal thio(seleno)phosphates MPX$_3$ have attracted considerable attentions with wide spanned band gaps and rich magnetic properties. In this series, two neighboring members MnPS$_3$ and NiPS$_3$ differ in magnetic atoms, magnetic easy axes, spin anisotropy, as well as nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions. The competition between these components may cause intriguing physical phenomena. In this article, the evolution of magnetism of Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$PS$_3$ series is reported. Despite the incompatible antiferromagnetic orders of two end members, the antiferromagnetism persists as the ground state in the whole substitution region. The magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ show nonmonotonic V-shape behavior, and the reentrant spin glass phase at x=0.5 is observed. In addition, abnormal bifurcation of $T_{\rm N}$ occurs at x=0.75, which may be due to the temperature-dependent spin reorientation or phase separation. The evolution of magnetism is further confirmed semi-quantitatively by our density functional theory calculations. Our study indicates that exotic magnetism can be intrigued when multi-degrees of freedom are involved in these low-dimensional systems, which call for more in-depth microscopic studies in future.

Coexistence of Zigzag Antiferromagnetic Order and Superconductivity in Compressed NiPSe3

Abstract:NiPSe3 is regarded as a bandwidth-controlled Mott insulator, distinct from the widely studied Mott insulating magnetic graphene MPSe3 (M = Mn and Fe) family. By employing high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we observe two structural transitions as a function of pressure. With the help of first-principles calculations, we discover the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moment directions of NiPSe3 switch from out-of-plane to in-plane and the honeycomb layers slide relative to each other at the first structural transition. The in-plane AFM order persists until the second structural transition, whereupon the two-dimensional (2D) structure assumes a more three-dimensional (3D) character. A bandwidth-controlled Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) occurs between the two structural transitions at Pc -8.0 GPa, concomitant with the emergence of superconductivity with Tc -4.8 K. The superconductivity in NiPSe3 emerging in the 2D monoclinic phase coexists with the in-plane AFM order and continues into the 3D trigonal phase. Our electronic structure calculations reveal that the IMT and supercon-ductivity in NiPSe3 are both related to the enhanced Se2-4p and Ni2+ 3d electronic hybridizations under pressure. From these results, we construct a temperature-pressure electronic phase diagram of NiPSe3, revealing interesting relationships between magnetism and superconductivity.

Abstract:High pressure is an important dimension for the emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides, including high-temperature superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and magnetoelectric coupling. In these multiply correlated systems, the interplay between lattice, charge, orbital, and spin is extremely susceptible to external pressure. Magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) is one of the oldest known magnetic materials and magnetic minerals, yet its high pressure behaviors are still not clear. In particular, the crystal structure of the high-pressure phase has remained contentious. Here, we investigate the pressure-induced phase transitions in Fe(3)O(4) from first-principles density-functional theory. It is revealed that the net magnetic moment, arising from two ferrimagnetically coupled sublattices in Fe(3)O(4), shows an abrupt drop when entering into the high-pressure phase but recovers finite value when the pressure is beyond 65.1 GPa. The origin lies in the redistribution of Fe 3d orbital occupation with the change of crystal field, where successive structural transitions from ambient pressure phase Fd3[combining overline]m to high pressure phase Pbcm (at 29.7 GPa) and further to Bbmm (at 65.1 GPa) are established accurately. These findings not only explain the experimental observations on the structural and magnetic properties of the highly compressed Fe(3)O(4) but also suggest the existence of highly magnetized magnetite in the Earth's lower mantle.

Abstract:Abstract Controlling the phases of matter is a central task in condensed matter physics and materials science. In 2D magnets, manipulating spin orientation is of great significance in the context of the Mermin–Wagner theorem. Herein, a systematic study of temperature‐ and pressure‐dependent magnetic properties up to 1 GPa in van der Waals CrPS 4 is reported. Owing to the temperature‐dependent change of the magnetic anisotropy energy, the material undergoes a first‐order spin reorientation transition with magnetic moments realigning from being almost parallel with the c axis in the ac plane to the quasi‐1D chains of CrS 6 octahedra along the b axis upon heating. The spin reorientation temperature is suppressed after applying pressure, shifting the high‐temperature phase to lower temperatures with the emergence of spin‐flop transitions under magnetic fields applied along the b axis. The saturation field increases with pressure, indicating the enhancement of interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling. However, the Néel temperature is slightly reduced, which is ascribed to the suppression of intralayer ferromagnetic coupling. The work demonstrates the control of spin orientation and metamagnetic transitions in layered antiferromagnets, which may provide new perspectives for exploring 2D magnetism and related spintronic devices.

Abstract:Layered structural materials have been a fertile playground to investigate mechanisms of fundamental physics and explore potential applications. Here, we report investigations on ferromagnetic van der Waals CrSiTe3 via high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electrical resistance, and magnetoresistance measurements. Under compression, CrSiTe3 undergoes an insulator-metal transition and a structural transition at ∼7.5 GPa. Concomitantly with the structural transition, the magnetoresistance changes sign, the negative Hall coefficient increases dramatically, and superconductivity emerges at 3 K. The superconductivity persists up to the highest measured pressure of 47.1 GPa with a maximum Tc≈ 4.5 K at ∼30 GPa. Our results suggest that CrSiTe3 is paramagnetic in the pressure range of superconductivity. The discoveries of superconductivity and magnetic transition in ferromagnetic CrSiTe3 under pressure provide new perspectives to explore the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in Cr-based two-dimensional van der Waals materials.
