Abstract:In this paper, an enhanced VARTM process is proposed and its pressure effect on resin infusion behavior and composite material performance is studied to reveal the control mechanism of the fiber volume fraction and void content. The molding is vacuumized during the resin injection stage while it is pressurized during the mold filling and curing stages via a VARTM pressure control system designed in this paper. Theoretical calculations and simulation methods are used to reveal the resin's in-plane, transverse, and three-dimensional flow patterns in multi-layer media. For typical thin-walled components, the infiltration behavior of resin in isotropic porous media is studied, elucidating the control mechanisms of fiber volume fraction and void content. The experiments demonstrate that the enhanced VARTM process significantly improves mold filling efficiency and composite's performance. Compared to the regular VARTM process, the panel thickness is reduced by 4% from 1.7 mm, the average tensile strength is increased by 7.3% to 760 MPa, the average flexural strength remains at approximately 720 MPa, porosity is decreased from 1.5% to below 1%, and the fiber volume fraction is increased from 55% to 62%.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the issues of low fiber volume fraction, high porosity, and low filling efficiency in the process of preparing composite materials using the Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) process. Specifically, the authors propose an enhanced VARTM process and study the effect of pressure on resin infiltration behavior and composite material properties to reveal the mechanisms controlling fiber volume fraction and porosity. ### Main Issues: 1. **Low Fiber Volume Fraction**: In the traditional VARTM process, insufficient resin infiltration leads to a lower fiber volume fraction. 2. **High Porosity**: In the traditional VARTM process, bubbles are easily formed during resin infiltration, resulting in higher porosity. 3. **Low Filling Efficiency**: In the traditional VARTM process, the resin filling speed is relatively slow, affecting production efficiency. ### Solutions: 1. **Enhanced VARTM Process**: By designing a bidirectional adjustable pressure unit, vacuum treatment is performed during the resin injection stage, and pressure is applied during the mold filling and curing stages, thereby improving resin infiltration behavior and composite material properties. 2. **Theoretical Calculation and Simulation**: Through theoretical calculations and simulation methods, the study investigates the planar, transverse, and three-dimensional flow patterns of resin in multilayer media, as well as the infiltration behavior of resin in isotropic porous media in typical thin-walled components. 3. **Experimental Verification**: Experimental verification of resin flow patterns and mechanisms is conducted to optimize molding parameters. ### Experimental Results: - **Panel Thickness Reduction**: Compared to the traditional VARTM process, the panel thickness is reduced by 4%, from 1.7 mm to 1.63 mm. - **Increased Tensile Strength**: The average tensile strength increased by 7.3%, reaching 760 MPa. - **Maintained Flexural Strength**: The average flexural strength remained at approximately 720 MPa. - **Reduced Porosity**: The porosity decreased from 1.5% to below 1%. - **Increased Fiber Volume Fraction**: The fiber volume fraction increased from 55% to 62%. Through these improvements, the enhanced VARTM process significantly improves the mechanical properties and production efficiency of composite materials.
