Abstract:By shining a tightly focused laser light on the condensate and moving the center of the beam along the spiral line one may stir the condensate and create vortices. It is shown that one can induce rotation of the condensate in the direction opposite to the direction of the stirring.

Abstract:We studied the nucleation of vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate stirred by a laser beam. We observed the vortex cores using time-of-flight absorption imaging. By varying the size of the stirrer, we observed either discrete resonances or a broad response as a function of the frequency of the stirrer's motion. Stirring beams small compared to the condensate size generated vortices below the critical rotation frequency for the nucleation of surface modes, suggesting a local mechanism of generation. In addition, we observed the centrifugal distortion of the condensate due to the rotating vortex lattice and found evidence for bent vortices.

Abstract:A technique for vortex creation in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates is suggested: Vortices can be excited at the edge of a condensate and guided to the center by a laser beam moving along a spiral trajectory. Numerical simulations demonstrate the suggested technique. Parameter ranges for the method are given. Computer animations illustrate the dynamics of the guided vortices.

Abstract:Atom optic techniques are proposed to control the excitation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an atomic trap. We show that by employing the dipole potential induced by four highly detuned traveling-wave laser beams with appropriate phases and frequencies, one can coherently excite a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate composed of ultracold alkali-metal atoms into a state rotating around the trap center. Pure vortex states can be created with this scheme if the condensate is trapped in an anharmonic trap.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experiment [Wright et al., Phys. Rev. A 88, 063633 (2013)], we investigate formation of vortices in an annular BEC stirred by a narrow blue-detuned optical beam. In the framework of a two-dimensional mean field model, we study the dissipative dynamics of the condensate with parameters matched to the experimental conditions. Vortex-antivortex pairs appear near the center of the stirrer in the bulk of the condensate for slow motion of the stirring beam. When the barrier angular velocity is above some critical value, an outer edge surface mode develops and breaks into the vortices entering the condensate annulus. We determine the conditions for creation of the vortex excitations in the stirred toroidal condensate and compare our results with the experimental observations.

Abstract:The surface excitations, shape deformation, and the formation of persistent current for a Gaussian obstacle potential rotating in a highly oblate Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) are investigated. A vortex dipole can be produced and trapped in the center of the stirrer even for the slow motion of the stirring beam. When the angular velocity of the obstacle is above some critical value, the condensate shape can be deformed remarkably at the corresponding rotation frequency followed by surface wave excitations. After a long enough time, a small number of vortices are found to be either trapped in the condensate or pinned by the obstacle, and a vortex dipole or several vortices can be trapped at the beam center, which provides another way to manipulate the vortex.

Abstract:We investigate the superfluid behavior of a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^6$Li molecules. In the experiment by Weimer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 095301 (2015) a condensate is stirred by a weak, red-detuned laser beam along a circular path around the trap center. The rate of induced heating increases steeply above a velocity $v_c$, which we define as the critical velocity. Below this velocity, the moving beam creates almost no heating. In this paper, we demonstrate a quantitative understanding of the critical velocity. Using both numerical and analytical methods, we identify the non-zero temperature, the circular motion of the stirrer, and the density profile of the cloud as key factors influencing the magnitude of $v_c$. A direct comparison to the experimental data shows excellent agreement.

Abstract:Simulations of a rotationally stirred condensate show that a regime of simple behaviour occurs in which a single vortex cycles in and out of the condensate. We present a simple quantitative model of this behaviour, which accurately describes the full vortex dynamics, including a critical angular speed of stirring for vortex formation. A method for experimentally preparing a condensate in a central vortex state is suggested.

Abstract:The rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an external electric field is studied. The vortex lattice formed in the condensate will shift after the electric field is applied. The electric field changes the particle density distribution and makes the system more stable. A method to detect this shift is also suggested.

Abstract:We present a quantum mechanical treatment of the mechanical stirring of Bose-Einstein condensates using classical field techniques. In our approach the condensate and excited modes are described using a Hamiltonian classical field method in which the atom number and (rotating frame) energy are strictly conserved. We simulate a T = 0 quasi-2D condensate perturbed by a rotating anisotropic trapping potential. Vacuum fluctuations in the initial state provide an irreducible mechanism for breaking the initial symmetries of the condensate and seeding the subsequent dynamical instability. Highly turbulent motion develops and we quantify the emergence of a rotating thermal component that provides the dissipation necessary for the nucleation and motional-damping of vortices in the condensate. Vortex lattice formation is not observed, rather the vortices assemble into a spatially disordered vortex liquid state. We discuss methods we have developed to identify the condensate in the presence of an irregular distribution of vortices, determine the thermodynamic parameters of the thermal component, and extract damping rates from the classical field trajectories.

Abstract:Heteronuclear molecules have attracted wide attention due to their permanent electric dipole moments. Analogous to atoms with magnetic dipoles, the existence of nonzero electric dipoles significantly enhances the possibilities and mechanisms for the control and design of quantum degenerate molecule systems with electric (E) fields. This work proposes a vortex creation mechanism inside a condensate of heteronuclear molecules through the adiabatic flipping of the axial bias of an analogous E-field Ioffe–Pritchard trap (IPT), extending the original protocol of Isoshima et al (2000 Phys. Rev. A 61 063610) for an atomic spinor condensate inside a magnetic (B)-field IPT. We provide both analytic proof and numerical simulations to illustrate the high fidelity operation of this vortex pump protocol. We hope our work provides stimulating experimental possibilities for active investigations in quantum degenerate molecule systems.
Generating and manipulating quantized vortices on-demand in a Bose-Einstein condensate: A numerical study

Abstract:We numerically investigate an experimentally viable method for generating and manipulating on-demand several vortices in a highly oblate atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in order to initialize complex vortex distributions for studies of vortex dynamics. The method utilizes moving laser beams to generate, capture, and transport vortices inside and outside the BEC. We examine in detail this methodology and show a wide parameter range of applicability for the prototypical two-vortex case, as well as case examples of producing and manipulating several vortices for which there is no net circulation, corresponding to equal numbers of positive and negative circulation vortices, and cases for which there is one net quantum of circulation. We find that the presence of dissipation can help stabilize the pinning of the vortices on their respective laser beam pinning sites. Finally, we illustrate how to utilize laser beams as repositories that hold large numbers of vortices and how to deposit individual vortices in a sequential fashion in the repositories in order to construct superfluid flows about the repository beams with several quanta of circulation.

Abstract:We study a harmonically trapped highly oblate two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, which consists of both dipolar and scalar bosonic atoms. When the dipoles are polarized along the symmetry axis of the trap, the dipolar atoms' density exhibits a flat-disk regime at the trap center. It is found that the dipolar component is easier to induce the first vortex when the trap is rotating about the symmetry axis, if the long-range dipolar interactions dominate over the contact interactions, and vice versa. Vortex lattices with the compensating triangular, square, and stripe structures can be formed respectively under rapid rotation. When the dipoles are polarized perpendicular to the rotation axis, the two components are generically phase separated into a kernel-shell structure due to the anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. While the giant-hole states are induced under slow rotation, the compensating stripe vortex structures are stabilized under fast rotation. In particular, a stripe-splitting structure is found to be competing with the stripe ones. These features are expected to be observed in the mixture of Cr-52 atoms in the two different spin states. Abstract:Quantized vortices are a prototypical feature of superfluidity that have been observed in multiple quantum gas experiments. But the occurrence of vortices in dipolar quantum gases-a class of ultracold gases characterized by long-range anisotropic interactions-has not been reported yet. Here we exploit the anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole interaction of a dysprosium Bose-Einstein condensate to induce angular symmetry breaking in an otherwise cylindrically symmetric pancake-shaped trap. Tilting the magnetic field towards the radial plane deforms the cloud into an ellipsoid, which is then set into rotation. At stirring frequencies approaching the radial trap frequency, we observe the generation of dynamically unstable surface excitations, which cause angular momentum to be pumped into the system through vortices. Under continuous rotation, the vortices arrange into a stripe configuration along the field, in close agreement with numerical simulations.

Quantized Circular Motion of a Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate in Laser Beams: Coherent Rotation and Vortices

Abstract:We study the creation of vortex states in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by a rotating force. For a harmonic trapping potential the rotating force induces only a circular motion of the whole condensate around the trap center which does not depend on the interatomic interaction. For the creation of a pure vortex state it is necessary to confine the atoms in an anharmonic trapping potential. The efficiency of the creation can be greatly enhanced by a sinusodial variation of the force's angular velocity. We present analytical and numerical calculations for the case of a quartic trapping potential. The physical mechanism behind the requirement of an anharmonic trapping potential for the creation of pure vortex states is explained. Superfluidity of a laser-stirred Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract:We study superfluidity of a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by stirring it with a Gaussian potential oscillating back and forth along the axial dimension of the condensate, motivated by experiments of C. Raman et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2502 (1999). Using classical-field simulations and perturbation theory we examine the induced heating rate, based on the total energy of the system, as a function of the stirring velocity $v$. We identify the onset of dissipation by a sharply increasing heating rate above a velocity $v_c$, which we define as the critical velocity. We show that $v_c$ is influenced by the oscillating motion, the strength of the stirrer, the temperature and the inhomogeneous density of the cloud. This results in a vanishing $v_c$ for the parameters similar to the experiments, which is inconsistent with the measurement of nonzero $v_c$. However, if the heating rate is based on the thermal fraction after a 100 ms equilibration time, our simulation recovers the experimental observations. We demonstrate that this discrepancy is due to the slow relaxation of the stirred cloud and dipole mode excitation of the cloud.

Abstract:The dynamical vortex production, with a trap-confining time-dependent stirred potential, is studied by using mass-imbalanced cold-atom coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). The vortex formation is explored by considering that both coupled species are confined by a pancake-like harmonic trap, slightly modified elliptically by a time-dependent periodic potential, with the characteristic frequency enough larger than the transversal trap frequency. The approach is applied to the experimentally accessible binary mixtures $^{85}$Rb-$^{133}$Cs and $^{85}$Rb-$^{87}$Rb, which allow us to verify the effect of mass differences in the dynamics. For both species, the time evolutions of the respective energy contributions, together with associated velocities, are studied in order to distinguish turbulent from non-turbulent flows. By using the angular momentum and moment of inertia mean values, effective classical rotation frequencies are suggested, which are further considered within simulations in the rotating frame without the stirring potential. Spectral analysis is also provided for both species, with the main focus being the incompressible kinetic energies. In the transient turbulent regime, before stable vortex patterns are produced, the characteristic $k^{-5/3}$ Kolmogorov behavior is clearly identified for both species at intermediate momenta $k$ above the inverse Thomas-Fermi radial positions, further modified by the universal $k^{-3}$ scaling at momenta higher than the inverse of the respective healing lengths.

Abstract:We show theoretically that it is possible to optically control collective spin-exchange processes in spinor Bose condensates through virtual photoassociation. The interplay between optically induced spin exchange and spin-dependent collisions provides a flexible tool for the control of atomic spin dynamics, including enhanced or inhibited quantum spin oscillations, the optically induced ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition, and coherent matter-wave spin conversion.

Abstract:The response of superfluids to the external rotation, evidenced by emergence of quantised vortices, distinguishes them from conventional fluids. In this work, we demonstrate that the number of vortices in a stirred polariton condensate depends on the characteristic size of the employed rotating potential induced by the nonresonant laser excitation. For smaller sizes, a single vortex with a topological charge of +-1 corresponding to the stirring direction is formed. However, for larger optical traps, clusters of two or three co-rotating vortices appear in the narrow range of GHz stirring speed.

Dynamics of Polar-Core Spin Vortices in Inhomogeneous Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:In the easy-plane phase, a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate is magnetized in a plane transverse to the applied Zeeman field. This phase supports polar-core spin vortices (PCVs), which consist of phase windings of transverse magnetization. Here we show that spin-changing collisions cause a PCV to accelerate down density gradients in an inhomogeneous condensate. The dynamics is well-described by a simplified model adapted from scalar systems, which predicts the dependence of the dynamics on trap tightness and quadratic Zeeman energy. In a harmonic trap, a PCV accelerates radially to the condensate boundary, in stark contrast to the azimuthal motion of vortices in a scalar condensate. In a trap that has a local potential maximum at the centre, the PCV exhibits oscillations around the trap centre, which persist for a remarkably long time. The oscillations coincide with the emission and reabsorption of axial spin waves, which reflect off the condensate boundary.
