Abstract:Quantized vortices are the hallmark of superfluidity, and are often sought out as the first observable feature in new superfluid systems. Following the recent experimental observation of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates comprised of atoms with inherent long-range dipole-dipole interactions [Nat. Phys. 18, 1453-1458 (2022)], we thoroughly investigate vortex properties in the three-dimensional dominantly dipolar regime, where beyond-mean-field effects are crucial for stability, and investigate the interplay between trap geometry and magnetic field tilt angle.

Abstract:Supersolids are states of matter that spontaneously break two continuous symmetries: translational invariance due to the appearance of a crystal structure and phase invariance due to phase locking of single-particle wave functions, responsible for superfluid phenomena. While originally predicted to be present in solid helium, ultracold quantum gases provided a first platform to observe supersolids, with particular success coming from dipolar atoms. Phase locking in dipolar supersolids has been probed through e.g. measurements of the phase coherence and gapless Goldstone modes, but quantized vortices, a hydrodynamic fingerprint of superfluidity, have not yet been observed. Here, with the prerequisite pieces at our disposal, namely a method to generate vortices in dipolar gases and supersolids with two-dimensional crystalline order, we report on the theoretical investigation and experimental observation of vortices in the supersolid phase. Our work reveals a fundamental difference in vortex seeding dynamics between unmodulated and modulated quantum fluids. This opens the door to study the hydrodynamic properties of exotic quantum systems with multiple spontaneously broken symmetries, in disparate domains such as quantum crystals and neutron stars.

Vortex Competition in a Rotating Two-Component Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract:We study a harmonically trapped highly oblate two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, which consists of both dipolar and scalar bosonic atoms. When the dipoles are polarized along the symmetry axis of the trap, the dipolar atoms' density exhibits a flat-disk regime at the trap center. It is found that the dipolar component is easier to induce the first vortex when the trap is rotating about the symmetry axis, if the long-range dipolar interactions dominate over the contact interactions, and vice versa. Vortex lattices with the compensating triangular, square, and stripe structures can be formed respectively under rapid rotation. When the dipoles are polarized perpendicular to the rotation axis, the two components are generically phase separated into a kernel-shell structure due to the anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. While the giant-hole states are induced under slow rotation, the compensating stripe vortex structures are stabilized under fast rotation. In particular, a stripe-splitting structure is found to be competing with the stripe ones. These features are expected to be observed in the mixture of Cr-52 atoms in the two different spin states. Vortices in quantum droplets of heteronuclear Bose mixtures

Abstract:We have theoretically investigated the structure of spinning self-bound droplets made of a K41−Rb87 Bose mixture by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation including beyond-mean-field correction in the Lee-Huang-Yang form. The structure and energetics of vortex formation in the self-bound mixture have been elucidated, showing that the formation of linear vortices in the heavier species is energetically favored over other configurations. A fake (partially filled) core develops as a consequence in the other species, resulting in a hole which might be imaged in experiments. We computed the minimal size of K41−Rb87 droplets which can host stable vortex lines in their interior, which is important information for experiments aimed at the observation of vortices in such systems. The different role of quantized vortices and capillary waves, which are the two ways angular momentum can be stored in a swirling superfluid, is addressed in detail by computing the relation between angular momentum and rotational frequency. The results show intriguing similarities with the case of a prototypical superfluid, i.e., He4 droplets when set into rotation. A two-branches curve in the stability diagram, qualitatively similar to the one expected for classical (incompressible and viscous) rotating liquid droplets, is obtained when vortices are present in the droplets, while prolate (i.e., nonaxisymmetric) shapes are only permitted in vortex-free droplets. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.105.063328 ©2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:Creation of stable intrinsically anisotropic self-bound states with embedded vorticity is a challenging issue. Previously, no such states in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) or other physical settings were known. Dipolar BEC suggests a unique possibility to predict stable anisotropic vortex quantum droplets (AVQDs). We demonstrate that they can be created with the vortex' axis oriented \emph{perpendicular} to the polarization of dipoles. The stability area and characteristics of the AVQDs in the parameter space are revealed by means of analytical and numerical methods. Further, the rotation of the polarizing magnetic field is considered, and the largest angular velocities, up to which spinning AVQDs can follow the rotation in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions, are found. Collisions between moving AVQDs are studied too, demonstrating formation of bound states with a vortex-antivortex-vortex structure. A stability domain for such stationary bound states is identified. Unstable dipolar states, that can be readily implemented by means of phase imprinting, quickly transform into robust AVQDs, which suggests a straightforward possibility for the creation of these states in the experiment.

Abstract:Quantized vortices play an essential role in diverse superfluid phenomena. In a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, especially of two mass-imbalance species, such macroscopic quantum phenomena are particularly rich due to the interplay between the Bose and Fermi superfluidity. However, generating a Bose-Fermi two-species superfluid, producing coupled vortex lattices within, and further probing interspecies interaction effects remain challenging. Here, we experimentally realize a two-species superfluid with dilute gases of lithium-6 and potassium-41, having a mass ratio of about seven. By rotating the superfluid mixture, we simultaneously produce coupled vortex lattices of the two species and thus present a definitive visual evidence for the double superfluidity. Moreover, we report several unconventional behaviors, due to the Bose-Fermi interaction, on the formation and decay of two-species vortices.

Abstract:Vortices are found in a fermion system with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions, trapped by a rotating quasi-two-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential. Such systems have much in common with electrons in quantum dots, where rotation is induced via an external magnetic field. In contrast to the Coulomb interactions between electrons, the (externally tunable) anisotropy of the dipole-dipole interaction breaks the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. This may cause the otherwise rotationally symmetric exact wavefunction to reveal its internal structure more directly.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present an experimental study of the collective dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. The dynamics of the center-of-mass dipole oscillation is studied in a broad parameter region as a function of spin-orbit coupling parameters as well as the oscillation amplitude. The anharmonic properties beyond the effective-mass approximation are revealed, such as the amplitude-dependent frequency and finite oscillation frequency at a place with a divergent effective mass. These anharmonic behaviors agree quantitatively with variational wave-function calculations. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate a unique feature of the spin-orbit coupled system predicted by a sum-rule approach, stating that spin polarization susceptibility-a static physical quantity-can be measured via the dynamics of dipole oscillation. The divergence of polarization susceptibility is observed at the quantum phase transition that separates the magnetic nonzero-momentum condensate from the nonmagnetic zero-momentum phase. The good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results provides a benchmark for recently developed theoretical approaches.
Controlling quantum vortex dynamics and vortex-antivortex annihilation in Bose-Einstein condensates with optical lattices

Abstract:Superfluids with strong spatial modulation can be experimentally produced in the area of cold atoms under the influence of optical lattices. Here we address $^{87}$Rb bosons at T=0 K in a flat geometry under the influence of a periodic potential with the Gross-Pitaevskii theory. The statics and dynamics of vortex excitations are studied in the case of one dimensional (1D) and of two dimensional (2D) optical lattices, as function of the intensity of the optical lattice. We compute how the vortex energy depends on the position of its core and the energy barrier that a vortex has to surmount in order to move in the superfluid. The dynamics of a vortex dipole, a pair of vortices of opposite chirality, differ profoundly from the case of a uniform superfluid. In the 1D case, when parallel ridges of density are present, the dynamics depends on the positions of the two vortices. If they are in the same channel between two ridges, then the two vortices approach each other until they annihilate each other in a short time. If the two vortices are in distinct channels the dipole undergoes a rigid translation but with a velocity depending on the intensity of the optical lattice and this translation velocity can even change sign with respect to the case of the uniform superfluid. Superimposed on this translation an oscillatory motion is also present. These oscillatory motions can be both longitudinal, i.e. along the channel, as well as transverse. In all cases the transverse motions are one-side, in the sense that the vortex core never crosses the equilibrium position nearest the starting position. In the case of the 2D lattices we study (square, triangular and honeycomb), the two vortices of a dipole move mainly by jumps between equilibrium positions and approach each other until annihilation.

Making ghost vortices visible in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:Ghost vortices constitute an elusive class of topological excitations in quantum fluids since the relevant phase singularities fall within regions where the superfluid density is almost zero. Here we present a platform that allows for the controlled generation and observation of such vortices. Upon rotating an imbalanced mixture of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), one can obtain necklaces of real vortices in the majority component whose cores get filled by particles from the minority one. The wavefunction describing the state of the latter is shown to harbour a number of ghost vortices which are crucial to support the overall dynamics of the mixture. Their arrangement typically mirrors that of their real counterpart, hence resulting in a ``dual" ghost-vortex necklace, whose properties are thoroughly investigated in the present paper. We also present a viable experimental protocol for the direct observation of ghost vortices in a ${}^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ $+$ ${}^{39}\mathrm{K}$ ultracold mixture. Quenching the inter-component scattering length, some atoms are expelled from the vortex cores and, while diffusing, swirl around unpopulated phase singularities, thus turning them directly observable.

Abstract:The response of superfluids to the external rotation, evidenced by emergence of quantised vortices, distinguishes them from conventional fluids. In this work, we demonstrate that the number of vortices in a stirred polariton condensate depends on the characteristic size of the employed rotating potential induced by the nonresonant laser excitation. For smaller sizes, a single vortex with a topological charge of +-1 corresponding to the stirring direction is formed. However, for larger optical traps, clusters of two or three co-rotating vortices appear in the narrow range of GHz stirring speed.

Abstract:Vortex lattice patterns with transitions from regular to other variety vortex shapes are predicted in rotating binary mixtures of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in squared optical lattice. We focus our investigation in the experimentally accessible dipolar isotopes of dysprosium ($^{162,164}$Dy), erbium ($^{168}$Er), chromium ($^{52}$Cr), and rubidium ($^{87}$Rb), by considering the binary mixtures ($^{164}$Dy-$^{162}$Dy, $^{168}$Er-$^{164}$Dy, $^{164}$Dy-$^{52}$Cr and $^{164}$Dy-$^{87}$Rb), which are confined in strong pancake-shaped trap and loaded in squared two-dimensional optical lattices, where we vary the polarization angle of dipoles, the inter-species contact interactions and the rotation frequency. The ratio between inter- to intra-species contact interaction is used for altering the miscibility properties; with the polarization of the dipolar species used for tuning to repulsive or attractive the dipole-dipole interactions. For enough higher rotation, of particular interest is the regime when the inter- to intra-species scattering length is larger than one, in which a richer variety of vortex-lattice patterns are predicted, including vortex sheets and two-dimensional rotating droplet formations. The patterns can be controlled by changing the optical lattice parameters, as shown for the symmetric $^{164}$Dy-$^{162}$Dy dipolar mixture. For mixtures with stronger differences in the dipole moments, as $^{164}$Dy-$^{52}$Cr and $^{164}$Dy-$^{87}$Rb, only half quantum vortices and circular ones have been observed, which will depend on the dipole orientations.

Abstract:The superfluid mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi species is a remarkable many-body quantum system. Dilute degenerate atomic gases, especially for two species of distinct masses, are excellent candidates for exploring fundamental features of superfluid mixture. However, producing a mass-imbalance Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, providing an unambiguous visual proof of two-species superfluidity and probing inter-species interaction effects remain challenging. Here, we report the realization of a two-species superfluid of lithium-6 and potassium-41. By rotating the dilute gases, we observe the simultaneous existence of vortex lattices in both species, and thus present a definitive visual evidence for the simultaneous superfluidity of the two species. Pronounced effects of the inter-species interaction are demonstrated through a series of precision measurements on the formation and decay of two-species vortices. Our system provides a new platform for studying novel macroscopic quantum phenomena in vortex matter of interacting species.
Quantum droplets with magnetic vortices in spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:Motivated by the recent experimental realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of europium atoms, we investigate the self-bound droplet state of a europium BEC with spin degrees of freedom. Under a sufficiently weak magnetic field, the droplet has a torus shape with circulating spin vectors, which is referred to as a magnetic vortex. The ground state transforms from the torus to cigar shape through bistability with an increase in the magnetic field. Dynamical change of the magnetic field causes the torus to rotate due to the Einstein-de Haas effect. The magnetic vortices form a supersolid in a confined system.

Abstract:Quantum turbulence indicators in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed fluids, following emissions of vortex-antivortex pairs generated by a circularly moving detuned laser, are being provided by numerical simulations of the corresponding quasi-two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii formalism with repulsive contact interactions combined with tunable dipole-dipole strength. The critical velocities of two variants of a circularly moving obstacle are determined and analyzed for vortex-antivortex nucleation in the form of regular and cluster emissions. The turbulent dynamical behavior is predicted to follow closely the initial emission of vortex-antivortex pairs, relying on the expected Kolmogorov's classical scaling law, which is verified by the spectral analysis of the incompressible part of the kinetic energy. Within our aim to provide further support in the up-to-now investigations of quantum turbulence, which have been focused on non-dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, we emphasize the role of dipole-dipole interactions in the fluid dynamics.

Superfluid excitations in rotating two-dimensional ring traps

Abstract:We studied a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate confined in ring trap configurations that can be produced starting with a bubble trap confinement, approximated by a Mexican hat and shifted harmonic oscillator potentials. Using a variational technique and perturbation theory, we determined the vortex configurations in this system by varying the interparticle interaction and the angular velocity of the atomic cloud. We found that the phase diagram of the system has macrovortex structures for small positive values of the interaction parameter, and the charge of the central vortex increases with rotation. Strengthening the atomic interaction makes the macrovortex unstable, and it decays into multiple singly-charged vortices that arrange themselves in a lattice configuration. We also look for experimentally realizable methods to determine the vortex configuration without relying upon absorption imaging since the structures are not always visible in the latter. More specifically, we study how the vortex distribution affects the collective modes of the condensate by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically and by analytical predictions using the sum-rule approach for the frequencies of the modes. These results reveal important signatures to characterize the macrovortices and vortex lattice transitions in the experiments.

Abstract:We investigate a spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensate containing both dipolar and non-dipolar components. Combined with Rashba spin–orbit coupling, the competition between contact and dipolar interaction reveals four distinctive exotic phases: droplet lattice phase, stripe phase, oblique stripe phase, and labyrinthine stripe phase. In particular, we adopt a condensate order parameter ansatz to characterize the superstripe phase in a harmonic trap through minimizing the analytical total energy. Furthermore, we find that the energy analysis of the dipolar condensate in the trap uncovers a higher order transition from lattice to stripe phases when contact interaction increases. Our results demonstrate the possibility for physicists to realize a wealth of controllable configurations in spin–orbit coupled dipolar condensates, including droplet lattice with topology and superstripe adjusted by changing the strength of contact and dipolar interactions. The topological phases we predict in this work can be realized by using state-of-the-art techniques in ultracold atomic experiments of chromium, erbium, or dysprosium condensates.

Einstein-Bose condensation of Onsager vortices

Abstract:We have studied statistical mechanics of a gas of vortices in two dimensions. We introduce a new observable---a condensate fraction of Onsager vortices---to quantify the emergence of the vortex condensate. The condensation of Onsager vortices is most transparently observed in a single vortex species system and occurs due to a competition between solid body rotation (c.f. vortex lattice) and potential flow (c.f. multiple quantum vortex state). We propose an experiment to observe the condensation transition of the vortices in such a single vortex species system.

Revealing Unconventional Properties of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate from Collective Dipole Oscillation

Abstract:Interaction between matter field and gauge field plays a fundamental role in many areas of physics. Recently, a non-abelian gauge field has been successfully synthesized in laboratory for ultracold neutral bosonic atoms, yielding the coupling between the pseudo-spin of an atom and its orbital motion. This new superfluid has many unconventional properties remaining to be explored. Here we study the collective oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. We find that the frequency of dipole oscillation deviates from the harmonic trap frequency and depends on the oscillation amplitude. Such an unharmonic behavior reveals the nonabelain character of the gauge field. We also observe that a magnetization oscillation is induced by the dipole motion, as a manifestation of the absence of the Galilean invariance of this system. We develop a variational wave-function method that well describes the dipole oscillation, except in the regime with two degenerate single-particle energy minima separated by a low barrier. In this regime, since the harmonic trapping potential plays an analogous role as kinetic energy in a real-space double-well potential, macroscopic quantum tunneling in momentum space is observed in the dipole oscillation.
