Abstract:The alkali metal cation strongly influences the electrochemical activity of decarboxylation of acetic acid. Non‐covalent interactions of the alkali metal cations with surface intermediates influence the formation of the acetate layer on the electrode surface being a prerequisite of Kolbe electrolysis. Rotating ring disc electrode analysis highlights the significant dependency of acetate coverage and pH on the identity of the alkali metal cation present in the supporting electrolyte. Despite its influence at low current densities, the cation effect is negligible at high current densities. Electrochemical decarboxylation of carboxylic acids is considered a sustainable method to improve the quality of pyrolysis oil. In this study, we assess the effect of monovalent alkali cations (of the acetates) on the performance of Pt electrodes in acid decarboxylation and the competing OER, using various electrochemical methods. We reveal a strong cation dependence generally following the trend Li+
