Abstract:A new lattice Boltzmann method for simulating multiphase flows is developed theoretically. The method is adjusted such that its continuum limit is the Navier-Stokes equation, with a driving force derived from the Cahn-Hilliard free energy. In contrast to previous work, however, the bulk and interface terms are decoupled, the former being incorporated into the model through the local equilibrium populations, and the latter through a forcing term. We focus on gas-liquid phase equilibria with the possibility to implement an arbitrary equation of state. The most novel aspect of our approach is a systematic Chapman-Enskog expansion up to the third order. Due to the third-order gradient in the interface forcing term, this is needed for full consistency with both hydrodynamics and thermodynamics. Our construction of a model that satisfies all conditions is based upon previous work by Chen, Goldhirsch, and Orszag (J. Sci. Comp. 34, 87 (2008)), and implies 59 and 21 velocities in three and two dimensions, respectively. Applying the conditions of positivity of weights, existence of a two-phase region in the phase diagram, and positivity of the bulk viscosity, we find substantial restrictions on the permitted equation of state, which can only be lifted by an even more refined model. Moreover, it turns out that it is necessary to solve a self-consistent equation for the hydrodynamic flow velocity, in order to enforce the identity of momentum density and mass current on the lattice. The analysis completely identifies all spurious terms in the Navier-Stokes equation, and thus shows how to systematically eliminate each of them, by constructing a suitable collision operator. Phase-field-based Lattice Boltzmann Finite-Difference Model for Simulating Thermocapillary Flows

Abstract:A phase-field-based hybrid model that combines the lattice Boltzmann method with the finite difference method is proposed for simulating immiscible thermocapillary flows with variable fluid-property ratios. Using a phase field methodology, an interfacial force formula is analytically derived to model the interfacial tension force and the Marangoni stress. We present an improved lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) method to capture the interface between different phases and solve the pressure and velocity fields, which can recover the correct Cahn-Hilliard equation (CHE) and Navier-Stokes equations. The LBE method allows not only use of variable mobility in the CHE, but also simulation of multiphase flows with high density ratio because a stable discretization scheme is used for calculating the derivative terms in forcing terms. An additional convection-diffusion equation is solved by the finite difference method for spatial discretization and the Runge-Kutta method for time marching to obtain the temperature field, which is coupled to the interfacial tension through an equation of state. The model is first validated against analytical solutions for the thermocapillary driven convection in two superimposed fluids at negligibly small Reynolds and Marangoni numbers. It is then used to simulate thermocapillary migration of a three-dimensional deformable droplet and bubble at various Marangoni numbers and density ratios, and satisfactory agreement is obtained between numerical results and theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Chemical potential is an effective way to drive phase transition or express wettability. In this letter, we present a chemical-potential-based lattice Boltzmann model to simulate multiphase flows. The nonideal force is directly evaluated by a chemical potential. The model theoretically satisfies thermodynamics and Galilean invariance. The computational efficiency is improved owing to avoiding the calculation of pressure tensor. We have derived several chemical potentials of the popular equations of state from the free-energy density function. An effective chemical-potential boundary condition is implemented to investigate the wettability of a solid surface. Remarkably, the numerical results show that the contact angle can be linearly tuned by the surface chemical potential.

Abstract:A variable-scale lattice gas automata model for gas-solid two-phase flow is established based on lattice gas automata(LGA) in which macroscopic behavior is described with microscopic gas-solid interactions.A two-dimensional flow field is divided into two-deck hexagon lattices with different scales,where solid particles and gas pseudo-particles are aligned in lattices for solid and gas respectively.In addition to basic LGA rules,collision and propagation rules are specifically designed for gas-solid systems,as well as additional evolution rules.A statistical method of macroscopic properties and conversion between model parameters and hydrodynamic properties based on similarity principle are established.Simulations of dynamic behaviors of gas-solid two-phase flow in a bubbling fluidized bed with this model show good agreement with experiments as well as simulation results with a two-fluid model.It has less average deviation,which validates the proposed model.

Abstract:Based on phase-field theory, we develop a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for liquid-gas-solid flow from multiphase and particle dynamics algorithms. A modified bounce-back method is developed for the velocity-based LB approach. A curved boundary treatment with second-order accuracy based on velocity interpolation is developed. We propose a predictor-corrector scheme algorithm for specifying the three-phase contact angle on curved boundaries within the framework of structured Cartesian grids. In order to make the algorithm more stable, we combine the implicit particle velocity update scheme and the Galilean invariant momentum exchange method. The proposed method is validated through several single- and multicomponent fluid test cases. It was found the surface tension force associated with the interface acting on the solid structures can be captured. We simulate the sinking of a circular cylinder due to gravity, the numerical results agree well with the experimental data. Finally, we apply the method to the self-assembly process of multiple floating cylinders on water surface.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to develop a thermodynamically consistent diffuse interface model for two-phase multicomponent fluids with partial miscibility based on the second law of thermodynamics . The resulting governing equations consist of the Allen-Cahn equation for the order parameter representing the phase volume fraction, the Cahn-Hilliard equation for the molar fraction of each component in the mixture, and the full Navis-Stokes equations coupled with the surface tension force for the velocity and pressure fields. Compared with the previous models, both the phase interface and the molar concentration can be captured simultaneously, and the derived governing equations guarantee thermodynamic consistency. Then, a lattice Boltzmann method is presented to numerically solve the proposed mathematical model. Several numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the capabilities of the developed model.

Abstract:A new lattice Boltzmann model based on SC model, is proposed to describe the liquid-vapor phase transitions. The new model is validated through the simulation of the one-component phase transition process. Compared with the simulation results of van der Waals gas and the Maxwell equal-area construction, the results of the new model have a better agreement with the analytical solutions than those of SC and Zhang models. Since the obtained temperature range and the maximum density ratio in this model are expanded, and the magnitude of maximum spurious current is only between those of SC and Zhang models, it is believed that this new model has better stability than SC and Zhang models. Consequently, the application scope of this new model is expanded compared with the existing phase transition models. According to the principle of the corresponding states in engineering thermodynamics, the simulations of ammonia and water phase transition process were implemented using this new model with different equations of state. Compared with the experimental data of ammonia and water, the results show that the Peng-Robinson is the best equation of state to describe the phase transition process of ammonia and water. Especially, the simulation results of ammonia with Peng-Robinson equation of state have an excellent agreement with its experimental data. Therefore these simulation results have a significant influence on the real engineering applications.

Abstract:On the basis of phase-field theory, we develop a simple lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for liquid-vapor-solid flow with thermal phase change, which is able to deal with large fluid density contrasts. The conservative Allen-Cahn equation and Navier-Stokes equations are modified to take into account the phase change effects based on the Stefan boundary condition. Three distribution functions are used in the model, one of which is to track the interface among the fluids, one is employed for the fluid hydrodynamics, and the other one is utilized to solve the heat equation. The LB evolution equations are incorporated with proper source terms such that the modified interface tracking equation and hydrodynamic equations can be derived exactly. The proposed model for phase change is much simpler than the previous phase-field LB models. Combining with particle dynamics algorithms, the present model can further simulate liquid-vapor-solid systems with phase change. Several numerical tests, including the one-dimensional Stefan problem and droplet evaporation, have been performed to test the accuracy and stability of the present model, and the results obtained by this approach are in good agreement with the theory. Evaporation of a droplet wetting on a particle is simulated, it is found the fluid-solid interaction associated with the interface can be captured. Finally, as an application, the motion and growth of a rising vapor bubble with a particle through a superheated liquid is investigated.

Abstract:In previous work, we have developed a close-packed lattice model for binary solutions of chain-like molecules. As a continuation, considering the effect of volume change, we present here a new molecular-thermodynamic model based on lattice fluid theory. The resulting equation of state shows good performance in describing thermodynamic properties such as pVT behavior, vapor pressure and liquid volume of pure normal fluids. Equation-of-state parameters are obtained by correlation of experimental data. The model is extended to calculate vapor–liquid equilibria of binary mixtures with only one binary interaction parameter. Comparison between the present model and other theories is also presented.

Abstract:A lattice Boltzmann model to simulate phase separation and two-phase flow is proposed. The nonideal force in multiphase flow is directly computed from the free energy. Thermodynamic consistency and Galilean invariance are theoretically analyzed and numerically verified. Remarkably, the theoretical simplicity endues the model with the advantages of high efficiency and easy implementation. We also find that it can work well together with various equations of state in order to simulate different kinds of multiphase flows. Abstract:The chemical potential is an important thermodynamic parameter during irreversible phase changes. Mass is always transferred from the phase with the higher chemical potential to the lower. The chemical potential can help describe non-equilibrium behavior to reveal phase change mechanism. This paper proposes a method to calculate the chemical potential in the phase change process using the pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann model. It is a new way to understand the phase change mechanism based on the non-equilibrium thermodynamic principle. The results show that the chemical potential varies during the phase change process. In the droplet evaporation process, the chemical potential inside the droplet is higher than that of vapor, and an apparent chemical potential gradient is found at the gas-liquid interface. When the gas superheat increases from 0.09Ts to 0.13Ts, the maximum chemical potential gradient near the phase interface increases by 39%. In the bubble growth process, apparent chemical potential gradients appear at the gas-liquid interface and the nucleation site. The chemical potential gradient at the gas-liquid interface decreases with time. The chemical potential gradient at the nucleation site for the superheat of 0.18Ts is 2.55 times greater than that for the superheat of 0.16Ts. Meanwhile, it is found that the region where the phase change occurs coincides with the region where the chemical potential gradient is large.

Abstract:Molecular thermodynamic models based on lattice framework have been widely applied to study the thermodynamic properties and the phase behaviors of chain-like fluids. Recently, we have developed a new molecular thermodynamic model by combining statistical mechanics theory with computer simulation. The effects of branching, coordination number, chain stiffness, composition, hydrogen bonding and pressure on thermodynamic properties and phase behaviors can be well described by the new model. Satisfactory agreement is obtained between the predicted results and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation data for multicomponent Ising and Flory-Huggins lattice systems. The model can be used to satisfactorily correlate phase equilibria including vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria for the mixtures of ordinary fluids, polymers, and ionic liquids. Incorporated with density functional theory (DFT) for nonuniform fluids and weighted-density approximation (WDA), the model can also be used to describe the adsorption of polymer at solid-liquid interface and conformation distributions at interfacial regions. For the morphologies of micro-phase separation of diblock copolymers confined in curved surfaces, a framework has been developed based on the strong segregation limit (SSL) theory. The SSL predictions agree well with simulation and experimental results on multilayer transitions. Upon comparison between theoretical predictions and MC simulations, we have established a numerical calculation method of the Helmholtz energy for a special structure called the complex multilayered sector column (CMSC) structure. Finally, the detailed theoretical studies together with simulations indicate that the CMSC structure tends to be formed at higher thickness, while the mutually competing concentric cylinder barrel and the sector column structures appear at lower thickness.
A fugacity-based Lattice Boltzmann method for multicomponent multiphase systems

Abstract:The free energy model can extend the Lattice Boltzmann method to multiphase systems. However, there is a lack of models capable of simulating multicomponent multiphase fluids with partial miscibility. In addition, existing models cannot be generalized to honor thermodynamic information provided by any multicomponent equation of state of choice. In this paper, we introduce a free energy Lattice Boltzmann model where the forcing term is determined by the fugacity of the species, the thermodynamic property that connects species partial pressure to chemical potential calculations. By doing so, we are able to carry out multicomponent multiphase simulations of partially miscible fluids and generalize the methodology for use with any multicomponent equation of state of interest. We test this fugacity-based Lattice Boltzmann method for the cases of vapor-liquid equilibrium for two and three-component mixtures in various temperature and pressure conditions. We demonstrate that the model is able to reliably reproduce phase densities and compositions as predicted by multicomponent thermodynamics and can reproduce different characteristic pressure-composition and temperature-composition envelopes with a high degree of accuracy. We also demonstrate that the model can offer accurate predictions under dynamic conditions.

Abstract:This paper proposes a simple and accurate lattice Boltzmann model for simulating thermocapillary flows, which is able to deal with thermophysical parameters contrasts. In this model, two lattice Boltzmann equations are utilized to solve the conservative Allen-Cahn equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while another lattice Boltzmann equation is used for solving the temperature field, where the collision term is delicately designed such that the influence of the thermophysical parameters contrasts is incorporated. In contrast to previous lattice Boltzmann model for thermocapillary flows, the most distinct feature of the current model is that the forcing term used in the present thermal lattice Boltzmann equation is not needed to calculate space derivatives of the heat capacitance or the order parameter, making the scheme much simpler and also possible to retain the main merits of the lattice Boltzmann method. The developed model is firstly validated by considering the thermocapillary flows in a heated microchannel with two superimposed planar fluids. It is then used to simulate thermocapillary migration of a two-dimensional deformable droplet, and its accuracy is once again consistent with the theoretical prediction when the Marangoni number approaches zero. Finally, we numerically study the motion of two recalcitrant bubbles in a two-dimensional channel where the relationship between surface tension and temperature is assumed to be a parabolic function. It is found that owing to the competing between the inertia and thermal effects, the bubbles are able to move against the liquid's bulk motion and towards areas with low surface tension.

Abstract:Multiphase flow phenomena are ubiquitous in real-life applications, and the pseudopotential-based lattice Boltzmann multiphase simulation method has gained extensive usage in fields such as fuel cells, energy storage materials, and boiling heat transfer. Over the past two decades, significant improvements have been made to the pseudopotential model. These advancements have greatly enhanced its accuracy in simulating various processes. In this paper, we employ a numerical stability-based unit conversion scheme to ensure an accurate representation of real-world material properties. Additionally, we introduce a more precise non-ideal two-parameter gas state equation Modified Peng-Robinson (MPR) that closely aligns with experimental data, surpassing the commonly used single-parameter Peng-Robinson state equations. Furthermore, we compare the accuracy of the two-state equations for polar and non-polar substances, finding improved accuracy for non-polar substances and a higher degree of fidelity for polar substances when using the MPR equation. We analyze the constant correction coefficients chosen for thermodynamic consistency regulation from the perspectives of vapor-liquid interface thickness and numerical stability, both when held constant and when employing a dynamic correction approach that balances vapor-liquid interface width, numerical stability, and thermodynamic consistency. Finally, we validate to ensure its practical applicability.

Abstract:Coupled heat transfer and chemical reaction of fluid flow in complex boundaries are explored by introducing two additional properties, i.e. particle type and energy state into the Lattice gas automata (LGA) Frisch–Hasslacher–Pomeau (FHP-II) model. A mix-redistribute of energy and type of particles is also applied on top of collision rules to ensure randomness while maintaining the conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Simulations of heat transfer and heterogeneous reaction of gas flow passing a circular porous cylinder in a channel are presented. The effects of porosity of cylinder, gas inlet velocity, and reaction probability on the reaction process are further analyzed with respect to the characteristics of solid morphology, product concentration, and temperature profile. Numerical results indicate that the reaction rate increases with increasing reaction probability as well as gas inlet velocity. Cylinders with a higher value of porosity and more homogeneous structure also react with gas particles faster. These results agree well with the basic theories of gas–solid reactions, indicating the present model provides a method for describing gas–solid reactions in complex boundaries at mesoscopic level.

Abstract:Understanding and predicting the dynamics of complex fluid systems including liquid–liquid phase separation, relevant to both biological and engineered applications, typically uses a nonideal free energy. Introducing such a thermodynamic constraint into the Lattice-Boltzmann Method can be accomplished by altering either the equilibrium distribution function or the external force. The former requires a lengthy parameterization for a free energy of multiple independent variables which becomes cumbersome for more than three components. The latter has been done for a multicomponent compressible system, but a correction term for the force is required to recover the expected conservation equations. This work builds upon the incompressible single component forcing method from He et al. (Journal of Computational Physics, Vol. 152, No. 2, 1999) by deriving and implementing the required force needed to successfully recover the expected mass conservation from a nonideal free energy with an arbitrary number of components. This allows the simulation of more realistic phase separating fluid systems by including many interacting components, which is demonstrated here for up to five components and phases.

Abstract:In this paper a generalized conservative phase field-lattice Boltzmann model is proposed for immiscible incompressible flows with any number of components. In this phase field model, the each phase field variable satisfies a generalized eikonal equation and the volume fraction constraint. By introducing a quadratic functional, the dynamics of phase field variables can be treated as a gradient flow method. The phase field equations are reformulated based on the mass conservative law and the reduction-consistency conditions. Moreover, based on the generalized free energy functional, a family of generalized continuous surface tension force formulations is deduced by using the virtual work method. A lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) is developed to solve the generalized conservative phase field equations and the hydrodynamics equations. In the numerical simulation section, the motion of circular interfaces and Poiseuille flow with four phases are simulated first. The convergence rate and reduction-consistent of present model for the phase field equations are validated. The computational accuracy of present model for the hydrodynamics equations is also validated. Then serval two-dimensional (2D) examples with pairwise surface tension effect, including the droplets immersed in another fluid with four fluid phases, spreading of liquid lenses and spinodal decomposition with four fluid phases, are simulated. The obtained numerical results are in good agreement with the analytical solutions. Four continuous surface tension force formulations are also comparative studied.
