Abstract:We present a novel lattice Boltzmann method that has a capability of simulating thermodynamic multiphase flows. This approach is fully thermodynamically consistent at the macroscopic level. Using this new method, a liquid-vapor boiling process, including liquid-vapor formation and coalescence together with a full coupling of temperature, is simulated for the first time.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the challenge of simulating thermodynamic multiphase flows (such as the liquid - gas boiling process) in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Although the existing Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) has achieved certain success in simulating multiphase flows, these methods are usually limited to scenarios where the influence of temperature dynamics can be ignored or is unimportant. This means that the current methods cannot effectively handle multiphase flow problems involving strong thermodynamic coupling, such as the complex flows from the common water - boiling process to applications in thermonuclear reactors. Therefore, the goal of the paper is to extend the existing LBM so that it can comprehensively simulate thermodynamic multiphase flows that include temperature dynamic changes, thereby providing a more general and powerful tool to study such complex flow phenomena.
