Abstract:Particulate materials exhibit rich dynamic behaviour and have been studied extensively in the recent decades. Underpinning this behaviour are the interactions between particles, such as the contact forces and the long-range non-contact forces (e.g., van der Waals force, capillary force and electrostatic force). Understanding these interactions is the key to elucidating the particulate systems as well as designing and controlling the relevant processes. In this paper, we firstly review the recent advances in the basic interaction laws between particles obtained using numerical methods ranging from atomic to continuum scales. Then the effects of the friction and adhesion on particle packing, particle flow, mixing, fracture, and particle reinforcement in composites are discussed. Finally, we discuss the multidisciplinary work to be done in future.

Annual Review of Physical Chemistry

Abstract:The phase state of aerosol particles can impact numerous atmospheric processes, including new particle growth, heterogeneous chemistry, cloud condensation nucleus formation, and ice nucleation. In this article, the phase transitions of inorganic, organic, and organic/inorganic aerosol particles are discussed, with particular focus on liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). The physical chemistry that determines whether LLPS occurs, at what relative humidity it occurs, and the resultant particle morphology is explained using both theoretical and experimental methods. The known impacts of LLPS on aerosol processes in the atmosphere are discussed. Finally, potential evidence for LLPS from field and chamber studies is presented. By understanding the physical chemistry of the phase transitions of aerosol particles, we will acquire a better understanding of aerosol processes, which in turn impact human health and climate. Phase Behaviors of Soft-core Particle Systems

Abstract:This paper reviews some of our recent works on phase behaviors of particulate systems with a soft-core interaction potential. The potential is purely repulsive and bounded, i.e., it is finite even when two particles completely overlap. The one-sided linear spring (harmonic) potential is one of the representatives. This model system has been successively employed to study the jamming transition, i.e., the formation of rigid and disordered packings of hard particles, and establish the jamming physics. This is actually based on the “hard” aspect of the potential, because at low densities and when particle overlap is tiny the potential resembles the hard sphere limit. At high densities, the potential exhibits its “soft” aspect: with the increase of density, there are successive reentrant crystallizations with many types of solid phases. Taking advantage of the dual nature of the potential, we investigate the criticality of the jamming transition from different perspectives, extend the jamming scenario to high densities, reveal the novel density evolution of two-dimensional melting, and find unexpected formation of quasicrystals. It is surprising that such a simple potential can exhibit so rich and unexpected phenomena in phase transitions. The phase behaviors discussed in this paper are also highly regarded in polymer science, which may thus shed light on our understanding of polymeric systems or inspire new ideas in studies of polymers.

Abstract:Background: Ordinary life as we knew it changed in March of 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. While springtime in general was well awaited and regarded as a synonym for rejuvenation, March of 2020 on the other hand brought lock-down, curfews, home working and digital education to the lives of many. The particle physics community was not an exception: research institutes and universities introduced remote working and digital lecturing and all workshops, conferences and summer schools were cancelled, got postponed or took place online. Methods: Using publicly available data from the INSPIRE and arXiv databases we investigate the effects of this dramatic change of life to the publishing trends of the high-energy physics community with an emphasis on particle phenomenology, theory and CERN’s two major LHC experiments, ATLAS and CMS. To get insights, we gather information about publishing trends in the last 20 years, ending by December 2021, and analyse it in detail. Results: Our analysis revealed that the publishing trend in particle physics was only been affected in a minor way. Conclusions: Publication data show that difficult times were successfully overcome and that the community even increased scientific output.

Abstract:The particles on demand method [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 121 , 130602 (2018)] was recently formulated with a conservative finite-volume discretization and validated against challenging benchmarks. In this work, we focus on the properties of the reference frame transformation and its implications on the accuracy of the model. Based on these considerations, we propose strategies that simplify the scheme and generalize it to include a tunable Prandtl number via quasi-equilibrium relaxation. Finally, we adapt concepts from the multiscale semi-Lagrangian lattice Boltzmann formulation to the proposed framework, further improving the potential and the operating range of the kinetic model.
