Two-dimensional materials as ideal substrates for molecular quantum emitters

Abstract:The generation and manipulation of non-classical light states is central to emerging quantum technologies. Color centers in insulating crystals have been extensively studied for single-photon generation, but organic molecules immobilized on substrates have gained attention due to their superior scalability, large oscillator strengths, and tunable emission frequency. Here, we use first principles calculations to investigate the photoemission spectrum of organic molecules adsorbed on various 2D materials. Machine learning interatomic potentials are combined with density functional theory to accelerate the search for stable adsorption configurations. The calculated zero phonon line (ZPL) energies and emission lineshapes show excellent agreement with experiments. Our results indicate that the 2D substrate couples weakly to the molecular transitions and that emission characteristics are almost universal across different substrates. The unique effect of the 2D substrate is to introduce a sharp sideband(s) near the ZPL as a fingerprint of hindered rotational and translational modes of the molecule.

Abstract:A fascinating photonic platform with a small device scale, fast operating speed, as well as low energy consumption is two-dimensional (2D) materials, thanks to their in-plane crystalline structures and out-of-plane quantum confinement. The key to further advancement in this research field is the ability to modify the optical properties of the 2D materials. The modifications typically come from the materials themselves, for example, altering their chemical compositions. This article reviews a comparably less explored but promising means, through engineering the photonic surroundings. Rather than modifying materials themselves, this means manipulates the dielectric and metallic environments, both uniform and nanostructured, that directly interact with the materials. For 2D materials that are only one or a few atoms thick, the interaction with the environment can be remarkably efficient. This review summarizes the three degrees of freedom of this interaction: weak coupling, strong coupling, and multifunctionality. In addition, it reviews a relatively timing concept of engineering that directly applied to the 2D materials by patterning. Benefiting from the burgeoning development of nanophotonics, the engineering of photonic environments provides a versatile and creative methodology of reshaping light–matter interaction in 2D materials.

Extremely‐Fine Color Printing by 2D Materials with the Synergetic Effects of Fabry–Pérot Cavity and Exciton Absorption

Abstract:Structural colors based on plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures have become attractive alternatives over adsorbed dyes or pigments in high resolution color printing. The color resolution is determined by the fine‐tuning in optical resonance peak of the nanoresonators, and is strongly restricted by the limited geometrical dimensions. Here, 2D materials including MoS 2 and GaSe are demonstrated as unique materials which generate full color gamut, vivid, and extremely‐fine tuning colors. Attributed to the atomic thickness change in Fabry–Pérot cavity length and exciton‐induced additional absorption, the optical resonance peak could be tuned in the subnanometer level. As a result, the converted xy values from the reflection spectra on the CIE 1931 diagram show an average step of 0.0019 (0.0052) along x ‐axis ( y ‐axis), with a resolution an order of magnitude higher than current plasmonic and dielectric nanoresonators. The suitability of 2D materials on submicrometer color printing is further demonstrated by fabricating color patterns using GaSe flakes and the printed image has resolutions of 50 800 lines‐per‐inch (LPI) and 25 400 dots‐per‐inch (DPI) without color mixing. The color patterns are selectively recognized by different visible light with a wavelength resolution of 20 nm. 2D materials provide new platforms for high‐resolution printing, anticounterfeiting, and high‐density spectrally encoded storage.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D)functional materials(2DFMs)are ma-terials with 2D features and fascinating physical properties for various applications.The large diameter-length ratio gives them unprecedented property compared to their bulky states.A free surface state,unsaturated active site,flexible light-matter inter-action and the strong quantum Hall effect make 2DFMs optimal for many emerging issues.Over the past two decades,tremen-dous work has been done on the synthesis,characterization and application of 2DFMs.Among this research,seminal work ap-peared in 2004.In a typical experiment,Geim and Novoselov ex-foliated monolayer graphene from bulky graphite,which greatly boosted the enthusiasm for research into 2DFMs[1].Since then,this subject has become a central issue in physical science and will continue to be a bustling topic in the future.Materi-als with 2D layered structures,such as hexagonal-boron nitride(h-BN),MoS2,metal halides,MXenes,MOFs and COFs,have been synthesized and investigated in a series of domains.These fields cover efficient photonics,gas sensing and separation,an-tiviral protection and detection,energy conversion and storage,and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The electronic structure of a material is the key factor to determine its electronic, magnetic, and optical properties. As an advanced technique to directly observe the electronic structure, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been widely used for studying the fundamental physical and chemical properties of a material. In recent years, enormous two-dimensional (2D) materials with outstanding performances have been continually discovered, promising for future applications in optoelectronic, electronic, and spintronic devices. In this review article, we briefly introduce the basic components and principles of an ARPES system, and review the frontier progress of the ARPES studies on the electronic structures and fundamental physical properties of 2D materials. The 2D materials reviewed in this article can be categorized in four parts: graphene, h-BN, single element 2D materials, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Among them, the ARPES results on graphene are the most fruitful, and have stimulated the expanding researches on the other 2D materials. In present, the studies on 2D van der Waals heterostructures have attracted great attention. We also include some ARPES studies on 2D stacking heterostructures.

Abstract:The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) hyperbolic materials, characterized by opposite-sign optical conductivities along two orthogonal axes within a specific band (known as the hyperbolic region), opens an avenue for optical device engineering. Broadening the hyperbolic region is essential for cutting-edge photonic applications. In this study, based on a correlation between the hyperbolic region and anisotropic electronic structures, we propose a strategic framework for identifying 2D natural hyperbolic materials (NHMs) with broadband hyperbolicity. Using this framework, we engineered a 2D lattice incorporating p and d orbitals, and discovered a series of 2D NHMs, MYZ (M = Co, Pd, Ru, Rh; Y= S, Se, Te; and Z = Cl, Br, I). These materials exhibit broadband hyperbolicity that extends from the near-infrared to the visible-light spectrum. We have confirmed the directional propagation of surface plasmon polaritons on these 2D materials based on Maxwell's equations. Our findings pave the way for future exploration and practical deployment of 2D NHMs in advanced technological applications.

Abstract:Heterostructures, such as van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, provide a versatile platform for engineering the physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, spanning electronics, mechanics, optics, as well as electron-phonon couplings. Furthermore, vdW heterostructures, which are composed of metal/semiconductor or semiconductor/semiconductor combinations, not only maintain the unique properties of their individual constituents but also exhibit tunable physical and chemical properties that can be externally adjusted through strain, heat, and electric fields. These externally tunable properties offer significant advances in the fields of solid-state devices and renewable energy applications. Additionally, 2D material-based heterostructures, such as those composed of 0D clusters or quantum dots, as well as 1D nanotubes/wires in combination with 2D materials, also show immense potential for advancing next-generation nanodevices. The vast design space of vdW heterostructures enables their versatile applications spanning numerous fields, such as light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, photocatalysis, solar cells, photodetectors, and so on. In the Special Issue of Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, entitled "Two-dimensional Materials-based Heterostructures for Next-generation Nanodevices", we have gathered a comprehensive collection of 14 articles, presenting the latest achievements in the fields of designing novel 2D materials and 2D heterostructures. Below, we have briefly condensed the essential research findings from these studies.
