Abstract:There are significant challenges to design acoustic metasurface in the ultrasonic regime where the wavelength is small. Moreover, the routine design rule based on effective medium approximation is invalid for underwater ultrasound. Our recent development of metasurface provides a great opportunity to solve above-mentioned challenges and the results demonstrate the great potential to apply this metasurface in the field of ultrasonic focusing. Here, we presented a focusing metasurface lens with extreme simplicity (slot structure) and ultra-compact size (deep-subwavelength spacing and thickness). Instead of tuning the acoustic path length individually, we exploited the strong wave couplings between the deep-subwavelength-spaced units for the phase modulation. A microscopic coupled-wave theory was used to predict the phase profile, based on which the metasurface lens for ultrasonic focusing was optimized. Particularly, broadband focusing was also exhibited due to the non-resonant arrangement of the proposed metasurface lens. The numerical and experimental results agreed well with each other, effectively validating the feasibility of the proposed metasurface lens. The proposed approach provides a feasible avenue for the design of simple and ultra-compact ultrasonic lenses that would be suitable in various fields of ultrasonics.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities in manipulating light with ultrathin and flat architectures. Although great progress has been made in the metasurface designs and function demonstrations, most metalenses still only work as a substitution of conventional lenses in optical settings,whose integration advantage is rarely manifested. We propose a highly integrated imaging device with silicon metalenses directly mounted on a complementary metal oxide semiconductor image sensor, whose working distance is in hundreds of micrometers. The imaging performances including resolution, signal-to-noise ratio,and field of view（FOV） are investigated. Moreover, we develop a metalens array with polarization-multiplexed dual-phase design for a wide-field microscopic imaging. This approach remarkably expands the FOV without reducing the resolution, which promises a non-limited space-bandwidth product imaging for wide-field microscopy. As a result, we demonstrate a centimeter-scale prototype for microscopic imaging, showing uniqueness of meta-design for compact integration.

Abstract:The ever-growing demand for miniaturized optical systems presents a significant challenge in revolutionizing their core element – the varifocal lens. Recent advancements in ultra-thin, tunable metasurface optics have introduced new approaches to achieving zoom imaging. However, current varifocal metalens have faced challenges such as low focusing efficiency, limited tunability, and complicated designs. Here, we employ the high-contrast transmit arrays (HCTA) structures to design and fabricate a polarization-independent, single-layer flexible metalens that operates at a wavelength of 940 nm. Using a uniform stretching system, we characterized its optical performance to achieve over 60 % focusing efficiency within a 0 %–25 % stretch range, while the focal length changes align with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, our research also successfully demonstrated the capacity of a metalens with a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.5 to efficiently adjust imaging magnification within a 2× range, achieving imaging results that approach the diffraction limit. This research offers promising prospects for the practical use of compact and miniaturized optoelectronic devices in fields like photography, mixed reality, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Three-mirror-anastigmat (TMA) telescopes have been widely used in long-focal length payloads especially in space due to its excellent features for correcting aberrations, wide spectral range and shorter physical requirement. This paper describes the assembly results of the telescope that may be used in the payload of Formosat-5 follow-on mission. The telescope was a pathfinding one that was designed according to the target specifications of National Space Organization. Optical design is of Korsch type with three mirrors in the system, which is different from that in Formosat-5 RSI. Mechanical design and assembly procedures require modification from those of Formosat-5 accordingly. focal length of the telescope was 7714 mm and F-number 14. Diamond-turned aluminum mirrors were adopted due to time and budget constraint. Barrel was selected as structure configuration between primary and secondary mirrors, while struts were designed to support the tertiary mirror. A main plate was used to connect the barrel and struts. Analysis of the structure has been performed.

Abstract:To build a long-wave infrared catadioptric optical system for deep space low-temperature target detection with a lightweight and wide field of view, this work conducted a study that encompasses a local cooling optical system, topology optimization-based metal mirror design, and additive manufacturing. First, a compact catadioptric optical system with local cooling was designed. This system features a 55 mm aperture, a 110 mm focal length, and a 4-degree by 4-degree field of view. Secondly, we applied the principles of topology optimization to design the primary mirror assembly, the secondary mirror assembly, and the connecting baffle. The third and fourth modes achieved a resonance frequency of 1213.7 Hz. Then, we manufactured the mirror assemblies using additive manufacturing and single-point diamond turning, followed by the centering assembly method to complete the optical assembly. Lastly, we conducted performance testing on the system, with the test results revealing that the modulation transfer function (MTF) curves of the optical system reached the diffraction limit across the entire field of view. Remarkably, the system's weight was reduced to a mere 96.04 g. The use of additive manufacturing proves to be an effective means of enhancing optical system performance.

Abstract:An off-axis four-mirror-anastigmatic telescope is presented here which is composed of two aspheric surfaces and two spherical surfaces. The entrance pupil diameter is 290 mm and the stop is located at the primary mirror. The effective focal length is 900 mm. The strip field of view for the telescope is 15 degrees x 0.2 degrees and if the telescope is launched into an orbit about 400 km altitude, the observed range width will be more than 105 km within a scene without any other auxiliary scanning instrument. The spectral range can be as wide as from visual wave band to infrared wave band in the mirror system. This telescope can be used for environmental monitoring with different detectors whose pixel is adapted to the optical resolution. In this paper, the spectral range is chosen as 3.0 -5.0 mu m, and center distance of the pixel is 30 mu m. And the image quality is near the diffraction limit.

Abstract:Metalenses, artificially engineered subwavelength nanostructures to focus light within ultrathin thickness, promise potential for a paradigm shift of conventional optical devices. However, the aperture sizes of metalenses are usually bound within hundreds of micrometers by the commonly-used scanning-based fabrication methods, limiting their usage on practical optical devices like telescopes. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a high-efficiency, single-lens, refractive metalens telescope. We developed a mass production-friendly workflow for fabricating wafer-scale (80-mm aperture) metalenses using deep-ultraviolet (DUV) photolithography and a multi-exposure process involving reticle rotation and pattern stitching to leverage the radial symmetry of metalenses. Our metalens works in the near-infrared region (1200 - 1600 nm) with diffraction-limited performance and a high peak focusing efficiency of 80.84% at 1450 nm experimentally. Based on the metalens, we built a single-lens telescope and acquired images of the lunar surface, revealing its geographical structures. We believe our demonstration of the metalens telescope proves the exciting potential lying in the metasurfaces and could bring new possibilities for areas involving large optical systems, including geosciences, planetary observation, and astrophysical science.

Design of a high throughput telescope based on scanning off-axis Three-Mirror Anastigmat system

Abstract:High throughput optical system is defined to possess the features of both large field of view (FOV) and high resolution. However, it is full of challenge to design such a telescope with the two conflicting specifications at the same time. In this paper, we propose a method to design a high throughput telescope based on the classical off-axis Three-Mirror Anastigmat (TMA) configuration by introducing a scanning mechanism. We derive the optimum initial design for the TMA system with no primary aberrations through characteristic ray tracing. During the design process, a real exit pupil is necessitated to accommodate the scanning mirror. By gradually increasing the system's FOV during the optimization procedure, we finally obtained a high throughput telescope design with an F-number of 6, a FOV of 60$^{\circ}$*1.5$^{\circ}$, and a long focal length of 876mm. In addition, the tolerance analysis is also conducted to demonstrate the instrumentation feasibility. We believe that this kind of large rectangle FOV telescope with high resolution has broad future applications in the optical remote sensing field.

Abstract:Reflective imaging systems such as Cassegrain-type telescopes are widely utilized in astronomical observations. However, curved mirrors in traditional Cassegrain telescopes unavoidably make the imaging system bulky and costly. Recent developments in the field of metasurfaces provide an alternative way to construct optical systems, possessing the potential to make the whole system flat, compact and lightweight. In this work, we propose a design for a miniaturized Cassegrain telescope by replacing the curved primary and secondary mirrors with flat and ultrathin metasurfaces. The meta-atoms, consisting of SiO2 stripes on an Al film, provide high reflectance (>95%) and a complete phase coverage of 0~2π at the operational wavelength of 4 μm. The optical functionality of the metasurface Cassegrain telescope built with these meta-atoms was confirmed and studied with numerical simulations. Moreover, fabrication errors were mimicked by introducing random width errors to each meta-atom; their influence on the optical performance of the metasurface device was studied numerically. The concept of the metasurface Cassegrain telescope operating in the infrared wavelength range can be extended to terahertz (THz), microwave and even radio frequencies for real-world applications, where metasurfaces with a large aperture size are more easily obtained.

Abstract:The resolving power of metalens telescopes rely on their aperture size. Flat telescopes are advancing with the research on super-resolution confocal metalenses with large aperture. However, the aperture sizes of metalenses are usually bound within hundreds of micrometers due to computational and fabrication challenges, limiting their usage on practical optical devices like telescopes. In this work, we demonstrated a two-step designing method for the design of dual-band far-field super-resolution metalens with aperture sizes from the micro-scale to macro-scale. By utilizing two types of inserted unit cells, the phase profile of a dual-wavelength metalens with a small aperture of 100 μm was constructed. Through numerical simulation, the measured FWHM values of the focal spots of 5.81 μm and 6.81 μm at working wavelengths of 632.8 nm and 1265.6 nm were found to all be slightly smaller than the values of 0.61 λ/NA, demonstrating the super-resolution imaging of the designed metalens. By measuring the optical power ratio of the focal plane and the incident plane, the focusing efficiencies were 76% at 632.8 nm and 64% at 1265.6 nm. Based on the design method for small-aperture metalens, far-field imaging properties through the macro metalens with an aperture of 40 mm were simulated by using the Huygens-Fresnel principle. The simulation results demonstrate confocal far-field imaging behavior at the target wavelengths of 632.8 nm and 1265.6 nm, with a focal length of 200 mm. The design method for dual-band far-field super-resolution metalens with a large aperture opens a door towards the practical applications in the dual-band space telescope system.

Abstract:The precision single point diamond turning technique has been a promising technology for generating small and medium-sized freeform optical elements with high surface quality. In this paper, we present an extremely off-axis freeform optical system with a large 10.0 mm pupil diameter and a low 3.0 F-number over a wide 28° field of view. It is composed of two freeform aluminum mirrors, which are fabricated efficiently by the single point diamond turning machine. The manufacturing strategy and parameters are estimated rationally and comprehensively, based on the freeform surface characters. The freeform aluminum mirror surface can reach submicron surface accuracy and achieve nanometer surface roughness. The final assembled prototype of the off-axis two-mirror freeform display optical system has the advantages of compactness, a broad spectrum, and good display imaging performance.

Abstract:Microsatellites have a great attraction to researchers due to their high reliability, resource utilization, low cost, and compact size. As the core component of the optical payload, the mirror directly affects the system package size. Therefore, the structural design of mirrors is critical in the compact internal space of microsatellites. This study proposes a closed-back mirror with composite surfaces based on additive manufacturing (AM). Compared with the open-back mirror, it provides excellent optomechanical performance. In addition, AM significantly reduces the intricate mechanical parts' manufacturing difficulty. Finally, the roughness was better than 2 nm. The surface shape of the AM aluminum mirror reached RMS 1/10λ (λ = 632.8 nm) with the aid of ultra-precision machining technologies such as single-point diamond turning (SPDT), surface modification, and polishing, and the maximum deviation of the surface shape was about RMS 1/42λ (λ = 632.8 nm) after the thermal cycle test, which verified the optical grade application of AM.

Abstract:Metasurfaces composed of ultrathin subwavelength meta-atoms have attracted intensive attention due to their exceptional abilities to freely manipulate light waves, resulting in numerous new concepts and applications in modern optics. However, the existing metasurfaces are typically designed as single components as part of traditional optical systems, limiting their superiorities of miniaturization and integration. Here, a new design framework for monolithic integrated optical systems is proposed based on cascaded metasurfaces. We experimentally demonstrate an optical telescope system integrating two metasurfaces on a monolithic chip. The telescope prototype has an ultrathin planar structure with 1 mm thickness, and the focal lengths of the two metasurfaces are 800 and 200 mu m, respectively. The optical performance specifications of the telescope are characterized, achieving superior resolving power and predesigned magnification functionality. This metasurface-based monolithic integrated optical system brings new possibilities to further improve the miniaturization and integration of optical systems in future.

Abstract:To meet the requirements of co-phase diffraction limit imaging,a high resolution tip/tilt mirror(TM)for multi-mirror ground-based telescope is proposed and designed.Three dumbbell-shaped flexible hinges and rhombus attenuated displace-ment structures (RADSs)were used in the TM system as the moving transmission devices,and three piezoelectric stack actuators (PSAs)were applied as driving components.The structure parameters of the flexible hinges and RADSs were optimized by theo-retical,experimental and simulative methods.The experimental results show that the TM has an extreme high angular resolution of 0.017″,and the mechanical excursion angle is larger than 0.24′with a natural frequency of 136.97 Hz,which accord well with the results of the theoretical estimation and finite element analyzing (FEA)simulation.The high angular resolution property indi-cates the multi-mirror telescope can achieve the imaging in diffraction limit.

Abstract:Abstract Long-wave infrared imaging systems are widely used in the field of environmental monitoring and imaging guidance. As the core components, the long-wave infrared lenses suffer the conditions of less available materials, difficult processing, large volume and mass. Metalens composed of sub-wavelength structures is one of the most potential candidates to achieve a lightweight and planar optical imaging systems. Meanwhile, it is essential to obtain large-aperture infrared lenses with high power and high resolution. However, it is difficult to use the finite-difference time-domain method to simulate a large-aperture metalens with the diameter of 201 mm due to the large amount of computational memory and computational time required. Here, to solve the mentioned problem, we firstly propose a simulation method for designing a large-aperture metalens, which combines the finite-difference time-domain algorithm and diffraction integration. The finite-difference time-domain algorithm is used to simulate the meta-atom’s transmitted complex amplitude and the one-dimensional simplification of the diffraction integral is to calculate the focused field distributions of the designed metalens. Furthermore, the meta-atom spatial multiplexing is applied to design the all-silicon metalenses with the aperture of 201 mm to realize dual-wavelength (10 and 11 μ m) achromatic focusing, super anomalous dispersion focusing and super normal dispersion focusing. The designed metalenses are numerically confirmed, which reveal the feasibility of all-silicon sub-wavelength structures to accomplish the multiwavelength dispersion control. The designed all-silicon metalenses have the advantage of lightweight and compact. The proposed method is effective for the development of large-aperture imaging systems in the long-wave infrared.

It is composed of three aspheric surfaces and one spherical surface while the third mirror and fifth mirror have the same parameters at the same place. This configuration is useful for having wide field of view. The strip full field of view for the near infrared telescope is 20 degrees x0.2 degrees. The entrance pupil is located in front of the first mirror. There is an intermediate image between the second mirror and the third mirror. The entrance pupil diameter is 100 mm and the effective focal length is 250 mm. The spectral range is 0.85 -1.75 mu m. The pixel pitch is 15 mu m. The image quality is near the diffraction limit. Some methods were used to restrain the stray light such as a field stop near the intermediate image, the baffle, the narrow-band pass filter and a stop in front of the focal plane.
Designing high-efficiency extended depth-of-focus metalens via topology-shape optimization

Abstract:Longitudinal optical field modulation is of critical importance in a wide range of applications, including optical imaging, spectroscopy, and optical manipulation. However, it remains a considerable challenge to realize a uniformly distributed light field with extended depth-of-focus. Here, a high-efficiency extended depth-of-focus metalens is proposed by adjoint-based topology-shape optimization approach, wherein the theoretical electric field intensity corresponding to a variable focal-length phase is utilized as the figure of merit. Using a dozen of metalens with random structure parameters as initial structures, the average focal depth of topology-shape optimized metalens is greatly improved up to 18.80 μm (about 29.7 λ ), which is 1.54 times higher than the diffraction-limited focal depth. Moreover, all the topology-shape optimized metalens exhibit high diffraction efficiency exceeding 0.7 over the whole focal depth range, which is approximately three times greater than that of the forward design. Our results offer a new insight into the design of extended depth-of-focus metalens and may find potential applications in imaging, holography, and optical fabrication.
