Abstract:This paper presents model test and numerical finite element analysis (FEA) on mechanical behavior of a typical composite bridge. The model test with scale of 1:30 of the composite bridge was conduct to fully understand the safety and serviceability. In the experiment, stress distribution, deflection resistance ability, dynamic property, and distortion effect of the Bridge’s main control cross-section were carefully measured to investigate the mechanical performance and interaction between main bridge and ramp system. On the basis of the experimental results of the typical composite mode bridge, the model bridges were modeled as three-dimensional structures using commercially available software. The results of the finite element analysis are in good agreement with those of the tests in terms of strength and stiffness. The parameters considered herein were the bearing condition, longitudinal slope of ramp, ramp curved radii, and bifurcate diaphragm plate stiffness. It was also expected that the results presented in this paper would be useful as references for the further research and the design of the typical composite bridges.

Abstract:Numerically predicting the performance of heterogeneous structures without scale separation is a challenging task owing to the critical requirements related to computational scalability and efficiency that must be satisfied. In addition, adopting a sufficiently fine mesh to consider the small-scale heterogeneities results in prohibitive computational costs, whereas neglecting them tends to drastically over-stiffen the rigidity of the structure. Thus, this study proposed an approach for constructing new material-aware shape (basis) functions per element for a coarse discretization of the structure considering each curved bridge node (CBN) that is defined along the boundaries of the elements. Rather than formulating their derivation by regarding them as a nonlinear optimization problem, the shape functions were constructed mapping the CBNs to the interior nodes and were subsequently presented in an explicit matrix form as a product of Bezier interpolation and boundary-interior transformations. The CBN shape function captures the heterogeneity of the coarse element with greater flexibility, overcomes the important and challenging issues of inter-element stiffness and displacement discontinuity across interfaces between coarse elements, and improves the analysis accuracy by several orders of magnitude. Moreover, they satisfy the basic geometric properties of shape functions, thereby avoiding non-physical analysis results. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed approach was tested and demonstrated through extensive numerical examples, including a 3D industrial example of billions of degrees of freedom, and comparisons with results obtained from classical approaches were made. Abstract:In the traditional wire bonding structure, the distance between the signal wire and the ground wire cannot be too small, which leads to the large characteristic impedance and affects the integrity of signal transmission. To solve this problem, this paper proposes two kinds of multi-layered wire bonding structures, which can effectively reduce the characteristic impedance of bonding wire. Through numerical examples, the effectiveness of the proposed new structures is verified.

Abstract:The characteristics of bridge pile-group foundation have a significant influence on the dynamic performance of the superstructure. Most of the existing analysis methods for the pile-group foundation impedance take the trait of strong specialty, which cannot be generalized in practical projects. Therefore, a project-oriented numerical solution algorithm is proposed to compute the dynamic impedance of bridge pile-group foundation. Based on the theory of viscous-spring artificial boundary, the derivation and solution of the impedance function are transferred to numerical modeling and harmonic analysis, which can be carried out through the finite element method. By taking a typical pile-group foundation as a case study, the results based on the algorithm are compared with those from existing literature. Moreover, an impact experiment of a real pile-group foundation was implemented, the results of which are also compared with those resulting from the proposed numerical algorithm. Both comparisons show that the proposed numerical algorithm satisfies engineering precision, thus showing good effectiveness in application.

Abstract:This Letter presents an analytical expression for the equivalent impedance of the fundamental mode of both 2D and 3D metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguides. It also presents circuit models for passive 2D MIM waveguide components represented by additional parasitic circuit elements. Moreover, a modeling library for various 2D MIM waveguide structures is developed. The proposed analytical results have been verified and show great accuracy compared to the full-wave characterizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the algorithms implemented in MBEM, a program for wideband impedance extraction of complicated 3-D structures. MBEM is based on a mixed boundary element method (BEM), which reduces the number of unknowns from about 7 N in FastImp to 4 N , for MQS analysis. Efficient techniques are proposed to handle the extra matrix multiplication, form post-process matrices, and solve the final linear equation system. The inaccuracy of calculation using FastImp at low frequency is also analyzed, which shows the mixed BEM eliminates it completely. Experiments on several typical 3-D structures validate the advantage of MBEM over FastImp, on both accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:We present here the concept of three-arm current comparator impedance bridge, which allows comparisons among three unlike impedances. Its purpose is the calibration of impedances having arbitrary phase angles, against calibrated nearly-pure impedances. An analysis of the bridge optimal setting and proper operation is presented. To test the concept, a two terminal-pair digitally-assisted bridge has been realized; measurements of an air-core inductor and of an RC network versus decade resistance and capacitance standards, at kHz frequency, have been performed. The bridge measurements are compatible with previous knowledge of the standards' values with relative deviations in the 10^-5 -- 10^-6 range.

Abstract:Abstract This research investigates a complex n order cascading circuit network with embedded horizontal bridge circuits with the N-RT method. The contents of the study include equivalent resistance analytical formula and complex impedance characteristics of the circuit network. The research idea is as follows. Firstly the equivalent model of n -order resistance network is established, and a fractional difference equation model is derived using Kirchhoff’s law. Secondly, the equivalent transformation method is employed to transform the fractional equation into a simple linear difference equation, and its particular solution is computed. Then the solution to the difference equation is used to derive the effective resistance of the resistance network of the embedded horizontal bridge circuit, and various special cases of equivalent resistance formula are analyzed and the correctness of the analysis model gets verified. Finally, as an expanded application, the equivalent complex impedance of LC network is studied, and Matlab drawing tool is employed to offer the equivalent impedance with various variables of the graph. Our results provide new research ideas and theoretical basis for relevant scientific researches and practical applications.

Abstract:Recent research has shown that ideal capacitors and inductors do not physically exist, and that the dynamics of real devices can be accurately described by fractional-order (FO) mathematical models. This paper investigates a class of 2×n order RC cobweb FO circuit network with central node. Based on the Kirchhoff's laws, the impedance magnitude and phase between two points of the network are derived using difference equations and matrix transformations. Three impedance expressions are deduced, and their correctness is verified numerically and by simulations. The influence of various parameters of the electrical network, namely the resistance, capacitance, number of circuit units, frequency and fractional order, on the impedance is studied. Additionally, for the first time, physical experiments are presented to compare the effectiveness of FO and integer-order circuit networks for describing the impedance of actual physical circuits. These experiments confirm that FO circuit network models perform better than the integer-order ones for representing the characteristics of the impedance magnitude and phase.

Abstract:Displacement amplification ratio and input stiffness are significant design characteristics for an ultra-precision positioning flexure-based compliant mechanism. Early and accurate performance prediction models can significantly improve the reliability and availability of product in the field of ultra-precision positioning, but Existing theoretic models cannot predict its characteristics accurately and make it very difficult to error compensation by means of these models. This paper provides a set of uncanonical linear homogeneous equations for calculating a classic bridge-type mechanical amplifier performance, these closed-form equations are established based on the thought of statically indeterminate structure, including Force Method, Maxwell-Mohr Method and deformation compatibility. Subsequently, case studies involving the calculation results compared with FEA, geometric parameters' influence discussion and modal analysis using FEA simulation are presented. This proposed analytical model is applicable and reliable to the bridge-type micro-displacement amplifier design and verification. Furthermore, the present model can be used in any other over-constrained flexure-based amplifier.

Abstract:Based on the mixed boundary element method, this paper proposes several techniques for 3D impedance extraction, including an efficient organization and row-column adjustment of the sparse coefficient matrix, and a pre-conditioned iterative equation solver. A fast impedance extractor is formed with these techniques. The proposed method has faster speed than the newly-developed FastImp by MIT, while preserving high accuracy. Numerical experiments on two typical interconnect structures verify the efficiency of this method.
Modelling Realistic Multi-layer devices for superconducting quantum electronic circuits

Abstract:In this work, we present a numerical model specifically designed for 3D multilayer devices, with a focus on nanobridge junctions and coplanar waveguides. Unlike existing numerical models, ours does not approximate the physical layout or limit the number of constituent materials, providing a more accurate and flexible design tool. We calculate critical currents, current phase relationships, and the energy gap where relevant. We validate our model by comparing it with published data. Through our analysis, we found that using multilayer films significantly enhances control over these quantities. For nanobridge junctions in particular, multilayer structures improve qubit anharmonicity compared to monolayer junctions, offering a substantial advantage for qubit performance. For coated multilayer microwave circuits it allows for better studies of the proximity effect, including their effective kinetic inductance.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted increasing interest in recent years owing to their intriguing physical characteristics such as the infinitely high quality factor (Q factor) and the enhanced wave-matter interaction. In this study, we report the theoretical and experimental observation of a Friedrich-Wintgen BIC with bridging near-field coupling in an asymmetric two-state acoustic system. Through the temporal coupled-mode theory, we comprehensively elucidate the role of bridging near-field coupling in constructing Friedrich-Wintgen BICs. Then, we present a two-state system consisting of two asymmetric cavities with a bridging tube. By tuning the diameter and position of the bridging tube, we can effectively modulate the near-field coupling effect of the presented system and achieve a Friedrich-Wintgen BIC. Furthermore, the presented system is modulated to deviate from the BIC, which provides a quasi-BIC and allows for a high-Q perfect absorption when the radiation and dissipation of the quasi-BIC-supporting system achieve the critical coupling condition. The experimental results validate the theoretical and simulation results, demonstrating both the existence of a BIC and a quasi-BIC-based perfect absorption. Our work opens up an avenue to investigate acoustic Friedrich-Wintgen BICs with bridging near-field coupling in asymmetric systems, which enriches the field of acoustic BICs and offers opportunities for the development of acoustic devices with high Q factor and asymmetric wave control.

Abstract:The recently proposed weak form quadrature element method (QEM) is extended to the analysis of planar frameworks which are characterized by C1 continuity. Weak form quadrature elements for planar frameworks are developed. Examples are presented and comparison with the results of the finite element method is made to demonstrate the effectiveness and high computational efficiency of the QEM.

Abstract:This paper presents a generalized framework to derive the wideband AC/DC impedances based on the technique of frequency-domain multiharmonic linearization, and the symmetrical modular multilevel converter (MMC) is selected to verify its feasibility. First, the basics towards impedance modeling of MMC are reviewed. Then the modeling framework is illustrated with special efforts executed on each harmonic transfer function matrixes referring to the control strategies adopted in the real project roughly. Both the frequency-scan test and the stability analysis results validate the high accuracy of the theoretical models. Further discussions on the key points are added to enhance the adaptivity and necessity of the framework.

A Unified-Mode Analysis Method for Symmetric Networks and Its Application to Balun Design

Abstract:A unified-mode analysis method for modeling symmetric networks is proposed in this paper. Adjusting to the characteristics of Marchand balun circuits, a unified-mode circuit model is constructed by introducing virtual impedance. The tenable condition of a Marchand balun with connecting segments is then derived. The parameter constraint of Marchand balun's input matching is given in a quarter-saddle diagram. Simulated results under different parameter conditions verify the validity of the derived formulas. Based on the derived formulas, the traditional isolation circuit and impedance matching circuit are merged with a Marchand balun to achieve matching for all ports and full-frequency isolation between output ports. A microstrip balun with input and output impedance values of 50 Ω, operating at 1.5 GHz, is simulated, fabricated, and measured. The simulated and measured results of the microstrip balun are in good agreement. When the core parameters remain unchanged, an impedance transformer is inserted in front of the input port of the balun to realize a balun with a topology characterized by flexible impedance transformation. A balun with an input impedance of 35 Ω and different output impedances of 50 Ω and 75 Ω is simulated and fabricated to verify the design concept. Measured results show that an amplitude balance of less than 0.4 dB and a phase balance of less than 3° for a fractional bandwidth of 50%. It should be mentioned that all design equations are closed-form and can be readily employed to design symmetric networks.
