Abstract:Research stimulated by the health-belief model has often produced conflicting findings and unsatisfactory prediction of health-related behavior. The poor performance of the health-belief model is traced to 3 problems: consideration of nonsalient beliefs and neglect of salient beliefs relevant to the behavior, lack of correspondence between some of the model's predictors and the behavioral criterion, and reliance on distal background variables (demographic characteristics or personality traits) to predict health-related behaviors. Based on the theory of reasoned action, an alternative approach is suggested whereby health-related actions, like any other behavior, are explained in terms of intentions, attitudes, subjective norms, and salient behavioral and normative beliefs that correspond to the behavior of interest.
