Abstract:The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism in van der Waals materials has opened the door to the control of 2D magnetism by means of electric field. Here we demonstrate the magnetization reversal through switching polarization in a designed 2D multiferroic oxide by combining group theory analysis and first-principles calculation. We show that ferroelectricity can be induced by a specific octahedral rotation in a perovskite bilayer. Ferromagnetism can be introduced simultaneously by extending the guideline to the B-site ordered double-perovskite bilayer. We have found two coupling mechanisms between polarization and magnetization that enable the reversal of the in-plane magnetization by ferroelectric switching. Our work provides guidelines for the design of 2D multiferroics with intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling and helps to control the 2D magnetism by electric field.

Abstract:The coexistence of some materials which are normally in mutually exclusive states is attracting considerable attention as an intriguing means of obtaining nontrivial physical phenomena and unconventional multifunctional substances. Although single‐phase materials endowed with integrated ferroelectric, magnetic, and optical multifunctions hold promise for new technological paradigms, the mutually exclusive mechanisms within ferroelectricity, conductivity, and magnetism hinder the discovery of conducting multiferroics. Here, a new path toward metallic multiferroics is provided by theoretically demonstrating the possible compatible nature of ferroelectric distortion, free carriers, and magnetism in electron‐doped PbTiO3 using the hybrid Hartree–Fock density functional theories. Doping with electrons is found to induce metallic conductivity that coexists with and even enhances the ferroelectric distortion in PbTiO3, due to the unique lone‐pair ferroelectricity in this material. The injected excess electrons, in spin‐polarized states, interact with one another in the plane perpendicular to the polar direction, resulting in layer‐arranged ferromagnetism and multiferroics with nonlinear magnetoelectric coupling. These results indicate a means of circumventing conventional restrictions, leading to new types of multifunctional materials in which unusual multiferroic and conductive characteristics are simultaneously present.

Abstract:Multiferroics offer exciting opportunities for electric-field control of magnetism. Unfortunately, single-phase multiferroics suitable for such applications at room temperature has not been discovered. Here, we propose the concept of a new type of multiferroics, namely, "asymmetric multiferroic". In asymmetric multiferroics, two locally stable ferroelectric states are not symmetrically equivalent, leading to different magnetic properties between these two states. Furthermore, we predict from first-principles that a Fe-Cr-Mo superlattice with the LiNbO3-type structure is such an asymmetric multiferroic. The strong ferrimagnetism, high ferroelectric polarization, and significant dependence of the magnetic transition temperature on polarization make this asymmetric multiferroic an ideal candidate for realizing electric-field control of magnetism at room temperature. Our study suggests that asymmetric multiferroic may provide a new playground for voltage control of magnetism and find its applications in spintronics and quantum computing.
Electron engineering of metallic multiferroic polarons in epitaxial BaTiO 3

Abstract:The coexistence of ferroelectricity, conductivity, and magnetism in a single-phase material has attracted considerable attention due to fundamental interest and tremendous technological potential. However, their mutually exclusive mechanisms hinder the discovery of multifunctional conducting multiferroics. Here, we propose a new material design approach for electron engineering to enable these conflicting properties to coexist. We use first principles calculations to demonstrate that appropriate mechanical strain can turn the excess electrons in doped BaTiO 3 from a free-carrier configuration to a localized polaronic state by modulating the electron–phonon coupling. The resulting localized spin-polarized electron survives the host ferroelectricity and consequently manifests as a multiferroic polaron. The multiferroic properties coexist with the electronic conductivity arising from the high-hopping mobility of the polaron, which enables the doped epitaxial BaTiO 3 to act as a multiferroic conducting material. This mechanical control over the electron configuration is a potential path toward unusual coexisting properties.
Two-Dimensional Asymmetric Multiferroics: Unique Way toward Strong Magnetoelectric Coupling and Multistate Memory

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have provided a fascinating platform for exploring novel multiferroics and emergent magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. Here, a novel 2D asymmetric multiferroic based on Janus 2D multiferroic MXene-analogous oxynitrides (InTlNO2) is presented by using first-principles calculations. We find three inequivalent phases for InTlNO2, including two metallic phases (p1 and p2) and one semiconducting phase (p3) with a band gap of 0.88 eV. All phases are room-temperature multiferroics with different Curie temperatures, leading to tunability by phase transitions. We show that there is a 90° rotation of the magnetic anisotropy easy axis between p1 and p2, where p1 favors the in-plane and p2 the out-of-plane easy axis. Therefore, the magnetic anisotropy can be tuned by reversing the out-of-plane polarization. Our strategy provides a unique way toward strong magnetoelectric coupling and multistate memory.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics have attracted increasing interests in basic science and technological fields in recent years. However, most reported 2D magnetic ferroelectrics are based on the d -electron magnetism, which makes them rather rare due to the empirical d 0 rule and limits their applications for low magnetic phase transition temperature. In this work, we demonstrate that the ferroelectricity can coexist with the p -electron-induced ferromagnetism without the limitation of d 0 rule and metallicity in a family of stable 2D MXene-analogous oxynitrides, X 2 NO 2 ( X = In, Tl). Remarkably, the itinerant character of p electrons can lead to the strong ferromagnetic metallic states. Furthermore, a possible magnetoelectric effect is manifested in a Tl 2 NO 2 /WTe 2 heterostructure through the interface engineering. Our findings provide an alternative possible route toward 2D multiferroics and enrich the concept of ferroelectric metals.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) multiferroics have attracted numerous attention due to their fascinating properties and promising applications. Although the ferroelectric (FE)-ferroelastic and ferromagnetic (FM)-ferroelastic multiferroics have been observed/predicted in 2D systems, 2D ferromagnetic-ferroelectric (FM-FE) multiferroics remain to be discovered since FM insulators are very rare. Here, we proposed for the first time the concept of 2D hyperferroelectric metals, with which the insulating prerequisite for the FM-FE multiferroic is no longer required in 2D systems. We validate the concept of 2D hyperferroelectric metals and 2D metallic FM-FE multiferroics by performing first-principle calculations on 2D CrN and CrB2 systems. The 2D buckled monolayer CrN is found to be a hyperferroelectic metal with the FM ground state, i.e., a 2D FM-FE multiferroic. With the global optimization approach, we find the 2D CrB2 system has an antiferromagnetic (AFM)/planar ground state and a FM/FE metastable state, suggesting that it can be used to realize electric field control of magnetism. Our analysis demonstrates that the spin-phonon coupling and metal-metal interaction are two new mechanisms for stabilizing the out-of-plane electric polarization in 2D systems. Our work not only extends the concept of FE to metallic systems, but also paves a new way to search the long-sought high temperature FM-FE multiferroics.

Abstract:The discovery of novel two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic materials is attractive due to their potential for the realization of information storage and logic devices. Although many approaches have been explored to simultaneously introduce ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric (FE) orders into a 2D material, the resulting systems are often plagued by weak magnetoelectric (ME) coupling or limited room-temperature stability. Here, we present a superlattice strategy to construct non-centrosymmetric AM 2 X 4 multiferroic monolayers, i.e., intercalating transition metal ions (A) into the tetragonal-like vacancies of transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers (MX 2 ). Starting from 960 intercalated AM 2 X 4 compounds, our high-throughput calculations have identified 21 multiferroics with robust magnetic order, large FE polarization, low transition barrier, high FE/FM transition temperature, and strong ME coupling. According to the origin of magnetism, we have classified them into twelve type- a , seven type- b , and two type- c multiferroics, which exhibit different ME coupling behavior. During the switching of polarization, the reversal of skyrmions chirality, the transition of the magnetic ground state from FM to antiferromagnetic, and the changes in spin-polarized electron distribution were observed in type- a , type- b , and type- c 2D multiferroic materials, respectively. These results substantially expand the family of 2D ferroic materials and pave an avenue for designing and implementing nonvolatile logic and memory devices.

Abstract:The combination of metallicity and ferroelectricity challenges conventional understanding, creating opportunities for advanced electronic materials and devices. This breakthrough is particularly notable, as metallicity and ferroelectricity have traditionally been considered mutually exclusive physical properties. In this work, starting with non-polar metallic single layers, we propose a design scheme for designing two-dimensional (2D) ferroelectric metals (FEMs) based on van der Waals interactions. By first-principles calculations, we also substantiate the feasibility of the design scheme in materials such as FeSe and H-MnTe2. Notably, this scheme unveils metallic ferroelectricity, characterized by reversing polarization through interlayer sliding. Furthermore, these systems exhibit a coexistence of inherent magnetism and sliding ferroelectricity. The investigated design scheme and observed phenomena have broad applicability across 2D materials. Our results not only advance research in 2D FEMs but also enhance the understanding of coupled physical phenomena in 2D lattices.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) XY ferromagnets have drawn pronounced interest in recent years, but the characteristic of easy-plane magnetization restricts their application in spintronics to some extent. Here, we propose a general strategy for constructing multiferroic van der Waals heterostructures, aiming to achieve electrical control over the magnetic anisotropy in 2D XY ferromagnets. The validity of this strategy is verified by the heterostructure composed of ferromagnetic VBi 2 Te 4 and ferroelectric In 2 Se 3 monolayers. By manipulating the polarized states of In 2 Se 3 , the VBi 2 Te 4 can be reversibly transformed between 2D XY and Heisenberg ferromagnets, characterized by the switching of easy magnetization axis between in-plane and out-of-plane directions. More interestingly, accompanied by the changes in magnetic anisotropy, the VBi 2 Te 4 also demonstrates a phase transition from a semiconductor to a half-metal state, which can be ascribed to the band alignment and interfacial charge transfer. The switchable magnetic and electronic properties enable the heterostructure to be utilized in nonvolatile memory and logic devices. Additionally, the half-metallicity and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of the heterostructure can be effectively tuned by biaxial strain. These findings not only pave the way for electrically nonvolatile control of 2D XY ferromagnet, but also facilitate the development of interfacial magnetoelectric physics and applications.

Abstract:Low-dimensional multiferroicity, though highly scarce in nature, has attracted great attention due to both fundamental and technological interests. Using first-principles density functional theory, we show that ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity can coexist in monolayer transition metal phosphorus chalcogenides (TMPCs)-CuMP2X6 (M = Cr, V; X = S, Se). These van der Waals layered materials represent a class of 2D multiferroic semiconductors that simultaneously possess ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders. In these monolayer materials, Cu atoms spontaneously move away from the center atomic plane, giving rise to nontrivial electric dipole moment along the plane normal. In addition, their ferromagnetism originates from indirect exchange interaction between Cr/V atoms, and their out-of-plane ferroelectricity suggests the possibility of controlling electric polarization by external vertical electric field. Monolayer semiconducting TMPCs thus provide a solid-state 2D materials platform for realizing 2D nanoscale switches and memory devices patterned with top and bottom electrodes.

Two-dimensional Topological Ferroelectric Metal with Giant Shift Current

Abstract:The pursuit for "ferroelectric metal" which combines seemingly incompatible spontaneous electric polarization and metallicity, has been assiduously ongoing but remains elusive. Unlike traditional ferroelectrics with a wide band gap, ferroelectric (FE) metals can naturally incorporate nontrivial band topology near the Fermi level, endowing them with additional exotic properties. Here, we show first-principles evidence that the metallic PtBi2 monolayer is an intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) topological FE metal, characterized by out-of-plane polarization and a moderate switching barrier. Moreover, it exhibits a topologically nontrivial electronic structure with Z2 invariant equal to 1, leading to a significant FE bulk photovoltaic effect. A slight strain can further enhance this effect to a remarkable level, which far surpass that of previously reported 2D/3D FE materials. Our work provides an important step towards realizing intrinsic monolayer topological FE metals and paves a promising way for future nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:Magnetism and ferroelectricity are essential to many forms of current technology, and the quest for multiferroic materials, where these two phenomena are intimately coupled, is of great technological and fundamental importance. Ferroelectricity and magnetism tend to be mutually exclusive and interact weakly with each other when they coexist. The exciting new development is the discovery that even a weak magnetoelectric interaction can lead to spectacular cross-coupling effects when it induces electric polarization in a magnetically ordered state. Such magnetic ferroelectricity, showing an unprecedented sensitivity to ap plied magnetic fields, occurs in 'frustrated magnets' with competing interactions between spins and complex magnetic orders. We summarize key experimental findings and the current theoretical understanding of these phenomena, which have great potential for tuneable multifunctional devices.

More importantly, the magnetic critical temperature is calculated to be ∼168 K, which is larger than those of the recently reported 2D multiferroic and ferromagnetic systems. Our findings also provide a promising platform to control the magnetic properties and electric behavior in 2D multiferroics using an external electric field.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic heterostructures present a promising platform for advanced spin devices by leveraging the coexisting ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric (FE) orders. Through first-principles calculations and micromagnetic simulations, we reveal non-volatile control of metallicity and topological spin textures in the Cr2Ge2Te6/Hf2Ge2Te6(CGT/HGT) heterostructure. Notably, manipulating ferroelectric polarization in HGT significantly modulates the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) of CGT/HGT, reversing the easy magnetization axis from in-plane to out-of-plane. By analyzing the atomic-resolved SOC energy (\Delta Esoc), it is found that the cause of the change comes from the Fert-Levy mechanism. Additionally, this polarization control enables the creation and annihilation of bimerons and skyrmions, with interlayer sliding further altering magnetic ordering. Our findings offer valuable insights into magnetoelectric coupling and spin texture manipulation in 2D magnets, highlighting their potential for next-generation spintronic and memory devices.

Artificial Multiferroics and Enhanced Magnetoelectric Effect in van der Waals Heterostructures

Abstract:Multiferroic materials with coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties are important for multifunctional devices due to their potential ability of controlling magnetism via electric field, and vice versa. The recent discoveries of two-dimensional ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials have ignited tremendous research interest and aroused hope to search for two-dimensional multiferroics. However, intrinsic two-dimensional multiferroic materials and, particularly, those with strong magnetoelectric couplings are still rare to date. In this paper, using first-principles simulations, we propose artificial two-dimensional multiferroics via a van der Waals heterostructure formed by ferromagnetic bilayer chromium triiodide (CrI3) and ferroelectric monolayer Sc2CO2. In addition to the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, our calculations show that, by switching the electric polarization of Sc2CO2, we can tune the interlayer magnetic couplings of bilayer CrI3 between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states. We further reveal that such a strong magnetoelectric effect is from a dramatic change of the band alignment induced by the strong build-in electric polarization in Sc2CO2 and the subsequent change of the interlayer magnetic coupling of bilayer CrI3. These artificial multiferroics and enhanced magnetoelectric effect give rise to realizing multifunctional nanoelectronics by van der Waals heterostructures.
