Abstract:Construction of block copolymers is a practical method for modifying the properties of CO2-based polycarbonates (CO2-PCs) in order to meet specific needs. Herein, we report a well-defined single-site beta-diiminate zinc complex 1 equipped with the capacities of coordination copolymerization of CO2/epoxide and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of vinyl monomers. Complex 1 is specifically designed to possess a 3-(benzylthiocarbonothioylthio)propionate (BSTP) initiating group, which enables the controlled ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides and CO2, leaving a polycarbonate with BSTP functional group at the end of the chain. The end-capped BSTP allows direct chain extension via living RAFT polymerization, thus providing a robust construct various CO2-based block copolymers in one pot via a tandem catalysis strategy. The structure of 1 is established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as well as H-1 and C-13 NMR By utilizing 1, a wide range of CO2-based block copolymers including poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PCHC-b-PDMAEMA), poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-polystyrene (PCHC-b-PS), and poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PCHC-bPNIPAM) with controlled molecular weight and compositions are prepared. These block copolymers are fully characterized by DSC, H-1 NMR, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Especially, a thermoresponsive PCHC-b-PNIPAM copolymer is for the first time synthesized as a functional nanomaterial. The complex and catalytic process provided here offers a straightforward catalytic access to CO2-based block copolymers.
One-pot Synthesis of Octablock Copolymers of High-Molecular Weight Via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract:Multiblock copolymers (mBCPs) could offer new opportunities to design new nanomaterials with multifunctions or enhanced properties in a cost-effective way. However, it is still very challenging to obtain high degree of polymerization in each block of mBCPs with large block number using one-pot synthesis via controlled radical polymerizations. This is due to the accumulation of the dead chains throughout the many step polymerization. In this work, we developed a new highly efficient strategy for preparing mBCPs with large block number using one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization, where every polymer block was formed by sequential addition of monomers. We achieved high block degree of polymerizations (similar to 100 per block) for a model system of "octablock" polystyrene (PS) in just 2 hr per block. Experimentally measured molecular weights are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The dead chains generated through the polymerization are negligible due to the low initiator concentration. Yet the polymerization rates are still very fast due to the heterogeneous advantages of emulsion polymerization. We have also applied this strategy to a series of mBCPs from diblock (PS176-PnBA(286))(1) to octablock (PS176-PnBA(286))(4) (PnBA for poly(n-butyl acrylate)). The high degree of polymerization in our mBCPs ensures microphase separation even though PS/PnBA system is known for small chi values. We have also found that the tensile properties of our mBCPs increase significantly with increased number of blocks. Our work reveals that the number of blocks is an important molecular variable for tuning the mechanical properties of block copolymers.
The Synthesis of High Molecular Weight Block Copolymers by Raft Polymerization

Abstract:RAFT polymerization is a type of psudo-living radical polymerization. In order to synthesize high pure block copolymers by RAFT polymerization, it is desirable to suppress the irreversible termination which may result in the formation of dead chains. For polymers less than 5 x 10(4) g/mol, the dead chain fraction could remain to be lower than 0.1 by reducing the initiator concentration. In the synthesis of block copolymers, the dead chains formed in the first stage are actually contaminant. Targeting to the synthesis of high pure block copolymers with high molecular weight using RAFT polymerization, we studied the copolymerization of butyl acrylate and styrene mediated by 1-phenylethyl phenyl-dithioacetate (PEPDTA) as a RAFT agent. The influences of the type of initiators (AIBN (2-2'-azobis ( isobutyronitrile)), ACC ( 1-1'-azobis ( cyclohexane-carbonitrile)), the concentrations of initiator and polymerization temperature on the copolymerization kinetics and molecular weight and its distribution were investigated. When AIBN was used, the polymerization would stop at middle monomer conversion, which limited the increase of molecular weight of the copolymer if we reduced the initiator concentration. It was found that only with the initiator (ACC) with small decomposition rate constant and high polymerization temperature, the block copolymer with high molecular weight and small fraction of dead chains ( < 0.1) could be synthesized. The reason for these quite strict requirements is that the initiator concentration should remain far below that of the conventional radical polymerization, which is limited by the very low RAFT concentration.

Abstract:It is well-known that controlled/living radical copolymerization (CLRcoP) yields gradient copolymer with the composition varying along chain length. The composition distribution of the as-synthesized product is solely determined by the comonomer reactivity ratios and is thus not well controlled. This work reports the first experimental example of the control over the copolymer composition distribution through semibatch operations. Using styrene (St)/butyl acrylate (BA) as a model system, we synthesized uniform and linear gradient copolymers via semibatch reverse addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT) mediated by benzyl dithioisobutyrate. The comonomer feeding rate profiles for the targeted distributions were designed from a newly developed computer model that was trained from the batch RAFT copolymerizations of St and BA at different monomer compositions. The semibatch copolymerization yielded precise copolymer products having their composition distributions exactly as targeted and the polymerization rate and molecular weight profiles as predicted by the model.

Abstract:A series of well-controlled polystyrene-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene triblock copolymers were prepared by emulsion polymerization with a carefully designed amphiphilic macroRAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) agent. The triblock copolymers were produced within four hours and only a few percent of dead chains were estimated. Tensile strength of the materials was a function of composition only and it increased linearly with polystyrene composition up to 50 wt %. The ultimate tensile strength reached 10 MPa with an elongation at break of 500% at the polystyrene composition of 40-50 wt %.

Abstract:The structured nanoparticles of styrene (St) and butadiene (Bd) block copolymers were prepared by RAFT seeded emulsion polymerization of butadiene. It was confirmed that the block copolymers of PSt-b-P(St-co-Bd) was formed with controlled molecular weight and rather low PDI at low composition of the P(St-co-Bd) segment. With more incorporation of butadiene, the branching reaction of polybutadiene became obvious, leading to higher PDI and positive deviation of Mn from the theoretical predication. At the gel point, the composition of the P(St-co-Bd) segment was estimated to be 0.72. After this, the gel fraction increased quickly. The morphology of structured nanoparticles could be largely tuned simply by the copolymer composition. With the composition of the P(St-co-Bd) segment increased from 0.37 to 0.92, the morphology within the structured particles changed from the polybutadiene domains-in-polystyrene matrix, perforated concentric-spherical layer, concentric-spherical multi-layers, bi-continuous, to broken layers of polystyrene in polybutadiene matrix. It was found that the morphology of the block copolymer within nanoparticles was dependent on d/L values, which was in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:Multiblock polymers were prepared by combination of ATRP (CuBr/tris[(2-pyridyl)methyl]amine) and RAFT polymerization involving cyclic trithiocarbonate (CTTC). In the combined polymerization system, the ATRP was introduced as constant radical source, CTTC underwent ring-opening polymerization, and the incorporated trithiocarbonate moieties derived from CTTCs performed as RAFT agent. Through the integrated process, multiblock polymers containing predictable average block number together with controlled molecular weight of the blocks were prepared by one-pot polymerization. The average block number of polymer was controlled by concentration ratio of CTTC to alkyl halide in ARTP, and the molecular weight of block were well regulated by concentration of CTTC and monomer conversion.

Abstract:We report a novel modular strategy for the synthesis of block copolymers via the combination of a macromolecular azo coupling reaction and a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization method. One block, with a terminus suitable for an azo coupling reaction, was obtained by RAFT polymerization using a synthesized chain transfer agent (CTA) with the designed functional group. The other block, with a diazonium salt terminus, was obtained by the diazotization of aniline-functionalized PEG, which was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution reaction between the synthesized tosylate ended mPEG and p-aminobenzoic acid. The macromolecular azo coupling reaction between the above two polymer blocks was carried out in a polar organic solvent such as DMF under extremely mild conditions. Block copolymers with well-defined structures can be efficiently prepared through this approach.
Synthesis of (Hard-Soft-hard)x Multiblock Copolymers Via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization and Mechanical Enhancement Via Block Architectures

Abstract:A large variety of block copolymers have become accessible due to the advances in controlled/living radical polymerization. However, it remains scarcely explored that how one can improve the properties of block copolymers via the chain architectures. Herein, three sets of well-defined multiblock copolymers (SBAS)(x) (S for poly(styrene)(180) and BA for poly(n-butyl acrylate) blocks) with 25, 33, and 50 wt% PS are synthesized via RAFT emulsion polymerization. All three sets of (SBAS)(x) are weak/mild phase separated. Compared with their SBAS counterparts, all tensile properties of (SBAS)(2) are enhanced. Particularly interestingly, both the tensile strength and toughness are simultaneously much enhanced but the modulus is less influenced. It is suggested that a soft yet strong and tough elastomer could be synthesized via changing widely-applied hard-soft-hard triblock copolymers to (hard-soft-hard)(2) pentablock copolymers. The enhancement of mechanical properties increases as the increase of PnBA composition. In the case of 75 wt% PnBA, the tensile strength, toughness, and modulus of (SBAS)(2) are enhanced by a factor of 2.73, 2.51 and 1.30. (SBAS)(2) also show better mechanical properties than its counterpart of triblock copolymer S(2)BA(2)S(2) with close molecular weight which is strongly phase separated. It is suggested that the combination of pulling-out end PS blocks and bridging middle PS blocks might contribute to the mechanical enhancement of (SBAS)(2), simultaneously in toughness and tensile strength.

Abstract:In reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, monomers are divided into "more-activated" monomers (type-A(1) monomer) and "less-activated" monomers (type-A(2) monomer). In ring-opening polymerization (ROP), monomers are considered to fall into electrophilically polymerizable monomers (lactones and carbonates, type-B-1 monomer) and nucleophilically polymerizable monomers (lactides and carbonates, type-B-2 monomer). Developing a strategy to copolymerize the four kinds of monomers for formation of asymmetric A(2)A(1)B(1)B(2) type tetrablock quaterpolymers by one-pot sequential ROP and RAFT polymerization is a challenge. Herein, we designed and synthesized a molecule, 2-hydroxyethyl 2-(methyl(pyridin-4-yl)carbamothioylthio)propanoate, which functioned as a trifunctional initiator, to initiate ROPs and to modulate RAFT polymerizations sequentially in one-pot. We proposed a dual "acid/base switch" strategy in both RAFT polymerizations and ROPs for one-pot generation of asymmetric A(2)A(1)B(1)B(2) type tetrablock quaterpolymers. A series of di-, tri-, and tetrablock copolymers were synthesized and showed predicted molar mass and narrow dispersities, manifesting that the ROPs and RAFT polymerizations proceeded independently in controlled manners. The dual "acid/base switch" strategy paved a new avenue to combine RAFT polymerizations and ROPs for synthesis of designed copolymers with advanced functionalities and architectures.

Abstract:The synthesis of block copolymers of poly(tetrahydrofuran)-b-poly(α-amino acid)(PTHF-b-PAA) is challenging since it is difficult to combine the two blocks produced via different/conflicting ring-opening polymerization(ROP) mechanisms. In this contribution, the cationic ROP of THF is catalyzed by rare-earth triflate [RE(OTf) 3 ] and terminated by 2-(t-butyloxycarbonyl-amino) ethanol(BAE). After the deprotection of tbutyloxycarbonyl(Boc) group, the chain end of PTHF is quantitatively changed to amino group which thereafter initiates the nucleophilic ROP ofα-amino acid N-thiocarboxyanhydrides(NTAs). Both polymerizations are well controlled, generating PTHF and PAA segments with designable molecular weights(MWs). PTHF-b-polylysine(PTHF-b-PLys) and PTHF-b-polysarcosine(PTHF-b-PSar) are obtained with MWs between 8.6 and28.7 kg/mol. The above amphiphilic diblock copolymers form micelles in water. PTHF 40 -b-PSar 32 acts as a surfactant to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions. Both segments of PTHF-b-PAA are biocompatible and promising in the biomedical application.
Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic ABA Type Triblock Copolymer with Well-Defined Glycopolymer Segments

Abstract:A novel amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was successfully synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique, using a bromo-terminated difunctional polysulfone as macroinitiator. The difunctional polysulfone macroinitiator was prepared by esterifying the phenolic end groups of polysulfone to α-haloesters. This macroinitiator was then used to initiate the polymerization of a glucose-carrying monomer, 3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose (MAIpG), resulting an ABA type triblock copolymer. After acidolysis treatment, the isopropylidenyl groups of the protected sugar residues were removed, thus the amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was obtained. The polymers obtained were identified by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, and TGA. The self-assembly behavior of the amphiphilic glycopolymer in selective solvent (e.g. DMF/H2O) system was also preliminarily explored. The resultant amphiphilic glycopolymer shows potential applications in the fields of controlled release and delivery of drugs, micro-reactors, nano-materials, medical devices, and so on.

Abstract:The synthesis of multiblock copolymers has emerged as an efficient tool to not only reveal the optimal way to access complex structures and investigate polymer properties but also to ascertain the end-group fidelity of a given polymerization methodology. Although reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization is arguably the most dominant strategy employed, its success is often hampered by the unavoidable and excessive use of radical initiators which results in increased termination and loss of end-group fidelity. In this work, we employ acid in RAFT polymerization to enhance the synthesis of multiblock copolymers. By the addition of a small amount of acid, a 4-fold decrease in the overall required radical initiator concentration was achieved, enabling the synthesis of a range of well-defined multiblock copolymers with various degrees of polymerization (DP) per block. The acid enhances the propagation rate, minimizing the initiator concentration. In all cases, near-quantitative monomer conversion was obtained (>97%) for every iterative block formation step. Notably, and in contrast to conventional RAFT approaches, the tailing to low molecular weight was significantly suppressed and the dispersity was maintained nearly constant ( i.e. in most cases Đ = 1.1–1.2), thus indicating minor termination events and side reactions during acid-enhanced synthesis. The possibility to synthesize multiblocks consisting of methacrylates, acrylates, and acrylamides was also demonstrated. This work presents an advancement in the synthesis of well-defined multiblock copolymers and more broadly, RAFT polymers with high end-group fidelity.

Abstract:Two or more distinctive polymer chains are connected in one macromolecular chain to form block copolymers. Their excellent properties attract intense commercial and academic interests. This article introduces briefly the structures and properties of block copolymers. In the several different approaches of synthesizing block copolymers, we primarily summarize the recent progress in the research and development on the preparation of block copolymers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation transfer ( RAFT). The effects of sequence of the monomer addition, the end group of macroiniliator,monomer reactivity, the initiation efficiency of the macroinitiator.ligand and transfer constant of macro-transfer agent on block copolymerization are also discussed.

Abstract:Block copolymers, polystyrene-b-poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride), have been prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique using three different approaches: 1-phenylethyl phenyldithioacetate (PEPDTA) directly as RAFT agent, mediated polystyrene (PS) block as the macromolecular PS-RAFT agent and mediated poly(styrenemaleic anhydride) (SMA) block with alternating sequence as the macromolecular SMA-RAFT agent. Copolymers synthesized in the one-step method using PEPDTA as RAFT agent possess one PS block and one SMA block with gradient structure. When the macromolecular RAFT agents are employed, copolymers with one PS block and one alternating SMA block can be produced. However, block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD) can only be obtained using the PS-RAFT agent. Abstract:Well-defined PS-b-PS/Bd diblock copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization instead of anionic polymerization, which was environmental friendly, energy and cost saving for most monomers. In order to precisely design styrene/butadiene block with targeted composition profile given the feeding program, binary monomers RAFT miniemulsion polymerization kinetic models were formulated. In butadiene RAFT seeded miniemulsion polymerization, it was well performed, and the RAFT equilibrium constant between butadiene and 1-phenylethyl phenyldithioacetate(PEPDTA) was estimated to be 18.3 L/mol × s at 70 °C. Furthermore, the modeling curves could well predict styrene/butadiene RAFT miniemulsion polymerization kinetics, including monomers conversion, volume fraction of monomers, number-average molecular weight and composition. The copolymers were characterized by fourier translation infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(1H-NMR), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). FT-IR and 1H-NMR results indicated that the microstructure of the polymer was mainly 1, 4-trans butadiene with small amount of 1, 2-units. Microphase morphologies of the copolymers were lamellar, cylinder and disordered phase by TEM, which was identical to self-consistent field calculations. And thermal property results showed that glass transition behaviors were corresponding with their microphase separation, sequence length and composition from DSC.

Abstract:Polystyrene–styrene/butadiene diblock copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization. During the polymerization process, the molecular weight distribution was narrow and the numerical molecular weight of the copolymers increased with increasing conversion of monomers, which was close to the theoretical. FT-IR and 1H NMR results indicated that the microstructure of the polymer was mainly 1,4-trans-butadiene with small amount of 1,2-units, and composition in the copolymers was obtained.
