Abstract:The tactics of targeting copolymer composition (CC) and molecular weight (MW) via semibatch controlled radical polymerization (CRP) have been extensively studied. However, little effort is made to target copolymer sequence length (CSL) and its triad sequence, which are among the key microstructures determining material properties of the copolymers. This work presents a method to design and synthesize targeted CSL and copolymer triads in a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical mini-emulsion copolymerization system (RAFT) through a semibatch chain and sequence model coupled with Alfrey Mayo model. The kinetic model was first derived and correlated with experimental results of the batch St/BA copolymerizations. The semibatch RAFT model was then employed to calculate the feed-rate to target CSL and their triads. St/BA copolymers with different uniform CSLs and their triads are synthesized through the programmed semibatch RAFT mini-emulsion copolymerization processes.

Abstract:Chain transfer reactions widely exist in the free radical polymerization and controlled radical polymerization, which can significantly influence polymer molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. In this work, the chain transfer reactions in modeling the reversible addition-fragmentation transfer (RAFT) solution copolymerization are included and the effects of chain transfer rate constant, monomer concentration, and comonomer ratio on the polymerization kinetics and polymer molecular weight development are investigated. The model is verified with the experimental RAFT solution copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate, with good agreements achieved. This work has demonstrated that the chain transfer reactions to monomer and solvent can have significant impacts on the number-average molecular weight (M-n) and dispersity (D).

Abstract:Copolymer composition distribution (CCD) is an important parameter of chain microstructure that has significant impact on the material properties of polymer products. Controlled/living radical polymerization (CLRP) has provided a great opportunity in producing polymers with predesigned CCDs through a model-based monomer feeding policy (MMFP) in homogeneous systems. In this work, the MMFP has been expanded to heterogeneous systems. Reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) mini-emulsion polymerizations of styrene (St) and butyl acrylate (BA) were carried out with 3-benzyltrithiocarbonyl propionic acid (BCPA) used as a RAFT agent. A kinetic model was developed and correlated to the batch St/BA RAFT mini-emulsion experimental data for parameter estimation. The MMFP was then developed by combining the kinetic model with a semibatch reactor model and applied to the semibatch St/BA RAFT mini-emulsion copolymerization for the synthesis of targeted CCDs. The model agreed well with the polymerization kinetics. A series of St/BA copolymers with predesigned CCDs were successfully synthesized.

Abstract:Construction of block copolymers is a practical method for modifying the properties of CO2-based polycarbonates (CO2-PCs) in order to meet specific needs. Herein, we report a well-defined single-site beta-diiminate zinc complex 1 equipped with the capacities of coordination copolymerization of CO2/epoxide and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of vinyl monomers. Complex 1 is specifically designed to possess a 3-(benzylthiocarbonothioylthio)propionate (BSTP) initiating group, which enables the controlled ring-opening copolymerization of epoxides and CO2, leaving a polycarbonate with BSTP functional group at the end of the chain. The end-capped BSTP allows direct chain extension via living RAFT polymerization, thus providing a robust construct various CO2-based block copolymers in one pot via a tandem catalysis strategy. The structure of 1 is established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as well as H-1 and C-13 NMR By utilizing 1, a wide range of CO2-based block copolymers including poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PCHC-b-PDMAEMA), poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-polystyrene (PCHC-b-PS), and poly(cyclohexene carbonate)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PCHC-bPNIPAM) with controlled molecular weight and compositions are prepared. These block copolymers are fully characterized by DSC, H-1 NMR, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Especially, a thermoresponsive PCHC-b-PNIPAM copolymer is for the first time synthesized as a functional nanomaterial. The complex and catalytic process provided here offers a straightforward catalytic access to CO2-based block copolymers.
One-pot Synthesis of Octablock Copolymers of High-Molecular Weight Via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract:Multiblock copolymers (mBCPs) could offer new opportunities to design new nanomaterials with multifunctions or enhanced properties in a cost-effective way. However, it is still very challenging to obtain high degree of polymerization in each block of mBCPs with large block number using one-pot synthesis via controlled radical polymerizations. This is due to the accumulation of the dead chains throughout the many step polymerization. In this work, we developed a new highly efficient strategy for preparing mBCPs with large block number using one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization, where every polymer block was formed by sequential addition of monomers. We achieved high block degree of polymerizations (similar to 100 per block) for a model system of "octablock" polystyrene (PS) in just 2 hr per block. Experimentally measured molecular weights are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The dead chains generated through the polymerization are negligible due to the low initiator concentration. Yet the polymerization rates are still very fast due to the heterogeneous advantages of emulsion polymerization. We have also applied this strategy to a series of mBCPs from diblock (PS176-PnBA(286))(1) to octablock (PS176-PnBA(286))(4) (PnBA for poly(n-butyl acrylate)). The high degree of polymerization in our mBCPs ensures microphase separation even though PS/PnBA system is known for small chi values. We have also found that the tensile properties of our mBCPs increase significantly with increased number of blocks. Our work reveals that the number of blocks is an important molecular variable for tuning the mechanical properties of block copolymers.
The Synthesis of High Molecular Weight Block Copolymers by Raft Polymerization

Abstract:RAFT polymerization is a type of psudo-living radical polymerization. In order to synthesize high pure block copolymers by RAFT polymerization, it is desirable to suppress the irreversible termination which may result in the formation of dead chains. For polymers less than 5 x 10(4) g/mol, the dead chain fraction could remain to be lower than 0.1 by reducing the initiator concentration. In the synthesis of block copolymers, the dead chains formed in the first stage are actually contaminant. Targeting to the synthesis of high pure block copolymers with high molecular weight using RAFT polymerization, we studied the copolymerization of butyl acrylate and styrene mediated by 1-phenylethyl phenyl-dithioacetate (PEPDTA) as a RAFT agent. The influences of the type of initiators (AIBN (2-2'-azobis ( isobutyronitrile)), ACC ( 1-1'-azobis ( cyclohexane-carbonitrile)), the concentrations of initiator and polymerization temperature on the copolymerization kinetics and molecular weight and its distribution were investigated. When AIBN was used, the polymerization would stop at middle monomer conversion, which limited the increase of molecular weight of the copolymer if we reduced the initiator concentration. It was found that only with the initiator (ACC) with small decomposition rate constant and high polymerization temperature, the block copolymer with high molecular weight and small fraction of dead chains ( < 0.1) could be synthesized. The reason for these quite strict requirements is that the initiator concentration should remain far below that of the conventional radical polymerization, which is limited by the very low RAFT concentration.

Abstract:Mixtures of symmetric diblock copolymers and rigid nanorods (NRs) that are preferentially wetted by one of the blocks (A) are systematically investigated via dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The morphology of such composites depends not only on the characteristics of the copolymers, but also on the physical or chemical features of the NRs, such as NR volume fraction, size, and polymer-NR interaction. We find that the presence of NRs influences the phase behavior of copolymers and the phase-separated domains of copolymers in turn confine the NRs spatial distribution and positional orientation. The morphologies and phase transitions of hybrids and the corresponding NRs distributed and oriented regularities can be rationalized on the basis of the relative enthalpic and entropic effects involving all of the species, A and B blocks, and NRs. These results suggest that by choosing appropriate parameters, our model systems may provide a prediction to control and design the high-performance composites.

Abstract:It is well-known that controlled/living radical copolymerization (CLRcoP) yields gradient copolymer with the composition varying along chain length. The composition distribution of the as-synthesized product is solely determined by the comonomer reactivity ratios and is thus not well controlled. This work reports the first experimental example of the control over the copolymer composition distribution through semibatch operations. Using styrene (St)/butyl acrylate (BA) as a model system, we synthesized uniform and linear gradient copolymers via semibatch reverse addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization (RAFT) mediated by benzyl dithioisobutyrate. The comonomer feeding rate profiles for the targeted distributions were designed from a newly developed computer model that was trained from the batch RAFT copolymerizations of St and BA at different monomer compositions. The semibatch copolymerization yielded precise copolymer products having their composition distributions exactly as targeted and the polymerization rate and molecular weight profiles as predicted by the model.

Abstract:<p>Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is an efficient and robust strategy to fabricate polymeric nano-objects. PISA enables us to prepare polymeric nano-objects in situ during the course of polymerization in concentrated solution (up to 50% w/w), making industrial production of polymeric assemblies in large-scale possible. In this work, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion copolymerization of styrene (St) and N-methacryloxysuccinimide (NMAS) was conducted with poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) as a macro-chain transfer agent (macro-CTA) in methanol. Compared with the PHEA-mediated alcoholic dispersion polymerization of St, RAFT dispersion copolymerization of St and NMAS promoted morphology transition of nano-objects to form higher order morphologies (such as worms and vesicles). Moreover, the introduction of NMAS units into the solvophobic blocks provided functional handles for post-PISA modification of the resultant nano-objects via the active ester-amine reaction. The reaction of 1,6-hexanediamine with NMAS units in P(St-<em>co</em>-NMAS) blocks was conducted to afford cross-linked nano-objects with robust structural stability.</p>

Abstract:With controlled/living radical copolymerization, the composition profile along polymer chains becomes a tunable parameter in preparing copolymer products for novel materials properties. In this work, a novel series of styrene/butyl acrylate (St/BA) copolymers with precisely designed composition profiles (uniform, linear gradient, tanh gradient, and triblock with a linear gradient mid-block) were produced using a semibatch reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer copolymerization mediated by benzyl dithioisobutyrate. The comonomer feeding rate was programmed based on a kinetic model with the targeted composition profile as an objective functions. The experimental composition and molecular weight profiles agreed very well with the model predictions. The polymer molecular weight distributions were narrow with polydispersity index values about 1.3. The amount of dead chains was controlled below 10%. The glass transition behaviors of the St/BA copolymers were evaluated and their T-g values were found to be in an order of uniform < linear gradient < tanh gradient < triblock with 10 degrees C for uniforrn and 140 degrees C for triblock copolymers. Abstract:This article presents the recent developments of radical dispersion polymerizaton controlled by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) for the production of block copolymer particles of various morphologies, such as core-shell spheres, worms, or vesicles. It is not meant to be an exhaustive review but it rather provides guidelines for non-specialists. The article is subdivided into eight sections. After a general introduction, the mechanism of polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) through RAFT-mediated dispersion polymerization is presented and the different parameters that control the morphology produced are discussed. The next two sections are devoted to the choice of the monomer/solvent pair and the macroRAFT agent. Afterwards, post-polymerization morphological order-to-order transitions (i.e. morphological transitions triggered by extrinsic stimuli) or order-to-disorder transitions (i.e. disassembly of chains) are discussed. Assemblies based on more complex polymer architectures, such as triblock copolymers, are presented next, and finally the possibility to stabilize these structures by crosslinking is reported. The manuscript ends with a short conclusion and an outlook.

Abstract:Heterogeneous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization coupled with polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) can be performed through either RAFT emulsion polymerization or RAFT dispersion polymerization, providing opportunities for the synthesis of block copolymers with low dispersities and polymer nanoparticles with various morphologies. In this study, we have demonstrated the successful transition from photoinitiated RAFT emulsion polymerization to photoinitiated RAFT dispersion polymerization by solely changing the solvent composition from water to water/ethanol. Kinetic studies indicated that a slower polymerization was observed at a higher ethanol content. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) analysis demonstrated that narrower molecular weight distributions were achieved as increasing the ethanol content due to the faster radical diffusion within the micellar core. The dispersity of block copolymer can be changed by varying the ethanol content used in photoinitiated heterogeneous RAFT polymerization. Moreover, reaction temperature has also been explored as a parameter to control the diffusion of radicals within the micellar core and therefore dispersities of block copolymers. Finally, the morphological evolution of block copolymer nanoparticles during the transition from RAFT emulsion polymerization to RAFT dispersion polymerization was also investigated. The present study is anticipated to significantly expand the scope of heterogeneous RAFT polymerization by allowing access to a wide range of block copolymers with different dispersities and polymer nanoparticles with diverse morphologies.

Abstract:Differently from bulk, solution, suspension, emulsion, and miniemulsion polymerizations, the controlled radical dispersion polymerization (CRDP) demonstrates self-assembly of the block copolymers formed in the homogeneous system, forming various kinds of micelles or vesicles. Thus, this technology can prepare both the block copolymers and the polymeric aggregates directly. Among CRDP, the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization has been studied in relative detail and has been successfully developed to prepare a diverse range of assemblies. Several typical systems for RAFT dispersion polymerization are presented in detail and the factors influencing the polymerization and the in situ self-assembly are also highlighted in this minireview.

Abstract:Monodisperse surface-functional polymeric microspheres prepared by the photoinitiated reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization offer promising potential for diverse applications due to their high uniformity, size tunability, and variable coronal and core chemistries. However, this method strongly relies on the unique characteristics of photoinitiation, which hinders scale-up and the preparation of functional microspheres (e.g., colored microspheres). Here, we demonstrate a successful transition from photoinitiation to thermal initiation in RAFT dispersion polymerization via the chain extension of a short solvophobic block to the macro-RAFT agent to access monodisperse surface-functional polymeric microspheres. Mechanistic insights into the polymerization process were provided, demonstrating the importance of the solvophobic block in the formation of monodisperse polymeric microspheres. It was found that the solvophobic block not only enhances the anchoring ability of the stabilizer toward particles but also promotes nucleation. Furthermore, thermally initiated RAFT dispersion polymerization can be employed to access scalable, monodisperse, size-tunable, and molecular-weight-tunable polymeric microspheres with diverse surface functionality. Significantly, thermally initiated RAFT dispersion polymerization becomes robust to the presence of functional species, allowing the one-step preparation of cross-linked, surface-functional polymeric microspheres with high uniformity. This approach to monodisperse surface-functional polymeric microspheres overcomes the complications of photoinitiation to facilitate eventual scale-up as well as the preparation of functional polymeric microspheres for some specific applications.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly via reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT)-mediated emulsion polymerization has served as a versatile platform for scalable preparation of well-defined block copolymer nanoparticles. However, kinetically trapped spherical micelles rather than higher-order morphologies are typically prepared by RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization. Moreover, the mechanism for morphological evolution under RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization conditions is still unclear. Herein, we report a redox-initiated RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization of methacrylic monomers at relatively low temperatures. A diverse set of morphologies have been prepared by using glycidyl methacrylate (GlyMA) as the core-forming monomer. Effects of reaction temperature, molecular weight of macro-RAFT agent, degree of polymerization of PGlyMA, and monomer concentration on RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization have been studied in detail. To give more insights into the mechanism of morphological evolution, other methacrylic monomers were also employed for RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization. Finally, taking advantage of the intrinsic mechanism of RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization, cross-linking has been explored for the preparation of higher-order morphologies. The current study not only expands the scope of RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization for preparing various block copolymer nano-objects but also provides important insights into the morphological evolution under RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization conditions.

Abstract:In this Perspective, we discuss the recent development of polymerization-induced self-assembly mediated by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization. This approach has quickly become a powerful and versatile technique for the synthesis of a wide range of bespoke organic diblock copolymer nano-objects of controllable size, morphology, and surface functionality. Given its potential scalability, such environmentally-friendly formulations are expected to offer many potential applications, such as novel Pickering emulsifiers, efficient microencapsulation vehicles, and sterilizable thermo-responsive hydrogels for the cost-effective long-term storage of mammalian cells.

Abstract:One pot in situ preparation of poly(acrylic acid)-block-polystyrene (PAA-b-PSt) or poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(acrylic acid-ran-styrene) (PAA-b-P(AA-r-St)) diblock copolymer nano-objects with multiple morphologies was developed through dispersion RAFT polymerization in ethanol/water mixtures mediated by hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-based macromolecular RAFT agents. The polymerization shows characteristic features of living/controlled radical polymerization and the experimental results are confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and H-1 NMR. The effects of various parameters including the monomer conversion, St/AA feed ratio and solvent composition on the morphologies of PAA-b-PSt diblock copolymer nano-objects were investigated in detail. A faster polymerization rate was observed with increasing content of water in mixture solvents, and three stages with two clear turning points at which the rate was enhanced were observed during the polymerization process. Spherical micelles, worms, vesicles, and lacunal nanospheres have been obtained for PAA-b-PSt with the extension of the PSt block in 70/30, 80/20 and 90/10 w/w ethanol/water mixtures. Our results demonstrate that the interesting lacunal morphology of PAA-b-PSt diblock copolymer assembly can be successfully prepared and tuned at high styrene conversion. More interestingly, the residual AA, which was introduced to prepare the random P(AA-r-St) block, can promote the evolution of the copolymer aggregate morphology from spherical micelles to worms and pure vesicles in 90/10 and 80/20 w/w ethanol/water mixtures. The copolymerization of the residual hydrophilic monomer can be a convenient and effective method to tune the morphology and size of the block copolymer aggregates via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Finally, the in situ formation of silver/polymer composite nanoparticles was demonstrated, suggesting excellent applications in catalysis.
