Abstract:We present designs of organic solar cells (OSCs) incorporating periodically arranged gradient type active layer. The designs can enhance light harvesting with patterned organic materials themselves (i.e. self-enhanced active layer design) to avoid degrading electrical performances of OSCs in contrast to introducing inorganic concentrators into OSC active layers such as silicon and metallic nanostructures. Geometry of the OSC is fully optimized by rigorously solving Maxwell's equations with fast and efficient scattering matrix method. Optical absorption is accessed by a volume integral of the active layer excluding the metallic absorption. Our numerical results show that the OSC with a self-enhanced active layer, compared with the conventional planar active layer configuration, has broadband and wide-angle range absorption enhancement due to better geometric impedance matching and prolonged optical path. This work provides a theoretical foundation and engineering reference for high performance OSC designs.
Wide-gap non-fullerene acceptor enabling high-performance organic photovoltaic cells for indoor applications

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic cells are potential candidates to drive low power consumption off-grid electronics for indoor applications. However, their power conversion efficiency is still limited by relatively large losses in the open-circuit voltage and a non-optimal absorption spectrum for indoor illumination. Here, we carefully designed a non-fullerene acceptor named IO-4Cl and blend it with a polymer donor named PBDB-TF to obtain a photoactive layer whose absorption spectrum matches that of indoor light sources. The photovoltaic characterizations reveal a low energy loss below 0.60 eV. As a result, the organic photovoltaic cell (1 cm2) shows a power conversion efficiency of 26.1% with an open-circuit voltage of 1.10 V under a light-emitting diode illumination of 1,000 lux (2,700 K). We also fabricated a large-area cell (4 cm2) through the blade-coating method. Our cell shows an excellent stability, maintaining its initial photovoltaic performance under continuous illumination of the indoor light source for 1,000 hours.

Abstract:Organic solar cells have received widespread attention with the development of indoor light harvesters. Due to the narrow emission spectra and weak light intensity of indoor emissions, the short-circuit current of indoor devices is largely restricted, and there will be an additional voltage loss around 0.15 V from the light intensity difference. However, most state-of-the-art cells cannot be adopted as indoor photovoltaics directly, because their small optical bandgaps lead to open-circuit voltage (VOC) values in the range of ∼0.6 V in dim-lighting, which is difficult to drive most of internet of things. Herein, we revaluate the photovoltaic performance under indoor illuminances by combining a wide-gap polymer PBDB-T with various electron-accepting materials. The PBDB-T: BTA3 cell achieves an excellent efficiency higher than 25% under a 1000 lux 2700K LED illumination. Surprisingly, the VOC value of such a device can still maintain close to 1 V under indoor cases. We then compare the underlying mechanism of the PBDB-T-based bulk heterojunctions (BHJs) with multiple techniques, and the results indicate the unchanged advantage of high VOC helps the BTA3-based cell shows the best indoor device performance when the light source is switched from AM1.5G to low illumination. This work revaluate the selection of state-of-the-art indoor light harvesters, and demonstrate an excellent optimal efficiency of the PBDB-T:BTA3 indoor cell up to 25.6%, with a desirable VOC of 0.99 V.

Abstract:Indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) are favored for their speciality to provide sustainable and reliable energy for low-power electronic devices. As an ideal IPVs material, perovskite has been well explored in recent years. Herein, we focus on enhancing the photoelectric properties of the perovskite crystal under low light. By introducing N,N′-bis(dimethylaminopropyl-N‴-oxide)-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxidiimide (PDINO) into the perovskite, the crystallinity degree of the perovskite films are proven to be improved by synchrotron-based grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, thereby effectively enhancing the exciton transmission and separation in the perovskite. By using ultrafast spectroscopy, the influence of the optimized charge separation inside the perovskite under low light has been systematically analyzed. The final optimal perovskite solar cell showed an impressive indoor power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 37.9% under 1000 lux low light, and a PCE of 21.3% under 1 sun illumination. These findings proved doping of the perovskite by strong electron acceptors as a valid strategy for efficient charge transport, paving the way to their applications as IPVs.

Abstract:Indoor organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have shown great potential application in driving low energy consumption electronics of Internet of Things. There is still great room for further improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of indoor OPVs, considering that the desired morphology to reduce the trap-assisted recombination and voltage losses, and thus simultaneously enhance the fill factor (FF) and open-circuit voltage for efficient indoor OPVs still remains obscure. Herein, by optimizing the bulk and interface morphology via layer-by-layer (LBL) processing strategy the low leakage current and low non-radiative recombination loss can be synergistically achieved in PM6:Y6-O based devices. Detailed characterizations reveal the stronger crystallinity, purer domain and ideal interfacial contacts in LBL devices, compared to their bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) counterparts. The optimized morphology yields a reduced voltage loss and an impressive FF of 81.5%, and thus contributes to a high PCE of 31.2% under 1000 lux light-emitting diode (LED) in LBL devices, which is the best reported efficiency for indoor OPVs. Besides, this LBL strategy exhibits great universality in promoting the performance of indoor OPVs, as exemplified by two other non-fullerene acceptor systems. This work provides the guidelines for morphology optimization and synergistically promotes the fast development of efficiently indoor OPVs.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Due to the continuous development and advances in the Internet of Things, wireless sensors, actuators for human−interactive machines, and indoor low-power devices require a continuous supply of energy. Photovoltaic cells working under indoor light are suitable candidates for charging these devices because of their high voltages (up to 5 V), low costs, and environmental friendliness. Herein, the research on organic photovoltaic, dye-sensitized, and perovskite cells in indoor photovoltaic applications with respect to the active layer, modified layer, and preparation process is summarized. The performance enhancement of indoor photovoltaic cells is outlined, including photoactive material selection, bandgap optimization, modification layer function, and device structure design, followed by the prospects and challenges of future developments in indoor photovoltaic cells. With this review an important perspective for the advancement of indoor photovoltaics is offered.</section>

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic (OPV) technologies have the advantages of fabricating larger‐area and light‐weight solar panels on flexible substrates by low‐cost roll‐to‐toll production. Recently, OPV cells have achieved many significant advances with power conversion efficiency (PCE) increasing rapidly. However, large‐scale solar farms using OPV modules still face great challenges, such as device stability. Herein, the applications of OPV cells in indoor light environments are studied. Via optimizing the active layers to have a good match with the indoor light source, 1 cm2 OPV cells are fabricated and a top PCE of 22% under 1000 lux light‐emitting diode (2700 K) illumination is demonstrated. In this work, the light intensities are measured carefully. Incorporated with the external quantum efficiency and photon flux spectrum, the integral current densities of the cells are calculated to confirm the reliability of the photovoltaic measurement. In addition, the devices show much better stability under continuous indoor light illumination. The results suggest that designing wide‐bandgap active materials to meet the requirements for the indoor OPV cells has a great potential in achieving higher photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:A ternary strategy coupled with an optical nanostructured coating is applied to realize high‐performance indoor organic photovoltaics, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 29.07%. By employing a 2D photonic‐structured antireflection coating, the device also maintains efficiency even at oblique light incidences, demonstrating omnidirectional effectiveness and promising sustainable applications for indoor energy harvesting. Indoor organic photovoltaics (IOPVs) with tunable absorption spectra and relatively high power conversion efficiency (PCE) have emerged as one of the most promising energy sources for Internet of Things devices, but enhancing the device performance under various directions of indoor illumination is challenging. Herein, it is proposed to combine omnidirectional optical engineering and ternary strategy for achieving high‐performance IOPVs. The advantage is taken of a ternary bulk heterojunction (BHJ) with a polymer donor having aligned absorption spectra with the light‐emitting diode (LED) spectrum and a guest component that not only blueshifts the near‐infrared absorption of the acceptor but also improves electrical and morphological properties of the BHJ. A 2D photonic‐structured antireflection coating is further developed to selectively improve the light absorption of IOPVs, leading to a PCE of 29.07% under 1000 lux LED illumination. More importantly, the antireflection coating maintains the initial PCE even when irradiated by light incident at large angles, demonstrating an omnidirectional effectiveness. This weaker angular dependency on light absorption provides practical prospects for future sustainable indoor photovoltaic systems.

Abstract:Efficient indoor organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have attracted strong attention for their application in indoor electronic devices. However, the route to optimal photoactive film morphology toward high-performance indoor devices has remained obscure. The leakage current dominated by morphology exerts distinguishing influence on the performance under different illuminations. We have demonstrated that morphology reoptimization plays an important role in indoor OPVs, and their optimal structural features are different from what we laid out for outdoor devices. For indoor OPVs, in order to facilitate low leakage current, it is essential to enhance the crystallinity, phase separation, and domain purity, as well as keeping small surface roughness of the active layer. Furthermore, considering the reduced bimolecular recombination at low light intensity, we have shown that PM6:M36-based indoor devices can work effectively with a large ratio of the donor and acceptor. Abstract:Organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells have found their potential applications in the harvest of indoor light photons. However, the output power of such indoor devices is usually far from the demand of the internet of things. Therefore, it is essential to boost the output power of indoor organic photovoltaics to a much higher level. As wildly deployed among industrial and civil luminous environments, thermal radiation-based indoor light sources are alternative candidates to supply the essential power of the off-grid electronics with a broad consecutive emission spectrum. In this work, we evaluated the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells under indoor incandescent and halogen illuminations. Impressively, under such thermal radiations, an improvement over 500% of the output power density can be achieved in comparison with that under light-emitting diodes and fluorescent lamps, reaching a record high value of 279.1 μW cm−2 by the PM6:Y6-based device. The remarkable power output is originated from the extra near-infrared spectrum of indoor thermal lights, which restricts the effective area under 10 cm2 in achieving 1 mW output power. This work clarifies the feasibility of collecting photons radiated from indoor thermal light sources through OPV cells, and enlightens the further applications of indoor OPV cells under multiple illumination environments.

Abstract:The application of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells to drive off-grid microelectronic devices under indoor light has attracted broad attention. As organic semiconductors intrinsically have less ordered intermolecular packing than inorganic materials, the relatively larger energetic disorder is one of the main results that limit the photovoltaic efficiency of the OPV cells at low carrier density. Here, we optimize the alkyl chains of non-fullerene acceptors to get suppressed energetic disorder. We find the optimal acceptor DTz-R1 with the shortest alkyl chain has the strongest crystalline property and lowest energetic disorder. As a result, over 26% efficiency is recorded for the 1 cm 2 OPV cells under a light-emitting diode illumination of 500 lux. We also fabricate a 100 cm 2 cell device and get a PCE of 23.0%, which is an outstanding value for large-area OPV cells. These results suggest that modulation of the energetic disorder is of great importance for further improving the efficiency of OPV cells, especially for indoor applications.
Insights into the photovoltaic mechanism of organic photovoltaics under solar and artificial light

Abstract:Indoor organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have attracted a lot of attention due to their low energy consumption for applications such as Internet of Things (IoT) and wearable technology. However, the mechanisms influencing the indoor power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OPVs are not very well understood. In this study, we investigated how the active layer based on different acceptor materials, fullerene and non-fullerene, affects the performance of the device. Under indoor light, the optimal thickness of non-fullerene-based OPVs (PBDB-T:ITIC) is 140 nm with a PCE of 19.74% and the optimal thickness of fullerene-based OPVs (PBDB-T:PC 71 BM) is 100 nm with a PCE of 16.22%. Our study systematically investigated the electrical performance and carrier behavior of different active layers under two light sources (1-Sun and indoor light). We found that the indoor PCE of the non-fullerene system is less affected by the thickness, mainly because the thicker non-fullerene active layer film still maintains good series resistance ( R s ), shunt resistance ( R sh ), and less charge recombination. Our study points out that the key factors affecting the indoor PCE of OPVs are R sh , monomolecular recombination, and trap depth, revealing new insights into achieving high indoor PCE of OPVs.

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells have exhibited great advantages for indoor applications. However, large energetic disorder restricts the performance of OPV cells under low illuminance, which brings significant challenges for indoor applications. Here, we demonstrate that concentrated indoor light can suppress the effects of energetic disorder and simultaneously enhance the open-circuit voltage and fill factor of OPV cells. Remarkably, PB2:FCC-Cl-based cells achieve a state-of-the-art PCE of 33.0% when concentrating indoor light to 20,000 lux. Meanwhile, all OPV cells exhibit superior stability under concentrated indoor light due to mild lighting conditions. Especially for the PBDB-TF:Y6 system exhibiting the best morphological stability, an extrapolated intrinsic lifetime is over 30,000 h. Combined with optical waveguide concentrators, we also reveal that concentrating OPV cells have the potential for low-cost manufacturing. These results suggest that developing concentrating OPV cells is quite necessary for indoor applications in the future.

Abstract:Indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) are garnering increasing attention from both the academic and industrial communities due to the pressing demand of the ecosystem of Internet‐of‐Things. All‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs), emerging as a sub‐type of organic photovoltaics, with the merits of great film‐forming property, remarkable morphological and light stability, hold great promise to simultaneously achieve high efficiency and long‐term operation in IPV's application. However, the dearth of polymer acceptors with medium‐bandgap has impeded the rapid development of indoor all‐PSCs. Herein, we report a highly efficient medium‐bandgap polymer acceptor (PYFO‐V) through the synergistic effects of side chain engineering and linkage modulation and apply it for indoor all‐PSCs operation. As a result, the PM6:PYFO‐V‐based indoor all‐PSC yielded a highest efficiency of 27.1% under LED light conditions, marking the highest value for reported binary indoor all‐PSCs to date. More importantly, the blade coated devices using non‐halogenated solvent (o‐xylene) maintained an efficiency over 23%, demonstrating the potential for industry‐scale fabrication. Our work not only highlights the importance of fine‐tuning intramolecular charge transfer effect and intrachain coplanarity in developing high‐performance medium‐bandgap polymer acceptors, but also provides a highly efficient strategy for indoor all‐PSC application. Abstract:Organic photovoltaic cells are appealing as indoor illumination harvesters to drive off-grid electronics in the Internet of things. However, a desirable output power usually requires expansive and dark active layers to absorb sufficient incident photons. The deployment of such large-scale dark objects is detrimental to the elaborately designed indoor lighting environment and affects human visual perceptions. Here, we propose a free-contact strategy to adjust the chromaticity of the transmitted indoor light by applying one-dimensional photonic crystals. Combining photonic crystals with various transmittances outside the photovoltaic cells, the spectral power distribution of the transmitted light can be precisely manipulated to realize a broad and consecutive color modulation covering the region from blue to orange. For certain photonic crystals, the chromaticity of propagated light can be recovered close to the light source. This work presents a solution to relieve light-disturbing in the application of organic photovoltaic cells under indoor illuminations.

As different from AM1.5G sunlight with broad spectra from the visible to near‐infrared region, the spectra of indoor light are usually located in the visible region. Herein, a wide‐bandgap double‐cable conjugated polymer is intentionally selected, which has the well‐matched absorption spectra with indoor light for use in indoor OSCs. This double‐cable polymer is used as a single photoactive layer in OSCs, providing a high power conversion efficiency of 19.44% under indoor light, which is comparable with the bulk‐heterojunction solar cells using near‐infrared electron acceptors. Moreover, the double‐cable polymer‐based indoor OSCs exhibit high storage stability. These results indicate that single‐component OSCs based on double‐cable polymers have promising applications in indoor OSCs. A wide‐bandgap double‐cable polymer JP02 has an identical absorption spectra with light‐emitting diode indoor light, exhibiting a high efficiency of 19.44% in single‐component organic solar cells (SCOSCs) that is similar to the bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) system.

Abstract:Organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices have garnered substantial interest due to their appealing ability to tailor the optical properties of organic active materials, rendering them highly promising for efficient energy conversion even under low lighting conditions. Nevertheless, the performance of OPV devices under low illumination intensities remains a challenge, often resulting in power conversion efficiencies that fall notably below theoretical predictions. In this study, we elucidate that the restricted performance of OPV devices under weak illumination intensities is linked to the presence of substantial voltage losses. Particularly, elevated nonradiative voltage losses, stemming from charge carrier recombination facilitated by traps, emerge as a primary factor. To address the pivotal concern of trap-assisted recombination losses, we propose a 2-fold strategy involving acceptor side chain modification and the utilization of a high-boiling-point solvent. By strategically modifying the molecular structure of the electron acceptor and optimizing the processing conditions of the active layer, the performance of OPV devices characterized by low illumination intensities witnesses a remarkable enhancement. This innovative approach not only mitigates the constraints imposed by trap-assisted recombination losses but also empowers the OPV devices to efficiently harness low lighting conditions.
