Abstract:Zeolite crystals were synthesized at a lower temperature (150°C) by adding a nucleation solution prepared at higher temperature (190°C) to the mother solution. The effects of the Na2O/SiO2 ratio, nucleation time of the nucleation solution, and the ratio of Na2O/SiO2 ratio in the mother solution on crystal transformation between ZSM-5 and mordenite were investigated. The transformation between zeolite ZSM-5 and mordenite could be controlled effectively by changing the overall Na2O/SiO2 ratio in the overall solution. A Na2O/SiO2 ratio of 0.18 formed a boundary between ZSM-5 and mordenite phases when the overall solution had a composition of xNa2O:100SiO2:2.5Al2O3:12SO42−:4000H2O. When the Na2O/SiO2 ratio was increased higher than 0.18 by altering the composition of the mother solution, the ZSM-5 product formed by nucleation at higher temperature (190°C) could be transformed into mordenite crystals during crystallization at lower temperature (150°C). When the Na2O/SiO2 ratio was ≤ 0.18, a product containing both ZSM-5 and mordenite crystals was obtained during nucleation at higher temperature that could be transformed into ZSM-5 crystals during crystallization at lower temperature. A precondition for crystal transformation between ZSM-5 and mordenite was that the crystallinity of the product formed during nucleation at higher temperature must be ≤ 30%.

Abstract:HYPOTHESIS: It is a Holy Grail to realize the goal-oriented synthesis of zeotype crystals via direct thermodynamic/kinetic control of crystallization in the simplest inorganic system. Especially, the most commonly used counter cations (i.e., Na+ and K+) are in turn believed to play merely the role of balancing charges and stabilizing frameworks, which make the simple ion-based morphology/porosity control remain big challenges.EXPERIMENTS: We re-examined the role of Na+ and K+ to fine-tune the classical/nonclassical crystallization process in a seed-induced system with the simplest composition (Si/Al sources, inorganic alkali, and H2O), and proposed an "ion switch" strategy. By analyzing the multiple growth curves, tracking the precursor evolution, and observing epitaxial crystallization behavior, a distinctive "ion switch"-worked nonclassical mechanism was uncovered.FINDINGS: By the "ion switch" strategy, ZSM-5 mesocrystals were fine-regulated with diverse architecture from single crystal to nanocrystallite assembly and intracrystal mesopore-enriched crystal. Such simple ions-controlled crystallization was achieved through microstructure heterogeneity of zeolitic building-blocks triggered by different counterions and their corresponding assembly behavior from oriented attachment to random deposition. Furthermore, this protocol can be extended to a wider H2O/SiO2 range, mixed Na+/K+ systems, and other alkali metal ions from Li+ to Cs+, and ZSM-5 mesocrystals with extended morphologies can be obtained.

Abstract:Preparation of aluminosilicate ferrierite (FER) zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness in the presence of a sole organic ammonium is attractive, but still challenging. In this report, with the employment of N,N-diethyl-cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidinium (DMP) as both a structure directing agent and crystal growth inhibitor, aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets, with a variety of crystal thicknesses, ranging from 6 to 200 nm, are successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Very interestingly, the amount of DMP in the starting gel is the key factor for crystal thickness control of aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets. The obtained FER products, with different thicknesses, are well characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N-2 sorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. This simple strategy might provide a novel avenue for the synthesis of other zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness.

Abstract:Diffusion limitation in micropores of zeolites leads to a demand for optimization of zeolite morphology and/or porosity. However, tailoring crystallization processes to realize targeted morphology/porosity is a major challenge in zeolite synthesis. On the basis of previous work on the salt-aided, seed-induced route, the template effect of seeds on the formation of micropores, mesopores and even macropores was further explored to selectively achieve desired hierarchical architectures. By carefully investigating the crystallization processes of two typical samples with distinct crystal morphologies, namely, 1) nanocrystallite-oriented self-assembled ZSM-5 zeolite and 2) enriched intracrystal mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite, a detailed mechanism is proposed to clarify the role of silicalite-1 seeds in the formation of diverse morphologies in a salt-rich heterogeneous system, combined with the transformation of seed-embedded aluminosilicate gel. On the basis of these conclusions, the morphologies/porosities of products were precisely tailored by deliberately adjusting the synthesis parameters (KF/Si, tetrapropylammonium bromide/Si and H2O/Si ratios and type of organic template) to regulate the kinetics of seed dissolution and seed-induced recrystallization. This work may not only provide a practical route to control zeolite crystallization for tailoring crystal morphology, but also expands the knowledge of crystal growth mechanisms in a heterogeneous system.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.

Abstract:The morphology and porosity of zeolite play a significant role in the activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions. It is a dream to optionally modulate zeolite morphology by regulating the crystallization process on the basis of comprehensively understanding the mechanisms. Herein, a series of MTW zeolite mesocrystals can be consciously fabricated with morphologies from a dense structure to a loose one of an oriented nanocrystallite aggregate by changing the H2O/SiO2 ratio. Their intertwined classical/nonclassical crystallization processes are investigated comprehensively. The results indicate that the crystallization of MTW zeolite takes place by a chain of events, including the formation of wormlike particles (WLPs), their aggregation, and crystallization of aggregates. MTW with a loose structure mainly crystallizes by an internal reorganization after a fast aggregation of WLPs in a concentrated system. On the other hand, the dense MTW is realized via the co-occurrence of a coalescence of the participating WLPs during its crystal growth with a slower rate in a dilute system. Moreover, the advantages of MTW with a loose structure are confirmed through cumene cracking and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene transformation. This method could pave the way for the synthesis of other zeolites with diverse morphologies and/or mesoporosities via subtle regulation of the crystallization pathway.

Abstract:Etching growth is widely employed for growing metal species, carving out some of the finest nanocrystals. However, such a general concept has so far evaded the growth of porous crystals. Herein, a novel nucleophilic etching growth mechanism that can be exploited to tune zeolite materials is uncovered. Most critical is the identification of mild etchant used in situ to successfully synthesize high-quality hierarchically porous ZSM-5 crystals. Time-series sample characterizations allow to visualize and track the complex zeolite crystallization pathway involving initial nucleation, intermediate dissolution, and subsequent nanoparticle attachment regrowth. Competition and cooperation between framework growth and in situ dissolution lead to facile control over size, morphology, crystallinity, composition, and mesoporosity by varying the amount of etchant or nucleophilicity. The judicious use of this mechanism results in dramatically improved catalytic activity in methanol to hydrocarbon reactions owing to the simultaneously increased crystallinity, secondary mesopores, and proper acid properties.
Interzeolite transformation through cross-nucleation: A molecular mechanism for seed-assisted synthesis

Abstract:Polymorph selection and efficient crystallization are cen-tral goals in zeolite synthesis. Crystalline seeds are used for both purposes. While it has been proposed that zeolite seeds induce interzeolite transformation by dissolving into structural units that promote nucleation of the daugh-ter crystal, the seed's structural elements do not always match those of the target zeolite. This discrepancy raises the question of how the seed promotes the daughter phase. Here, we present the first molecularly resolved investigation of seed-assisted zeolite synthesis. Using molecular simulations, we demonstrate that a parent zeo-lite can promote nucleation of a daughter zeolite even when they lack common composite building units (CBUs) or crystal planes. Modeling the seed-assisted synthesis of an AFI-type zeolite using zeolite CHA, our simulations indicate that stand-alone CBUs from the parent seed do not facilitate daughter crystal formation. However, in-troducing the intact seed significantly reduces synthesis time, supporting that seed integrity is key to increased efficiency. This reduction arises from cross-nucleation of the AFI-type zeolite on the CHA (001) face. We find that parent and daughter zeolites are connected by an inter-facial transition layer with order distinct from both zeo-lites. Simulations reveal that cross-nucleation occurs over a broad range of synthesis conditions. Based on nuclea-tion theory, we argue that if cross-nucleation occurs be-tween frameworks without common planes, as in our study, it could be even more favorable for zeolite pairs that share crystalline planes, such as those forming inter-growths.

Abstract:The preparation of zeolites has long been viewed as an empirical practice in which the impact of numerous synthesis parameters on complex pathways of crystallization remains unresolved. Efforts to achieve predictive control in zeolite crystal engineering are often motivated by the benefits of producing materials with nanosized dimensions for improved mass transport properties. In the past decade there has been substantial progress in the synthesis of zeolites and zeotypes with nanosized and hierarchical structures that have been shown to outperform conventional analogues in various applications. The ability to synthesize state-of-the-art nanoporous materials has socioeconomic advantages in processes that are critical to addressing twenty-first-century problems. Here we summarize synthetic methods used to prepare different classes of zeolitic materials and we highlight the diversity of nucleation and growth mechanisms, approaches to control these pathways through experimental design, and the advantages of infusing computational and big data analyses to transition zeolite synthesis away from trial-and-error methodologies.

Abstract:The rational modulation of zeolite microstructures tailoring crystal morphology and hierarchy, is an effective way to promote their mass transport and catalytic performance. However, practical realization remains chal-lenging. We recently demonstrated a novel etching-assisted crystallization process that allows fine control over zeolite architecture by eliminating intermediate defective nanocrystals with active proton-bearing organic molecules such as phenol. Here, we investigated in detail the phenolic etching effect on the crystallization of ZSM-5 zeolites using a combination of techniques including diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and 2D 27Al multiple quantum magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MQ MAS NMR) and systematically elucidated the structure modulation with a homologous series of phenolic com-pounds. Time-series characterizations confirmed the initial seed formation, intermediate dissolution, and final perfected crystallization stages during ZSM-5 synthesis in the presence of phenolic compounds. Since deproto-nation to phenolate anion in-situ is required during alkaline zeolite synthesis, the electron-withdrawing (EW) groups on the phenol para-position lead to bigger ZSM-5 crystals with more mesopores, while the phenolic molecules with para- electron-donating (ED) groups exhibit less significant effect. Under the same initial pH, the phenolic compounds show unparalleled compatibility with zeolite crystallization by stabilizing the system pH values, whereas inorganic acids invariably fail the zeolite crystallization. Given the remarkable kinetic control over zeolite growth through the simultaneous but opposite nucleophilic etching process, our observation pro-vides a versatile way to manipulate zeolite crystallization with high tunability.

Abstract:Direct synthesis by assembly of precursor nanoparticles is a promising strategy for preparing distinct mesoscopic-structured crystals, especially when high controllability is realized. However, uncertain properties of amorphous precursors and inner complicacy of crystallization mechanisms hamper controllable synthesis of zeolite mesocrystals. Here, we develop a salt-aided seed-induced organic-free method to facilely synthesize anisotropic MFI-type nanorod-bundle zeolite mesocrystals. An epitaxial, anisotropic assembly and crystallization of precursor particles on seed crystals is successfully achieved via a distinctively dynamic, nonclassical process, from relatively disordered to ordered attachment (OA), triggering an enhanced one-dimensional (1D) growth, thus constructing a unique core-shell-shell structure. This work sheds new light on the insights of both zeolite mesocrystal properties and a nonclassical crystallization mechanism. With an understanding of the mechanism, this nonclassical process can be exploited to systematically tune mesocrystal properties and create zeolite materials with novel or enhanced physical and chemical performance.

Abstract:Hierarchical Beta/MCM-41 composites have been synthesized by kinetically controlling the assembly process of nano-building blocks around hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. Composites with different microzeolitic–mesoporous properties were prepared from three typical beta zeolite precursors. Without disturbing the intrinsic acidity of the zeolites, the obtained composites exhibited improved catalytic performance in n-decane cracking.

Abstract:While seeding is a long-established strategy for the synthesis of zeolites with the desired phase in a faster crystallization rate and it is believed that the added seeds are at least partially dissolved in the synthetic gel for zeolite nucleation and growth, the solubility of seed crystals is seldom explored as a potential modulating factor for the tuning of zeolite properties. Herein, NH4F etching was used as a “chemical scissors” for the cutting of existing zeolites into nanosized crystals with enhanced solubility for the subsequent synthesis pursuing for zeolites with nanosized dimensions. Exemplified by the synthesis of mordenite, the tailor-made seeds reduced the size of the synthetic products by 1.9 times and further by 8.5 times compared with the synthesis seeded by the uncut sample and without seeding, respectively. Further, the general applicability of the size tailoring strategy is illustrated by the synthesis of ZSM-5 nanosheets using the top-down prepared nanoseeds. Considering the tunability and convenience of NH4F etching in the postsynthesis engineering of zeolite particle size, it is envisaged that the successful utilization of this chemical cutting strategy will be instrumental in many systems aiming for nanosized zeolite synthesis.

Abstract:The morphology and mesoporosity of zeolite are two vital properties to determine its performance in diverse applications involving adsorption and catalysis; while it remains a big challenge for the synthesis and regulation of zeolites with exceptional morphology/porosity only through inorganic-ions-based modification. Herein, by simply optimizing the alkali metal type (K+ or Na+), as well as alkali/water ratio and crystallization temperature, the zeolite ZSM-5 mesocrystals with diverse mesostructures are simply and controllably prepared via fine-tuning the crystallization mechanism in an organotemplate-free, ions-mediated seed-assisted system. Moreover, the impacts of these key parameters on the evolution of seed crystals, the development and assembly behavior of aluminosilicate species and the solution-phase process during zeolite crystallization are investigated by means of directional etching in NH4F or NaOH solutions. Except for the morphology/mesoporosity modulation, their physical and chemical properties, such as particle size, microporosity, Si/Al ratio and acidity, can be well maintained at a similar level. As such, the p/o-xylene adsorption and catalytic performance of o-xylene isomerization are used to exhaustively evaluate the synergistically enhanced catalytic activity and shape selectivity of the obtained products. This work demonstrates the possibility of effectively constructing novel zeolite mesostructures by simply altering parameters on simple ions-controlled crystallization and provides good models to inspect the impacts of mesoporosity or morphology on their catalytic performances.

Here, the tailored synthesis of ultrathin ZSM-5 nanosheets with controllable b-axis thickness and aspect ratio is achieved by adjusting the amount and aging time of silicalite-1 seed suspension in the fluoride medium for crystallization in a short time. On the basis of synthesis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and 19F MAS NMR analysis, the seed suspension overcomes the difficulty of nucleation in a near-neutral solution, and its [010] crystal facet facilitates the adsorption of fluoride, which promotes the b-axis-oriented growth of nanosheets. This work highlights the important role of seed suspension and fluoride in the growth process. The thinner nanosheets exhibit better catalytic performance (conversion, lifetime, and resistance to deactivation) in the cracking of n-heptane, which can be attributed to their larger surface area and shorter straight channel length.
