Abstract:This work is a review with proofs of a group of results on the stochastic Burgers equation with small viscosity, obtained during the last two decades. These results jointly show that the equation makes a surprisingly good model of hydrodynamical turbulence. The model provides natural and rigorously justified analogies of a number of key predictions of the theory of turbulence, including the main assertions of the Kolmogorov approach to turbulence, known as the K41 theory.

Abstract:We deal with a class of abstract nonlinear stochastic models, which covers many 2D hydrodynamical models including 2D Navier-Stokes equations, 2D MHD models and the 2D magnetic Bénard problem and also some shell models of turbulence. We state the existence and uniqueness theorem for the class considered. Our main result is a Wentzell-Freidlin type large deviation principle for small multiplicative noise which we prove by a weak convergence method.

Abstract:Stochastic geometric mechanics (SGM) is known for its potential utility in quantifying uncertainty in global climate modelling of the Earth's ocean and atmosphere while also preserving the fundamental advective transport properties of ideal fluid flow. The present chapter describes the mathematical development of the framework of stochastic geometric mechanics in the context of fluid flow and wave dynamics obtained from Lie group-invariant variational principles.

Abstract:Stochastic parametrisations of the interactions among disparate scales of motion in fluid convection are often used for estimating prediction uncertainty, which can arise due to inadequate model resolution, or incomplete observations, especially in dealing with atmosphere and ocean dynamics, where viscous and diffusive dissipation effects are negligible. This paper derives a family of three different types of stochastic parameterisations for the classical Euler-Boussinesq (EBC) equations for a buoyant incompressible fluid flowing under gravity in a vertical plane. These three stochastic models are inspired by earlier work on the effects of stochastic fluctuations on transport, see, e.g., Kraichnan (1968, 1994) and Doering et al.. (1994). They are derived here from variants of Hamilton's principle for the deterministic case when Stratonovich noise is introduced. The three models possess different variants of their corresponding Hamiltonian structures. One variant (SALT) introduces stochastic transport. Another variant (SFLT) introduces stochastic forcing , rather than stochastic transport . The third variant (LA SALT) introduces nonlocality in its stochastic transport, in the probabilistic sense of McKean (1966).

Abstract:This is an idiosyncratic survey of statistical fluid mechanics centering on the Hopf functional differential equation. Using the Burgers equation for illustration we review several functional integration approaches to theory of turbulence. We notice in particular that some important contributions have been brought about by researchers working on wave propagation in random media, among which Uriel Frisch is not an exception. We also discuss a particular finite-dimensional approximation for the Burgers equation.

Abstract:For a class of evolution equations that possibly have only local solutions, we introduce a stochastic component that ensures that the solutions of the corresponding stochastically perturbed equations are global. The class of partial differential equations amenable for this type of treatment includes the 3D Navier-Stokes equation, the rotating shallow water equation (viscous and inviscid), 3D Euler equation (in vorticity form), 2D Burgers' equation and many other fluid dynamics models.

Monte Carlo Methods and Applications

Abstract:Stochastic models and Monte Carlo algorithms for simulation of flow through porous media beyond the small hydraulic conductivity fluctuation assumptions are developed. The hydraulic conductivity is modelled as an isotropic random field with a lognormal distribution and prescribed correlation or spectral functions. It is sampled by a Monte Carlo method based on a randomized spectral representation. The Darcy and continuity equations with the random hydraulic conductivity are solved numerically, using the successive over relaxation method in order to extract statistical characteristics of the flow. Hybrid averaging is used: we combine spatial and ensemble avergaing to get efficient numerical procedure. We provide some conceptual and numerical comparison of various stochastic simulation techniques, and focus on the prediction of applicability of the randomized spectral models derived under the assumption of small hydraulic conductivity fluctuations.

Abstract:A framework which combines Green's function (GF) methods and techniques from the theory of stochastic processes is proposed for tackling nonlinear evolution problems. The framework, established by a series of easy-to-derive equivalences between Green's function and stochastic representative solutions of linear drift-diffusion problems, provides a flexible structure within which nonlinear evolution problems can be analyzed and physically probed. As a preliminary test bed, two canonical, nonlinear evolution problems - Burgers' equation and the nonlinear Schrodinger's equation - are first treated. In the first case, the framework provides a rigorous, probabilistic derivation of the well known Cole-Hopf ansatz. Likewise, in the second, the machinery allows systematic recovery of a known soliton solution. The framework is then applied to a fairly extensive exploration of physical features underlying evolution of randomly stretched and advected Burger's vortex sheets. Here, the governing vorticity equation corresponds to the Fokker-Planck equation of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, a correspondence that motivates an investigation of sub-sheet vorticity evolution and organization. Under the assumption that weak hydrodynamic fluctuations organize disordered, near-molecular-scale, sub-sheet vorticity, it is shown that these modes consist of two weakly damped counter-propagating cross-sheet acoustic modes, a diffusive cross-sheet shear mode, and a diffusive cross-sheet entropy mode. Once a consistent picture of in-sheet vorticity evolution is established, a number of analytical results, describing the motion and spread of single, multiple, and continuous sets of Burger's vortex sheets, evolving within deterministic and random strain rate fields, under both viscous and inviscid conditions, are obtained.

Abstract:This work investigates variational frameworks for modeling stochastic dynamics in incompressible fluids, focusing on large-scale fluid behavior alongside small-scale stochastic processes. The authors aim to develop a coupled system of equations that captures both scales, using a variational principle formulated with Lagrangians defined on the full flow, and incorporating stochastic transport constraints. The approach smooths the noise term along time, leading to stochastic dynamics as a regularization parameter approaches zero. Initially, fixed noise terms are considered, resulting in a generalized stochastic Euler equation, which becomes problematic as the regularization parameter diminishes. The study then examines connections with existing stochastic frameworks and proposes a new variational principle that couples noise dynamics with large-scale fluid motion. This comprehensive framework provides a stochastic representation of large-scale dynamics while accounting for fine-scale components. The evolution of the small-scale velocity component is governed by a linear Euler equation with random coefficients, influenced by large-scale transport, stretching, and pressure forcing.

A finite element method for stochastic diffusion equations using fluctuating hydrodynamics

Abstract:We present a finite element approach for diffusion problems with thermal fluctuations based on a fluctuating hydrodynamics model. The governing transport equations are stochastic partial differential equations with a fluctuating forcing term. We propose a discrete formulation of the stochastic forcing term that has the correct covariance matrix up to a standard discretization error. Furthermore, to obtain a numerical solution with spatial correlations that converge to those of the continuum equation, we derive a linear mapping to transform the finite element solution into an equivalent discrete solution that is free from the artificial correlations introduced by the spatial discretization. The method is validated by applying it to two diffusion problems: a second-order diffusion equation and a fourth-order diffusion equation. The theoretical (continuum) solution to the first case presents spatially decorrelated fluctuations, while the second case presents fluctuations correlated over a finite length. In both cases, the numerical solution presents a structure factor that approximates well the continuum one.

Abstract:Recent years have seen spectacular progress in the mathematical study of hydrodynamic equations. Novel tools from convex integration in particular prove extremely versatile in establishing non-uniqueness results. Motivated by this 'pathological' behavior of solutions in the deterministic setting, stochastic models of fluid dynamics have enjoyed growing interest from the mathematical community. Inspired by the theory of 'regularization by noise', it is hoped for that stochasticity might help avoid 'pathologies' such as non-uniqueness of weak solutions. Current research however shows that convex integration methods can prevail even in spite of random perturbations.

Abstract:This work is a review of a group of results on the stochastic Burgers equation with small viscosity, obtained during the last two decades. The model provides natural and rigorously justified analogies of a number of key predictions of the theory of turbulence, including the main assertions of the Kolmogorov approach to turbulence, known as the K41 theory. The presentation is based on the recent book by Boritchev and Kuksin, One-Dimensional Turbulence and the Stochastic Burgers Equation (AMS, 2021) and on two papers that develop the book’s results. Part of the assertions that we review here together with their rigorous proofs were earlier heuristically proved in works of physicists.

Abstract:A statistical theory is developed for the stochastic Burgers equation in the inviscid limit. Master equations for the probability density functions of velocity, velocity difference, and velocity gradient are derived. No closure assumptions are made. Instead, closure is achieved through a dimension reduction process; namely, the unclosed terms are expressed in terms of statistical quantities for the singular structures of the velocity field, here the shocks. Master equations for the environment of the shocks are further expressed in terms of the statistics of singular structures on the shocks, namely, the points of shock generation and collisions. The scaling laws of the structure functions are derived through the analysis of the master equations. Rigorous bounds on the decay of the tail probabilities for the velocity gradient are obtained using realizability constraints. We also establish that the probability density function Q(xi) of the velocity gradient decays as \xi \(-7/2) as xi --> -infinity. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:We explore the numerical approximation of the stochastic Burgers equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $ H\in(1/4, 1/2) $ and $ H\in(1/2, 1) $, respectively. The spatial and temporal regularity properties for the solution are obtained. The given problem is discretized in time with the implicit Euler scheme and in space with the standard finite element method. We obtain the strong convergence of semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes, performing the error estimates on a subset $ \Omega_{k, h} $ of the sample space $ \Omega $ with the Gronwall argument being used to overcome the difficulties, caused by the subtle interplay of the nonlinear convection term. Numerical examples confirm our theoretical findings.

Adaptive Uncertainty Quantification for Stochastic Hyperbolic Conservation Laws

Abstract:We propose a predictor-corrector adaptive method for the study of hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) under uncertainty. Constructed around the framework of stochastic finite volume (SFV) methods, our approach circumvents sampling schemes or simulation ensembles while also preserving fundamental properties, in particular hyperbolicity of the resulting systems and conservation of the discrete solutions. Furthermore, we augment the existing SFV theory with a priori convergence results for statistical quantities, in particular push-forward densities, which we demonstrate through numerical experiments. By linking refinement indicators to regions of the physical and stochastic spaces, we drive anisotropic refinements of the discretizations, introducing new degrees of freedom (DoFs) where deemed profitable. To illustrate our proposed method, we consider a series of numerical examples for non-linear hyperbolic PDEs based on Burgers' and Euler's equations.

Abstract:Recently, the theoretical framework of stochastic thermodynamics has been revealed to be useful for macroscopic systems. However, despite its conceptual and practical importance, the connection to hydrodynamics has yet to be explored. In this Letter, we reformulate the thermodynamics of compressible and incompressible Newtonian fluids so that it becomes comparable to stochastic thermodynamics and unveil their connections; we obtain the housekeeping--excess decomposition of entropy production rate (EPR) for hydrodynamic systems and find a lower bound on EPR given by relative fluctuation similar to the thermodynamic uncertainty relation. These results not only prove the universality of stochastic thermodynamics but also suggest the potential extensibility of the thermodynamic theory of hydrodynamic systems.

Abstract:We deal with a class of abstract nonlinear stochastic models with multiplicative noise, which covers many 2D hydrodynamical models including the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, 2D MHD models and 2D magnetic B\'enard problems as well as some shell models of turbulence. Our main result describes the support of the distribution of solutions. Both inclusions are proved by means of a general Wong-Zakai type result of convergence in probability for non linear stochastic PDEs driven by a Hilbert-valued Brownian motion and some adapted finite dimensional approximation of this process.
