Abstract:Part-time employment during high school has grown dramatically. High school students are twice as likely to be working part-time as they were in 1950. Despite the fact that many adolescents work between the ages of 12 and 17, little empirical evidence exists about the impact of part-time employment on academic performance. In the present research, the nationally representative sample of 10th graders, the First Follow-Up of the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS-88), was used to examine the effects of part-time work during the school year on academic achievement, as measured by the standardized achievement scores and high school grades earned in 4 subject areas: English, mathematics, science, and social studies. The findings of the study point to a small negative effect of employment on both measures of achievement when socioeconomic status, gender, and previous achievement were controlled. The study helps to illuminate an important question and has implications for parents, educators, and counselors.
Academic Performance and Part-Time Employment among High School Seniors

Abstract:Abstract This study estimates the effect of hours worked at a part time job on GPA among 12th grade respondents to the annual 19912004 Monitoring the Future surveys. I use two stage least squares (2SLS) with indicators for various levels of unearned income, which are strong predictors of hours worked, as instruments. Results show that GPA increases with additional work hours up to 15 per week and then declines. 2SLS estimates are substantially larger than those from ordinary least squares and robust to exclusion restrictions variations. Working has a small negative impact on educational time, but a much larger quadratic impact, which is negative up to 1520 hours per week, on time spent watching television and in social activities. Effects are stable across the sample period, larger for females, non-whites and metropolitan area residents, and linearly positive but substantially smaller for students with high future discount rates.

Abstract:Part-time work is becoming a common fact of life for high school students. Furthermore, its short and intermediate term impacts on the academic and psychosocial adaptation of students between the middle and end of high school are fairly unknown. To compensate for this lack of information, students in Grades 9 and 11 were consulted and asked to complete standardized questionnaires. Longitudinal results (Grades 9 and 11) reveal that the most favourable pathway for academic adaptation was associated to the students whose number of hours devoted to a part-time job while attending school decreased between the middle (Grade 9) and the end of high school (Grade 11). Moreover, the students who do not work as well as those who work a lot, experience costs and benefits on both academic and psychosocial levels. The conclusion discusses the importance of reinforcing every student's protective factors to better cope with the school—work tandem.

Abstract:Many students in full‐time secondary education in the UK hold part‐time jobs. Though this has benefits, there is concern that long hours of paid work conflict with students' studies. However, there is no recent nationally based UK evidence on the impact of paid work on examination results. This article fills the gap, with data on a large, nationally representative sample from the England and Wales Youth Cohort Study. It describes patterns of paid work amongst full‐time students in Years 12 and 13 and how these relate to time spent working for qualifications. It shows that, after controlling for a range of factors, paid work of a few hours per week has a negligible impact on A level grades, but that long working hours significantly reduce grades. The critical number of hours is lower in Year 13 than in Year 12. The impact of part‐time jobs on the probability of obtaining advanced vocational qualifications is much less clear.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between part time working, mental and physical health and academic performance. Fifty per cent of the undergraduate full time respondents had part time jobs. Mean pay per hour was £4.25 and mean number of hours worked was 14 hours. When the current state of students' health was compared to the sex‐ and age‐related norms for the general population, it showed that seven of the eight areas of health measured were significantly poorer than those of the general population. Results also showed that being in debt and part time working both have a very slight (though significant), detrimental effect on both mental and physical health of students. Accordingly, working more hours increased the probability that a student perceived a negative effect on academic performance. In conclusion, it is recommended that several measures be implemented to help students, to organize study and part time work to best effect.

Abstract:Purpose The aim of the paper is to examine the consequences of students engaging in part‐time employment during their studies. It reports the results of a survey of part‐time employment among university students. The research examined the possible consequences of combining part‐time employment with full‐time study, with particular reference to stress. Design/methodology/approach The research consisted of an institution‐wide Web‐based survey of full‐time undergraduates within a post‐1992 university in the UK. Findings The survey found that part‐time employment, in common with many previous studies, is a majority experience for full‐time undergraduates. It also found that some students were spending longer in their chosen employment than in time‐tabled classes. A central finding was that unlike much previous research, it emerged here that students reported more positive than negative outcomes. Practical implications The data shows that students continue to engage in part‐time employment at a significant level and for some studying is almost a secondary activity. This perhaps raises questions about the existing model of higher education delivery and the need for institutions to consider offering more support mechanisms for individual students. Originality/value The paper is of value in seeking to clarify the nature of the consequences for students seeking to combine employment and studying. Furthermore the paper builds on our understanding of the continuing growth of student part‐time employment.

Abstract:The employment histories of 716 school students in urban and rural Scotland were analysed. Questionnaire responses obtained while the students were in S3 and S4 revealed that a clear majority had had paid employment, with more students in the rural area working than in the urban. Different types of jobs are prevalent in the rural and urban areas. Rural students tend to work longer hours. Gender differences in types of employment also emerged. It is argued that these findings are significant for emerging debates regarding the possible accreditation of part-time employment in a student’s educational profile. The variations found in the work undertaken by these students suggest that regulations concerning such accreditation should not be based on mere common sense assumptions about the character of school students’ jobs.

Abstract:The direct, skill-enhancing effect of high school employment is difficult to identify because high school work effort is correlated with curricular choices, postsecondary schooling and work effort, and many other observed and unobserved factors. This study uses data for male, high school graduates to estimate a wage model in which detailed measures of high school coursework and post-school work experience are included among the extensive array of covariates. Instrumental variable methods are used to contend with the correlation between high school employment and unobserved characteristics. The direct effect of high school employment on subsequent wages proves to be small and relatively short-lived. Young men who work in high school gain additional, “indirect” wage benefits by taking vocational courses and gaining above-average work experience after graduation.

Abstract:Part-time jobs have been considered as one of the factors influencing student’ academic achievement. This paper examines the students of English Department, at the Faculty of Teaching and Teacher Training, Ar-Raniry State Islamic University (UIN), Banda Aceh, Indonesia, undertaking part-time job outside campus. Effects of employment on students’ academic achievement are investigated. A qualitative approach is utilized to analyze the impact of part-time job on students’ academic achievement. Thirty (30) students were purposively chosen as the samples of this study. Students’ academic result in the form GPA, the amount of time spent on part-time job, as well as types of jobs the students involve in are scrutinized to see the relation between part-time jobs and their academic result. The result of the study indicates that despite the time spent on part-time job, students’ GPA are above average. However, in some cases, the time required to finish their studies is longer than those who do not have part-time jobs.

Abstract:Nursing students are increasingly undertaking paid term-time employment to finance their living expenses and studies. However the type and duration of this part-time work is unknown; furthermore there is a limited evidence on the extent to which this part-time employment is impacting on academic performance and the student's experience of higher education. To address this shortfall this study undertook a cross-sectional survey of undergraduate nursing students to explore the incidence of student involvement in term-time employment and to develop an understanding of the relationship of employment on student's academic and clinical achievement, and on their experience of higher education. The results found that the vast majority of the sample were working in part-time employment during term-time. The average number of hours worked per week was sixteen. The number of hours worked per week was found to be a predictor of course performance, the student's experience of college and grades achieved. Students who worked greater hours reported negative outcomes in each of these three domains. The findings also support the contention that it is not working per se that has a detrimental effect on student outcomes but the numbers of hours' students are actually working while attending college. Therefore policy makers, educationalists and health service providers need to be aware of the burden that nursing students may have to contend with in combining work with their academic studies.

Academic Achievement and Its Impact on Friend Dynamics

Abstract:Academic achievement in adolescence is a key determinant of future educational and occupational success. Friends play an important role in the educational process. They provide support and resources and can both encourage and discourage academic achievement. As a result, the friends adolescents make may help to maintain and exacerbate inequality if friends are sorted on the basis of academic achievement. These observations prompt the question: How does academic achievement affect the friendship ties made? Using data from the high schools in the Add Health saturated sample, the author models network change using a stochastic actor-based Markov model for the co-evolution of networks and behavior. This model is carried out at the school level for each of the high schools included in the saturated sample. Results show that in the most typical American schools, similarity in academic achievement is an important and consistent predictor of friendship ties in a dynamic context. High-achieving students are more likely to extend ties to other high-achieving students, net of other sociodemographic, network, and proximity characteristics, while low-achieving students are more likely to extend ties to other low-achieving students. Adolescents respond to changes in academic achievement by changing their friendship ties.

Bayesian Causal Forests for Longitudinal Data: Assessing the Impact of Part-Time Work on Growth in High School Mathematics Achievement

Abstract:Modelling growth in student achievement is a significant challenge in the field of education. Understanding how interventions or experiences such as part-time work can influence this growth is also important. Traditional methods like difference-in-differences are effective for estimating causal effects from longitudinal data. Meanwhile, Bayesian non-parametric methods have recently become popular for estimating causal effects from single time point observational studies. However, there remains a scarcity of methods capable of combining the strengths of these two approaches to flexibly estimate heterogeneous causal effects from longitudinal data. Motivated by two waves of data from the High School Longitudinal Study, the NCES' most recent longitudinal study which tracks a representative sample of over 20,000 students in the US, our study introduces a longitudinal extension of Bayesian Causal Forests. This model allows for the flexible identification of both individual growth in mathematical ability and the effects of participation in part-time work. Simulation studies demonstrate the predictive performance and reliable uncertainty quantification of the proposed model. Results reveal the negative impact of part time work for most students, but hint at potential benefits for those students with an initially low sense of school belonging. Clear signs of a widening achievement gap between students with high and low academic achievement are also identified. Potential policy implications are discussed, along with promising areas for future research.

Abstract:University students, nationally as well as internationally, engage in employment to supplement income while studying. Social work students are no different in this respect. There have long been questions about whether such part-time work has an adverse impact on student academic performance. This paper explored the experiences of social work students enrolled on-campus across three Australian universities as reported through a survey and focus groups. The research found that social work students did engage in significant amounts of paid employment while studying, that there were both positives and negatives for students depending on the nature of their employment, and that compromises needed to be made in juggling competing responsibilities. Accessing and living on inadequate government benefits imposed particular stressors. The findings have implications for the ways in which social work education is structured, especially in terms of flexibility, and demonstrated that part-time work also offers opportunities for student learning.

Abstract:Background: Future health-care professionals face stress both during education and in later professional life. Next to educational trainings, many students are forced to assume part-time employment. Objective: Applying the Job Demands-Resources Model to the educational context, we investigate which role part-time employment plays next to health-care professional students’ education-specific demands and resources in the prediction of perceived stress. Method: In this cross-sectional study, data from N = 161 health-care students were analysed, testing moderation models. Results: Education-specific demands were associated with higher and education-specific resources with lower amounts of perceived stress. Part-time employment functioned as moderator, i.e. demands were less associated with stress experiences in students who were employed part-time. Conclusion: Identifying part-time employment as a resource rather than a demand illustrates the need to understand students’ individual influences on stress. Both educators and students will benefit from reflecting these resources to support students’ stress management.
The effects of doing part‐time jobs on college student academic performance and social life in a Chinese society

Abstract:Student employment has been treated as a homogeneous category in studying the effects of doing part‐time jobs on student academic performance or social life. In the present study, using data collected from a well‐known public university in Macau, we treat student employment as a heterogeneous experience and compare the relative importance of various characteristics of student employment in predicting student academic performance and social life. We find that doing part‐time jobs exerts no effect on student academic performance when it is treated as a homogeneous category. When treated as a heterogeneous experience, we find that incentives to work have most effects on student academic performance, followed by whether the jobs provide opportunities for students to develop skills and whether the jobs are related to their fields of study. Inconsistent with most previous studies, we find that doing part‐time jobs actually enriches students' school life and increases their social support network as well. We do find that taking part‐time jobs damages students' relationships with their parents.

Abstract:The effects of summer versus school-year employment on self-esteem, peer relationships, and family social climate were investigated in a sample of 135 adolescents. Students were assessed the summer before entrance into high school and during the second semester of high school, using a longitudinal design. Cross-sectional findings indicated that, during the summer, 52 workers possessed higher self-esteem than 79 nonworkers. Longitudinal analysis indicated that 10 girls who worked only during the school term reported increases in both stress and activity with peers. At our final assessment, the families of 49 students who did not work at either time had become more conflicted and less cohesive than families of all other students. The developmental implications of these results are discussed.

Adolescents' Perceptions of the Economy: Its Association with Academic Engagement and the Role of School-Based and Parental Relationships

Abstract:In the context of widespread media coverage of economic problems, un- and under-employment, and overwhelming student loan debt, youth are making sense of the prospects of getting a job and value of education. Further, they are assessing the implications of the job market in curtailing or enhancing their future success. School-based and familial relationships may support students in making sense of the job market. The current study focuses on how youth view the economy, its association with academic engagement, and how parental and school-based relationships shape views of the job market and their impact on academic engagement. With an ethnically diverse sample of high school students (N = 624; 54% female), perceptions of the job market were tested as mediators and moderators of the relations between school-based relationships and parenting on academic engagement. Using structural equation modeling, job market pessimism mediated the relation between school-based relationships and engagement. School-based relationships and parenting practices moderated the relation between job market pessimism and academic engagement. At high levels of parental and school support, interpreted as increased centrality and salience of academic success, there was a stronger negative association between job market pessimism and academic engagement. This set of findings indicates that high school students are thinking about the job market in ways that impact their engagement in school. These findings extend theories that have focused on the job market and the likelihood of dropping out of school or enrolling in post-secondary education. These findings are significant because just staying in school is not enough to succeed. With increased emphasis on college and career readiness, students are required to be more planful and purposeful during high school in order to succeed in the job market.

Abstract:Adolescents with low family socioeconomic status (SES) often have lower academic achievement than their peers with high family SES. However, less is known about the personal buffering mechanisms on the relationship between low family SES and academic achievement for youth. To address adolescents' academic achievement gap related to family SES, this study aimed to test whether family SES predicted adolescents' academic achievement and whether adolescents' subjective social mobility and attention moderated this relationship with longitudinal data. Valid participants included 827 adolescents (Mage = 12.30 years, range: 11–14 years, SD = 0.87, and 40.99% girls) from five township public schools in China. The results showed that family SES (comprising parents' education, parents' occupation, and family income) was positively correlated with adolescents' academic achievement (i.e., Chinese and math) when controlling for prior academic achievement. The positive associations between family SES and both Chinese and math achievement 9 months later were nonsignificant for adolescents with higher levels of subjective social mobility. In addition, the positive effect of family SES on Chinese achievement 9 months later was nonsignificant among adolescents with higher levels of attention. In conclusion, low family SES impairs adolescents' Chinese and math achievement, high levels of adolescents' subjective social mobility can buffer the adverse effects of low family SES on both Chinese and math achievement, and high levels of adolescents' attention can buffer the adverse effects of family SES on Chinese achievement but not on math achievement. These findings may emphasize the significance of developing differential interventions aimed at specific subject achievement for adolescents with low family SES.

Abstract:Balancing part-time work and studies has become commonplace for university students in Canada and other countries where the costs of education have risen over time. While there is a substantial literature on the impacts of term-time work on studies, little has been written about campus employment programs, which are becoming more commonplace in North American universities. This paper addresses this gap by considering students' experiences in such a program at a western Canadian university. Focusing primarily on qualitative data from a longitudinal study, we examine the various reasons for the attractiveness of this program, which go beyond the promise of professional, career-related work experience. Our analysis draws on the academic literature on work-study roles, which examines whether term-time work has a more positive or negative effect on student outcomes as well as sociocultural literature that is more attentive to different contextual features of the work-study relationship. We find that university-sponsored jobs are highly valued by students for their workplace relationships, regulation, and flexibility. Positive relationships at work are facilitated by supervisors' recognition of students' academic priorities and opportunities to develop peer-support networks on campus. Other important features for students include the convenience of working where one studies, and the ability to build work schedules around academic schedules. However, the limited access to 'good' campus jobs raises concerns about equity.
