Abstract:In this study, selective vacuum arc furnace is used to fabricate CoCrFeNi-M0.4 (M = Zr, Hf, 50 %Zr + 50 %Hf) EHEAs, and the content of Zr and Hf element is controlled to solve the balance of strength and plasticity in HEAs. Through alloying with Zr or Hf, the cross fluvial eutectic structure of CoCrFeNiZr0.4 and CoCrFeNiHf0.4 are consists of FCC-CoCrFeNi matrix phase and intermetallic. CoCrFeNiZr0.2Hf0.2 EHEAs, which is synergistic alloying with Zr and Hf, have a brawny river eutectic structure of both soft FCC and hard Ni7Hf2 intermetallic. The synergistic precipitation strengthening and solid solution strengthening result in the fracture strength and ductility of CoCrFeNiZr0.2Hf0.2 reaching 3475.7 MPa and 14.1 %, respectively. Furthermore, CoCrFeNiZr0.2Hf0.2 exhibit a good combination of strength and plasticity through synergistic alloying effect compared with other CoCrFeNi HEAs.
Solution Strengthening of Ductile Refractory HfMo X NbTaTiZr High-Entropy Alloys

Abstract:The crystal structure, microstructure, and mechanical properties of HfMoxNbTaTiZr (x≤1) alloys were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and compression testing. All the as-solidified HfMoxNbTaTiZr alloys possess a simple body-centered cubic structure. Lattice parameters of the HfMoxNbTaTiZr alloys decrease with an increase in Mo concentration, but the corresponding densities show an opposite trend. The yield strength of the HfMoxNbTaTiZr alloys increases from 1015MPa to 1512MPa as x increases from 0 to 1. The solid solution strengthening is linearly proportional to a Mo concentration suggesting that the strengthening effect from each Mo atom is additive. Except for the HfMoNbTaTiZr alloy, HfMoxNbTaTiZr (x<1) alloys exhibit excellent room-temperature plasticity (>50%). The material with x=0.75 is a new ductile refractory high-entropy alloy with promising mechanical properties.
Solid-solution strengthening of Ti-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta-Fe refractory high-entropy alloy

Abstract:Ti-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta system refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) exhibits outstanding tensile ductility in room temperature. However, the moderate yield strength of them is insufficient. In this work, the Fe element with small atomic radius was added into a non-equiatomic Ti-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ta RHEA for furtherly improving the yield strength. As a result, the yield strength of modified RHEA is as high as ~970 MPa, while retains a considerable fracture train of ~17.5%. However, the Hf 2 Fe brittle precipitates were formed at grain boundary after aging treatment, leading to a further increment of yield strength but severe deterioration of ductility.

Abstract:Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), which exhibit excellent mechanical properties at room temperature and high temperature, have received widespread attention. The TiZrHfNbTa alloy is one of the few refractory high-entropy alloys with tensile ductility. Alloying means is a common method to optimize the special properties of alloys. Here, a series of TiZrHfNbTaWx (x = 0–1) RHEAs were synthesized by arc melting technique. It showed that the fracture plasticity of the RHEAs changed from >50% of the TiZrHfNbTa to 20.7% of the TiZrHfNbTaW, and the yield strength increased from 1064 MPa of the TiZrHfNbTa to 1726 MPa of the TiZrHfNbTaW. In addition, The TiZrHfNbTaWx RHEAs predominantly consisted of a single random solid solution phase with body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure. The present result indicated that W addition could effectively enhance the strength of the TiZrHfNbTa alloy, while maintaining high plasticity. Finally, a simple solid solution strengthening theoretical model was proposed to explain the high yield strength, and the experimental values were in good agreement with the theoretical values.

Abstract:New refractory high-entropy alloys, CrHfNbTaTi and CrHfMoTaTi, derived from the well-known HfNbTaTiZr alloy through principal element substitution were prepared using vacuum arc melting. The phase components, microstructures, and compressive properties of the alloys in the as-cast state were investigated. Results showed that both alloys were composed of BCC and cubic Laves phases. In terms of mechanical properties, the yield strength increased remarkably from 926 MPa for HfNbTaTiZr to 1258 MPa for CrHfNbTaTi, whereas a promising plastic strain of around 15.0% was retained in CrHfNbTaTi. The morphology and composition of the network-shaped interdendritic regions were closely related to the improved mechanical properties due to elemental substitution. Dendrites were surrounded by an incompact interdendritic shell after Mo incorporation, which deteriorated yield strength and accelerated brittleness.

Abstract:Although refractory high-entropy alloys have exceptional strength at high temperatures, they are often brittle at room temperature. One exception is the HfNbTaTiZr alloy, which has a plasticity of over 50% at room temperature. However, the strength of HfNbTaTiZr at high temperature is insufficient. In this study, the composition of HfNbTaTiZr is modified with an aim to improve its strength at high temperature, while retaining reasonable toughness at room temperature. Two new alloys with simple BCC structure, HfMoTaTiZr and HfMoNbTaTiZr, were designed and synthesized. The results show that the yield strengths of the new alloys are apparently higher than that of HfNbTaTiZr. Moreover, a fracture strain of 12% is successfully retained in the HfMoNbTaTiZr alloy at room temperature.

Abstract:Developing high entropy alloys that possess both high strength and high ductility have achieved significant progress in recent years. In this study, the metastable high entropy alloy Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 with Al-Ti addition was formed by SLM technology. The effect of Al-Ti addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigates. The results shown that: with the addition of Al-Ti addition content, the grain size of the alloy decreases gradually. And also the TiAl intermetallic compounds and nanoscale L12 phase are precipitated in the matrix. The phase transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) effect and twin-induced plasticity (TWIP) effect can be activated during the plastic deformation of the alloy. Strength and ductility have been well balanced because of the combination of multiple mechanisms. In the alloy with addition of 1at. % Al and 1 at. % Ti, the yield strength, tensile strength and elongation are 543.5 MPa, 854.2 MPa and 31.8 % respectively, which are increased by 110.2 %, 35.5 % and 70.1 % compared with Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 alloy without Al-Ti addition.

Abstract:The combined effects of vanadium additions and in-situ TiC particle formation upon the microstructure and mechanical properties of FeCrNiCu high entropy alloys were investigated. The addition of V changed the FeCrNiCu matrix structure from FCC (i.e., face-centered cubic) to FCC+BCC (i.e., body-centered cubic). The as-cast 10 vol.%TiC/FeCrNiCuV0.1 high entropy alloy matrix composite showed excellent mechanical properties, with the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength determined to be 653.5 MPa and 1006.5 MPa, respectively. The extra strength generated by V addition and in-situ TiC particles in FeCrNiCu was evaluated, and the theoretical predictions match the experimental results well.

Abstract:AlCrFeNiTi0.5Mox (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by arc melting and investigated in terms of microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance. All the as-cast HEAs are composed of one disordered BCC phase (BCC) and one ordered BCC (B2) phase. The added Mo acted as a solid solute in the BCC phase. When Mo molar ratio was more than 0.3, a new type or modified BCC phase formed at the grain boundary, which was enriched with both Mo and Ti. Strength, hardness, and ductility of AlCrFeNiTi0.5 were markedly increased with the Mo addition. The increase in hardness was caused by Mo-solute strengthened disordered BCC phase and precipitation-strengthening by precipitation of hard (Mo, Ti)-rich BCC phase at grain boundaries. The improved ductility was largely attributed to reduced interfacial lattice mismatch between the BCC and B2 phase. The Mo-free AlCrFeNiTi0.5 showed the highest wear loss, about 2.5 times as large as that of AlCrFeNiTi0.5Mo0.4 alloy, which possessed the highest hardness, yield strength, maximum strength, and ductility.

Abstract:A non-equiatomic Ni3.5Co3Cr1.5 medium-entropy alloy (AT0) with a single-phase face-centered cubic structure (FCC) directly obtained by arc-melting shows the low yield strength of 147 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 447 MPa and large total elongation to fracture of 78.8%. By doping Al and Ti, the as-cast (Ni3.5Co3Cr1.5)90Al5Ti5 high-entropy alloy (AT5) exhibits enhanced strength-ductility synergy. Compared to AT0 alloy, the yield strength of AT5 alloy increases more than fivefold to 792 MPa, ultimate tensile strength doubles to 1004 MPa, and still remaining a high elongation of 38.2%. The apparent increase in strength can be attributed to uniformly distributed, high-content, conherent (Ni,Co)3(Al,Ti)-type nanoprecipitates formed in FCC matrix. The formation of various dislocation substructures and crossed stacking faults (SFs) with Lomer-Cottrell locks during tensile deformation is responsible for strain hardening of AT5 alloy.

Abstract:Cr was used to replace Nb, Ti, and Zr in a precursor alloy HfMoNbTiZr, and its effect on the microstructure, phase constitution, and mechanical properties of the newly formed alloys were investigated. Microstructural evolutions revealed that a cubic Laves phase emerged regardless of which element was substituted by Cr. The original single-phase BCC structure of the precursor alloy was thus deteriorated and replaced by two BCC and one cubic Laves phases. The formation of the Laves phase and BCC phases increased the strength to 2480 ± 40 MPa in the HfMoNbTiCr alloy, while the net-like structure (Laves phase) impeded the crack extension and compensated for the decreased plasticity due to the introduction of the brittle-stiff Laves phase. The other two alloys, HfMoTiZrCr and HfMoNbZrCr, possessed lower strengths of 1400 ± 20 and 1642 ± 23 MPa and exhibited a completely brittle fracture character, which was attributed to the high volume fraction and the morphologies of the Laves phase.Graphic abstract

Abstract:This study developed a series of refractory AlxHfNbTaTiZr high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with an aim to improve strength, and reduce density of the very ductile base alloy HfNbTaTiZr. Despite the diversity of crystal structures among the constituent elements, all the HEAs are single solid solution phase with body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. The addition of Al significantly improves the strength but reduces the ductility due to large solution hardening. The linear relation between yield strength and atomic percentage of Al suggests that the strengthening effect of a certain element in a single-phase HEA alloy can be explained based on quasi-binary alloy concept. Crack formations in deformed AlHfNbTaTiZr alloy with the lowest fracture strain are mainly along the boundaries between dendrite and interdendrite. This agrees with its large deviation of Al content and thus strength between dendrite and interdendrite. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Here, the composition of TaMoNbZrTiAl refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) is optimized by increasing Ti content to improve its mechanical property especially the ductility, through comparing two RHEAs with different Ti content. The RHEAs contain two body-centered-cubic (BCC) phases. The BCC phase in the dendritic region is rich in Ta, Mo and Nb, and the BCC phase in the interdendritic region is enriched in Zr, Ti and Al. The as-cast RHEA with a higher Ti content remains dendritic microstructures, and Ti is mainly enriched in the interdendritic region. After annealing treatment at 1300 °C for 48 h, the dendritic microstructures change into equiaxed-grain morphology, accompanied by needle-like micron precipitates at grain boundaries in the RHEA with higher Ti content. For the as-cast RHEAs, the fracture strain increases by ~ 6.6% and the uniform plastic strain increases by ~ 5.9% at the compression test due to the increase of Ti content. Our work offers a reference for the composition design of RHEAs and makes a preliminary exploration of the optimization of the microstructures and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Introducing Laves phase into refractory high entropy alloys is a new exploration direction to improve the alloy strength. The as-cast and annealed states ZrNbTaHf0.2Crx (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) alloys were prepared, and the microstructure, phase constituents, and mechanical properties of the refractory high-entropy alloy were studied in the present work. The addition of Cr elements affects the alloy properties mainly through the formation of the high-entropy Laves phase. The ZrNbTaHf0.2Crx alloys have a typical dendritic structure, consisting of BCC solid solution phase, HCP solid solution phase and C15 Laves phase. With the increasing Cr content, the fraction of Laves phase increases significantly. The heat treatment results in more fraction of the C15 Laves phase and BCC phases. After annealing, the growth of BCC phase has no obviously preferred orientation. The hardness and strength significantly increase with Laves phase with a compromise in ductility. The solid solution strengthening caused by significant lattice distortion and laves phase precipitation increase the strength and hardness of the alloys.

Abstract:With Ti addition in a NbMoTaW alloy, a new refractory high entropy alloy (HEA) of TiNbMoTaW was developed. It has been found that this HEA possesses single body-centered cubic (BCC) phase structure, and could sustain the phase structure even after annealing at 1200 degrees C for 24 h. In comparison with the mechanical properties of the NbMoTaW and VNbMoTaW HEAs, the room-temperature yield strengths and compressive plastic strains of the TiNbMoTaWand TiVNbMoTaWHEAs are significantly enhanced. In particular, the TiNbMoTaW and TiVNbMoTaW HEAs also show very promising high temperature strength. Their yield strengths are as high as similar to 586 and similar to 659 MPa at 1200 degrees C, respectively. The present results indicate that Ti addition is beneficial to the strength and the compressive ductility of the refractory HEAs at room-temperature. It is suggested that the present refractory HEAs possess the potentials in applications of high temperature structure materials. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Enhancing the strength-ductility trade-off in C 0.1 CrMnFeCoNi 0.8 high-entropy alloy: A combined experimental and DFT study

Abstract:As a rapidly emerging class of metallic materials, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) provide the opportunity to develop novel alloys with superior mechanical properties through tackling the long-standing challenges, such as strength-ductility trade-off dilemma. Herein, C-doped CrMnFeCoNi 0.8 alloys were produced by vacuum induction melting. The addition of C up to 0.1 at % strengthens the CrMnFeCoNi 0.8 alloy without sacrificing ductility. Compared to the base alloy, the yield strength of the C 0.1 CrMnFeCoNi 0.8 alloy was increased by ∼40 % from 240.9 MPa to 334.2 MPa at no reduction in tensile ductility, mainly attributed to the formation of fully coherent carbide precipitates on the grain boundaries. The mechanical properties of the C 0.1 CrMnFeCoNi 0.8 alloy can be further enhanced by annealing. The alloy annealed at 950 °C exhibits a yield strength of 517.8 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 914.6 MPa, and an appreciable ductility (20.5 %), achieving an excellent combination of strength and ductility. Furthermore, the influence of C addition on the mechanical properties and electronic structures were explored using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the enhanced strength-ductility synergy in the C 0.1 CrMnFeCoNi 0.8 alloy.

Abstract:A new refractory alloy HfNbSi0.5TiVZr was synthesized by induction levitation melting with the aim to achieve an excellent strength and toughness balance of the Hf-Nb-Ti-Zr based alloy. The as-cast alloy with density of ρ=7.75g/cm3 and microhardness of Hv=464 had the microstructure consisting of bcc solid solution with little vanadium rich phase and fine intermetallic phase presented dendritic structure. Mixing entropy and formation enthalpy can explain this behavior. After heat treatment at 1373K for 4 h, no new phase come into being but elements solute more fully. Compressive yield strength of the alloy gradually decreased from 1540MPa at room temperature to 371MPa at 1073K in as-cast state and decreased from 1483MPa at room temperature to 102MPa at 1073K after annealed. Comparing with the similar high entropy alloys, the structure combining silicide and continuous solid phase have a great benefit to the balance of strength and ductility.

Abstract:Improvement on strength and ductility synergy has always been the unremitting pursuit for structural materials. In this study, the strengthen and ductility of CoCrFeMnNi HEA were improved simultaneously via a designed continuous driven friction process. The results show that a hierarchical structure, which consists of 3 zones: the homogenously distributed ultrafine grains in fusion zone, severely distorted grains in thermal mechanical effect zone and coarsening equiaxed grains with high dislocation density in base zone, was formed in CoCrFeMnNi HEA, leads to the tensile strength enhanced from 598 to 629 MPa with the ductility increased from 27% to 38%. The findings provide new insight into solution to strength and ductility trade-off for structural materials.

Abstract:Effects of Ti addition on the microstructures and mechanical properties of AlCrFeNiMo 0.5 Ti x （X = 0, 0.25, 0.4,0.5, 0.6, 0.75） high entropy alloys（HEAs） are investigated. All these HEAs of various Ti contents possess dual BCC structures, indicating that Ti addition does not induce the formation of any new phase in these alloys. As Ti addition X varies from 0 to 0.75, the Vickers hardness（HV） of the alloy system increases from 623.7 HV to766.2 HV, whereas the compressive yield stress firstly increases and then decreases with increasing X above 0.5.Meanwhile, the compressive ductility of the alloy system decreases with Ti addition. The AlCrFeNiMo 0.5 Ti 0.6 and AlCrFeNiMo 0.5 Ti 0.75 HEAs become brittle and fracture with very limited plasticity. In the AlCrFeNiMo 0.5 Ti x HEAs, the AlCrFeNiMo 0.5 HEA possesses the highest compressive fracture strength of 4027 MPa and the largest compressive plastic strain of 27.9%, while the AlCrFeNiMo 0.5 Ti 0.5 HEA has the highest compressive yield strength of 2229 MPa and a compressive plastic strain of 10.1%. The combination of high strength and large plasticity of the AlCrFeNiMo 0.5 Ti x （X = 0, 0.25, 0.4, 0.5） HEAs demonstrates that this alloy system is very promising for engineering applications.

Abstract:A metastable beta-type medium-entropy refractory alloy, Hf20Nb10Ti35Zr35, was designed to have a ductile BCC structure in the as-solution-treated state. The alloy was aged to achieve the combinations of strength and ductility. The strengthening mechanisms included transformation-induced plasticity, twinning-induced plasticity and precipitation strengthening. These multiple strengthening mechanisms can serve as a basis for alloy design and the improvement of the mechanical properties of alloys. (C) 2021 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
