Abstract:We prove the Massey Vanishing Conjecture for $n=4$ and $p=2$. That is, we show that for all fields $F$, if a fourfold Massey product modulo $2$ is defined over $F$, then it vanishes over $F$.

Abstract:Let $n\geq 3$. We show that for every number field $K$ with $\zeta_p \notin K$, the absolute and tame Galois groups of $K$ satisfy the strong $n$-fold Massey property relative to $p$. Our work is based on an adapted version of the proof of the Theorem of Scholz-Reichardt.

Abstract:We prove that a strengthened version of Minac-Tan's Massey Vanishing Conjecture holds true for fields with a finite number of square classes whose maximal pro-$2$ Galois group is of elementary type (as defined by I. Efrat). In particular, this proves Minac-Tan's Massey Vanishing Conjecture for Pythagorean fields with a finite number of square classes and their finite extensions.

Abstract:In this article, we present streamlined proofs of results of Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla concerning the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ for primes $p\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$ while providing a generalization of their conjecture. Using our generalization, we relate Fermat quotients of quadratic non-residues $\bmod{p}$ to sums of harmonic numbers.

Abstract:We prove some new instances of a conjecture of Bachoc, Couvreur and Zémor that generalizes Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem to a multiplicative version in a function field setting. As a consequence we find that if $F$ is a rational function field over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $S \subset F$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space such that $\dim S^2 = 2\dim S + 1$, then the conjecture holds.

Abstract:We show that global vanishing of Massey products on a commutative differential graded algebra is not invariant under field extension. Non-vanishing triple Massey products remain non-vanishing upon field extension, while higher Massey products can generally vanish. If the field being extended is algebraically closed, all non-vanishing Massey products remain non-vanishing on a finite type commutative differential graded algebra.

Abstract:For every finite group $H$ and every finite $H$-module $A$, we determine the subgroup of negligible classes in $H^2(H,A)$, in the sense of Serre, over fields with enough roots of unity. As a consequence, we show that for every odd prime $p$, every integer $n\geq 3$, and every field $F$ containing a primitive $p$-th root of unity, there exists a continuous $n$-dimensional mod $p$ representation of the absolute Galois group of $F(x_1,\dots,x_p)$ which does not lift modulo $p^2$. This answers a question of Khare and Serre, and disproves a conjecture of Florence.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number with $p\equiv 1\mod 4$, let $\varepsilon>1$ be the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1+\sqrt{p}}{2}]$ and let $x$ and $y$ be the unique nonnegative integers with $\varepsilon=x+y\frac{1+\sqrt{p}}{2}$. The Ankeny-Artin-Chowla-Conjecture states that $p$ is not a divisor of $y$. In this note, we provide and discuss a counterexample to this conjecture.

Tamagawa number conjecture for CM modular forms and Rankin--Selberg convolutions

Abstract:Let $E/F$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the torsion points of $E$ generate over $F$ an abelian extension of $K$. In this paper we prove the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E/F$ in analytic rank $1$ for primes $p>3$ split in $K$. This was previously known for $F=\mathbb{Q}$ by work of Rubin as a consequence of his proof of the Mazur--Swinnerton-Dyer ``main conjecture'' for rational CM elliptic curves, but the problem remained wide open for general $F$. The approach in this paper, based on a novel application of an idea of Bertolini--Darmon--Prasanna to consider a carefully chosen decomposable Rankin--Selberg convolution of two CM modular forms having the Hecke $L$-function of interest as one of the factors, circumvents the use of $p$-adic heights and Bertrand's $p$-adic transcendence results in previous approaches. It also yields a proof of similar results for CM abelian varieties $A/K$, and for CM modular forms of higher weight.

Vanishing properties of Kloosterman sums and Dyson's conjectures

Abstract:In a previous paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2406.06294" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.06294">arXiv:2406.06294</a> [math.NT], the author proved the exact formulae for ranks of partitions modulo each prime $p\geq 5$. In this paper, for $p=5$ and $7$, we prove special vanishing properties of the Kloosterman sums appearing in the exact formulae. These vanishing properties imply a new proof of Dyson's rank conjectures. Specifically, we give a new proof of Ramanujan's congruences $p(5n+4)\equiv 0\pmod 5$ and $p(7n+5)\equiv 0\pmod 7$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. In 2008 E. Mortenson proved van Hamme's following conjecture: $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}(4k+1)\binom{-1/2}k^3\equiv (-1)^{(p-1)/2}p\pmod{p^3}.$$ In this paper we show further that \begin{align*}\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(4k+1)\binom{-1/2}k^3\equiv &\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}(4k+1)\binom{-1/2}k^3 \\\equiv & (-1)^{(p-1)/2}p+p^3E_{p-3} \pmod{p^4},\end{align*}where $E_0,E_1,E_2,\ldots$ are Euler numbers. We also prove that if $p>3$ then $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{20k+3}{(-2^{10})^k}\binom{4k}{k,k,k,k}\equiv(-1)^{(p-1)/2}p(2^{p-1}+2-(2^{p-1}-1)^2)\pmod{p^4}.$$

Abstract:In 1956, Je$\acute{s}$manowicz conjectured that, for positive integers $m$ and $n$ with $m>n, \, \gcd(m,\, n)=1$ and $m\not\equiv n\pmod{2}$, the exponential Diophantine equation $(m^2-n^2)^x+(2mn)^y=(m^2+n^2)^z$ has only the positive integer solution $(x,\,y,\, z)=(2,\,2,\,2)$. Recently, Ma and Chen \cite{MC17} proved the conjecture if $4\not|mn$ and $y\ge2$. In this paper, we present an elementary proof of the result of Ma and Chen \cite{MC17}.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a positive integer and $S_{2k}={\tt x}+{\tt x}^4+...+{\tt x}^{4^{2k-1}}\in\Bbb F_2[{\tt x}]$. It was recently conjectured that ${\tt x}+S_{2k}^{4^{2k}}+S_{2k}^{4^k+3}$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{4^{3k}}$. In this note, the conjecture is confirmed and a generalization is obtained.

Abstract:In 2014, as part of a larger study of overpartitions with restrictions of the overlined parts based on residue classes, Munagi and Sellers defined $d_2(n)$ as the number of overpartitions of weight $n$ wherein only even parts can be overlined. As part of that work, they used a generating function approach to prove a parity characterization for $d_2(n)$. In this note, we give a combinatorial proof of their result and extend it to a modulus 4 characterization; we provide both generating function and combinatorial proofs of this stronger result. The combinatorial arguments incorporate classical involutions of Franklin, Glaisher, and Sylvester, along with a recent involution of van Leeuwen and methods new with this work.

Abstract:We show that every Fricke invariant meromorphic modular form for $\Gamma_0(N)$ whose divisor on $X_0(N)$ is defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and supported on Heegner divisors and the cusps is a generalized Borcherds product associated to a harmonic Maass form of weight $1/2$. Further, we derive a criterion for the finiteness of the multiplier systems of generalized Borcherds products in terms of the vanishing of the central derivatives of $L$-function of certain weight $2$ newforms. We also prove similar results for twisted Borcherds products.

Abstract:We prove some polynomial identities from which we deduce congruences modulo $p^2$ for the Fermat quotient $\frac{2^p-2}{p}$ for any odd prime $p$ (Proposition 1 and Theorem 1). These congruences are simpler than the one obtained by Jothilingam in 1985 which involves listing quadratic residues in some order. On the way, we also observe some more congruences for the Fermat quotient that generalize Eisenstein's classical congruence. Using such polynomial identities, we obtain some sums involving harmonic numbers. We also prove formulae for binomial sums of harmonic numbers of higher order.

Abstract:We provide proofs of two theorems stated by Massey in 1961, concerning the obstructions to finding complex structures on real vector bundles. In addition, we determine the second obstruction to a complex structure on a rank six orientable real vector bundle. The obstructions are fractional parts of integral Stiefel-Whitney classes, and a fourth of an appropriate combination of Pontryagin, Chern, and Euler classes.
