Abstract:Let $n\geq 3$. We show that for every number field $K$ with $\zeta_p \notin K$, the absolute and tame Galois groups of $K$ satisfy the strong $n$-fold Massey property relative to $p$. Our work is based on an adapted version of the proof of the Theorem of Scholz-Reichardt.

Abstract:We prove that a strengthened version of Minac-Tan's Massey Vanishing Conjecture holds true for fields with a finite number of square classes whose maximal pro-$2$ Galois group is of elementary type (as defined by I. Efrat). In particular, this proves Minac-Tan's Massey Vanishing Conjecture for Pythagorean fields with a finite number of square classes and their finite extensions.

Abstract:Assuming specific instances of two general conjectures in arithmetic algebraic geometry (bijectivity of $p$-adic regulator maps, injectivity of $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi maps), we prove several cases of the $p$-part of the Tamagawa number conjecture ($p$-TNC) of Bloch-Kato and Fontaine-Perrin-Riou for (homological) motives of modular forms of even weight $\geq4$ in analytic rank $1$. More precisely, we prove our results for a large class of newforms $f$ and prime numbers $p$ that are ordinary for $f$ and such that the weight of $f$ is congruent to $2$ modulo $2(p-1)$. Inspired by work of W. Zhang in weight $2$, the key ingredient in our strategy is an analogue for $p$-adic Galois representations attached to higher (even) weight newforms of Kolyvagin's conjecture on the $p$-indivisibility of derived Heegner points on elliptic curves, which we prove via a $p$-adic variation method exploiting the arithmetic of Hida families. Along the way, we also prove (under similar assumptions) the $p$-TNC for modular motives in analytic rank $0$ and the rationality conjecture of Beilinson and Deligne on the existence of zeta elements on the fundamental line in analytic ranks $0$ and $1$. Prior to this work, the only known results on (questions related to) the $p$-TNC for modular motives were in weight $2$ and analytic rank $\leq1$ and in even weight and analytic rank $0$. As further applications of our result on Kolyvagin's conjecture in higher weight, we deduce a structure theorem for Selmer groups, $p$-parity results, converse theorems and higher rank results for modular forms and modular motives.
Upper bounds for the number of number fields with prescribed Galois group

Abstract:Let $n$ be a positive integer and $G$ be a transitive permutation subgroup of $S_n$. Given a number field $K$ with $[K:\mathbb{Q}]=n$, we let $\widetilde{K}$ be its Galois closure over $\mathbb{Q}$ and refer to $Gal(\widetilde{K}/\mathbb{Q})$ as its Galois group. We may identify this Galois group with a transitive subgroup of $S_n$. Given a real number $X>0$, we set $N_{n}(X;G)$ to be the number of such number fields $K$ for which the absolute discriminant is bounded above by $X$, and for which $Gal(\widetilde{K}/\mathbb{Q})$ is isomorphic to $G$ as a permutation subgroup of $S_n$. We prove an asymptotic upper bound for $N_n(X;G)$ as $X\rightarrow\infty$. This result is conditional and based upon the non-vanishing of certain polynomial determinants in $n$-variables. We expect that these determinants are non-vanishing for many groups, and demonstrate through some examples how they may be computed.

Note on a differential algebra bound

Abstract:In a recent article, Freitag, Moosa and the author showed that in differentially closed fields of characteristic zero, if two types are nonorthogonal, then their n+3 and m+3 Morley powers are not weakly orthogonal, where n and m are their respective Lascar ranks. In this short note, we prove that the bound is tight: there are such types with weakly orthogonal n+2 and m+2 Morley powers. The types in question were constructed by Freitag and Moosa as examples of types with degree of nonminimality 2. As interesting as our result are our methods: we rely mostly on Galois theory and some descent argument for types, combined with the failure of the inverse Galois problem over constant parameters.

Abstract:Let $k = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt {-m})$ and $p > 2$ split in $k$. We prove new properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions $K/k$, distinct from the cyclotomic; we do not assume $K/k$ totally ramified, nor the triviality of the $p$-class group of $k$. These properties are governed by the $p$-valuation, $\delta_p(k)$, of a suitable Fermat quotient of the fundamental $p$-unit $x$ of $k$, which also yields the order of the logarithmic class group (2.2, App. A), and generalize the Gold-Sands criterion (5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5). These results use the second element $(\mathcal{H}_{K_n}/\mathcal{H}_{K_n}^{G_n})^{G_n}$ of the filtration of the $p$-class groups in $K=\cup_n K_n$, without any argument of Iwasawa's theory, and provide new perspectives. We compute, Sec. 7, the first layer $K_1$, using the Log-function, then give a short proof of a result of Kundu-Washington (5.6), and show (7.4, 7.6) that capitulation is possible in $K$, suggesting Conjecture 5.8. Calculations are gathered App. B.

An unconditional proof of the abelian equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture and applications

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We give an unconditional proof of the equivariant Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real fields for every admissible one-dimensional $p$-adic Lie extension whose Galois group has an abelian Sylow $p$-subgroup. Crucially, this result does not depend on the vanishing of any $\mu$-invariant. As applications, we deduce the Coates-Sinnott conjecture away from its $2$-primary part and new cases of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Tate motives.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a function field of one variable over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$. Weil's celebrated theorem states that the congruent zeta function of $K/\mathbb{F}$ is determined by the $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}/\mathbb{F})$-module structure of $X_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}K}(p)\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}_p}\mathbb{Q}_p$, and vise versa, where $p$ is a prime number different from the characteristic of $K$ and $X_{\overline{\mathbb{F}}K}(p)$ stands for the Galois group of the maximal unramified abelian $p$-extension over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}K$. In the present paper, I will give a number field analogue of the above mentioned theorem by considering the total cyclotomic extension, which we may regard as a number field analogue of $\overline{\mathbb{F}}K/K$.

Abstract:For an elliptic curve with complex multiplication over a number field, the p∞ ‐Selmer rank is even for all p . Česnavičius proved this using the fact that E admits a p ‐isogeny whenever p splits in the complex multiplication field, and invoking known cases of the p ‐parity conjecture. We give a direct proof, and generalise the result to abelian varieties.

Abstract:The Main Theorem for abelian fields (often called Main Conjecture despite proofs in most cases) has a long history which has found a solution by means of "elementary arithmetic", as detailed in Washington's book from Thaine's method having led to Kolyvagin's Euler systems. Analytic theory of real abelian fields $K$ says (in the semi-simple case) that the order of the $p$-class group $\mathcal{H}_K$ is equal to the $p$-index of cyclotomic units $(\mathcal{E}_K : \mathcal{F}_K)$. We have conjectured (1977) the relations $\# \mathcal{H}_\varphi = (\mathcal{E}_\varphi : \mathcal{F}_\varphi)$ for the isotypic $p$-adic components using the irreducible $p$-adic characters $\varphi$ of $K$. We develop, in this article, new promising links between: (i) the Chevalley-Herbrand formula giving the number of ``ambiguous classes'' in $p$-extensions $L/K$, $L \subset K(\mu_\ell^{})$ for the auxiliary prime numbers $\ell \equiv 1 \pmod {2p^N}$ inert in $K$; (ii) the phenomenon of capitulation of $\mathcal{H}_K$ in $L$; (iii) the real Main Conjecture $\# \mathcal{H}_\varphi = (\mathcal{E}_\varphi : \mathcal{F}_\varphi)$ for all~$\varphi$. We prove that the real Main Conjecture is trivially fulfilled as soon as $\mathcal{H}_K$ capitulates in $L$ (Theorem \ref{thmppl}). Computations with PARI programs support this new philosophy of the Main Conjecture. The very frequent phenomenon of capitulation suggests Conjecture 1.2.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.
An analogue of a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:Let $L$ be a number field and let $\ell$ be a prime number. Rasmussen and Tamagawa conjectured, in a precise sense, that abelian varieties whose field of definition of the $\ell$-power torsion is both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $L(\mu_\ell)$ and unramified away from $\ell$ are quite rare. In this paper, we formulate an analogue of the Rasmussen--Tamagawa conjecture for non-isotrivial abelian varieties defined over function fields. We provide a proof of our analogue in the case of elliptic curves. In higher dimensions, when the base field is a subfield of the complex numbers, we show that our conjecture is a consequence of the uniform geometric torsion conjecture. Finally, using a theorem of Bakker and Tsimerman we also prove our conjecture unconditionally for abelian varieties with real multiplication.

On The Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field and $K$ a finite abelian CM extension of $F$. Using class field theory, we show that our previous result giving a strong form of the Brumer-Stark conjecture implies the minus part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for the Tate motive associated to $K/F$. We work integrally over $\mathbf{Z}$, in particular the prime 2 is not inverted. This note can be viewed as our perspective on the recent work of Bullach, Burns, Daoud, and Seo. Following their philosophy, we show that the functorial properties (i.e. norm compatibilities) connecting the strong Brumer-Stark conjecture for varying number fields actually implies the minus part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture.

On the Mordell-Weil Ranks of supersingular abelian varieties over $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extensions

Abstract:Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $K$ with supersingular reduction at both primes above $p$ in $K$. Under certain assumptions, we give a growth estimate for the Mordell--Weil rank of $A$ over finite extensions inside the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of $K$. In the last section, written by Chris Williams, he includes some speculative remarks on the $p$-adic $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GSp}(4)$ corresponding to the multi-signed Selmer groups constructed in this paper.

The Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture

Abstract:We prove the Relative Manin-Mumford Conjecture for families of abelian varieties in characteristic 0. We follow the Pila-Zannier method to study special point problems, and we use the Betti map which goes back to work of Masser and Zannier in the case of curves. The key new ingredients compared to previous applications of this approach are a height inequality proved by both authors of the current paper and Dimitrov, and the first-named author's study of certain degeneracy loci in subvarieties of abelian schemes. We also strengthen this result and prove a criterion for torsion points to be dense in a subvariety of an abelian scheme over $\mathbb{C}$. The Uniform Manin-Mumford Conjecture for curves embedded in their Jacobians was first proved by Kühne. We give a new proof, as a corollary to our main theorem, that does not use equidistribution.

Abstract:It is shown that, up to isometry, all but finitely many closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with a given trace field $K$ admit 0.34 as a Margulis number. This is deduced from a more technical result giving a condition under which $\max(d(P,x\cdot P),d(P,y\cdot P))\ge0.34$ for every $P\in\HH^3$, where $x$ and $y$ lie in $\pizzle(E)$ for some number field $E$, generate a discrete torsion-free group of $\pizzle(\CC)$ and do not commute. Specifically, this is always the case if there is a valuation $v$ of $E$ such that (1) the residue field $k_v=\frako_v/\frakm_v$ of $v$ has sufficiently large characteristic, (2) $x\in\pizzle(\frako_v)$, and (3) the image of $x$ under the natural homomorphism $\pizzle(\frako_v)\to \pizzle(k_v)$ has order 7.

Abstract:We prove some new instances of a conjecture of Bachoc, Couvreur and Zémor that generalizes Freiman's $3k-4$ Theorem to a multiplicative version in a function field setting. As a consequence we find that if $F$ is a rational function field over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $S \subset F$ a finite dimensional $K$-vector space such that $\dim S^2 = 2\dim S + 1$, then the conjecture holds.

Abstract:We prove two conjectures proposed by Chabert and Halberstadt concerning Pólya groups of $S_4$-fields and $D_4$-fields. More generally, the latter will be proved for $D_n$-fields with $n \geq 4$ an even integer. Further, generalizing a result of Zantema, we also prove that the pre-Pólya group of a non-Galois field of a prime degree, e.g. an $A_5$-field, coincides with its Pólya group.
