Abstract:Motivated by its links to $\tau$-tilting theory, we introduce a generalization of cotorsion pairs in module categories. Such pairs are also linked to co-t-structures in corresponding triangulated categories, and to cotorsion pairs in certain extension closed (and hence extriangulated) subcategories, which we call two-term categories.

Abstract:We construct a (lax) Gray tensor product of $(\infty,2)$-categories and characterize it via a model-independent universal property. Namely, it is the unique monoidal biclosed structure on the $\infty$-category of $(\infty,2)$-categories which agrees with the classical Gray tensor product of strict 2-categories when restricted to the Gray cubes (i.e. the Gray tensor powers $[1]^{\otimes n}$ of the arrow category).

Abstract:We introduce some new symmetric tensor categories based on the combinatorics of trees: a discrete family $\mathcal{D}(n)$, for $n \ge 3$ an integer, and a continuous family $\mathcal{C}(t)$, for $t \ne 1$ a complex number. The construction is based on the general oligomorphic theory of Harman--Snowden, but relies on two non-trivial results we establish. The first determines the measures for the class of trees, and the second is a semi-simplicity theorem. These categories have some notable properties: for instance, $\mathcal{C}(t)$ is the first example of a 1-parameter family of pre-Tannakian categories of superexponential growth that cannot be obtained by interpolating categories of moderate growth.

Towards higher Frobenius functors for symmetric tensor categories

Abstract:We develop theory and examples of monoidal functors on tensor categories in positive characteristic that generalise the Frobenius functor from \cite{Os, EOf, Tann}. The latter has proved to be a powerful tool in the ongoing classification of tensor categories of moderate growth, and we demonstrate the similar potential of the generalisations. More explicitly, we describe a new construction of the generalised Verlinde categories $Ver_{p^n}$ in terms of representation categories of elementary abelian $p$-groups. This leads to families of functors relating to $Ver_{p^n}$ that we conjecture, and partially show, to exhibit the characteristic properties of the Frobenius functor relating to $Ver_p$.

A Syntax for Strictly Associative and Unital $\infty$-Categories

Abstract:We present the first definition of strictly associative and unital $\infty$-category. Our proposal takes the form of a type theory whose terms describe the operations of such structures, and whose definitional equality relation enforces desired strictness conditions. The key technical device is a new computation rule in the definitional equality of the theory, which we call insertion, defined in terms of a universal property. On terms for which it is defined, this operation "inserts" one of the arguments of a substituted coherence into the coherence itself, appropriately modifying the pasting diagram and result type, and simplifying the syntax in the process. We generate an equational theory from this reduction relation and we study its properties in detail, showing that it yields a decision procedure for equality. Expressed as a type theory, our model is well-adapted for generating and verifying efficient proofs of higher categorical statements. We illustrate this via an OCaml implementation, and give a number of examples, including a short encoding of the syllepsis, a 5-dimensional homotopy that plays an important role in the homotopy groups of spheres.

Abstract:This paper emerged as a result of tackling the following three issues. Firstly, we would like the well known embedding of bicategories into pseudo double categories to be monoidal, which it is not if one uses the usual notion of a monoidal pseudo double category. Secondly, in \cite{Gabi} the question was raised: which would be an alternative notion to intercategories of Grandis and Paré, so that monoids in Böhm's monoidal category $(Dbl,\ot)$ of strict double categories and strict double functors with a Gray type monoidal product be an example of it? We obtain and prove that precisely the monoidal structure of $(Dbl,\ot)$ resolves the first question. On the other hand, resolving the second question, we upgrade the category $Dbl$ to a tricategory $\DblPs$ and propose %an alternative definition of intercategories as to consider internal categories in this tricategory. %, enabling monoids in $(Dbl,\ot)$ to be examples of this gadget. Apart from monoids in $(Dbl,\ot)$ - more importanlty, weak pseudomonoids in a tricategory containing $(Dbl,\ot)$ as a sub 1-category - most of the examples of intercategories are also examples of this gadget, the ones that escape are those that rely on laxness of the product on the pullback, as duoidal categories. For the latter purpose we define categories internal to tricategories (of the type of $\DblPs$), which simultaneously serves our third motive. Namely, inspired by the tricategory and $(1\times 2)$-category of tensor categories, we prove under mild conditions that categories enriched over certain type of tricategories may be made into categories internal in them. We illustrate this occurrence for tensor categories with respect to the ambient tricategory $2\x\Cat_{wk}$ of 2-categories, pseudofunctors, pseudonatural transformations and modifications.

Abstract:Category theory in homotopy type theory is intricate as categorical laws can only be stated "up to homotopy", and thus require coherences. The established notion of a univalent category (as introduced by Ahrens et al.) solves this by considering only truncated types, roughly corresponding to an ordinary category. This fails to capture many naturally occurring structures, stemming from the fact that the naturally occurring structures in homotopy type theory are not ordinary, but rather higher categories. Out of the large variety of approaches to higher category theory that mathematicians have proposed, we believe that, for type theory, the simplicial strategy is best suited. Work by Lurie and Harpaz motivates the following definition. Given the first ( n +3) levels of a semisimplicial type S , we can equip S with three properties: first, contractibility of the types of certain horn fillers; second, a completeness property; and third, a truncation condition. We call this a complete semi-Segal n -type . This is very similar to an earlier suggestion by Schreiber. The definition of a univalent (1-) category by Ahrens et al. can easily be extended or restricted to the definition of a univalent n -category (more precisely, ( n ,1)-category) for n ∈ {0,1,2}, and we show that the type of complete semi-Segal n -types is equivalent to the type of univalent n -categories in these cases. Thus, we believe that the notion of a complete semi-Segal n -type can be taken as the definition of a univalent n -category. We provide a formalisation in the proof assistant Agda using a completely explicit representation of semi-simplicial types for levels up to 4.

Abstract:Properties of morphisms represented by so-called 'string diagrams' of monoidal categories (and their braided and symmetric derivatives), mainly their resistance in value to isotopic deformation, have made the usage of graphical calculi commonplace in category theory ever since the correspondence between diagrams and tensor categories was rigorously established by Joyal and Street in 1991. However, we find it important to make certain additions to the existing theory of monoidal categories and their diagrams, with the goal of extending to so-called 'infinitary monoidal categories'. Most crucially, we employ a structure inherently resistant to isotopic deformation, thus replacing topological details with categorical ones. In the process, we coherently introduce infinitary tensor product and transfinite composition into the diagrammatic formalism.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a small category admitting binary products. We show that the whole theory of monoidal $\mathcal{S}$-fibered categories, which is customarily formulated in terms of the usual internal tensor product, can be rephrased purely in terms of the associated external tensor product. More precisely, we construct a canonical dictionary relating the classical structures and properties of the internal tensor product to analogous structures and properties of the external tensor product: this applies to associativity, commutativity, and unit constraints, to projection formulae, as well as to monoidality of morphisms between monoidal $\mathcal{S}$-fibered categories. For instance, we show how Mac Lane's classical pentagon and hexagon axioms can be stated using the external tensor product. Our results provide a satisfactory abstract framework to study monoidal structures in the setting of perverse sheaves.

Abstract:We develop some foundations of commutative algebra, with a view towards algebraic geometry, in symmetric tensor categories. Most results establish analogues of classical theorems, in tensor categories which admit a tensor functor to some tensor category verifying specific conditions. This is in line with the current program which aims to describe tensor categories by their tensor functors to incompressible categories. We place particular emphasis on the notion of observable subgroups of affine group schemes in tensor categories, which in particular leads to some further insight into observability for classical affine group schemes.

On Almost-Type Special Structured Tensor Classes Associated with Semi-Positive Tensors

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce almost (strictly) semi-positive tensors, which extend the concept of almost (strictly) semimonotone matrices. Furthermore, we provide insights into the characteristics of the entries within these almost (strictly) semi-positive tensors and establish a condition that is both necessary and sufficient for categorizing the underlying tensor as an almost semi-positive tensor. Drawing inspiration from H. Väliaho's work on copositivity, we present the concept of almost (strictly) copositive tensors, which extends the notion of almost (strictly) copositive matrices to tensors. It is shown that a real symmetric tensor is almost (strictly) semi-positive if and only if it is almost (strictly) copositive and a symmetric almost (strictly) semi-positive tensor has a (nonpositive) negative $H^{++}$-eigenvalue. We also establish a relationship between (strictly) diagonally dominant and (strong) $\mathcal{M}$-tensors with (strictly) semi-positive tensors.

Abstract:Given 2-categories $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{D}$, let $\textrm{Lax}(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{D})$ denote the 2-category of lax functors, lax natural transformations and modifications, and $[\mathcal{C},\mathcal{D}]_\mathrm{lnt}$ its full sub-2-category of (strict) 2-functors. We give two isomorphic constructions of a 2-category $\mathcal{C}\boxtimes\mathcal{D}$ satisfying $\textrm{Lax}(\mathcal{C},\textrm{Lax}(\mathcal{D},\mathcal{E})) \cong [\mathcal{C}\boxtimes \mathcal{D},\mathcal{E}]_\mathrm{lnt}$, hence generalising the case of the free distributive law $1\boxtimes 1$. Abstract:We show that there is a braided tensor category structure on the category of C1-cofinite modules for the (universal or simple) Virasoro vertex operator algebras of arbitrary central charge. In the generic case of central charge c=13−6(t+t−1), with t∉Q, we prove semisimplicity, rigidity and non-degeneracy and also compute the fusion rules of this tensor category.
