Abstract:Challenges remain hindering the performance and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly for the nonstable interface between lead halide perovskite and charge extraction metal oxide layer. Herein, we report a simple yet scalable interfacial strategy to facilitate the assemble of high‐performance inverted PSCs and scale‐up modules. The hybrid interfacial layer containing self‐assembly triphenylamine and conjugated poly(arylamine) simultaneously improves the chemical stability, charge extraction and energy level alignment of hole‐selective interface, meanwhile promoting perovskite crystallization. Consequently, the correspondent inverted PSCs and modules achieved remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 24.5% and 20.7% (aperture area of 19.4 cm2), respectively. The PSCs maintained over 80% of its initial efficiency under one‐sun equivalent illumination of 1200 hours. This strategy is also effective to perovskite with various bandgaps, demonstrating the highest PCE of 19.6% for the 1.76‐eV bandgap PSCs. Abstract:Copper (I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) is an extremely cheap and intrinsically stable p-type hole transport material which is attractive for solar cell applications. However, its devices exhibit poor stability due to the severe degradation at the CuSCN/metal-electrodes interface and the origin is still unclear. Herein, the underlying degradation mechanism at CuSCN/metal (including Au, Ag and Al) interfaces is well unveiled, that metal electrodes induce the self-disproportionation reaction of Cu + in CuSCN (Cu + =Cu 0 +Cu 2+ ) through the alloying of Cu/metal, contributing to the interfacial degradation. This process in devices is spontaneous and sharply accelerated under the electric field, namely actual operation state. Thus, the metal-electrode was replaced with chemically stable carbon electrode to overcome the interface degradation, enabling efficient and stable n-i-p perovskite solar cells. Our finding uncovers the secret of degradation at CuSCN/metal-electrodes interface and provides the insight of the potential application of CuSCN in photoelectric devices, especially in solar cells.

Abstract:Interfacial engineering is of great concern in photovoltaic devices. Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have garnered much attention due to their impressive development in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Benefiting from high electron mobility and good energy-level alignment with perovskite, aqueous SnO2 as an electron transport layer has been widely used in n-i-p perovskite solar cells. However, the interfacial engineering of an aqueous SnO2 layer on PSCs is still an obscure and confusing process. Herein, we proposed the preparation of n-i-p perovskite solar cells with different concentrations of SnO2 as electron transport layers and achieved optimized PCE with an efficiency of 20.27%. I Interfacial engineering with regard to the SnO2 layer is investigated by observing the surface morphology, space charge-limited current (SCLC) with the use of an electron-only device, and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) of perovskite films.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their convenient fabrication and excellent photoelectric characteristics. The highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 25% has been realized. However, ZnO as electron transport layer based PSCs exhibit inferior PCE and stability because of the mismatched energy-band and undesirable interfacial recombination. Here, we introduce a thin layer of SnO2 nanocrystals to construct an interfacial engineering with gradient energy band and interfacial passivation via a facile wet chemical process at a low temperature. The best PCE obtained in this study reaches 18.36%, and the stability is substantially improved and maintains a PCE of almost 100% over 500 h. The low-temperature fabrication process facilitates the future application of ZnO/SnO2-based PSCs in flexible and stretchable electronics.

Abstract:The ionic nature of perovskites leads to abundant defects at the interface and grain boundaries of perovskite films, which are detrimental to the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, I-I-VI group CsCu5S3 (CCS) nanocrystals (NCs) were used as an interlayer between the perovskite film and hole transport layer in PSCs. The CCS NCs were synthesized via a facile colloidal chemistry approach and exhibited high air stability and strong absorption in the visible-to-near infrared range. The CCS interlayer effectively passivates the interfacial defects, which strongly suppresses non-radiative recombination in the PSCs. The CCS interlayer is favorable for energy levels between the perovskite and HTM to reduce carrier recombination. As a result, the devices with a CCS interlayer delivered a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.29% with good reproducibility and stability. In addition, the PSCs retained more than 85% of their original efficiency after storage for approximately 3000 h under ambient conditions. This work paves a new avenue for the development of high-efficiency PSCs and the application of Cu-based chalcogenide NCs.

Abstract:Interfaces between functional layers in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are of paramount importance in determining their efficiency and stability, but the interaction and stability of metal-hole conductor (HC) interfaces have received less attention. Here, we discover an intriguing transient behavior in devices which induces a profound efficiency fluctuation from 9 to 20% during the initial performance testing. Air exposure (e.g., oxygen and moisture) can significantly accelerate this nonequilibrium process and simultaneously enhance the device maximal efficiency. Structural analysis reveals that the chemical reaction between Ag and HC occurred during the metal deposition by thermal evaporation, leading to the formation of an insulating barrier layer at their interfaces, which results in a high charge-transport barrier and poor device performance. Accordingly, we propose a metal diffusion-associated barrier evolution mechanism to understand the metal/HC interfaces. To mitigate these detrimental effects, we strategically develop an interlayer strategy by introducing an ultrathin layer of molybdenum oxide (MoO3) between Ag and HC, which is found to effectively suppress the interfacial reaction, yielding highly reliable PSCs with instant high efficiency. This work provides new insights into understanding the metal-organic interfaces, and the developed interlayer strategy can be generally applicable to engineer other interfaces in realizing efficient and stable contacts.

Abstract:Although great efforts have been devoted to enhancing the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the performance of PSCs has been far lower than anticipated. Interface engineering is helpful for obtaining high efficiency and stability through control of the interfacial charge transfer in PSCs. This paper demonstrates that the efficiency and stability of PSCs can be enhanced by introducing stable α-CsPbI3 quantum dots (QDs) as an interface layer between the perovskite film and the hole transport material (HTM) layer. By synergistically controlling the valence band position (VBP) of the perovskite and the interface layer, an interface engineering strategy was successfully used to increase the efficiency of hole transfer from the perovskite to the HTM layer, resulting in the power conversion efficiency increasing from 15.17 to 18.56%. In addition, the enhancement of the stability of PSCs can be attributed to coating inorganic CsPbI3 QDs onto the perovskite layer, which have a high moisture stability and result in long-term stability of the PSCs in ambient air.

Abstract:Inverted perovskite solar cells are promising candidates in photovoltaic fields due to their low-temperature processing, simplified fabrication, and enhanced stability when compared with the conventional configuration. However, the significant non-radiative recombination losses and energy alignment mismatch at the perovskite/C60 interface limit the device's performance and long-term stability. To overcome this drawback, we introduced trifluoromethoxy-functionalized phenethylammonium iodide salts with high polarity between the perovskite and C60 electron transporting layer. This bifunctional interlayer not only effectively passivates the perovskite surface and interface but also reduces the minority carriers through the band rearrangement at this interface, thus significantly suppressing the deteriorating interfacial non-radiative recombination. The modified interlayer also facilitates electron extraction by reducing the offset between the perovskite and C60, contributing to an improved photocurrent and fill factor. The resultant inverted perovskite solar cell based on a Cs0.05FA0.85MA0.10Pb(I0.95Br0.05)3 composition reveals a power conversion efficiency of 24.7 % at the reverse scan and shows negligible efficiency loss after 600 h of maximum power point tracking under one-sun illumination. Overall, this feasible deposition of ammonium-based interlayer establishes a successful demonstration of efficient and stable inverted devices to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite photovoltaics
Understanding the Interfacial Reactions and Band Alignment for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells Built on Metal Substrates with Reduced Up‐scaling Losses

Abstract:Conventional perovskite solar cells (PSC) built on transparent‐conductive‐oxide (TCO) glass face a fundamental challenge to retain fill factor (FF) for large‐area up‐scaling due to series resistance loss. Building a perovskite solar cell on metal has the potential to reduce this FF loss and is promising for flexible applications. However, their efficiency and stability lag far behind their TCO counterparts. Herein we report our findings on (i) the complex chemical reactions and degradation‐promoting processes at different perovskite/metal (Cu, Au, Ag, and Mo) interfaces, which are closely linked with the inherent stability; and (ii) the interlayer engineering for perovskite/metal interface's band alignment, which plays an essential role in achieving high efficiency. Leveraging these findings, we achieve 21% power‐conversion‐efficiency (PCE) for 1‐cm[2] perovskite solar cells using a p‐i‐n top‐illumination structure on a molybdenum substrate, the highest reported for a PSC built on metal. Notably, the FF and PCE losses due to area up‐scaling are remarkably reduced by one order of magnitude relative to the counterparts on conventional TCO glass, highlighting an alternative pathway for PSC up‐scaling and module design. Abstract:Simultaneously improving device efficiency and stability is the most important issue in perovskite solar cell (PSC) research. Here, we strategically introduce a multi-functional interface layer (MFIL) with integrated roles of: (1) electron transport, (2) moisture barrier, (3) near-infrared photocurrent enhancement, (4) trap passivation, and (5) ion migration suppression to enhance the device performance. The narrow-band-gap non-fullerene acceptor, Y6, was screened out to replace the most commonly used PCBM in the inverted PSCs. A significantly improved power conversion efficiency of 21.0% was achieved, along with a remarkable stability (up to 1,700 h) without encapsulation under various external stimuli (light, heat, and moisture). Furthermore, systematic studies of the molecular orientation or passivation and the charge carrier dynamics at the interface between perovskite and MFIL were presented. These results offer deep insights for designing advanced interlayers and establish the correlations between molecular orientation, interface molecular bonding, trap state density, non-radiation recombination, and the device performance.

Abstract:Interface engineering has been proved to be a practical strategy to enhance power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of perovskite solar cells. Recently approaches involving ultra-thin layer deposition and vacuum-processing, while improving PCE, increase the processing complexity, and thus the overall cost. In this paper, we demonstrate a high-efficiency inverted planar perovskite solar cell, obtained with a simple wet-chemistry based, room-temperature, and cost-effective process, which synthesizes two interfacial layers: solution processed molybdenum oxide (named s-MoOx) for anode and titanium(IV) oxide bis(2,4-pentanedionate) (TOPD) for cathode buffer layers. Steady-state photoluminescence (PL), time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are conducted to characterize the charge transport properties, confirming an enhanced charge extraction efficiency and a suppressed charge recombination. In addition, the introduction of the interfacial layers facilities formation of an ohmic contact with the metal electrode, reducing the charge transfer resistance and increasing the FF to as high as 80.7%. The optimized solar cells achieve the best PCE of 16.04% which far exceeds the PCE of devices without these interfacial layers (PCE = 11.2%).

Abstract:Interface engineering is a simple and effective strategy for improving the photovoltaic performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, an interface co-modification strategy is proposed, using [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylenediammonium iodide (2FPPD) to modify the electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite (PVK) and the PVK/hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces, respectively. A series of characterizations demonstrate that the PCBM&2FPPD interface co-modification strategy effectively enhances the extraction and transport efficiency of carriers at the interface, passivates surface defects, inhibits the nonradiative recombination of carriers, and simultaneously inhibits ion migration. Moreover, this strategy improves the crystallinity and surface hydrophobicity of PVK and optimizes the energy level alignment of PSCs. As a result, all photovoltaic parameters are improved after optimization, where the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs has increased from 17.01% to 18.36%. Meanwhile, the optimized PSCs show excellent environmental stability, which can be stably stored in air (RH = 10–20%) for about 800 h.

Abstract:Interfacial layer is deemed as an efficient approach to align the energy level and reduce the carrier recombination at the interfaces. Therefore, for the first time, a facile yet effective method to enhance carrier transport by copper oxide quantum dots (CuOx QDs) interfacial layer in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is developed. The high mobility of CuOx QDs interfacial layer could boost the performance of PSCs by providing a better electrical carrier transport. Furthermore, the higher crystallinity of perovskite layer on CuOx QDs layer reduced the charge trap state densities, which leads to an increase in carrier recombination resistance. As a result, our inverted PSCs exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.91%, a 14.6% increment compared with the PCE of a control device. Our finding demonstrates the promise of enhancing carrier transport by interfacial layer for high-performance PSCs and expands choice of interfacial layer materials in PSCs.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been rapidly developed in the past decade. Owing to its excellent power conversion efficiency with robust and low-cost fabrication, perovskite quickly becomes one of the most promising candidates for the next-generation photovoltaic technology. With the development of PSCs, the interface engineering has witnessed its increasingly critical role in maximizing the device performance as well as the long-term stability, because the interfaces in PSCs are closely correlated with the defect management, carrier dynamics and surface passivation. This review focuses on interfacial modification between the perovskite active layer and the charge transport layer, as well as the recent advances on high-efficiency and stable PSCs driven by interface engineering strategies. The contributing roles of interface engineering in terms of defect passivation, inhibiting ion migration, optimization of energy band alignment and morphological control are discussed. Finally, based on the latest progress and advances, strategies and opportunities for the future research on interface engineering for PSCs are proposed to promote the development of perovskite photovoltaic technology.

Abstract:In this Communication, a self-organization method of [ 6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid 2-((2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl) (methyl) amino) ethyl ester (PCBDAN) interlayer in between 6,6-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and indium tin oxide (ITO) has been proposed to improve the performance of N-I-P perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The introduction of self-organized PCBDAN interlayer can effectively reduce the work function of ITO and therefore eliminate the interface barrier between electron transport layer and electrode. It is beneficial for enhancing the charge extraction and decreasing the recombination loss at the interface. By employing this strategy, a highest power conversion efficiency of 18.1% has been obtained with almost free hysteresis. Furthermore, the N-I-P PSCs have excellent stability under UV-light soaking, which can maintain 85% of its original highest value after 240 h accelerated UV aging. This self-organization method for the formation of interlayer can not only simplify the fabrication process of low-cost PSCs, but also be compatible with the roll-to-roll device processing on flexible substrates.

Abstract:Inorganic hole transporting materials (HTMs) are the most promising candidates to tackle the troublesome stability issue of conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs). CuSCN is one of the most efficient inorganic HTMs in the n-i-p structure. However, CuSCN-based PSCs show inferior efficiency compared with other HTMs, greatly limiting their development. The limitation is mainly attributed to two factors: (i) the interface issue caused by the damage of the diethyl sulfide solvent of CuSCN on perovskite; (ii) the inferior conductivity of CuSCN compared with other HTMs such as Spiro-OMeTAD and NiO x . Herein, we proposed an interface modifier by adopting the self-assembled monolayer molecule Me-4PACz, which not only protects perovskite from DES damage but also promotes carrier extraction and transportation. Combined with the LiSCN doping strategy, a high efficiency of 20.95% was achieved for n-i-p PSCs based on CuSCN. More importantly, the unencapsulated device exhibited much-enhanced stability in air compared with the device using Spiro-OMeTAD. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential of CuSCN as an efficient and stable HTM by reasonable doping and modulation strategies.

Abstract:While organic–inorganic halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) show great potential for realizing low‐cost and easily fabricated photovoltaics, the unexpected defects and long‐term stability against moisture are the main issues hindering their practical applications. Herein, a strategy is demonstrated to address the main issues by introducing lead sulfide quantum dots (QDs) on the perovskite surface as the multifunctional interface layer on perovskite film through establishing perovskite as the ligand on PbS QDs. Meanwhile, the multifunctions are featured in three aspects including the strong interactions of PbS QDs with perovskites particularly at the grain boundaries favoring good QDs coverage on perovskites for ultimate smooth morphology; an inhibition of iodide ions mobilization by the strong interaction between iodide and the incorporated QDs; and the reduction of the dangling bonds of Pb2+ by the sulfur atoms of PbS QDs. Finally, the device performances are highly improved due to the reduced defects and non‐radiative recombination. The results show that both open‐circuit voltage and fill factor are significantly improved to the high values of 1.13 V and 80%, respectively in CH3NH3PbI3‐based PSCs, offering a high efficiency of 20.64%. The QDs incorporation also enhances PSCs' stability benefitting from the induced hydrophobic surface and suppressed iodide mobilization.

Recent advances in the interfacial engineering of organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells: a materials perspective

Abstract:Research on perovskites, a highly promising type of semiconductor material in the field of photovoltaics, has made amazing progress. The development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has so far reached a certified power conversion eﬃciency (PCE) of 25.7%. Since the interfaces in PSCs are closely connected to the carrier dynamics (charge separation, transport, injection, collection and recombination), interfacial engineering has become a powerful tool in enhancing the device performance and long-term stability. This review focuses on critically discussing the emerging materials and strategies for interfacial engineering at the charge transport layer (CTL)/perovskite and CTL/electrode interfaces in PSCs with both normal and inverted structures. In particular, the underlying mechanisms of various materials for interfacial engineering in maximizing the PCE and the long-term stability of PSCs are systematically demonstrated. Finally, a brief summary of the latest advances and breakthroughs, and a perspective on the future research directions are presented, which are expected to promote the development of this important research field.
