Abstract:We introduce the concept of maximal dissipative measure-valued solution to the complete Euler system. These are solutions that maximize the entropy production rate. We show that these solutions exist under fairly general hypotheses imposed on the data and constitutive relations.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of dissipative measure-valued solution to the complete Euler system describing the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid. These solutions are characterized by a parameterized (Young) measure and a dissipation defect in the total energy balance. The dissipation defect dominates the concentration errors in the equations satisfied by the Young measure. A dissipative measure-valued solution can be seen as the most general concept of solution to the Euler system retaining its structural stability. In particular, we show that a dissipative measure-valued solution necessarily coincides with a classical one on its life span provided they share the same initial data.

Abstract:Abstract To circumvent the ill-posedness issues present in various models of continuum fluid mechanics, we present a dynamical systems approach aiming at the selection of physically relevant solutions. Even under the presence of infinitely many solutions to the full Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid, our approach permits to select a system of solutions (one trajectory for every initial condition) satisfying the classical semiflow property. Moreover, the selection respects the well accepted admissibility criteria for physical solutions, namely, maximization of the entropy production rate and the weak–strong uniqueness principle. Consequently, strong solutions are always selected whenever they exist and stationary states are stable and included in the selection as well. To this end, we introduce a notion of dissipative solution , which is given by a triple of density, momentum and total entropy defined as expectations of a suitable measure-valued solution.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for a damped Euler-Maxwell system with no ionic background. For smooth enough data satisfying suitable so-called dispersive conditions, we establish the global in time existence and uniqueness of a strong solution that decays uniformly in time. Our method is inspired by the works of D. Serre and M. Grassin dedicated to the compressible Euler system.

Abstract:The dissipative solutions can be seen as a convenient generalization of the concept of weak solution to the isentropic Euler system. They can be seen as expectations of the Young measures associated to a suitable measure-valued solution of the problem. We show that dissipative solutions coincide with weak solutions starting from the same initial data on condition that: (i) the weak solution enjoys certain Besov regularity; (ii) the symmetric velocity gradient of the weak solution satisfies a one-sided Lipschitz bound.

Abstract:We consider variational problem related to entropy maximization in the two-dimensional Euler equations, in order to investigate the long-time dynamics of solutions with bounded vorticity. Using variations on the classical min-max principle and borrowing ideas from optimal transportation and quantitative rearrangement inequalities, we prove results on the structure of entropy maximizers arising in the investigation of the long-time behavior of vortex patches. We further show that the same techniques apply in the study of stability of the canonical Gibbs measure associated to a system of point vortices.

We consider several pressureless variants of the compressible Euler equation driven by nonlocal repulsion-attraction and alignment forces with Poisson interaction. Under an energy admissibility criterion, we prove existence of global measure-valued solutions, i.e., very weak solutions described by a classical Young measure together with appropriate concentration defects. We then investigate the evolution of a relative energy functional to compare a measure-valued solution to a regular solution emanating from the same initial datum. This leads to a (partial) weak-strong uniqueness principle.

Abstract:By means of a unifying measure-theoretic approach, we establish lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the space-time set which can support anomalous dissipation for weak solutions of fluid equations, both in the presence or absence of a physical boundary. Boundary dissipation, which can occur at both the time and the spatial boundary, is analyzed by suitably modifying the Duchon & Robert interior distributional approach. One implication of our results is that any bounded Euler solution (compressible or incompressible) arising as a zero viscosity limit of Navier–Stokes solutions cannot have anomalous dissipation supported on a set of dimension smaller than that of the space. In the three-dimensional case, this matches with the Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg partial regularity.

A Principle of Maximum Entropy for the Navier-Stokes Equations

Abstract:A principle of maximum entropy is proposed in the context of viscous incompressible flow in Eulerian coordinates. The relative entropy functional, defined over the space of $L^2$ divergence-free velocity fields, is maximized relative to alternate measures supported over the energy--enstrophy surface. Since thermodynamic equilibrium distributions are characterized by maximum entropy, connections are drawn with stationary statistical solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Special emphasis is on the correspondence with the final statistics described by Kolmogorov's theory of fully developed turbulence.

Abstract:Purely dissipative evolution equations are often cast as gradient flow structures, z ̇=K(z)DS(z), where the variable z of interest evolves towards the maximum of a functional S according to a metric defined by an operator K. While the functional often follows immediately from physical considerations (e.g., the thermodynamic entropy), the operator K and the associated geometry does not necessarily do so (e.g., Wasserstein geometry for diffusion). In this paper, we present a variational statement in the sense of maximum entropy production that directly delivers a relationship between the operator K and the constraints of the system. In particular, the Wasserstein metric naturally arises here from the conservation of mass or energy, and depends on the Onsager resistivity tensor, which, itself, may be understood as another metric, as in the steepest entropy ascent formalism. This variational principle is exemplified here for the simultaneous evolution of conserved and nonconserved quantities in open systems. It thus extends the classical Onsager flux-force relationships and the associated variational statement to variables that do not have a flux associated to them. We further show that the metric structure K is intimately linked to the celebrated Freidlin-Wentzell theory of stochastically perturbed gradient flows, and that the proposed variational principle encloses an infinite-dimensional fluctuation-dissipation statement.

Abstract:The maximum entropy moment system extends the Euler equation to non equilibrium gas flows by considering higher order moments such as the heat flux. This paper presents a systematic study of the maximum entropy moment system of Boltzmann equation. We consider a hypothetical one-dimensional gas and study a five-moment model. A numerical algorithm for solving the optimization problem is developed to produce the maximum entropy distribution function from known moments, and the asymptotic behaviour of the system around the singular region known as the Junk's line, as well as that near the boundary of the realizability domain is analyzed. Furthermore, we study the properties of the system numerically, including the behaviour of the system around the Maxwellian and within the interior of the realizability domain, and properties of its characteristic fields. Our studies show the higher order entropy-based moment models to differ significantly from the Euler equations. Much of this difference comes from the singularity near the Junk's line, which would be removed if a truncation of the velocity domain is employed.

Abstract:Abstract We study the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations subject to stochastic forcing. We develop a concept of dissipative martingale solutions, where the nonlinear terms are described by generalised Young measures. We construct these solutions as the vanishing viscosity limit of solutions to the corresponding stochastic Navier–Stokes equations. This requires a refined stochastic compactness method incorporating the generalised Young measures. As a main novelty, our solutions satisfy a form of the energy inequality which gives rise to a weak–strong uniqueness result (pathwise and in law). A dissipative martingale solution coincides (pathwise or in law) with the strong solution as soon as the latter exists.

Abstract:A matter of fact is that extremal principles have been introduced in mechanics in more (Euler, Lagrange) or less (Hamilton) than 200 years ago. One may also observe an impact of thermodynamic extremal principles based on maximum dissipation due to all the entropy production expressed in several disciplines. According fields are theory of communication, statistical mechanics and later physics of earth since already 70 years. The current paper offers some (historical) overview on several applications. "Ziegler's principle" is an implementation of the maximum entropy production going out to the dissipation and yielding a maximum dissipation. The goal of this paper is now the implementation of this extremal principle performed along an algebraic concept. Such a concept can be extended to a system with several internal variables as outlined by Coleman and Gurtin in context with the Gibbs (free) energy.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the incompressible Euler equations. In Onsager's critical classes we provide explicit formulas for the Duchon–Robert measure in terms of the regularization kernel and a family of vector-valued measures , having some Hölder regularity with respect to the direction . Then, we prove energy conservation for solutions, in both the absence or presence of a physical boundary. This result generalises the previously known case of Vortex Sheets, showing that energy conservation follows from the structure of incompressible vector fields rather than the flow having "organized singularities". The interior energy conservation features the use of Ambrosio's anisotropic optimization of the convolution kernel and it differs from the usual energy conservation arguments by heavily relying on the incompressibility of the vector field. This is the first energy conservation proof, for a given class of solutions, which fails to simultaneously apply to both compressible and incompressible models, coherently with compressible shocks having non-trivial entropy production. To run the boundary analysis we introduce a notion of "normal Lebesgue trace" for general vector fields, very reminiscent of the one for BV functions. We show that having such a null normal trace is basically equivalent to have vanishing boundary energy flux. This goes beyond the previous approaches, laying down a setup which applies to every Lipschitz bounded domain. Allowing any Lipschitz boundary introduces several technicalities to the proof, with a quite geometrical/measure-theoretical flavour.

Dissipation for codimension 1 singular structures to incompressible Euler

Abstract:We consider weak solutions to the incompressible Euler equations. It is shown that energy conservation holds in any Onsager critical class in which smooth functions are dense. The argument is independent of the specific critical regularity and the underling PDE. This groups several energy conservation results and it suggests that critical spaces where smooth functions are dense are not at all different from subcritical ones, although possessing the "minimal" regularity index. Then, we study properties of the dissipation $D$ in the case of bounded solutions that are allowed to jump on $\mathcal{H}^d$-rectifiable space-time sets $\Sigma$, which are the natural dissipative regions in the compressible setting. As soon as both the velocity and the pressure posses traces on $\Sigma$, it is shown that $\Sigma$ is $D$-negligible. The argument makes the role of the incompressibility very apparent, and it prevents dissipation on codimension 1 sets even if they happen to be densely distributed. As a corollary, we deduce energy conservation for bounded solutions of "special bounded deformation", providing the first energy conservation criterion in a critical class where only an assumption on the "longitudinal" increment is made, while the energy flux does not vanish for kinematic reasons.

A Lagrangian approach to totally dissipative evolutions in Wasserstein spaces

Abstract:We introduce and study the class of totally dissipative multivalued probability vector fields (MPVF) $\boldsymbol{\mathrm F}$ on the Wasserstein space $(\mathcal{P}_2(\mathsf{X}),W_2)$ of Euclidean or Hilbertian probability measures. We show that such class of MPVFs is in one to one correspondence with law-invariant dissipative operators in a Hilbert space $L^2(\Omega,\mathcal{B},\mathbb{P};\mathsf{X})$ of random variables, preserving a natural maximality property. This allows us to import in the Wasserstein framework many of the powerful tools from the theory of maximal dissipative operators in Hilbert spaces, deriving existence, uniqueness, stability, and approximation results for the flow generated by a maximal totally dissipative MPVF and the equivalence of its Eulerian and Lagrangian characterizations. We will show that demicontinuous single-valued probability vector fields satisfying a metric dissipativity condition are in fact totally dissipative. Starting from a sufficiently rich set of discrete measures, we will also show how to recover a unique maximal totally dissipative version of a MPVF, proving that its flow provides a general mean field characterization of the asymptotic limits of the corresponding family of discrete particle systems.Such an approach also reveals new interesting structural properties for gradient flows of displacement convex functionals with a core of discrete measures dense in energy.
