Abstract:Harnessing their excellent physical attributes, two-dimensional nanostructures have gained prominences as re-inforcements in polymer nanocomposites. Given the intricate structure of nanofillers and the varied interfacial connections, in-depth understanding of the strengthening mechanisms becomes pivotal for optimizing nano-composite design. By varying the GO's morphology, a notable divergence of approximately 30% is evident in the interfacial shear strength. This divergence is attributed to the mechanical interlocking effect instigated by the presence of -O-and-OH functional groups. Functionalizing with groups like-CH3-CH2-NH2 (-Ethylamine) and-(HOCH2)3CNH2 (-TRIS) enhances the mass density of PE polymers at the interphase, which changes the interface sliding (low-density interphase) to the cohesive sliding during the pull-out process. As a result, the maximum interfacial shear strength (204-223 MPa) of these two samples is much larger than that of the pristine GO/PE (149-151 MPa), and even comparable with the pure PE's tensile strength. Intriguingly, shorter or highly flexible functional group exhibit a comparatively weaker influence on the interfacial shear strength. Moreover, as the sliding surface shifts toward the cohesive zone, diminishing sample thickness (less than 60 angstrom) generally corre-sponds to augmented interfacial shear strength due to the boundary confinement effect. In summary, this work offers a comprehensively elucidation of GO/PE pull-out behavior, facilitating the design of nanocomposites with exceptional mechanical performance.
Superstretchable Nacre-Mimetic Graphene/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Composite Film Based on Interfacial Architectural Engineering

Abstract:Through designing hierarchical structures, particularly optimizing the chemical and architectural interactions at its inorganic/organic interface, nacre has achieved an excellent combination of contradictory mechanical properties such as strength and toughness, which is highly demanded yet difficult to achieve by most synthetic materials. Most techniques applied to develop nacre-mimetic composites have been focused on mimicking the "brick-and-mortar" structure, but the interfacial architectural features, especially the asperities and mineral bridges of "bricks", have been rarely concerned, which are of equal importance for enhancing mechanical properties of nacre. Here, we used a modified bidirectional freezing method followed by uniaxial pressing and chemical reduction to assemble a nacre-mimetic graphene/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite film, with both asperities and bridges introduced in addition to the lamellar layers to mimic the interfacial architectural interactions found in nacre. As such, we have developed a composite film that is not only strong (up to ∼150.9 MPa), but also tough (up to ∼8.50 MJ/m3), and highly stretchable (up to ∼10.44%), difficult to obtain by other methods. This was all achieved by only interfacial architectural engineering within the traditional "brick-and-mortar" structure, without introducing a third component or employing chemical cross-linker as in some other nacre-mimetic systems. More importantly, we believe that the design principles and processing strategies reported here can also be applied to other material systems to develop strong and stretchable materials.
A General Route to Robust Nacre-Like Graphene Oxide Films.

Abstract:Artificial nacre-like composite films of graphene oxide (GO) with a variety of commercially available water-soluble polymers were fabricated by a gel-film transformation (GFT) technique. The blending of a polymer into the aqueous dispersion of GO can modulate the interaction between GO sheets. Typically, the attraction force between polymer and GO sheets overcomes the dominant hydration and electrostatic repulsive forces between GO sheets, promoting the gelation of GO. Cast drying the resultant GO hydrogel containing small amounts of polymer (1-20 wt % relative to GO depending on the intrinsic structures of polymers) generates layered GO composite films with tensile strengths over 200 MPa and failure strains larger than 3.0%, which are higher than those of natural nacre and most nacre-like GO films. These results indicate that GO/polymer composite hydrogels are excellent precursors for nacre-like GO films and that the GFT approach is a general route toward the large-scale fabrication of nacre-like GO films with unique combinations of high strength and high toughness.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) has recently been highlighted as a promising multipurpose two-dimensional material. However, free-standing graphene oxide films suffer from poor strength and flexibility, which limits scaling-up of production and lifetime structural robustness in applications. Inspired by the relationship between the organic and inorganic components of the hierarchical structure of nacre found in mollusk shells, we have fabricated self-assembled, layered graphene-based composite films. The organic phase of our composite is produced via environmentally friendly and economical methods based on bacterial production of gamma-poly(glutamic acid) (PGA). Composite films made of GO, PGA, and divalent cations (Ca2+) were prepared through a slow solvent evaporation method at ambient temperature, resulting in a nacre-like layered structure. These biobased nanocomposite films showed impressive mechanical properties, which resulted from a synergistic combination of hydrogen bonding with the bacterially produced PGA and ionic bonding with calcium ions (Ca2+). The GO/PGA/Ca2+ composite films possessed a high strength of 150 +/- 51.9 MPa and a high Young's modulus of 21.4 +/- 8.7 GPa, which represents an increase of 120% and over 70% with respect to pure GO films. We provide rational design strategies for the production of graphene-based films with improved mechanical performance, which can be applied in filtration purification of wastewater in the paper, food, beverage, pigment, and pharmaceuticals industries, as well as for manufacturing of functional membranes and surface coatings.

Abstract:Nanoscale graphene oxide-lipid composites have shown wide applications in the field of biosensing and nanosafety. Macroscopic free-standing membranes of this combination potentially offer excellent mechanical properties which can be attributed to the inherent strength of graphene oxide(GO). Previous experimental studies have mostly dealt with monolayer or bilayer interactions of lipids with graphene and graphene oxide surfaces. In our study, we report for the first time, a simple and scalable fabrication method where Small Unilamellar Vesicles (SUVs) of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine(DOPC) combine with graphene oxide to produce stable nanocomposites via self-assembly. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images of the composite revealed layer-by-layer structures, reconfirmed by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) results which show a proportional increase in the interlayer separation with an increasing ratio of lipid in graphene oxide. The nanocomposite thus fabricated mimics naturally occurring nacre shell structures where graphene oxide substitutes the strong aragonite layers, and the intermediate lipid layers provide the necessary elasticity pertaining to protein chitin in nacre. The addition of lipids to graphene-based nanocomposites also serves as a biodegradable alternative to using polymers as a popular reinforcement agent. The ease of fabrication method reported facilitates the production of stable GO-Lipid membranes in variable scales and geometries.

Abstract:Sustainable structural design, utilizing material to imitate natural biological systems, presents both promise and challenges. By avoiding interfacial problems encountered in composite counterparts, such designs offer self-adaptive materials for smart housing and green architecture, etc. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) flakes into anisotropic films through a simple blade coating technique. Through the application of blade coating to a highly concentrated nematic GO suspension, we successfully fabricate GO films with morphological gradient and patterning. Additionally, we propose a statistical analysis method utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images for the characterization of materials with macroscopic surface morphology. Furthermore, we explore the application of these GO films as low-dimensional soft actuators, revealing their outstanding stimuli-responsive performance and self-adaptation to environment. Such robust and flexible films can be used as integral building elements in the bioinspired design of sustainable smart housing facilitating remote robotization and sensing capabilities.

Abstract:This paper reports an artificial nacre-like composite paper based on sodium alginate (SA) and graphene oxide (GO) by lanthanide ions cross-linking. SA-coated GO were used as building “bricks and mortar” and self-assembled into aligned GO/SA composite hydrogel by the coordination of lanthanide ions. Subsequently, the hierarchical GO/SA composite paper was formed under evaporation. Four types of lanthanide ions (Nd3+, Ce3+, Gd3+, and Yb3+) were used to fabricate hierarchical GO/SA composite papers. The lanthanides enhanced the mechanical properties of the GO/SA composite papers (strength of 255.8 ± 8.52 MPa and toughness of 4.83 ± 0.28 MJ m−3) and endowed the papers with high stability. Due to the anisotropic nature along parallel and perpendicular directions, the hierarchical GO/SA composite papers exhibited a specific thermal conductivity. These features greatly expand the application of the composite papers, which are believed to show competitive advantages in aerospace, electronic devices, and thermal interface materials.

Abstract:A strong graphene oxide (GO)-based artificial nacre is developed by using a simple and efficient interfacial chemistry. GO is simultaneously reduced and functionalized with tannic acid (TA) and the resulting TA-reduced GO (TA-RGO) exhibits a high aqueous dispersibility owing to abundant phenol groups. TA-RGO sheets are incorporated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and then assembled into an artificial nacre-like structure by vacuum-assisted filtration to induce the formation of multidentate interfacial hydrogen bonding between TA-RGO and PVA. Based on the multidentate hydrogen bonding, the resulting TA-RGO/PVA (1 wt%) composite film presented an overall and efficient reinforcement of tensile strength (186.1 ± 12.8 MPa), modulus (15.2 ± 1.2 GPa) and toughness (1546 ± 248 kJ/m3) compared to those of GO (83.3 ± 5.4 MPa, 8.9 ± 0.4 GPa and 1434 ± 152 kJ/m3) and TA-RGO (87.6 ± 10.6 MPa, 13.8 ± 1.4 GPa and 306 ± 51 kJ/m3), respectively. The present study demonstrates the rational design of interfacial interaction can greatly improve the performance of a structural composite material.

Abstract:Strength and toughness have been often considered as mutually exclusive properties in many synthetic materials. Natural materials like nacre have overcome this conflict by optimizing internal architecture at the nanoscale. In this work, nacre-inspired graphene oxide (GO)-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposite is fabricated, which has a "brick and mortar" microstructure and enhanced interfacial strength. It has a tensile strength of 261 ± 7 MPa and toughness of 5 ± 0.2 MJ m−3, which are 55% and 42% greater than conventional GO/PMMA nanocomposites. In addition, the nanocomposite has excellent stability in wet environments. This work, therefore, provides a facile method to fabricate novel nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) based two dimensional (2D) nanosheets show great advantages for constructing nacre-like composites. Among the existing nacre structures, GO sheets were mostly used as hard inorganic components as those in nacre to improve the mechanical properties. Here, a novel nanoconfined electrodeposition process was explored to fabricate nacre-like Cu2O/graphene oxide (GO) thin films, where GO nanosheets functioned as the soft organic components in nacre. The inter-layer spaces between the GO nanosheets were used as templates for the growth of single crystalline Cu2O nanolayers, with thicknesses of several to tens of nanometers, though Cu2O belongs to the cubic phase. Due to the small lattice mismatch between the (1 (1) over bar0) plane of Cu2O and the (001) plane of GO, the Cu2O nanolayers most likely grew on the (001) plane of GO. The resulting nacre-like thin film demonstrates a 6 times greater hardness and a 3 times greater Young's modulus, than those of pure GO thin films. This technique provides a promising route for the synthesis of nacre-like metal (metal-oxide)/GO composites.

Abstract:Nowadays, despite the fact that recent progress has been reported to mimic natural structural materials (especially nacre), designing bioinspired ultrastrong composites in a universal, viable, and scalable manner still remains a long-standing challenge. In particular, pistachio shells show high tissue strength attributed to the cellulose sheet laminated microstructures. Compared with nacre, pistachio shells own interlocking mortise-tenon joints in their structure, which offer higher energy dissipation and deformability. Here we present a strategy to produce nanocomposites with pistachio-mimetic structures through repeated kneading of graphene oxide (GO) in a dynamic covalent and supramolecular poly(sodium thioctic) (pST) system. The dynamic nature of the polymeric backbones endows the resultant GO-based composite with full recyclability and three-dimensional shapeability. The superior mechanical properties of the pistachio-mimetic composite can be attributed to the mortise-tenon joints design in the structure, which has not been achieved in the nacre-mimetic composite. The resulting composite also exhibits high thermal conductivity (15.6 W/(m·K)), yielding an alternative approach to design in engineered and thermal management materials.

Abstract:The synergistic toughening effect of building blocks and interface interaction exists in natural materials, such as nacre. Herein, inspired by one-dimensional (1D) nanofibrillar chitin and two-dimensional (2D) calcium carbonate platelets of natural nacre, we have fabricated integrated strong and tough ternary bio-inspired nanocomposites (artificial nacre) successfully via the synergistic effect of 2D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets and 1D double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) and hydrogen bonding cross-linking with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix. Moreover, the crack mechanics model with crack deflection by 2D rGO nanosheets and crack bridging by 1D DWNTs and PVA chains induces resultant artificial nacre exhibiting excellent fatigue-resistance performance. These outstanding characteristics enable the ternary bioinspired nanocomposites have many promising potential applications, for instance, aerospace, flexible electronics devices and so forth. This synergistic toughening strategy also provides an effective way to assemble robust graphene-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:Graphene and graphene derivatives are among the extensively studied materials as multifunctional reinforcement for polymeric materials. This is due to their relative ease of synthesis, interface engineering and wide range of property tailoring. In this study, we present a novel method for the fabrication of aligned graphene oxide/polyvinylidene fluoride (GO/PVDF) nanocomposite inspired by nacre-like materials. The process is based on the electrospinning of GO/PVDF solution on a rotating collecting drum to produce aligned fiber mats. The GO particles are forced to align in the direction of the fibers axis through the induced shear forces and the electric field resulting from the electrospinning process. Layered films can then be produced by successive folding and hot pressing. Microstructural analysis showed that the GO particles are well distributed and aligned with respect to the fiber axis. Mechanical testing showed enhancement in modulus and strength up to 0.3 wt%. However, fracture strain increased at 0.1 wt% and then decreased gradually for 0.2 and 0.3 wt%. Finite element modeling revealed the activation of crack deflection and excessive plastic deformation for 0.1 wt%, while cracks tend for coalesce forming a fracture plane and brittle fracture with further increase of GO content.

High Performances of Artificial Nacre-Like Graphene Oxide-Carrageenan Bio-Nanocomposite Films

Abstract:This study was inspired by the unique multi-scale and multi-level 'brick-and-mortar' (B&M) structure of nacre layers. We prepared the B&M, environmentally-friendly graphene oxide-carrageenan (GO-Car) nanocomposite films using the following steps. A natural polyhydroxy polymer, carrageenan, was absorbed on the surface of monolayer GO nanosheets through hydrogen-bond interactions. Following this, a GO-Car hybridized film was produced through a natural drying process. We conducted structural characterization in addition to analyzing mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of the films. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that the nanocomposite films had a similar morphology and structure to nacre. Furthermore, the results from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) were used to explain the GO-Car interaction. Analysis from static mechanical testers showed that GO-Car had enhanced Young's modulus, maximum tensile strength and breaking elongation compared to pure GO. The GO-Car nanocomposite films, containing 5% wt. of Car, was able to reach a tensile strength of 117 MPa. The biocompatibility was demonstrated using a RAW264.7 cell test, with no significant alteration found in cellular morphology and cytotoxicity. The preparation process for GO-Car films is simple and requires little time, with GO-Car films also having favorable biocompatibility and mechanical properties. These advantages make GO-Car nanocomposite films promising materials in replacing traditional petroleum-based plastics and tissue engineering-oriented support materials.

Abstract:Through electrophoretic deposition (EPD), hybrid graphene oxide-polyethyleneimine–coated carbon fibers (named as ACF/GO-PEI) were prepared to improve the interfacial performances between carbon fibers and epoxy matrix. These rigid GO sheets and flexible PEI polymer could work together, resulting in the improvement of mechanical performances. In this strategy, rigid GO sheets make mechanical interlocking in the interface of composites, and flexible PEI bridges all three parts, i.e., fiber, GO, and epoxy, by covalent bond and electrovalent bond. Moreover, homogenized distribution of the GO-PEI sheets covered on carbon fiber owing to the electrostatic interactions of the positively charged ions and steric effect, effectively increasing the surface roughness and surface energy. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of ACF/GO-PEI reinforced epoxy composite could reach 79.2 MPa. In comparison with untreated one, the value was enhanced 69.2%. This study provides new ideas for expanding the application of nanocomponents in traditional composite materials.

Abstract:Nacre is a lightweight, strong, stiff, and tough material, which makes it a mimicking object for material design. Many attempts to mimic nacre by various methods resulted in the synthesis of artificial nacre with excellent properties. However, the fabrication procedure was very laborious and time-consuming due to the sequential steps, and only limited-sized materials could be obtained. Hence, a novel design enabling scalable production of high-performance artificial nacre with uniform layered structures is urgently needed. We developed a novel wet-spinning assembly technique to rapidly manufacture continuous nacremimic graphene oxide (GO, brick)-sodium alginate (SA, mortar) films and fibers with excellent mechanical properties. At high concentrations, the GO-SA mixtures spontaneously produced liquid crystals (LCs) due to the template effect of GO, and continuous, 6 m long nacre-like GO-SA films were wet-spun from the obtained GO-SA liquid crystalline (LC) dope with a speed of up to 1.5 m/min. The assembled macroscopic GO-SA composites inherited the alignment of the GO sheets from the LC phase, and their mechanical properties were investigated by a joint experimental-computational study. The tensile tests revealed that the maximum strength (σ) and Young’s modulus (E) of the obtained films reached 239.6 MPa and 22.4 GPa, while the maximum values of σ and E for the fibers were 784.9 MPa and 58 GPa, respectively. The described wet-spinning assembly method is applicable for a large-scale and fast production of high-performance continuous artificial nacre.
Electrically conductive and mechanically strong biomimetic chitosan/reduced graphene oxide composite films

Abstract:Composite films of chitosan and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets with nacre-like layered structure have been prepared by vacuum filtration of the stable aqueous mixture of both components. The film containing 6 wt% RGO is electrically conductive with a conductivity of 1.2 S m(-1). Furthermore, it is mechanically strong and ductile; its Young's modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break were measured to be 6.3 +/- 0.2 GPa, 206 +/- 6 MPa and 6.5 +/- 0.6%, respectively. These values partly exceed those of nacre. The high mechanical and electrical properties of chitosan/RGO composite films are mainly attributed to the uniform dispersion of RGO nanofillers in the polymer matrices to form a compact layered structure.

Abstract:Combining experimental and computational studies of nanocomposite interfaces is highly needed to gain insight into their performance. However, there are very few literature reports, combining well-controlled atomic force microscopy experiments with molecular dynamic simulations, which explore the role of polymer chemistry and assembly on interface adhesion and shear strength. In this work, we investigate graphene oxide (GO)-polymer interfaces prevalent in nanocomposites based on a nacre-like architectures. We examine the interfacial strength resulting from van der Waals and hydrogen bonding interactions by comparing the out-of-plane separation and in-plane shear deformations of GO-polyethylene glycol (PEG) and GO-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The investigation reveals an overall better mechanical performance for the anhydrous GO-PVA system in both out-of-plane and in-plane deformation modes, highlighting the benefits of the donor-acceptor hydrogen bond formation present in GO-PVA. Such bond formation results in inter-chain hydrogen bond networks leading to stronger interfaces. By contrast, PEG, a hydrogen bond acceptor only, relies primarily on van der Waals inter-chain interactions, typically resulting in weaker interactions. The study also predicts that water addition increases the adhesion of GO-PEG but decreases the adhesion of GO-PVA, and slightly increases the shear strength in both systems. Furthermore, by comparing simulations and experiments, we show that the CHARMM force field has enough accuracy to capture the effect of polymer content, water distribution, and to provide quantitative guidance for achieving optimum interfacial properties. Therefore, the study demonstrates an effective methodology, in the Materials Genome spirit, toward the design of 2D materials-polymer nanocomposites system for applications demanding mechanical robustness.

Abstract:Inspired by the hierarchical structure of nacre and the robust adhesive ability of mussel threads, graphene oxide–polydopamine (GO–PDA) nanocomposites are designed and synthesized to achieve enhanced mechanical properties and to provide additional functionalities. Here we report a joint experimental/computational investigation of GO–PDA nanocomposites, proposing a probable chemical reduction mechanism of PDA to convert GO to reduced GO (rGO), which helps increase the electrical conductivity. The most stable chemical connection between PDA and GO is also proposed. Our artificial nacre-like GO–PDA nanocomposites are shown to have higher tensile strength and toughness compared to natural nacre. The pulling tests conducted by molecular dynamics simulations, which are supported by our experiments, reveal that the enhanced mechanical strength of GO–PDA nanocomposites mainly originates from the additional non-covalent interactions provided by PDA. The humidity-driven shrinking mechanism of GO–PDA nanocomposites due to non-uniform stresses on the GO–PDA sheets is also discovered in our simulations and supported by our experiments. The findings in this work can help improve and tune the properties of GO–PDA nanocomposites and might also apply to other 2D materials.
