Abstract:
Diverting acid fracturing based on temporary plugging is a promising stimulation technology especially applied to complex carbonate formation to enhance productivity. The key to the success of this technology lies in forming a temporary plugging within the previously-created acid-etched fractures and redirect the subsequent treating fluid to under-stimulated areas. However, the plugging laws of degradable diverters in acid-etched fractures are still unclear because of the special fracture morphology. Thus in this study, we reproduced an actual acid-etched fracture, scanned its surface profile, and made artificial fracture models with actual roughness by 3D printing technology. Based on the scanned data, we compared the morphological characteristics of the fracture surface before and after acid etching. Then, using the artificial fracture models and the plugging evaluation system, we conducted a series of experiments to investigate the plug formation time, diverter consumption and plugging zones characteristics with different fracture widths and diverter concentrations. Finally, based on the experimental results, the influence of acid etching on the plugging mechanism is analyzed. Experimental results show that in the 2-mm-wide acid-etched fracture, fibers play a leading role in the plugging process, particulates slightly affect the plug formation speed but do not determine whether the plugging is successful or not, the diverter consumption varies little with different particulate concentrations. While in the 4-mm-wide and 6-mm-wide acid-etched fractures, particulates play a leading role in plugging process, a small change in particulate concentration has a great impact on the plugging performance. The recommended diverter recipes for 2-mm-wide, 4-mm-wide and 6-mm-wide acid-etched fractures are 1 wt% fibers+ 1 wt% particulates, 1 wt% fibers +1.2 wt% particulates, and 1 wt% fibers +1.2 wt% particulates respectively.
