Abstract:In this article, we revisit Weibel's conjecture for twisted $K$-theory. We also examine the vanishing of twisted negative $K$-groups for Prüfer domains. Furthermore, we observe that the homotopy invariance of twisted $K$-theory holds for (finite-dimensional) Prüfer domains.

Abstract:Of the light nuclides observed in the universe today, D, 3He, 4He, and 7Li are relics from its early evolution. The primordial abundances of these relics, produced via Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) during the first half hour of the evolution of the universe provide a unique window on Physics and Cosmology at redshifts of order 10^10. Comparing the BBN-predicted abundances with those inferred from observational data tests the consistency of the standard model of cosmology over ten orders of magnitude in redshift, constrains the baryon and other particle content of the universe, and probes both Cosmology and Physics beyond their current standard models. These lectures are intended to introduce students, both of theory and observation, to those aspects of the evolution of the universe relevant to the production and evolution of the light nuclides from the Big Bang to the present. The current observational data is reviewed and compared with the BBN predictions and the implications for cosmology (e.g., universal baryon density) and particle physics (e.g., relativistic energy density) are discussed. While this comparison reveals the stunning success of the standard model(s), there are currently some challenges which leave open the door for more theoretical and observational work with potential implications for astronomy, cosmology, and particle physics.

Abstract:Equivariant $K$-theory is a generalized equivariant cohomology theory which is a hybrid of the $K$-theory of a topological space and the representation theory of the group acting on it. In this article, we review the basics of equivariant $K$-theory and focus on the localization theorem and formula due to Atiyah and Segal, which have become important tools in equivariant topology nowadays. We then discuss the application of equivariant $K$-theory to equivariant formality, and briefly mention some recent developments.

Abstract:We use equivariant methods to define and study the orbifold K-theory of an orbifold X. Adapting techniques from equivariant K-theory, we construct a Chern character and exhibit a multiplicative decomposition for K * orb (X)⊗ℚ, in particular showing that it is additively isomorphic to the orbifold cohomology of X. A number of examples are provided. We then use the theory of projective representations to define the notion of twisted orbifold K–theory in the presence of discrete torsion. An explicit expression for this is obtained in the case of a global quotient.

Abstract:We prove that certain involutions defined by Vogell and Burghelea-Fiedorowicz on the rational algebraic K K -theory of spaces coincide. This gives a way to compute the positive and negative eigenspaces of the involution on rational homotopy groups of pseudoisotopy spaces from the involution on rational S 1 S^{1} -equivariant homology groups of the free loop space of a simply-connected manifold. As an application, we give explicit dimensions of the open manifolds V V that appear in Belegradek-Farrell-Kapovitch’s work for which the spaces of complete nonnegatively curved metrics on V V have nontrivial rational homotopy groups.

Abstract:We offer here a more direct approach to twisted K-theory, based on the notion of twisted vector bundles (of finite or infinite dimension) and of twisted principal bundles. This is closeely related to the classical notion ot torsors and bundles of modules over an algebra bundle. Twisted K-theory is simply defined as the Grothendieck group of twisted vector bundles (with a given twist). The usual operations on vector bundles (exterior powers, Adams operations) are easily extended to this twisted framework. Graded twisted K-theory, which is important for the definition and proof of the Thom isomorphism in this framework, is defined with the same formalism. We also define a twisted Chern character with target "twisted cohomology". Although there are many definitions of this character in the literature, our method is more elementary and is based on the classical definitions of the Chern-Weil theory, via connections and curvatures. In this way, we get explicit formulas very much in the spirit of Steenrod's coordinate bundles.

Universal twist in Equivariant K-theory for proper and discrete actions

Abstract:We define equivariant projective unitary stable bundles as the appropriate twists when defining K-theory as sections of bundles with fibers the space of Fredholm operators over a Hilbert space. We construct universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundles for the orbit types, and we use a specific model for these local universal spaces in order to glue them to obtain a universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundle for discrete and proper actions. We determine the homotopy type of the universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundle, and we show that the isomorphism classes of equivariant projective unitary stable bundles are classified by the third equivariant integral cohomology group. The results contained in this paper extend and generalize results of Atiyah-Segal.

Abstract:In [MT2] the Vafa-Witten theory of complex projective surfaces is lifted to oriented $\mathbb C^*$-equivariant cohomology theories. Here we study the K-theoretic refinement. It gives rational functions in $t^{1/2}$ invariant under $t^{1/2}\leftrightarrow t^{-1/2}$ which specialise to numerical Vafa-Witten invariants at $t=1$. On the "instanton branch" the invariants give the virtual $\chi_{-t}^{}$-genus refinement of Göttsche-Kool. Applying modularity to their calculations gives predictions for the contribution of the "monopole branch". We calculate some cases and find perfect agreement. We also do calculations on K3 surfaces, finding Jacobi forms refining the usual modular forms, proving a conjecture of Göttsche-Kool. We determine the K-theoretic virtual classes of degeneracy loci using Eagon-Northcott complexes, and show they calculate refined Vafa-Witten invariants. Using this Laarakker [Laa] proves universality results for the invariants.

Equivariant Vector Bundles on T-Varieties

Abstract:Let X be a T-variety, where T is an algebraic torus. We describe a fully faithful functor from the category of T-equivariant vector bundles on X to a certain category of filtered vector bundles on a suitable quotient of X by T. We show that if X is factorial, this functor gives an equivalence of categories. This generalizes Klyachko's description of equivariant vector bundles on toric varieties. We apply our machinery to show that vector bundles of low rank on projective space which are equivariant with respect to special subtori of the maximal torus must split, generalizing a theorem of Kaneyama. Further applications include descriptions of global vector fields on T-varieties, and a study of equivariant deformations of equivariant vector bundles.

Quantum $K$-invariants via Quot schemes II

Abstract:We derive a $K$-theoretic analogue of the Vafa--Intriligator formula, computing the (virtual) Euler characteristics of vector bundles over the Quot scheme that compactifies the space of degree $d$ morphisms from a fixed projective curve to the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(r,N)$. As an application, we deduce interesting vanishing results, used in Part I (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2406.12191" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.12191">arXiv:2406.12191</a>) to study the quantum $K$-ring of $\mathrm{Gr}(r,N)$. In the genus-zero case, we prove a simplified formula involving Schur functions, consistent with the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem in the degree-zero setting. These new formulas offer a novel approach for computing the structure constants of quantum $K$-products.

A generalization of K-theory to operator systems

Abstract:We propose a generalization of K-theory to operator systems. Motivated by spectral truncations of noncommutative spaces described by $C^*$-algebras and inspired by the realization of the K-theory of a $C^*$-algebra as the Witt group of hermitian forms, we introduce new operator system invariants indexed by the corresponding matrix size. A direct system is constructed whose direct limit possesses a semigroup structure, and we define the $K_0$-group as the corresponding Grothendieck group. This is an invariant of unital operator systems, and, more generally, an invariant up to Morita equivalence of operator systems. For $C^*$-algebras it reduces to the usual definition. We illustrate our invariant by means of the spectral localizer.

Abstract:We provide a geometric model for the classifying space of automorphism groups of Hermitian vector bundles over a ring with involution $R$ such that $\frac{1}{2} \in R$; this generalizes a result of Schlichting-Tripathi \cite{SchTri}. We then prove a periodicity theorem for Hermitian $K$-theory and use it to construct an $E_\infty$ motivic ring spectrum $\mathbf{KR}^{\mathrm{alg}}$ representing homotopy Hermitian $K$-theory. From these results, we show that $\mathbf{KR}^{\mathrm{alg}}$ is stable under base change, and cdh descent for homotopy Hermitian $K$-theory of rings with involution is a formal consequence.

Abstract:We give a construction for twisted equivariant K-theory in the case of a proper action of a discrete group using twisted bundles. Our construction uses results of Lueck and Oliver to extend a construction of Adem and Ruan. We also show the existence of a Chern character to twisted Bredon cohomology. This gives a partial answer to the question of when you can construct twisted equivariant K-theory out of finite rank twisted bundles.

Abstract:We introduce bivariant K-theory for nonarchimedean bornological algebras over a complete discrete valuation ring $V$. This is the universal target for dagger homotopy invariant, matricially stable and excisive functors, similar to bivariant K-theory for locally convex topological $\mathbb{C}$-algebras and algebraic bivariant K-theory. When the first variable is the ground algebra $V$, we get a version of Weibel's homotopy algebraic K-theory, which we call \textit{stabilised overconvergent analytic K-theory}. The resulting analytic K-theory satisfies dagger homotopy invariance, stability by completed matrix algebras, and excision.

Abstract:On (4n + 1)-dimensional (noncompact) manifolds admitting proper cocompact Lie group actions, we explore the analytic and topological sides of Kervaire semi-characteristics. The analytic side puts together two interpretations, one via assembly maps, and the other via dimensions of kernels. The topological side is ensured by the proper cocompact version of the Hodge theorem. The two sides coincide and admit an Atiyah type vanishing theorem.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of Morita equivalence for non-selfadjoint operator algebras equipped with a completely isometric involution (operator -algebras). We then show that the unbounded Kasparov product by a Morita equivalence bimodule induces an isomorphism between equivalence classes of twisted spectral triples over Morita equivalent operator -algebras. This leads to a tentative definition of unbounded bivariant K -theory and we prove that this bivariant theory is related to Kasparov's bivariant K -theory via the Baaj-Julg bounded transform. Moreover, the unbounded Kasparov product provides a refinement of the usual interior Kasparov product. We illustrate our results by proving -versions of well-known -algebraic Morita equivalences in the context of hereditary subalgebras, conformal equivalences and crossed products by discrete groups.

Abstract:This is a study of twisted K-theory on a product space $T \times M$. The twisting comes from a decomposable cup product class which applies the 1-cohomology of $T$ and the 2-cohomology of $M$. In the case of a topological product, we give a concrete realization for the gerbe associated to a cup product characteristic class and use this to realize twisted $K^1$-theory elements in terms of supercharge sections in a Fredholm bundle. The nontriviality of this construction is proved. Equivariant twisted K-theory and gerbes are studied in the product case as well. This part applies Lie groupoid theory. Superconnection formalism is used to provide a construction for characteristic polynomials which are used to extract information from the twisted K-theory classes.

Abstract:We use a determinant functor to describe a map from Grothendieck group to local cohomology. This map is closely related with negative K-groups and generalizes a method of Green and Griffiths. Moreover, we obtain a natural transformation from the local Hilbert functor to the first K-theoretic cycle groups, which are variants of Balmer's tensor triangular Chow groups.
