Abstract:We study relative algebraic K-theory of admissible Zariski-Riemann spaces and prove that it is equivalent to G-theory and satisfies homotopy invariance. Moreover, we provide an example of a non-noetherian abelian category whose negative K-theory vanishes.

Abstract:The present work is the author's doctoral thesis, written during his studies at the University of Bonn. Its goal is to establish the foundations of $K$-theory in the context of adic geometry using the formalism of condensed mathematics and Efimov's results on localizing invariants of dualizable categories. In particular, we study the descent properties of our version of $K$-theory and prove that it satisfies Nisnevich descent on analytic adic spaces. Furthermore, we show that $K$-theory forms a sheaf with respect to the étale topology after chromatic localization. Finally, we use this result to prove an analog of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for analytic adic spaces.

Abstract:We establish connections between the concepts of Noetherian, regular coherent, and regular n-coherent categories for Z-linear categories with finitely many objects and the corresponding notions for unital rings. These connections enable us to obtain a negative K-theory vanishing result, a fundamental theorem, and a homotopy invariance result for the K-theory of Z-linear categories.

Abstract:We show that the algebraic K-theory of semi-valuation rings with stably coherent regular semi-fraction ring satisfies homotopy invariance. Moreover, we show that these rings are regular if their valuation is non-trivial. Thus they yield examples of regular rings which are not homotopy invariant for algebraic K-theory. On the other hand, they are not necessarily coherent, so that they provide a class of possibly non-coherent examples for homotopy invariance of algebraic K-theory. As an application, we show that Temkin's relative Riemann-Zariski spaces also satisfy homotopy invariance for K-theory under some finiteness assumption.

Real K-theory for Waldhausen infinity categories with genuine duality

Abstract:We develop a new framework to study real $K$-theory in the context of $\infty$-categories. For this, we introduce Waldhausen $\infty$-categories with genuine duality, which will be the input for such $K$-theory. These are Waldhausen $\infty$-categories in the sense of Barwick equipped with a compatible duality and a refinement of their (lax) hermitian objects generalizing the concept of Poincaré $\infty$-categories of Lurie. They may also be thought of as a version of complete Segal spaces enriched in genuine $C_2$-spaces whose underlying $\infty$-category carries a compatible Waldhausen structure, since we show that their respective $\infty$-categories are equivalent. We define the real $K$-theory genuine $C_2$-spaces by means of an enriched version of the $S_\bullet$-construction, defined for Waldhausen $\infty$-categories with genuine duality. Moreover, we prove an Additivity Theorem for this $S_\bullet$-construction which leads to an Additivity Theorem for real $K$-theory. Furthermore, such real $K$-theory satisfy a universal property -- analogous to that proved by Barwick for algebraic $K$-theory of Waldhausen $\infty$-categories --: We prove that every theory can be universally turned into an additive theory and identify our real K-theory with the universal additive theory associated to the functor that associates to a Waldhausen $\infty$-category with genuine duality its maximal subspace. Finally, we promote the real $K$-theory genuine $C_2$-spaces to genuine $C_2$-spectra.

Abstract:Motivated by the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for group rings, we formulate the $\mathcal{C}$op-Farrell-Jones Conjecture for the K-theory of Hecke algebras of td-groups. We prove this conjecture for (closed subgroups of) reductive p-adic groups G. In particular, the projective class group $K_0(\mathcal{H}(G))$ for a (closed subgroup) of a reductive p-adic group G can be computed as a colimit of projective class groups $K_0(\mathcal{H}(U))$ where U varies over the compact open subgroups of G. This implies that all finitely generated smooth complex representations of a reductive p-adic G admit finite projective resolutions by compactly induced representations. For SL$_n(F)$ we translate the colimit formula for $K_0(\mathcal{H}(G))$ to a more concrete cokernel description in terms of stabilizers for the action on the Bruhat-Tits building. For negative K-theory we obtain vanishing results, while we identify the higher K-groups $K_n(\mathcal{H}(G))$ with the value of G-homology theory on the extended Bruhat-Tits building. Our considerations apply to general Hecke algebras of the form $\mathcal{H}(G;R,\rho,\omega)$, where we allow a central character $\omega$ and a twist by an action $\rho$ of G on R. For the $\mathcal{C}$op-Farrell-Jones Conjecture we need to assume $\mathbb{Q} \subseteq R$ and a regularity assumption. As a key intermediate step we introduce the $\mathcal{C}vcy-Farrell-Jones conjecture. For the latter no regularity assumptions on R are needed.

Abstract:We extend the notion of regular coherence from rings to additive categories and show that well-known consequences of regular coherence for rings also apply to additive categories. For instance, the negative K-groups and all twisted Nil-groups vanish for an additive category, if it is regular coherent. This will be applied to nested sequences of additive categories, motivated by our ongoing project to determine the algebraic K-theory of the Hecke algebra of a reductive p-adic group.

Abstract:Given a finite category T, we consider the functor category [T,A], where A can in particular be any quasi-abelian category. Examples of quasi-abelian categories are given by any abelian category but also by non-exact additive categories as the categories of torsion(-free) abelian groups, topological abelian groups, locally compact abelian groups, Banach spaces and Fréchet spaces. In this situation, the categories of various internal categorical structures in A, such as the categories of internal n-fold groupoids, are equivalent to functor categories [T,A] for a suitable category T. For a replete full subcategory S of T, we define F to be the full subcategory of [T,A] whose objects are given by the functors G with G(X)=0 for all objects X not in S. We prove that F is a torsion-free Birkhoff subcategory of [T,A]. This allows us to study (higher) central extensions from categorical Galois theory in [T,A] with respect to F and generalized Hopf formulae for homology.

In this paper, we study the relative Baum-Connes assembly map for any pair of groups and apply it to solve the relative Novikov conjecture when the groups satisfy certain geometric conditions.

Abstract:This survey article on relative homological algebra in bivariant K-thoery is mainly intended for readers with a background knowledge in triangulated categories. We briefly recall the general theory of relative homological algebra in triangulated categories and latter specialize it to the non-equivariant and the equivariant bivariant K-thoery, where the actions on C*-algebras is by a finite cyclic group. We conclude by the explicit computation of the universal abelian invariant for separable C*-algebras with the action of $\mathbb{Z}/4$ by automorphisms.

Abstract:Using the formalism of Grothendieck's derivators, we construct `the universal localizing invariant of dg categories'. By this, we mean a morphism U_l from the pointed derivator associated with the Morita homotopy theory of dg categories to a triangulated strong derivator M^loc such that U_l commutes with filtered homotopy colimits, preserves the point, sends each exact sequence of dg categories to a triangle and is universal for these properties. Similary, we construct the `the universal additive invariant of dg categories', i.e. the universal morphism of derivators U_a to a strong triangulated derivator M^add which satisfies the first two properties but the third one only for split exact sequences. We prove that Waldhausen K-theory appears as a mapping space in the target of the universal additive invariant. This is the first conceptual characterization of Quillen-Waldhausen's K-theory since its definition in the early 70's. As an application we obtain for free the higher Chern characters from K-theory to cyclic homology.

Abstract:We prove basic statements about the Hermitian K-theory of exact form categories with weak equivalences. Notably, we extend a quadratic functor with values in abelian groups from an exact category to its category of bounded chain complexes in a way that does not change Grothendieck-Witt spaces. This is used in joint work with Marlowe for the comparison of the classical 1-categorical version of the Hermitian K-theory of exact categories with the infinity-categorical version of Calmes-Dotto-Harpaz-Hebestreit-Land-Moi-Nardin-Nikolaus-Steimle.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new formalism for $K$-theory, called squares $K$-theory. This formalism allows us to simultaneously generalize the usual three-term relation $[B] = [A] + [C]$ for an exact sequence $A \hookrightarrow B \twoheadrightarrow C$ or for a subtractive sequence $A\hookrightarrow B \leftarrow C$, by defining $K_0$ of exact and subtractive categories to satisfy a four-term relation $[A]+[D]= [C] + [B]$ for a ``good'' square diagram with these corners. Examples that rely on this formalism are $K$-theory of smooth manifolds of a fixed dimension and $K$-theory of (smooth and) complete varieties. Another application we give of this theory is the construction of a derived motivic measure taking value in the $K$-theory of homotopy sheaves.

Abstract:We compute the algebraic K-theory modulo p and v_1 of the S-algebra ell/p = k(1), using topological cyclic homology. We use this to compute the homotopy cofiber of a transfer map K(L/p) --> K(L_p), which we interpret as the algebraic K-theory of the "fraction field" of the p-complete Adams summand of topological K-theory. The results suggest that there is an arithmetic duality theorem for this fraction field, much like Tate--Poitou duality for p-adic fields.

Abstract:We study the algebraic $K$-theory of the ring of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space with values in a local division ring, e.g., a local field: We compute its negative $K$-theory and show its $K$-regularity. The complex case reproves the results of Rosenberg, Friedlander--Walker, and Cortiñas--Thom. Our consideration in the real case proves two previously unconfirmed claims made by Rosenberg in 1990. The algebraic nature of our methods enables us to deal with the nonarchimedean and noncommutative cases analogously.

Abstract:Given C$^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$ and a $^*$-homomorphism $\phi:A\rightarrow B$, we adopt the portrait of the relative $K$-theory $K_*(\phi)$ due to Karoubi using Banach categories and Banach functors. We show that the elements of the relative groups may be represented in a simple form. We prove the existence of two six-term exact sequences, and we use these sequences to deduce the fact that the relative theory is isomorphic, in a natural way, to the $K$-theory of the mapping cone.

Abstract:We analyze topological invariants, in particular Z2 invariants, which characterize time reversal invariant topological insulators, in the framework of index theory and K-theory. After giving a careful study of the underlying geometry and K-theory, we formalize topological invariants as elements of KR theory. To be precise, the strong topological invariants lie in the higher KR groups of spheres; KR̃−j−1(SD+1,d). Here j is a KR-cycle index, as well as an index counting off the Altland-Zirnbauer classification of Time Reversal Symmetry (TRS) and Particle Hole Symmetry (PHS)—as we show. In this setting, the computation of the invariants can be seen as the evaluation of the natural pairing between KR-cycles and KR-classes. This fits with topological and analytical index computations as well as with Poincaré Duality and the Baum–Connes isomorphism for free Abelian groups. We provide an introduction starting from the basic objects of real, complex and quaternionic structures which are the mathematical objects corresponding to TRS and PHS. We furthermore detail the relevant bundles and K-theories (Real and Quaternionic) that lead to the classification as well as the topological setting for the base spaces.

Towards the $p$-adic Hodge theory for non-commutative algebraic varieties

Abstract:We construct a K-theory version of Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze's Breuil-Kisin cohomology theory for $\sO_K$-linear idempotent-complete, small smooth proper stable infinity-categories, where $K$ is a discretely valued extension of $\Q_p$ with perfect residue field. As a corollary, under the assumption that $K(1)$-local K theory satisfies the Künneth formula for $\sO_K$-linear idempotent-complete, small smooth proper stable $\infty$-categories, we prove a comparison theorem between $K(1)$-local K theory of the generic fiber and topological cyclic periodic homology theory of the special fiber with $\Bcry$-coefficients, and $p$-adic Galois representations of $K(1)$-local K theory for $\sO_K$-linear idempotent-complete, small smooth proper stable $\infty$-categories are semi-stable. Abstract:Bivariant (equivariant) K-theory is the standard setting for non-commutative topology. We may carry over various techniques from homotopy theory and homological algebra to this setting. Here we do this for some basic notions from homological algebra: phantom maps, exact chain complexes, projective resolutions, and derived functors. We introduce these notions and apply them to examples from bivariant K-theory. An important observation of Beligiannis is that we can approximate our category by an Abelian category in a canonical way, such that our homological concepts reduce to the corresponding ones in this Abelian category. We compute this Abelian approximation in several interesting examples, where it turns out to be very concrete and tractable. The derived functors comprise the second tableau of a spectral sequence that, in favourable cases, converges towards Kasparov groups and other interesting objects. This mechanism is the common basis for many different spectral sequences. Here we only discuss the very simple 1-dimensional case, where the spectral sequences reduce to short exact sequences.

Abstract:We discuss the relative K-theory for a $C^{*}$-algebra, $A$, together with a $C^{*}$-subalgebra, $A' \subseteq A$. The relative group is denoted $K_{i}(A';A), i = 0, 1$, and is due to Karoubi. We present a situation of two pairs $A' \subseteq A$ and $B' \subseteq B$ are related so that there is a natural isomorphism between their respective relative K-theories. We also discuss applications to the case where $A$ and $B$ are $C^{*}$-algebras of a pair of locally compact, Hausdorff topological groupoids, with Haar systems.
