Abstract:As to the status of water shortage and severe water pollution,developing an effec-tive strategy to ensure the water security is one of the urgent issues. Membrane-based water treatment is highly focused and studied to ensure the water security due to its high efficiency and easy-to-operate. In this paper,the connotation and status of water security in China were presented,and a detailed review was drawn on the application of membrane technologies to de-velop water resources and reduce wastewater emission. Finally,several suggestions were listed for the development of membrane-based water treatment in water security.

Abstract:Membrane technology is widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies for wastewater treatment and reclamation in the 21st century. However, membrane fouling significantly limits its applicability and productivity. In recent decades, research on the membrane fouling has been one of the hottest spots in the field of membrane technology. In particular, recent advances in thermodynamics have substantially widened people's perspectives on the intrinsic mechanisms of membrane fouling. Formulation of fouling mitigation strategies and fabrication of anti-fouling membranes have both benefited substantially from those studies. In the present review, a summary of the recent results on the thermodynamic mechanisms associated with the critical adhesion and filtration processes during membrane fouling is provided. Firstly, the importance of thermodynamics in membrane fouling is comprehensively assessed. Secondly, the quantitative methods and general factors involved in thermodynamic fouling mechanisms are critically reviewed. Based on the aforementioned information, a brief discussion is presented on the potential applications of thermodynamic fouling mechanisms for membrane fouling control. Finally, prospects for further research on thermodynamic mechanisms underlying membrane fouling are presented. Overall, the present review offers comprehensive and in-depth information on the thermodynamic mechanisms associated with complex fouling behaviors, which will further facilitate research and development in membrane technology.

Abstract:Membrane-based water treatment processes have been established as a powerful approach for clean water production. However, despite the significant advances made in terms of rejection and flux, provision of sustainable and energy-efficient water production is restricted by the inevitable issue of membrane fouling, known to be the major contributor to the elevated operating costs due to frequent chemical cleaning, increased transmembrane resistance, and deterioration of permeate flux. This review provides an overview of fouling control strategies in different membrane processes, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane bioreactors, and desalination via reverse osmosis and forward osmosis. Insights into the recent advancements are discussed and efforts made in terms of membrane development, modules arrangement, process optimization, feed pretreatment, and fouling monitoring are highlighted to evaluate their overall impact in energy- and cost-effective water treatment. Major findings in four key aspects are presented, including membrane surface modification, modules design, process integration, and fouling monitoring. Among the above mentioned anti-fouling strategies, a large part of research has been focused on membrane surface modifications using a number of anti-fouling materials whereas much less research has been devoted to membrane module advancements and in-situ fouling monitoring and control. At the end, a critical analysis is provided for each anti-fouling strategy and a rationale framework is provided for design of efficient membranes and process for water treatment.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry was treated for utilization by microfiltration(MF) and electrodialysis(ED). The results showed that microfiltration was suitable for pre-treatment, while the electrodialysis was suitable for salts,organics and COD removal. The final conductivity of the product water after ED was as low as 260μS/cm and the ultimate COD value was about 20mg/L.The quality of product water was close to municipal tap water and very suitable for reuse as industrial cycle cooling water.

Abstract:One of the greatest challenges to the sustainability of modern society is an inadequate supply of clean water. Due to its energy-saving and cost-effective features, membrane technology has become an indispensable platform technology for water purification, including seawater and brackish water desalination as well as municipal or industrial wastewater treatment. However, membrane fouling, which arises from the nonspecific interaction between membrane surface and foulants, significantly impedes the efficient application of membrane technology. Preparing antifouling membranes is a fundamental strategy to deal with pervasive fouling problems from a variety of foulants. In recent years, major advancements have been made in membrane preparation techniques and in elucidating the antifouling mechanisms of membrane processes, including ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and forward osmosis. This review will first introduce the major foulants and the principal mechanisms of membrane fouling, and then highlight the development, current status and future prospects of antifouling membranes, including antifouling strategies, preparation techniques and practical applications. In particular, the strategies and mechanisms for antifouling membranes, including passive fouling resistance and fouling release, active off-surface and on-surface strategies, will be proposed and discussed extensively.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis and microfiltration are two membrane-based separation techniques that have gained popularity over the past few decades. A fundamental barrier to improving the overall efficiency of membrane separation is membrane fouling. The accumulation of foulants causes a reduction in permeate flux, a loss of selectivity and permeability, and a reduction in the membrane's lifespan. Numerous chemical and physical surface changes have been studied to enhance membrane antifouling properties. Additionally, research has concentrated on creating membranes that use cutting-edge materials to improve their antifouling capability. This paper focuses on a wide-ranging and thorough analyses of the different types of fouling during wastewater treatment based on current research results regarding fouling control strategy and the potential of new methods for wastewater treatment. It is a further step forward for the evaluation of mitigation measures for emerging membrane fouling problems.

Abstract:Membrane distillation (MD) is an emerging thermally-driven technology that poses a lot of promise in desalination, and water and wastewater treatment. Developments in membrane design and the use of alternative energy sources have provided much improvement in the viability of MD for different applications. However, fouling of membranes is still one of the major issues that hounds the long-term stability performance of MD. Membrane fouling is the accumulation of unwanted materials on the surface or inside the pores of a membrane that results to a detrimental effect on the overall performance of MD. If not addressed appropriately, it could lead to membrane damage, early membrane replacement or even shutdown of operation. Similar with other membrane separation processes, fouling of MD is still an unresolved problem. Due to differences in membrane structure and design, and operational conditions, the fouling formation mechanism in MD may be different from those of pressure-driven membrane processes. In order to properly address the problem of fouling, there is a need to understand the fouling formation and mechanism happening specifically for MD. This review details the different foulants and fouling mechanisms in the MD process, their possible mitigation and control techniques, and characterization strategies that can be of help in understanding and minimizing the fouling problem.

Abstract:This study investigated membrane fouling issues associated with the operation of a submerged ultrafiltration membrane in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and optimized the associated chemical cleaning strategies. By analyzing the surface components of the membrane foulant and the compositions of the membrane cleaning solution, the primary causes of membrane fouling were identified. Membrane fouling control strategies suitable for the DWTP were evaluated through chemical cleaning tests conducted for bench-scale, full-scale, and engineering cases. The results show that the membrane foulants were primarily composed of a mixture of inorganics and organics; the inorganics were mainly composed of Al and Si, while the organics were primarily humic acid (HA). Sodium citrate proved to be the most effective cleaning agent for inorganic fouling, which was mainly composed of Al, whereas sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) combined with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) showed the best removal efficiency for organic fouling, which predominantly consisted of HA and Si. However, sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) combined with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) showed the best removal efficiency for organic fouling and Si; organic fouling predominantly consisted of HA. Based on the bench-scale test results, flux recovery was verified in the full-scale system. Under a constant pressure of 30 kPa, the combined acid–alkali cleaning achieved the best flux recovery, restoring the flux from 22.8 L/(m2·h) to 66.75 L/(m2·h). In the engineering tests, combined acid–alkali cleaning yielded results consistent with those of the full-scale tests. In the practical engineering cleaning process, adopting a cleaning strategy of alkaline (NaClO + NaOH) cleaning followed by acidic (sodium citrate) cleaning can effectively solve the membrane fouling problem.

Abstract:<p>Membrane technology provides a reliable and powerful solution to combat the global water crisis by producing fresh water through sustainable desalination. However, the decline in system performance due to membrane biofouling is a limitation and significant efforts have been made to explore fouling control mechanisms and develop simple methods to inhibit or eliminate membrane fouling. Nanotechnology has increased the number of options for the development of antibiofouling membranes by incorporating nanoparticles within the polyamide layer to produce a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) structure. This review presents recent advances in the preparation of antifouling TFN membranes and incorporation of different nanoparticles into the design. The review also discusses the strategies and mechanisms for reducing membrane fouling and proposes a future outlook for the field.</p>

However,the membrane fouling in ultrafiltration is a great obstacle problem which restricts its widespread popularization and application in actual projects. Abstract:Currently, nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are the most widely employed in surface water treatment, but membrane fouling has always been an important problem in the process of its application and scientific community paid wide attentions to this issue. This paper aims at reviewing the recent reports about fouling mitigation of NF/RO membranes, mainly focusing on the feed water pretreatment and membrane modification. In generally, high-quality feed water can ensure long-term stability of the membrane systems through altering size distribution of foulant, reducing its affinity to membrane surface and removing microbial nutrient source. Membrane modification can also effectively enhance anti-fouling capacity of NF/RO membranes by tailoring surface hydrophilicity, roughness, zeta potential, and functional groups so as to reduce the interaction between membrane surface and foulants. Besides, in order to recover the membrane flux of NF/RO systems, chemical cleaning is inevitable. The interaction mechanisms between chemical agent and foulant cake layer on the membrane surface and existing problems in chemical cleaning progress are also summarized. At last, the future research direction in this field is identified.

Abstract:Oily wastewater is an extensive source of pollution to soil and water, and its harmless treatment is of great importance for the protection of our aquatic ecosystems. Membrane filtration is highly desirable for removing oil from oily water because it has the advantages of energy efficiency, easy processing and low maintenance cost. However, membrane fouling during filtration leads to severe flux decline and impedes long-term operation of membranes in practical wastewater treatment. Membrane fouling includes reversible fouling and irreversible fouling. The fouling mechanisms have been explored based on classical fouling models, and on oil droplet behaviors (such as droplet deposition, accumulation, coalescence and wetting) on the membranes. Membrane fouling is dominated by droplet-membrane interaction, which is influenced by the properties of the membrane (e.g., surface chemistry, structure and charge) and the wastewater (e.g., compositions and concentrations) as well as the operation conditions. Typical membrane antifouling strategies, such as surface hydrophilization, zwitterionic polymer coating, photocatalytic decomposition and electrically enhanced antifouling are reviewed, and their cons and pros for practical applications are discussed.
