Abstract:Nanostructured ion exchange membranes exhibit an intricate network of aqueous pores that facilitate ion and water transport, which maybe useful in water purification and energy storage applications. In this study, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to investigate randomly sulfonated polystyrene-polymethylbutylene (PS-PMB) block copolymer membranes. We find that ion distribution within the pores is far from uniform and ions are prone to clustering. Both counterions and co-ions concentrate near the negatively charged pore wall, and their diffusive motion is correlated. To quantify the salt partition coefficient for these membranes, we utilize two approaches: (1) conventional "morphing" simulations, which calculate the free energy to transfer ions from bulk solution into the membrane, and (2) a novel technique to predict the equilibrium solution salinity from ion concentration profiles in the membrane. The two methods are consistent; both predict a partition coefficient exceeding that of the Donnan model, which assumes a uniform ion distribution within the membrane. We find that well-hydrated membranes with larger pores tend to preferentially absorb salt; to remedy this, cross-linking would be necessary to limit water uptake.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are useful synthetic materials that are built by the programmed assembly of metal nodes and organic linkers 1 . The success of MOFs results from the isoreticular principle 2 , which allows families of structurally analogous frameworks to be built in a predictable way. This relies on directional coordinate covalent bonding to define the framework geometry. However, isoreticular strategies do not translate to other common crystalline solids, such as organic salts 3,4,5 , in which the intermolecular ionic bonding is less directional. Here we show that chemical knowledge can be combined with computational crystal-structure prediction 6 (CSP) to design porous organic ammonium halide salts that contain no metals. The nodes in these salt frameworks are tightly packed ionic clusters that direct the materials to crystallize in specific ways, as demonstrated by the presence of well-defined spikes of low-energy, low-density isoreticular structures on the predicted lattice energy landscapes 7,8 . These energy landscapes allow us to select combinations of cations and anions that will form thermodynamically stable, porous salt frameworks with channel sizes, functionalities and geometries that can be predicted a priori. Some of these porous salts adsorb molecular guests such as iodine in quantities that exceed those of most MOFs, and this could be useful for applications such as radio-iodine capture 9,10,11,12 . More generally, the synthesis of these salts is scalable, involving simple acid–base neutralization, and the strategy makes it possible to create a family of non-metal organic frameworks that combine high ionic charge density with permanent porosity.

Abstract:We combine molecular dynamics simulations with experiments to estimate solubilities of an organic salt in complex growth environments. We predict the solubility by simulations of the growth and dissolution of ions at the crystal surface kink sites at different solution concentrations. Thereby, the solubility is identified as the solution's salt concentration, where the energy of the ion pair dissolved in solution equals the energy of the ion pair crystallized at the kink sites. The simulation methodology is demonstrated for the case of anhydrous sodium acetate crystallized from various solvent-antisolvent mixtures. To validate the predicted solubilities, we have measured the solubilities of sodium acetate in-house, using an experimental setup and measurement protocol that guarantees moisture-free conditions, which is key for a hygroscopic compound like sodium acetate. We observe excellent agreement between the experimental and the computationally evaluated solubilities for sodium acetate in different solvent-antisolvent mixtures. Given the agreement and the rich data the simulations produce, we can use them to complement experimental tasks, which in turn will reduce time and capital in the design of complicated industrial crystallization processes of organic salts.

Abstract:Water scarcity is a reality in our world, and scenarios predicted by leading scientists in this area indicate that it will worsen in the next decades. However, new technologies based in low-cost seawater desalination can prevent the worst scenarios, providing fresh water for humanity. With this goal, membranes based in nanoporous materials have been suggested in recent years. One of the materials suggested is MoS$_2$, and classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation is one of the most powerful tools to explore these nanomaterials. However, distinct Force Fields employed in MD simulations are parameterized based on distinct experimental quantities. In this paper, we compare two models of salt that were build based on distinct properties of water-salt mixtures. One model fits the hydration free energy and lattice properties, the second fits the crystal density and the density and the dielectric constant of water and salt mixtures. To compare the models, MD simulations for salty water flow through two nanopores sizes were used -- one pore big enough to accommodate hydrated ions, and one smaller in which the ion has to dehydrate to enter, and two rigid water models from the TIP4P family -- the TIP4P/2005 and TIP4P/$\epsilon$. Our results indicate that the water permeability and salt rejection by the membrane are more influenced by the salt model than by the water model, especially for the narrow pore. In fact, completely distinct mechanisms were observed, and they are related to the characteristics employed in the ion model parameterization. The results show that not only the water model can influence the outcomes, but the ion model plays a crucial role.

Abstract:This study explores the explicit modeling of polyoxometalate (POM) counter-cations in both solid states and solutions, focusing on their potential for integration into molecular electronics, specifically as components of single-molecule electronic devices. Employing Density Functional Theory (DFT) and the Conductor-like Screening Model (COSMO), our research addresses the challenge of accurately representing the environmental effects on POMs, particularly the influence of counter-cations and solvent molecules. A critical finding of this work is the demonstration that traditional models, like COSMO, often fail to capture the physical distancing effects of solvents, leading to an overestimation of the proximity of counter-cations to POM anions and resulting in over-stabilized frontier orbital energies. By implementing geometry constraints on lithium cations, we achieve a more realistic depiction of POM-cation interactions in solution, enhancing model accuracy. Additionally, our results suggest that explicit counter-cation inclusion is essential for accurate simulations pertinent to POM applications in electronic devices, though it can be computationally intensive in solution environments. This study not only advances the theoretical understanding of POMs but also underscores the need for improved computational strategies to simulate real-world conditions effectively, thereby guiding the development of POM-based electronic components

Abstract:<p>Porous organic molecular materials are a subclass of porous solids that are defined by their modular, molecular structures, and the absence of extended covalent or coordination bonding in the solid‐state. As a result, porous molecular materials are soluble and they can be processed into different forms, such as mixed matrix membranes. The structure of the porous modules can be fine‐tuned for specific applications, such as gas isotope separations, and in some cases the solid‐state properties of these materials can be defined by the structure of the porous molecule as viewed in isolation. In this review, the authors focus on the design of porous organic molecular materials and how their properties can be tuned for specific applications by using crystal engineering techniques. The authors distinguish between strategies where porosity is defined largely by the molecule itself, for example, in porous organic cages, and cases where porosity is generated by the solid‐state crystalline assembly. They emphasize the importance of computational techniques in the de novo design of functional, porous organic molecular materials, and how molecular modeling is applied to understand the properties of these materials.</p>

Machine learning assisted prediction of organic salt structure properties

Abstract:We demonstrate a machine learning-based approach which predicts the properties of crystal structures following relaxation based on the unrelaxed structure. Use of crystal graph singular values reduces the number of features required to describe a crystal by more than an order of magnitude compared to the full crystal graph representation. We construct machine learning models using the crystal graph singular value representations in order to predict the volume, enthalpy per atom, and metal versus semiconducting phase of DFT-relaxed organic salt crystals based on randomly generated unrelaxed crystal structures. Initial base models are trained to relate 89,949 randomly generated structures of salts formed by varying ratios of 1,3,5-triazine and HCl with the corresponding volumes, enthalpies per atom, and phase of the DFT-relaxed structures. We further demonstrate that the base model is able to extrapolate to new chemical systems with the inclusion of 2,000 to 10,000 crystal structures from the new system. After training a single model with a large number of data points, extension can be done at significantly lower cost. The constructed machine learning models can be used to rapidly screen large sets of randomly generated organic salt crystal structures and efficiently downselect the structures most likely to be experimentally realizable. The models can be used either as a stand-alone crystal structure predictor or incorporated into more sophisticated workflows as a filtering step.

Abstract:Knowing the local structure of metal ions in molten salt melts is essential for understanding the chemistry related to corrosion and solvation processes for various applications such as molten salt reactors, solar thermal power systems, and molten salt-enabled materials processing. However, modeling the dynamic local structure of metals in salt melts is difficult because classical mechanics does not reproduce the correct local atomic networking. The computational cost of carrying out multiple first-principles dynamics calculations to ensure that the compositional space is well sampled can be prohibitively large. In order to address this issue, the current study explores the use of the evolutionary algorithm Universal Structure Predictor: Evolutionary Xtallography (USPEX) to predict coordination numbers of strontium and zirconium in binary and ternary chloride and fluoride melts. Temperature-dependent coordination number distributions for the metal atoms were computed using a Boltzmann distribution. The calculated average coordination numbers were found to be consistent with observations from extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments and the expected temperature trends. Furthermore, the most stable predicted crystal structures compare well with EXAFS values, validating our approach for predicting local structures in salt melts.

Abstract:Two-dimensional honeycomb molecular networks confine a substrate's surface electrons within their pores, providing an ideal playground to investigate the quantum electron scattering phenomena. Besides surface state confinement, laterally protruding organic states can collectively hybridize at the smallest pores into superatom molecular orbitals. Although both types of pore states could be simultaneously hosted within nanocavities, their coexistence and possible interaction are unexplored. Here, we show that these two types of pore states do coexist within the smallest nanocavities of a two-dimensional halogen-bonding multiporous network grown on Ag(111) studied using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and electron plane wave expansion simulations. We find that superatom molecular orbitals undergo an important stabilization when hybridizing with the confined surface state, following the significant lowering of its free-standing energy. These findings provide further control over the surface electronic structure exerted by two-dimensional nanoporous systems.
Crystallization of sodium sulfate in two-dimensional interconnected pore system: Insights into localized, transient, and anisotropic stress generation and material deterioration

Abstract:Crystallization-induced stress within confined spaces of porous materials presents significant challenges across various disciplines, including conservation science, geomorphology, geotechnical engineering, and concrete durability. Despite its significance, understanding how localized, transient, and anisotropic stress is generated in pores due to salt crystallization, along with its mechanisms of damage, has remained elusive due to the lack of direct observation and quantitative measurement in porous media. This study introduces an innovative approach using a lab-on-a-chip (LOC) with a two-dimensional interconnected pore system, providing a customized porous domain that mimics real-world porous structures. It enables real-time spatially resolved observations of drying pattern evolution and sodium sulfate crystallization under repeated drying-wetting cycles. This LOC system allows us to explore the effect of efflorescence on drying and salt crystallization, quantitatively demonstrating that efflorescence influences the drying rate, particularly in hydrophilic porous media, which in turn affects salt growth kinetics. During drying at an elevated temperature (65 °C), thenardite (phase III) forms initially and then dissolves, and then thenardite (phase V) precipitates. During rewetting, the thenardite crystals formed during drying act as nucleation sites for accelerated mirabilite growth, leading to localized, transient, and anisotropic crystallization pressures up to 210 MPa. However, this high crystallization pressure alone does not guarantee macroscopic damage unless it is accompanied by substantial salt accumulation within pores, which is necessary for crack initiation and stress propagation. These findings underscore the significance of localized, transient, and anisotropic stress generation in porous media, providing critical insights into the long-term performance and deterioration mechanisms of porous materials in salt-laden environments. Abstract:The utility of colloidal nanomaterials in energy storage devices, high-definition displays, and industrial coatings depends on their solution processibility and stability. Traditional theories of solvation and colloidal stability, namely Derjaguin- Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) and Flory-Huggins theories, describe classical approaches to solvation and colloidal sta- bility of hard-shell colloids and macromolecules, respectively. In contrast, the solution-state behavior of polymers, proteins, and related macromolecules must be understood in terms of solvent interactions, which become especially important due to the accessible cavities of hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties in these systems. The colloidal stability of permanently porous materials, such as nanoparticles of metal-organic frameworks (nanoMOFs), on the other hand, challenges conventional notions of colloidal stability due to the presence of both internal and external surfaces, and because their external surfaces are mostly empty space. To develop nanoMOFs and other porous colloids into useful materials, we must understand the solvation of porous interfaces. Here, we discuss classical models of solvation and colloidal stability for non-porous and pseudo-porous (proteins and polymers) materials as a basis to propose that the colloidal stability of porous materials likely involves self- assembled solvation shells and strong solvent interactions with the molecular components of the nanomaterial.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Porous materials have been extensively developed and displayed special applications in diverse fields, however, it still remains a great challenge in developing new synthetic methods with features of energy‐saving and easy‐operating. In this study, we reported the construction of a series of novel ionic complexes based on discrete supramolecular triangle structure and polyoxometalate [Mo 6 O 19 ] 2– , using a quite efficient strategy. The obtained composites exhibit precise 3D network structures with ideal stability containing micropores, which were characterized by the 1 H NMR, ESI‐MS, TEM, SEM, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. These composites showed differential vapor adsorption behaviors for benzene, toluene, and cyclohexane. This work provides a novel approach for fabricating porous materials through electrostatic interactions and has great potential for gas separation.

Abstract:In 2007 the idea was put forward that, through careful molecular design, it should be possible to synthesize liquids which contain permanent, well-defined molecule-sized cavities (pores). Such "porous liquids" could be a kind of liquid zeolite, or liquid MOF (metal-organic framework), exhibiting the size and shape-selective sorption (or dissolution) associated with microporous solids as well as the fluidity of liquids - a new and potentially useful combination of properties. However, these materials remained essentially hypothetical until recently. In 2014 and 2015 three papers were published which describe convincing examples of porous liquids, and studies have shown that they do exhibit some remarkable properties, such as very fast gas diffusion and high gas solubilities. The examples reported so far are almost certainly only the tip of the iceberg. Now that porous liquids are 'real', a new area of materials science may open up, with clear potential for long-term applications in chemical processes.

Abstract:Molecular crystals cannot be designed in the same manner as macroscopic objects, because they do not assemble according to simple, intuitive rules. Their structures result from the balance of many weak interactions, rather than from the strong and predictable bonding patterns found in metal–organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks. Hence, design strategies that assume a topology or other structural blueprint will often fail. Here we combine computational crystal structure prediction and property prediction to build energy–structure–function maps that describe the possible structures and properties that are available to a candidate molecule. Using these maps, we identify a highly porous solid, which has the lowest density reported for a molecular crystal so far. Both the structure of the crystal and its physical properties, such as methane storage capacity and guest-molecule selectivity, are predicted using the molecular structure as the only input. More generally, energy–structure–function maps could be used to guide the experimental discovery of materials with any target function that can be calculated from predicted crystal structures, such as electronic structure or mechanical properties.
