Abstract:Highlights of news from Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in the period July 2016-2017 are presented. 2017 was the 70th birthday of Brookhaven National Laboratory which was built starting in 1947 on Camp Upton, a military base in 1917 for World War I and in September 1944 for World War II. Highlights in 70 years of research at BNL are presented, which include 6 Nobel Prizes as well as other important discoveries and inventions. RHIC is the world's only polarized proton collider and a review of the establishment of the Riken BNL Research Center with research focus on spiin physics at RHIC is presented. Discoveries at RHIC in Jet Quenching and the Quark Gluon Plasma are reviewed as well as new ideas on flow in small systems including a measurement of the vorticity of the QGP via polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons. An attempt at measuring the transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ of the Quark Gluon Plasma from azimuthal broadening of high $p_T$ di-hadron pairs is presented.

Abstract:Nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC produce high temperature and high energy density matter which exhibits partonic degrees of freedom. We will discuss measurements of nuclear modification factors for light hadrons and non-photonic electrons from heavy quark decays, which reflect the flavor dependence of energy loss of high momentum partons traversing the dense QCD medium. The hadronization of bulk partonic matter exhibits collectivity in effective partonic degrees of freedom. Nuclear collisions at RHIC provide an intriguing environment, where many constituent quark ingredients are readily available for possible formation of exotic particles through quark coalescences or recombinations.

Abstract:The results from data taken during the last several years at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) will be reviewed in the paper. Several selected topics that further our understanding of constituent quark scaling, jet quenching and color screening effect of heavy quarkonia in the hot dense medium will be presented. Detector upgrades will further probe the properties of Quark Gluon Plasma. Future measurements with upgraded detectors will be presented. The discovery perspectives from future measurements will also be discussed.

Abstract:Recent experimental results obtained in STAR experiment at the Relativistic heavy-ion collider (RHIC) with ion beams will be discussed. Investigations of different nuclear collisions in some recent years focus on two main tasks, namely, detail study of quark-gluon matter properties and exploration of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram. Results at top RHIC energy show clearly the collective behavior of heavy quarks in nucleus-nucleus interactions. Jet and heavy hadron measurements lead to new constraints for energy loss models for various flavors. Heavy-ion collisions are unique tool for the study of topological properties of theory as well as the magneto-hydrodynamics of strongly interacting matter. Experimental results obtained for discrete QCD symmetries at finite temperatures confirm indirectly the topologically non-trivial structure of QCD vacuum. Finite global vorticity observed in non-central Au+Au collisions can be considered as important signature for presence of various chiral effects in sQGP. Most results obtained during stage I of the RHIC beam energy scan (BES) program show smooth behavior vs initial energy. However certain results suggest the transition in the domain of dominance of hadronic degrees of freedom at center-of-mass energies between 10--20 GeV. The stage II of the BES at RHIC will occur in 2019--2020 and will explore with precision measurements in the domain of the QCD phase diagram with high baryon densities. Future developments and more precise studies of features of QCD phase diagram in the framework of stage II of RHIC BES will be briefly discussed.

Abstract:This article is based on my Proceedings for the 47th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics on the Most Unexpected at LHC and the Status of High Energy Frontier, Erice, Sicily, Italy, 2009. Results from the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in nucleus-nucleus and proton-proton collisions at c.m. energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are presented in the context of the methods of single and two-particle inclusive reactions which were used in the discovery of hard-scattering in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR in the 1970's. These techniques are used at RHIC in A+A collisions because of the huge combinatoric background from the large particle multiplicity. Topics include $J/\Psi$ suppression, jet quenching in the dense medium (sQGP) as observed with $\pi^0$ at large transverse momentum, thermal photons, collective flow, two-particle correlations, suppression of heavy quarks at large $p_T$ and its possible relation to Higgs searches at the LHC. The differences and similarities of the measurements in p-p and A+A collisions are presented. The two discussion sessions which followed the lectures on which this article is based are included at the end.

Abstract:I outline experimental results on heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for a non-technical audience. This includes: elliptic flow and nearly ideal hydrodynamics; the suppression of hard particles and the ratio R_AA; and electromagnetic signals, including dileptons and direct photons. Especially puzzling is why the behavior of heavy (charm) quarks appears to be so similar to that of light quarks.

Abstract:We investigate resonant tunneling through molecular states of coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. The conductance through the system consists of two resonances associated with the bonding and the antibonding quantum states. We predict that the two resonances are composed of a Breit-Wigner resonance and a Fano resonance, those widths and Fano factor depending on the AB phase very sensitively. Further, we point out that the bonding properties, such as the covalent and the ionic bonding, can be identified by the AB oscillations.

Laminar Branched Surfaces in 3-manifolds

Abstract:We define a laminar branched surface to be a branched surface satisfying the following conditions: (1) Its horizontal boundary is incompressible; (2) there is no monogon; (3) there is no Reeb component; (4) there is no sink disk (after eliminating trivial bubbles in the branched surface). The first three conditions are standard in the theory of branched surfaces, and a sink disk is a disk branch of the branched surface with all branch directions of its boundary arcs pointing inwards. We will show in this paper that every laminar branched surface carries an essential lamination, and any essential lamination that is not a lamination by planes is carried by a laminar branched surface. This implies that a 3-manifold contains an essential lamination if and only if it contains a laminar branched surface.

Abstract:This document presents BNL's plan for an electron-ion collider, eRHIC, a major new research tool that builds on the existing RHIC facility to advance the long-term vision for Nuclear Physics to discover and understand the emergent phenomena of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory of the strong interaction that binds the atomic nucleus. We describe the scientific requirements for such a facility, following up on the community-wide 2012 white paper, 'Electron-Ion Collider: the Next QCD Frontier', and present a design concept that incorporates new, innovative accelerator techniques to provide a cost-effective upgrade of RHIC with polarized electron beams colliding with the full array of RHIC hadron beams. The new facility will deliver electron-nucleon luminosity of 10^33-10^34 cm-1sec-1 for collisions of 15.9 GeV polarized electrons on either 250 GeV polarized protons or 100 GeV/u heavy ion beams. The facility will also be capable of providing an electron beam energy of 21.2 GeV, at reduced luminosity. We discuss the on-going R&D effort to realize the project, and present key detector requirements and design ideas for an experimental program capable of making the 'golden measurements' called for in the EIC White Paper.

Abstract:Exploration of the hot and dense nuclear matter produced in collisions of heavy ions is one of the main goals of modern high energy nuclear physics. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provides a unique opportunity to map the QCD phase diagram by colliding different nucleus species and varying the energy of collisions. RHIC has already begun the second phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program, which will allow us to cover energy range for gold-gold collisions $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} = 7.7{\kern 1pt} - {\kern 1pt} 27$$ GeV. The Fixed-target Program (FXT) will extend collision energy range available for the analysis down to $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} = 3.0$$ GeV. BES-II along with FXT will dramatically enhance our understanding of the QCD phase diagram in the broad range of baryon chemical potential, $${{\mu }_{{\text{B}}}}$$ , up to 720 MeV. Recent detector upgrades increase STAR’s acceptance both in rapidity and low transverse momentum, and extend its particle identification capabilities. With new detectors STAR can explore phase diagram with even higher precision hopefully reaching both the onset of deconfinement as well as the critical point. In this talk, we present the most recent results and future plans from the STAR experiment.

Abstract:We will present a review of selected results on strange baryon production from nucleus-nucleus collisions at the AGS, SPS and RHIC. From the AGS and SPS heavy ion physics program several intriguing aspects: centrality dependence of strangeness production, anti-hyperon yield, hyperon production enhancement and baryon number transport will be highlighted. Our discussion on RHIC results will focus on experimental probes of partonic degree of freedom. Measurements of the elliptic flow v2 and the nuclear modification factor and their distinctive particle dependence are presented as a function of transverse momentum.
An Experiment Study on the Quark Matter Properties and QCD Phase Structure at RHIC

Abstract:In this paper, we review the recent results from relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider-Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (RHIC-STAR), primarily focusing on collective flow; high moments of conserved quantities; and the production of light nuclei, heavy flavor and strange hadrons. The experiment discovered thermalized quark matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. With measurements from RHIC-STAR Beam Energy Scan Phase I, several observables indicate the Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) critical region exists below collision energy root s(NN) = 39 GeV. Finally, we discuss ongoing global facilities for beam energy scan experiments and the research direction of QCD phase structure.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) detector is a single-arm forward spectrometer at the LHC, designed for the study of heavy flavour physics. In this proceedings, an overview of the detector performance and a few recent results in the field of beauty and charm physics are presented. The LHCb experiment has also undergone a major upgrade in preparation for Run 3 and Run 4 of LHC, the proceedings will briefly highlight the current activities undertaken during this period. This proceedings is based on the plenary talk presented at the XXV DAE-BRNS High Energy Physics Symposium held from 12-16 December 2022 at IISER Mohali, India.

Lectures on the Theory of High Energy A+A at RHIC

Abstract:In these lectures aspects of current theory used to interpret the preliminary data on ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC energies in terms of the physical properties of QCD matter at extreme densities are introduced. Topics include: What are the physics questions at SPS and RHIC?, Geometrical vs Dynamical features of A+A, The interplay of computable Hard pQCD vs phenomenological Soft dynamics, Baryon number transport and Junctions, How can we compute and get experimental control over the initial conditions?, How to reconcile apparent hydrodynamic behavior with partonic/hadronic transport theory. I use the Preliminary RHIC data available up to June 1,2001 to illustrate these topics. Since the main new observable at RHIC relative to SPS is jet quenching, I elaborate on this ``tomographic'' probe of ultra-dense matter. The possible discovery of jet quenching at RHIC by STAR and PHENIX is highlighted.
