Abstract:An electron-proton/ion collider facility (eRHIC) is under consideration at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Such a new facility will require the design and construction of a new optimized detector profiting from the experience gained from the H1 and ZEUS detectors operated at the HERA collider at DESY. The details of the design will be closely coupled to the design of the interaction region, and thus to the machine development work in general. An overview of the accelerator and detector design concepts will be provided.

Abstract:This document presents BNL's plan for an electron-ion collider, eRHIC, a major new research tool that builds on the existing RHIC facility to advance the long-term vision for Nuclear Physics to discover and understand the emergent phenomena of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory of the strong interaction that binds the atomic nucleus. We describe the scientific requirements for such a facility, following up on the community-wide 2012 white paper, 'Electron-Ion Collider: the Next QCD Frontier', and present a design concept that incorporates new, innovative accelerator techniques to provide a cost-effective upgrade of RHIC with polarized electron beams colliding with the full array of RHIC hadron beams. The new facility will deliver electron-nucleon luminosity of 10^33-10^34 cm-1sec-1 for collisions of 15.9 GeV polarized electrons on either 250 GeV polarized protons or 100 GeV/u heavy ion beams. The facility will also be capable of providing an electron beam energy of 21.2 GeV, at reduced luminosity. We discuss the on-going R&D effort to realize the project, and present key detector requirements and design ideas for an experimental program capable of making the 'golden measurements' called for in the EIC White Paper.

Abstract:An electron-proton/ion collider facility (eRHIC) is under consideration at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Such a new facility will require the design and construction of a new optimized detector profiting from the world's first ep collider facility HERA at DESY. The detailed design is closely coupled to the design of the interaction region and thus to the machine development work in general. Implications and constraints on the ep(A) interaction-region design will be discussed.

Beam-beam study of ERL based eRHIC

Abstract:Beam-beam effects in eRHIC, the proposed ERL-based Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at BNL, have several unique features distinguishing them from those in hadron-colliders and lepton-colliders. Taking the advantage of the fact that the electron beam is used only once, we expect the luminosity to be 10 times greater than for the ring-ring collision scheme with similar parameters. However, without instituting proper treatments, the quality of electron and hadron beams can undergo degradation or even beam loss, driven by the beam-beam interactions. We will discuss the harmful effects, including the disruption and mismatch effect of the electron beam, the kink instability and the noise heating of the ion beam and the possible countermeasures.

Abstract:The Electron-Ion collider (EIC) will be the ultimate facility to study the dynamics played by the colored quarks and gluons to the emergence of the global phenomenology of the nucleons and nuclei as described by Quantum Chromodynamics. The physics programs will greatly rely on efficient particle identification (PID) in both the forward and the backward regions. The forward and the backward RICHes of the EIC have to be able to cover wide acceptance and momentum ranges; in the forward region a dual radiator RICH (dRICH) is foreseen and in the backward region a proximity-focusing RICH can be foreseen to be employed. The geometry and the performance studies of the dRICH have been performed as prescribed in the EIC Yellow Report using the ATHENA software framework. This part of our work reports the effort following the call for EIC detector proposal the studies related to the forward and the backward RICHes performance. In the forward region, dRICH performance showed a pion-kaon separation from around 1 GeV/c to 50 GeV/c at a three sigma level; the proximity focusing RICH (pfRICH) foreseen for the backward region can reach three sigma separation up to 3 GeV/c for e/$\pi$ and up to 10 GeV/c for $\pi$/K mass hypothesis.

Nuclear physics with a medium-energy Electron-Ion Collider

Abstract:A polarized ep/eA collider (Electron-Ion Collider, or EIC) with variable center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) ~ 20-70 GeV and a luminosity ~ 10^{34} cm^{-2} s^{-1} would be uniquely suited to address several outstanding questions of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and the microscopic structure of hadrons and nuclei: (i) the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon in QCD (sea quark and gluon spatial distributions, orbital motion, polarization, correlations); (ii) the fundamental color fields in nuclei (nuclear parton densities, shadowing, coherence effects, color transparency); (iii) the conversion of color charge to hadrons (fragmentation, parton propagation through matter, in-medium jets). We briefly review the conceptual aspects of these questions and the measurements that would address them, emphasizing the qualitatively new information that could be obtained with the collider. Such a medium-energy EIC could be realized at Jefferson Lab after the 12 GeV Upgrade (MEIC), or at Brookhaven National Lab as the low-energy stage of eRHIC.

Abstract:We have explored a concept for an advanced Normal-Conducting Radio-Frequency (NCRF) C-band linear accelerator (linac) structure to achieve a high gradient, high power e$^+$e$^-$ linear collider in the TeV class. This design study represents the first comprehensive investigation for an emerging class of distributed coupling accelerator topology exploring nominal cavity geometries, frequency and temperature of operation. The structure features internal manifolds for distributing RF power separately to each cell, permitting the full structure geometry to be designed for high shunt impedance and low breakdown. Optimized within operational constraints, we find that it is advantageous for the structure to be cooled directly by liquid nitrogen (LN), further increasing the shunt impedance. A crucial part of this design process has been cost optimization, which is largely driven by the cost of peak RF power. The first operation of a distributed coupling structure at cryogenic temperatures and the nominal operating gradient 120 MeV/m is also presented, demonstrating the feasibility of achieving high-gradient performance with a cryogenically-cooled normal-conducting accelerating structure.
R&D for Positron Sources at High-Energy Lepton Colliders

Abstract:Several designs for high-energy Lepton Colliders serving as Higgs factories but extendable to higher energies up to the TeV range are under discussion. The most mature design is the International Linear Collider (ILC), but also the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) as well as the new concept of a Hybrid Asymmetric Linear Higgs Factory (HALHF) have a large physics potential. The first energy stage with $\sqrt{s}=250$~GeV requires high luminosity and polarized beams and imposes an effort for all positron source designs at high-energy colliders. In the baseline design of the ILC, an undulator-based source is foreseen for the positron source in order to match the physics requirements. In this contribution an overview is given about the undulator-based source, the target tests, the rotating target wheel design, as well as the pulsed solenoid and the new technology development of plasma lenses as optic matching devices.

Abstract:The high-luminosity high-energy Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) will provide a clean environment to study several fundamental questions in the high energy and nuclear physics fields. A high granularity and low material budget vertex and tracking detector is required to provide precise measurements of primary and displaced vertex and track reconstruction with good momentum and spatial resolutions. The reference design of the EIC project detector at the first Interaction Point (IP), which was selected from three submitted EIC detector proposals, enables a series of high precision heavy flavor measurements. Based on the EIC project detector reference design, the newly formed ePIC collaboration is developing the technical design for the EIC project detector towards its construction and operation. The reference design of the EIC vertex and tracking detector consists of the Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) based silicon vertex and tracking subsystem, the Micro-Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) based gas tracking subsystem and the AC-Coupled Low Gain Avalanche Diode (AC-LGAD) based silicon outer tracker, and it has the track reconstruction capability in the pseudorapidity region of -3.5 to 3.5 with full azimuthal coverage. Further detector geometry optimization with a new magnet and technology down selection are underway by the ePIC collaboration. The latest ePIC vertex and tracking detector geometry and its performance evaluated in simulation will be presented. Details of the EIC vertex and tracking detector R$\&$D, which include the proposed detector technologies, prototype sensor characterization and detector mechanical design will be discussed as well.

Abstract:The proposed high luminosity high energy Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will explore the proton/nuclear structure in a wide Bjorken-x ($x_{BJ}$) and $Q^{2}$ phase space. Heavy flavor products are generated in initial collisions and have their hadronization influenced by the nuclear medium. Heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements at the future EIC will allow us to better constrain the nPDFs especially in the poorly constrained high $x_{BJ}$ region, precisely determine the quark/gluon fragmentation processes and directly study the quark/gluon energy loss within the nuclear medium. These measurements can constrain the cold nuclear medium effects for previous and ongoing heavy ion measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Silicon vertex/tracking detectors are essential to realize the heavy flavor and jet measurements at the EIC. Feasibility studies in simulation for proposed heavy flavor and jet observable with evaluated detector performance at the future EIC will be discussed.

A New Framework for Synchrotron Radiation Studies in the EIC Experiment

Abstract:The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a cutting-edge particle accelerator aimed at investigating the fundamental structure of matter by colliding high-energy polarized electron beams with ions. To explore dense gluon systems and uncover the origins of nucleon mass and spin, the EIC will operate at high beam currents and luminosities. However, this approach raises beam-induced background rates, notably from synchrotron radiation (SR), which poses significant challenges to the performance and longevity of the Electron-Proton/Ion Collider (ePIC) general-purpose spectrometer placed at the interaction point (IP). This paper presents a newly developed Monte-Carlo simulation framework for accurately modeling SR backgrounds in the detector, focusing on the reflection of X-ray photons on vacuum-metal interfaces. Utilizing the extensive capabilities of Geant4 for particle-matter interactions and propagation through the geometry, the study provides first estimates of SR rates in ePIC. The results also propose countermeasures to protect sensitive electronics, ensuring stable and reliable detector operation within the EIC environment.

Abstract:Highlights of news from Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in the period July 2016-2017 are presented. 2017 was the 70th birthday of Brookhaven National Laboratory which was built starting in 1947 on Camp Upton, a military base in 1917 for World War I and in September 1944 for World War II. Highlights in 70 years of research at BNL are presented, which include 6 Nobel Prizes as well as other important discoveries and inventions. RHIC is the world's only polarized proton collider and a review of the establishment of the Riken BNL Research Center with research focus on spiin physics at RHIC is presented. Discoveries at RHIC in Jet Quenching and the Quark Gluon Plasma are reviewed as well as new ideas on flow in small systems including a measurement of the vorticity of the QGP via polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons. An attempt at measuring the transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ of the Quark Gluon Plasma from azimuthal broadening of high $p_T$ di-hadron pairs is presented.

Abstract:The proposed high-luminosity high-energy Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide a clean environment to precisely study several fundamental questions in the fields of high-energy and nuclear physics . A low material budget and high granularity silicon vertex/tracking detector is critical to carry out a series of hadron and jet measurements at the future EIC especially for the heavy flavor product reconstruction or tagging. The conceptual design of a proposed forward silicon tracking detector with the pseudorapidity coverage from 1.2 to 3.5 has been developed in integration with different magnet options and the other EIC detector sub-systems. The tracking performance of this detector enables precise heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements in the hadron beam going direction. The detector R$\&$D for the proposed silicon technology candidates: Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) and radiation hard depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MALTA), which can provide good spatial and timing resolutions, is underway. Bench test results of the LGAD and MALTA prototype sensors will be discussed.

Exploration of hadronization through heavy flavor production at the future Electron-Ion Collider

Abstract:The future Electron-Ion Collider will utilize high-luminosity high-energy electron+proton ($e+p$) and electron+nucleus ($e+A$) collisions to solve several fundamental questions in the high energy nuclear physics field. Heavy flavor products play an important role in constraining the initial-state nucleon/nucleus parton distribution functions especially in the high and low Bjorken-x ($x_{BJ}$) region and exploring the final-state parton propagation and hadronization processes under different nuclear medium conditions. Latest simulation studies of heavy flavor hadron and jet measurements with the EIC project detector conceptual design will be discussed. The projected statistical accuracy of heavy flavor jet and heavy flavor hadron inside jet measurements in comparison with latest theoretical calculations will be presented.

Abstract:The Cornell-BNL FFAG-ERL Test Accelerator (C$\beta$) will comprise the first ever Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) based on a Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) lattice. In particular, we plan to use a Non Scaling FFAG (NS-FFAG) lattice that is very compact and thus space- and cost- effective, enabling multiple passes of the electron beam in a single recirculation beam line, using the superconducting RF (SRF) linac multiple times. The FFAG-ERL moves the cost optimized linac and recirculation lattice to a dramatically better optimum. The prime accelerator science motivation for C$\beta$ is proving that the FFAG-ERL concept works. This is an important milestone for the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) plans to build a major Nuclear Physics facility, eRHIC, based on producing 21 GeV electron beams to collide with the RHIC ion beams. A consequence of the C$\beta$ work would be the availability of significantly better, cost-effective, compact CW high-brightness electron beams for a plethora of scientific investigations and applications, such as X-ray sources, dark-matter and dark-energy searches, and industrial high-power Free-Electron Laser (FEL) applications. C$\beta$ brings together the resources and expertise of a large DOE National Laboratory, BNL, and a leading research university, Cornell. C$\beta$ will be built in an existing building at Cornell, for the most part using components that have been developed under previous R&D programs, including a fully commissioned world-leading photoemission electron injector, a large SRF accelerator module, and a high-power beam stop. The only elements that require design and construction from scratch is the FFAG magnet transport lattice. This white paper describes a project that promises to propel high-power, high-brightness electron beam science and applications to an exciting new level.

Abstract:High-beta superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) elliptical cavities are being developed for several accelerator projects including Project X, the European XFEL, and the International Linear Collider (ILC). Fermilab has recently established an extensive infrastructure for SRF cavity R&D for future accelerators, including cavity surface processing and testing and cavity assembly into cryomodules. Some highlights of the global effort in SRF R&D toward improving cavity performance, and Fermilab SRF cavity R&D in the context of global projects are reviewed.

Abstract:We propose a new experiment Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider forward (RHICf) for the precise measurements of very forward particle production at RHIC. The proposal is to install the LHCf Arm2 detector in the North side of the ZDC installation slot at the PHENIX interaction point. By installing high-resolution electromagnetic calorimeters at this location we can measure the spectra of photons, neutrons and pi0 at pseudorapidity eta>6.

Abstract:It has been known since decades that the alignment of a beam of high-energy electrons with particular crystal directions involves a significant increase of bremsstrahlung radiation emission. This enhancement lies at the conceptual foundation of innovative positron source schemes for future lepton colliders. In particular, the so-called hybrid scheme makes use of a heavy-metal radiator in crystalline form, which is then followed by an amorphous metallic converter for positron generation from electrons by means of a two-step electromagnetic process. This work presents the most recent simulation results obtained on the development of a hybrid positron source for the FCC-$ee$ from the standpoint of the features of both the crystalline radiator and the amorphous converter.

Abstract:In recent years, the interest in high intensity proton beams in excess of several milli-amperes has risen. Potential applications are in neutrino physics, materials and energy research, and isotope production. Continuous wave proton beams of five to ten milli-amperes are now in reach due to advances in accelerator technology and through improved understanding of the beam dynamics. As an example application, we present the proposed IsoDAR experiment, a search for so-called sterile neutrinos and non-standard interaction using the KamLAND detector located in Japan. We present updated sensitivities for this experiment and describe in detail the design of the high intensity proton driver that uses several novel ideas. These are: accelerating H 2 + instead of protons, directly injecting beam into the cyclotron via a radio frequency quadrupole, and carefully matching the beam to achieve so-called vortex motion. The preliminary design holds up well in PIC simulation studies and the injector system is now being constructed, to be commissioned with a 1MeV/amu test cyclotron.
