Abstract:This study explores the thermal Marangoni hydrodynamics in an immiscible, binary-liquid thin-film system, which is open to the gas phase at the top and rests on a heated substrate with wavy topology. The sinusoidal contour of the heated (constant-temperature) substrate results in temperature gradients along the liquid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, causing fluctuations in the interfacial tension, ultimately leading to Marangoni hydrodynamics in the liquid-liquid films. This type of flow is notable in liquid film coatings on patterned surfaces, which are widely used in MEMS/NEMS applications (Weinstein, S. J.; Palmer, H. J. Liquid Film Coating: Scientific Principles and Their Technological Implications; 1997, pp 19-62; Palacio, M.; Bhushan, B. Adv. Mater. 2008, 20, 1194-1198) and biological cell sorting operations (Witek, M. A.; Freed, I. M.; Soper, S. A. Anal. Chem. 2019, 92, 105-131). We solve the coupled Navier-Stokes and energy equations by the perturbation technique to obtain approximate analytical solutions and an understanding of the thermal and hydrodynamic transport in the system domain. Our study explores the parametric influence of the relative thermal conductivity of the liquid layers (k), film thickness ratio (r), and the system's Biot number (Bi) on these transport phenomena. While the strength of the thermal Marangoni effect that is generated reduces with an increase in the relative thermal conductivity (k), the impact of r depends on the k value. We observe that for k > 1 the intensity of Marangoni flow increases with r; however, the opposite holds for k < 1. Furthermore, larger values of Bi induce higher resistance to the vertical conduction from the wavy substrate compared to the convection resistance offered at the top surface, destructively interfering with the ability of the patterned substrate to generate interfacial temperature fluctuations and hence weakening the Marangoni flow.

Abstract:The current paper utilizes the viscous potential theory to analyze the temporal stability of a swirling annulus of two nano gas–liquid layers. The analysis depends mainly on the normal mode technique. The distributions of the heat, volume fraction, and velocity field are achieved. Furthermore, surface tension is considered as a function of the heat and the volume fraction distributions. Therefore, the impact of the Marangoni convection is taken into account. The balance of the normal stress tensor at the interface yields a complicated transcendental dispersion equation. Actually, this equation has no exact solution. Consequently, numerical calculations are established to indicate the relation between the growth rate and the wavenumber of the surface waves. Graphically, the influences of the various physical parameters are depicted. It is found that the Brownian motion accelerates the particles which leads to a destabilization of the interface. Simultaneously, the thermophoresis produces a motion of hot particles from the interface towards the boundaries, which stabilizes the interface. Furthermore, the increase of the surface tension, due to the Marangoni effect, enhances the interface rigidity and stabilizes it.

Abstract:This study conducts a comprehensive exploration of the elasticity and Marangoni instability exhibited by a non-Newtonian polymer film flow down an inclined plane within the context of an upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) model. The asymptotic solutions are derived utilizing the stream function and perturbation method based on the long-wave assumption. The numerical solutions are effectively solved at arbitrary wavelengths through the implementation of the Chebyshev spectral collocation technique. The results show that the presence of elastic stress renders the film more susceptible to destabilization. The underlying mechanisms that instigate the instability are examined from an energy balance perspective. It is determined that the instability of the film is predominantly governed by shear stress (SHE) and elastic stress (DIP) effects. Shear stress increases the perturbation kinetic energy to promote instability, while elastic stress decreases the perturbation kinetic energy to enhance stability. However, for the Weissenberg number Wi=1 , the shear stress changes from an unstable to a stabilizing factor, and the elastic stress changes from stable to unstable when the wave number k>1 . This intriguing inversion is attributed to the dual nature of elasticity, possessing both stabilizing and destabilizing tendencies. Despite the work of Marangoni stress (MAT) magnitude remaining within the order of 10−3 , the Marangoni effect indirectly contributes to instability enhancement.

Solutal Marangoni instability in layered two-phase flows

Abstract:In this paper, the instability of layered two-phase flows caused by the presence of a soluble surfactant (or a surface active solute) is studied. The fluids have different viscosities, but are density matched to focus on Marangoni effects. The fluids flow between two flat plates, which are maintained at different solute concentrations. This establishes a constant flux of solute from one fluid to the other in the base state. A linear stability analysis is performed, using a combination of asymptotic and numerical methods. In the creeping flow regime, Marangoni stresses destabilize the flow, provided a concentration gradient is maintained across the fluids. One long wave and two short wave Marangoni instability modes arise, in different regions of parameter space. A well-defined condition for the long wave instability is determined in terms of the viscosity and thickness ratios of the fluids, and the direction of mass transfer. Energy budget calculations show that the Marangoni stresses that drive long and short wave instabilities have distinct origins. The former is caused by interface deformation while the latter is associated with convection by the disturbance flow. Consequently, even when the interface is non-deforming (in the large interfacial tension limit), the flow can become unstable to short wave disturbances. On increasing $Re$, the viscosity-induced interfacial instability comes into play. This mode is shown to either suppress or enhance the Marangoni instability, depending on the viscosity and thickness ratios. This analysis is relevant to applications such as solvent extraction in microchannels, in which a surface-active solute is transferred between fluids in parallel stratified flow. It is also applicable to the thermocapillary problem of layered flow between heated plates.

Abstract:The flow characteristics and heat transfer were investigated for the liquid films of water, ethanol aqueous solution, glycerol aqueous solution and aqueous Na2SO4 solution. By using a sensitive thermal imaging system, the temperature and liquid distributions of the film could be carefully studied to reveal the influence of Marangoni effect on the heat transfer and flow of the binary mixture films. Since the surface tension gradient and surface tension counteracted on the film, a surface tension factor was presented to describe the surface tension effect in the films and help designing the experiments. It was concluded to be the thermal Marangoni effect that caused the cooled films expanded and the heated films contracted. A novel expansion was found for the heated ethanol aqueous film, due to the concentration variation and so-caused solutal Marangoni flow that overcame the thermal Marangoni flow in the lateral direction of the film. Theoretical analysis also indicated that the solutal Marangoni effect was more effective than the thermal Marangoni effect. Furthermore, viscosity has a complex influence on the Marangoni flow. Larger viscosity generally caused greater temperature gradient, and thus enhanced surface tension gradient (Marangoni flow), meanwhile, all the liquid flow (including Marangoni flow) were retarded due to the more significant viscous resistance.

Abstract:We study the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of gravity-driven viscous liquid films flowing under a uniformly heated or cooled inclined substrate. The long-wave assumption is adopted to derive the evolution equation of the film, which is characterized by five dimensionless parameters including Marangoni number Ma, Biot number Bi, Reynolds number Re, Weber number We, and the inclination angle alpha of the substrate. Based on the long-wave equation, we systematically examine the temporal and spatiotemporal stability of the system. Temporal stability analysis shows that the thermocapillary stress reinforces the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a heated film but counteracts the instability of a cooled film, as verified by the numerical solutions of linearized Navier-Stokes equation. In particular, this instability can be completely inhibited if a composite Marangoni number Ma* is below a critical value Ma(1)*. We further perform a spatiotemporal stability analysis to delineate the absolute and convective nature of the temporally unstable system. We find that the thermocapillary stress in the heated film enhances the absolute instability and suppresses the convective instability. The trend reverses for a cooled film that is featured by suppressed absolute instability and enhanced convective instability. More importantly, the transition between the absolute and convective instability can be characterized by another critical value, Ma(2*), beyond which the flow stability will be triggered from the convectively into the absolutely unstable. The predictions from linear stability analysis are confirmed by numerical solutions of the full long-wave evolution equation.

Abstract:Thermocapillary instability and formation of waves for a thin viscous falling film with broken time-reversal-symmetry have been discussed in this present study. The film is flowing over a flat, rigid inclined plate with linear temperature variation. The presence of the odd part of the Cauchy stress tensor with odd viscosity coefficient brings new characteristics in thin film flow. The nonlinear evolution model, which tracks the free surface formation for this problem, has been developed using classical long-wave expansion method. Due to the presence of odd viscosity in the liquid, the evolution equation modified significantly. Both spatial and temporal analysis for linear stability has been performed along with the investigation of weakly nonlinear waves, leading the free-surface equation into the famous Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation. Periodic stationary wave solutions of the full evolution equation confirm the existence of two significant wave families, γ1 and γ2, which are discussed in detail. Formation of the dynamical system and study of different bifurcation analysis and phases diagrams are also studied. The spatiotemporal evolution of the model has been analyzed numerically for different values of the odd viscosity parameter and Marangoni number. The odd viscosity gives stabilizing effect while the increase in Marangoni number increases the instability.

Abstract:A liquid film coating a cylindrical substrate is unstable to interfacial disturbances governed by Rayleigh-plateau instability. These initial disturbances grow in time and, beyond saturation, develop into a train of droplets of equal amplitude that move downstream at the same velocity. The traveling wave profiles, formed by a thermoviscous fluid as it flows down the exterior of a nonisothermal vertical cylinder, are computed as a function of various parameters. Further, this study investigates the stability behavior of these traveling waves. An unstable film leads to the formation of an axially asymmetric pattern. The influence of the thermoviscous nature of the fluid, along with the Biot number, Marangoni number, and Bond number, has been investigated. Linear stability analysis is performed by perturbing the axisymmetric traveling wave solution in the azimuthal direction. It is shown that while a gravity mode exists at small wave numbers, a thermocapillary mode exists at large wave numbers. The streamline patterns are shown to be consistent with the presence of the thermocapillary mode. The nonlinear analysis shows that the chosen pattern of instability does not correspond to the largest growth rate but is governed by the wavelength conforming to the periodic confinement in the azimuthal direction. Abstract:The thermocapillary instability of liquid sheets subjected to a temperature gradient that is perpendicular to the gas–liquid interface and moving in a gas medium is investigated in this paper. A linear instability analysis accounting for the weak form of the centrifugal force along the flow direction is proposed. The instability of liquid sheets with a temperature gradient is compared to that of isothermal liquid sheets, and the effect of the temperature difference is analyzed. The effect of the centrifugal force is also investigated. Furthermore, the effect of the density ratio, viscosity of liquid sheet and Weber number are also discussed by solving the dispersion equation. The results show that, when the thermocapillary effects are taken into account, the temporal growth rate of the varicose mode can become greater than that of the sinuous mode, in contrast to the condition of an isothermal liquid sheet. When the Marangoni number is relatively small, the swirl decreases the maximum growth rate for the sinuous mode. In other conditions, the swirl has only minor effects on the stability of the liquid sheets. The increase of the density ratio and Weber number enhances the instability of the sheets, while the increased Prandtl number has the opposite effect. The effect of the Ohnesorge number is relatively complicated.
The stability analysis of volatile liquid films in different evaporation regimes

Abstract:We investigate the role of the evaporation regime on the stability of a volatile liquid film flowing over an inclined heated surface while considering the dynamics of both the liquid phase and the diffusion of its vapor. We (i) modify the kinetic-diffusion evaporation model of Sultan et al. [Sultan et al., J. Fluid Mech. 543, 183, (2005)] to allow for the reduction in film thickness caused by evaporative mass loss, (ii) combine it with the liquid film formulation of Joo et al. [Joo et al., J. Fluid Mech. 230, 117, (1991)], and then (iii) utilize long-wave theory to derive a governing equation encapsulating the effects of inertia, hydrostatic pressure, surface tension, thermocapillarity, and evaporation. The system's dispersion relationship reveals that the Marangoni effect has two distinct components. The first results from surface tension gradients driven by the uneven heating of the liquid interface and is always destabilizing, while the second arises from surface tension gradients caused by imbalances in its latent cooling tied to vapor diffusion above it and is either stabilizing or destabilizing depending on the evaporation regime. These two components interact with evaporative mass loss and vapor recoil in a rich and dynamic manner. Moreover, we identify an evaporation regime where the kinetic and diffusion phenomena are precisely balanced and we clarify the dependence of the mass loss instability on the wave number, which we attribute to the presence of a variable vapor gradient above the liquid. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of film thinning on its stability at the two opposing limits of the evaporation regime. Finally, we conduct a spatiotemporal analysis which indicates that the strength of vapor diffusion effects is generally correlated with a shift towards absolute instability, while the thinning of the film can cause convective-to-absolute-to-convective transitions.

Abstract:By using thermal imaging technique and film thickness metering system, the surface wave and film thickness of the heated falling liquid film were experimentally investigated. Temperature variations of the heated film induce surface tension gradient and so-caused Marangoni flow that attempts to avoid the temperature variations. There are three kinds of Marangoni flow appearing in the heated falling liquid film. It is found that the lateral Marangoni flow (MF I) and the streamwise Marangoni flow (MF II) make the heated film thick, while the Marangoni flow in the surface wave (MF III) reinforces the wave and makes the heated film thin. The intensity of Marangoni flow is determined by the flow rate and the heating conditions. MF I and MF II are both enhanced with the increasing liquid flow rate. Moreover, MF III is prominent under moderate flow rates and is gradually weakened at high flow rates. The distance over which MF III starts, increases with a rise in flow rate, but is independent of the heating condition.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics and instabilities of a thin viscous liquid film flowing down an undulated inclined plate with linear temperature variation have been investigated. Using the long-wave expansion method, a non-linear evolution equation for the development of the free surface is derived under the assumption that the bottom undulations are of moderate steepness. A normal mode approach has been considered to take into account the linear stability of the film to investigate both the spatial and temporal instabilities, while the method of multiple scales is used to obtain the Ginzburg–Landau-type worldly equation for studying the weakly non-linear stability solutions. The numerical study has been carried out in python with a newly developed library Scikit–FDif. The entire investigation is done for a general bottom profile followed by a case study with a sinusoidal topography. The case study reveals that the Marangoni effect destabilizes the film flow throughout the domain, whereas the bottom steepness ζ gives a dual effect for the linear stability. In the "uphill" portion, an increase in ζ stabilizes the flow, and in the "downhill" portion, an increase in ζ gives a destabilizing effect. Furthermore, a weakly non-linear study shows that both supercritical and subcritical solutions are possible for the system. It is noted that the unconditional stable region decreases and all the other region increases in the "downhill" portion in comparison with the "uphill" portion for a fixed set of parameters. The stability analysis of a truncated bimodal system is investigated. The spatial uniform solution of the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation for sideband disturbances has also been discussed. Numerical simulation indicates that a different kind of finite-amplitude permanent wave exists. The amplitudes and the phase speeds of the wave are dependent on thermocapillary as well as the bottom steepness.

Abstract:We study theoretically internal flows in isotropic droplets formed in horizontal free-standing smectic films (FSSF) overheated above the bulk smectic-isotropic transition. The convection is due to vertical temperature gradient in the film and is driven by the surface tension variations at the drop interfaces. Using a conventional linear instability theory, we have found analytically the conditions under which the mechanical equilibrium within isotropic droplets in FSSFs becomes unstable relative to the thermocapillary convection. An explicit expression for the Marangoni number characterizing the onset of the convection as a function of the wave vector of in-plane instability and parameters of heat transfer is obtained. The cellular instability in FSSF with isotropic droplets behaving as a normal fluid (surface tension is a decreasing function of temperature) is possible for both directions of thermal gradient across the film: from bottom to top and conversely. We propose possible experimental observations enabling to check our predictions.

Abstract:A counterintuitive phenomenon, "boiling," was directly observed near the contact line of the pure water meniscus formed in a ball and disk configuration, when the ball temperature was far lower than the saturation temperature of water. The number of the emerging bubbles due to "boiling" increased with ball temperature rising; each bubble would expanse initially and then collapse. When two surfaces were heated to the same temperature, "boiling" disappeared. It was proposed that the temperature gradient between the two surfaces initiated Marangoni flow, which hindered flow toward the film, resulting in the negative pressure and cavitation in the liquid film. Pacification of thermocapillary destabilization of a liquid film in zero gravity through the use of an isothermal porous substrate

Abstract:Thin liquid films on isothermal substrates, where film is flat and parallel to the substrate, succumb to thermocapillary instabilities and rupture forming local hot-spots. These instabilities are called long wavelength instabilities and are specific to aspect ratios where the liquid film mean thickness is several orders of magnitude less than the substrate characteristic dimension. In the absence of stabilizing gravitational acceleration, the growth rate of thermocapillary instabilities is further intensified, driving the film to rupture at an even earlier time. Numerical simulations of zero gravity dynamics of Newtonian liquid films on a solid, horizontal, isothermal substrate are conducted. When the solid, isothermal substrate is replaced with one that possesses one- dimensional porosity, is fully saturated with the same fluid as that of the liquid film and is deep enough to accommodate all of the liquid on it, it is observed that destabilizing spatial modes are damped thereby preventing rupture and the film lifespan is prolonged. This nonlinear evolution is visualized and quantified using recurrence plots.

Abstract:An experimental investigation was performed on the Marangoni effect in the heat transfer process of an aqueous Na2SO4 liquid film flowing down a vertical heated plane by using a sensitive infrared technique.It shows that the thermal and solutal Marangoni effects coexist in streamwise and transverse directions on the surface of the liquid film,which are respectively resulted from the local variations of the surface temperature and concentration.The transverse thermal Marangoni effect causes the contraction of the film and thickens the liquid film,resulting in the increase of its heat resistance.Meanwhile,the streamwise one makes the film more turbulent and thins the sticky boundary layer,inducing the decrease of the heat resistance.The solutal Marangoni effect weakens the influence of transverse thermal Marangoni effect on the film and enhances the extension of the film on the heated plane.It showed that the Marangoni number Ma could not adequately clarify the influence of Marangoni effect on the liquid film flow at different Renolds number Re,thus a Marangoni effect impact factor e was introduced to determine the influence.The analysis indicates that e is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:New results concerning the problem of surface-tension-driven instability in a rotating spherical fluid shell are presented. The fluid layer is assumed to be Boussinesq-like, heated from the inner sphere and placed in a microgravity environment (Marangoni problem). Small-amplitude disturbances are considered and the normal mode problem is solved numerically by means of a finite difference technique. Marginal stability curves are computed and surstability is exhibited. Onset of convection is subordinated to several parameters like the thickness of the layer, its angular velocity, and its viscous and diffusive properties; all these effects receive a special treatment.

Abstract:Interfacial tension gradients drive flow along liquid-liquid interfaces in a process known as the Marangoni effect. Such gradients can be caused by surfactants, which has been extensively studied in the literature. Less is known of its nanoscale properties, where molecular interfaces display properties separate from bulk liquid matter such as interfacial viscosity. In this report we study the molecular solutal Marangoni effect using molecular dynamics simulations. We show that molecular interfacial effects are important and should be accounted for in nanofluidic regimes. Hydrodynamic models can be extended with effective terms which include them.

Abstract:We study stationary, periodic solutions to the thermocapillary thin-film model 0,\ x\in \mathbb{R},$?> ∂ t h + ∂ x h 3 ∂ x 3 h − g ∂ x h + M h 2 1 + h 2 ∂ x h = 0 , t > 0 , x ∈ R , which can be derived from the Bénard–Marangoni problem via a lubrication approximation. When the Marangoni number M increases beyond a critical value M ∗ , the constant solution becomes spectrally unstable via a (conserved) long-wave instability and periodic stationary solutions bifurcate. For a fixed period, we find that these solutions lie on a global bifurcation curve of stationary, periodic solutions with a fixed wave number and mass. Furthermore, we show that the stationary periodic solutions on the global bifurcation branch converge to a weak stationary periodic solution which exhibits film rupture. The proofs rely on a Hamiltonian formulation of the stationary problem and the use of analytic global bifurcation theory. Finally, we show the instability of the bifurcating solutions close to the bifurcation point and give a formal derivation of the amplitude equation governing the dynamics close to the onset of instability.
