Abstract:For a square matrix A of index 1, the block-rank equationrankABCX=rank(A)is studied. Geometrical conditions are given to characterize the solution of this equation. Further, all matrices B and C are described for the solution X=A#, where A# is the group inverse of A. In addition, we extend these results to reflexive generalized inverses. This contributes to a result recently obtained by Wei [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 17 (1996) 744] and it is a generalization of a result by Groß [Lin. Alg. Appl. 289 (1999) 127].

Linear Algebra and its Applications

Abstract:<p>A complete theory of the relationship between the minimal bases and indices of rational matrices and those of their strong linearizations is presented. Such theory is based on establishing first the relationships between the minimal bases and indices of rational matrices and those of their polynomial system matrices under the classical minimality condition and certain additional conditions of properness. This is related to pioneering results obtained by Verghese, Van Dooren and Kailath in 1979-80, which were the first proving results of this type. It is shown that the definitions of linearizations and strong linearizations do not guarantee any relationship between the minimal bases and indices of the linearizations and the rational matrices in general. In contrast, simple relationships are obtained for the family of strong block minimal bases linearizations, which can be used to compute minimal bases and indices of any rational matrix, including rectangular ones, via algorithms for pencils. These results extend the corresponding ones for other families of linearizations available in recent literature for square rational matrices.</p>

Abstract:We consider invertible, row diagonally dominant real matrices and give inequalities on their minors and diagonal entries of their inverses. A very special case is that all diagonal entries of an inverse, of a row stochastic, row diagonally dominant and invertible matrix, are at least 1, with strict inequality at least when the dominance is strict. This was conjectured in international trade theory in economics and motivated the present work (though much more is proven). Some of the results generalize previously known facts for M -matrices.

Abstract:More than 70 years ago, Jaques Riguet suggested the existence of an ``analogie frappante'' (striking analogy) between so-called ``relations de Ferrers'' and a class of difunctional relations, members of which we call ``diagonals''. Inspired by his suggestion, we formulate an ``analogie frappante'' linking the notion of a block-ordered relation and the notion of the diagonal of a relation. We formulate several novel properties of the core/index of a diagonal, and use these properties to rephrase our ``analogie frappante''. Loosely speaking, we show that a block-ordered relation is a provisional ordering up to isomorphism and reduction to its core. (Our theorems make this informal statement precise.) Unlike Riguet (and others who follow his example), we avoid almost entirely the use of nested complements to express and reason about properties of these notions: we use factors (aka residuals) instead. The only (and inevitable) exception to this is to show that our definition of a ``staircase'' relation is equivalent to Riguet's definition of a ``relation de Ferrers''. Our ``analogie frappante'' also makes it obvious that a ``staircase'' relation is not necessarily block-ordered, in spite of the mental picture of such a relation presented by Riguet.

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for invertibility of symmetric three-by-three block matrices having a double saddle-point structure \fb{that guarantee the unique solvability of double saddle-point systems}. We consider various scenarios, including the case where all diagonal blocks are allowed to be rank deficient. Under certain conditions related to the nullity of the blocks and intersections of their kernels, an explicit formula for the inverse is derived.

For regular finite-dimensional linear differential-algebraic equations, all these indices exist and are equivalent. For infinite-dimensional systems, the situation is more complex. Abstract:We introduce the general notions of an index and a core of a relation. We postulate a limited form of the axiom of choice -- specifically that all partial equivalence relations have an index -- and explore the consequences of adding the axiom to standard axiom systems for point-free reasoning. Examples of the theorems we prove are that a core/index of a difunction is a bijection, and that the so-called ``all or nothing'' axiom used to facilitate pointwise reasoning is derivable from our axiom of choice.

As applications, we establish the existence of group inverses of certain 2 × 2 block-operator matrices over a Banach space. These generalize the known results, e.g., Zhou, Chen and Zhu ( Comm. Algebra 48 (2020), 676–690) and Benítez, Liu and Zhu ( Linear Multilinear Algebra 59 (2011), 279–289).

Abstract:Diagonally dominant matrices have many applications in systems and control theory. Linear dynamical systems with scaled diagonally dominant drift matrices, which include stable positive systems, allow for scalable stability analysis. For example, it is known that Lyapunov inequalities for this class of systems admit diagonal solutions. In this paper, we present an extension of scaled diagonally dominance to block partitioned matrices. We show that our definition describes matrices admitting block-diagonal solutions to Lyapunov inequalities and that these solutions can be computed using linear algebraic tools. We also show how in some cases the Lyapunov inequalities can be decoupled into a set of lower dimensional linear matrix inequalities, thus leading to improved scalability. We conclude by illustrating some advantages and limitations of our results with numerical examples.

Abstract:To study orthogonal arrays and signed orthogonal arrays, Ray-Chaudhuri and Singhi (1988 and 1994) considered some module spaces. Here, using a linear algebraic approach we define an inclusion matrix and find its rank. In the special case of Latin squares we show that there is a straightforward algorithm for generating a basis for this matrix using the so-called intercalates. We also extend this last idea.

Abstract:Block full rank pencils introduced in [Dopico et al., Local linearizations of rational matrices with application to rational approximations of nonlinear eigenvalue problems, Linear Algebra Appl., 2020] allow us to obtain local information about zeros that are not poles of rational matrices. In this paper we extend the structure of those block full rank pencils to construct linearizations of rational matrices that allow us to recover locally not only information about zeros but also about poles, whenever certain minimality conditions are satisfied. In addition, the notion of degree of a rational matrix will be used to determine the grade of the new block full rank linearizations as linearizations at infinity. This new family of linearizations is important as it generalizes and includes the structures appearing in most of the linearizations for rational matrices constructed in the literature. In particular, this theory will be applied to study the structure and the properties of the linearizations in [P. Lietaert et al., Automatic rational approximation and linearization of nonlinear eigenvalue problems, submitted].
