Abstract:Freeform optics constitutes a new technology that is currently driving substantial changes in beam shaping. Most of the current beam shaping systems are elaborately tailored for fixed optical properties, which means the output light distribution of a beam shaping system usually cannot be changed. What we present here is a class of beam shaping systems, the optical properties of which can be changed to meet the requirements for different applications. The proposed beam shaping system is composed of a freeform lens and a non-classical zoom system which is designed by ray aiming and the conservation of energy instead of aberration control. The freeform lens includes two elaborately designed freeform optical surfaces, by which both the intensity distribution and wave-front of an incident light beam are manipulated in a desired manner. The light beam after propagating through the non-classical zoom system produces an illumination pattern on a fixed observation plane with a variable pattern size and an unchanged irradiance distribution at different zoom positions. Two design examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed beam shaping systems.

Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:Freeform optics constitutes a new technology that is currently driving substantial changes in illumination design. It liberates designers and engineers from restrictions of optical surface geometry, enabling them to achieve compact, lightweight, and efficient illumination systems with excellent optical performance. Freeform optics is currently used widely for both fundamental research and practical applications. This Review focuses on the design of freeform illumination optics, which is a key factor in advancing the development of illumination engineering. The design methods of freeform illumination optics can be divided into two groups: zero-etendue algorithms based on ideal source assumption and design algorithms for extended light sources. The zero-etendue algorithms include ray mapping method, Monge-Ampere equation method, and supporting quadric method. The algorithms for extended sources include illumination optimization, feedback design, and simultaneous multiple surfaces method. The characteristics and limitations of these design methods are illustrated and a summary of these methods with future outlooks is also given.

Abstract:An advanced optical receiving antenna based on compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) is proposed for indoor visible light communication (VLC). The design of the antenna is conducted into two parts. Firstly, the Taguchi methodology and ANOVA technique are utilized to explore and optimize structural parameters of receiving lens for improving the optical efficiency and matching the channel performance requirements in VLC system. Then, the indoor communication model is established, and the channel performance is analyzed by Matlab software. The results show that: the half field of view (FOV) of the lens can reach 50 degrees, while the optical gain is 11.29. The received power is 6.7496 dBm, and the SNR is 84.9642 dB. The FOV increases by 66.67% when compared to the CPC. The SNR increases by 26.18% when compared with the case of receiving rays directly without any antenna, which is 2.13 times the CPC's SNR increase. Thus, the optimally designed lens can ensure the high-speed and stable communication of the indoor VLC systems.

Abstract:A scheme for designing a novel optical receiving antenna is proposed to extend the field of view, receive higher power, and reduce the received-energy spot area for indoor visible light communication (VLC). ProE is used to model the antenna, while TracePro and Matlab are employed for simulations. Firstly, the lens wall of a compound parabolic concentrator with a certain rotation angle and thickness is obtained through rotating the parabolic reflector cross-section reference curve. Furthermore, a novel optical receiving antenna is designed in combination with the advantages of the lens-walled CPC and the spherical lens. Then, the Taguchi methodology and ANOVA technique are utilized to optimize the structure parameters of the receiving antenna. Finally, an indoor VLC system model is established and the channel performance is analyzed. Simulation results show that the designed antenna achieves the following performances: optical gain of 21.53, field of view of 45°, and spot size of 3 mm. The received power is 9.5532 dBm, and the SNR is 86.2526 dB, which further confirms that the designed optical receiving antenna is suitable for indoor VLC systems.
Design and analysis of novel two-stage optical receiving antenna for indoor visible light communication technology

Abstract:White light emitting diode has become the next generation of light source because of its high illuminance efficiency, low power consumption, and long life, and it has also been adopted in the application of indoor visible light communication (VLC) system. The VLC has great development potentials, however, there is a lack of research on optical receiving antenna which is a key component of VLC. Therefore, in this paper we design a novel two-stage optical receiving antenna for indoor VLC system. In the designed antenna, the lens wall of a compound parabolic concentrator with a certain rotation angle and thickness is obtained through rotating the parabolic reflector cross-section reference curve. Furthermore, a novel two-stage optical receiving antenna is designed by taking advantage of lens-wall compound parabolic concentrators and hemispherical lenses. This significantly increases the view angle by nearly 20 degrees in the case of gain retention. The analytical model of the optical antenna in a 5 m x 5 m x 3 m open room is established by using a software of TracePro(TM). The indoor VLC system is also modelled and implemented by using a software of Matlab(TM). The results show that the growth rate of average received power is 757.2%, which is 5.62 times that of the compound parabolic concentrator, and the signal-noise-ratio is increased by 28.07%, on average, which is 1.67 times that of the compound parabolic concentrator. The optical gain of the two-stage optical receiving antenna is 11.49, which is 2.81 times that of the compound parabolic concentrator. The spot radius is only 2.5 mm, which is reduced by nearly 37.5% compared with the spot radius of the compound parabolic concentrator, and the energy concentration is evenly distributed at the same time. This further confirms that the designed two-stage optical receiving antenna is suitable for indoor VLC system. Finally, the performance analysis and experimental verification of the new two-stage optical receiver antenna are also given.

Abstract:Freeform liquid-crystal polarization imaging optics (LPIOs) have vast potential for application in next-generation interactive displays like augmented reality and virtual reality. However, tailoring the phase profile of a freeform LPIO for flexible aberration correction and diffraction efficiency control is still a big challenge due to the difficulties arising from the non-zero etendue of an imaging system and the finite bandwidth of LPIOs. Here, a practical approach to creating freeform LPIOs from design to fabrication is proposed. A freeform polarization exposure is developed to produce a flexible, precise, and ultra-high-resolution photoalignment pattern for a freeform LPIO. A cooperative optimization is performed between the freeform LPIO and the freeform polarization exposure system to find the optimal phase of the freeform LPIO and the optimal surface profiles of the freeform lenses employed in the exposure system to produce freeform wavefronts. The optimal phase of the freeform LPIO is then achieved by superposition interference of the engineered freeform wavefronts via freeform polarization exposure. The effectiveness of the approach and the advantages of freeform LPIOs is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed approach will significantly promote the widespread applications of freeform LPIOs in the field of optics and photonics. A practical approach to creating freeform LPIOs with flexible aberration correction and diffraction efficiency control from design to fabrication is proposed. Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:This study presents a multi-wavelength, multi-channel, and high-capacity optical antenna system. This approach is intended to allow parallel transmission with many channels and wavelengths by employing a ring array of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, with reception accomplished via a ring detector array. The system employs spatially multiplexed techniques to send the target with numerous independent signals at the same time, effectively increasing bandwidth and reducing signal interference. The method used in this design provides benefits such as effective decreasing losses caused by blocking and removing aberrations. To overcome the spatial alignment difficulty caused by the array light source's tiny beam size during long-distance transmission, this study introduces a high-precision acquisition, pointing, and tracking system as a reverse communication channel. The system's wide beam can be used to align the installation of optical antenna equipment and facilitate information transmission.

Antenna Reflector Based on Air Loaded AMC Strucuture

Abstract:Based on the requirement of gain improvement and directivity in the wireless communication, we proposed a “V” antenna reflector, which belongs to a kind of artificial magnetic conductor (AMC). The reflector could be placed near the antenna and does not change the antenna's design. It contains two planar reflectors built from air loaded AMC units on two layer dielectric substrates. The gap of air loaded is used to fine tune the AMC working frequency. The experiments results show that the monopole 2.4GHz antenna's gain could increase 5dB in the opening direction and the beam width is about 52° with the “V” reflector.

Abstract:Abstract The receiver is a signal receiving device placed at the focus of the telescope. In order to improve the observation efficiency, the concept of phased array receiver has been proposed in recent years, which places a small phased array at the focal plane of the reflector, and flexible pattern and beam scanning functions can be achieved through a beamforming network. If combined with the element multiplexing, all beams within the entire field of view can be observed simultaneously to achieve continuous sky coverage. This article focuses on the front-end array of phased array receiver at 0.7-1.8 GHz for QiTai Telescope, and designs a Vivaldi antenna array of PCB structure with dual line polarization. Each polarization antenna is designed to arrange in a rectangle manner by 11 × 10. Based on the simulation results of the focal field, 32, 18 and 8 elements were selected to form one beam at 0.7, 1.25 and 1.8 GHz. A analog beamforming network was constructed, and the measured gains of axial beam under uniform weighting were 19.32, 13.72 and 15.22 dBi. Combining the beam scanning method of reflector antenna, the pattern test of different position element sets required for PAF beam scanning was carried out under independent array. The pattern optimization at 1.25 GHz was carried out by weighting method of conjugate field matching. Compared with uniform weighting, the gain, sidelobe level, and main beam direction under conjugate field matching have been improved. Although the above test and simulation results are slightly different, which is related to the passive array and laboratory testing condition, the relevant work has accumulated experience in the development of front-end array for phased array receiver, and has good guiding significance for future performance verification after the array is installed on the telescope.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) can achieve higher data rate by increasing the number of channels using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. A fundamental question lies in the channel characterization for multiple colors, to investigate the correlation of different wavelengths. In this paper, theoretical analysis on the correlation is presented based on the multicolor light emitting diode (LED) and optical filter model. Experiments using LEDs of different wavelengths are conducted to observe the correlation of the channel matrix. Based on the experimental results, it is seen that the channel matrix is strongly correlated with a dominant eigenvalue as transmission distance and atmospheric condition change. Based on the low-rank feature of the channel matrix, we propose to project and quantize it in a low-dimensional space. Channel quantization design based on principal component analysis (PCA) is proposed such that the channel vector quantization can be transformed to scalar quantization. We also apply the one-dimensional channel quantization to the beamforming design, where the solution from the quantized channel matrix mostly shows loss lower than 1% compared with the optimal solition to the original problem.

Abstract:In this study, an ultra-high frequency antenna for TV white space devices (TVWSDs) is designed, fabricated and systematically tested. In addition to its radiation efficiency validation using a novel measurement approach, system performance of the antenna is comprehensively studied by integrating it onto different platforms, including a wideband spectrum monitor and a wireless communication client, and testing under realistic scenarios. The performance comparison with a commercial antenna is also performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the in house-developed antenna. Overall practical and real-time performance evaluations show that the in-house developed antenna is a strong contender for TVWSDs.
Development of Wide Field-of-view Receiver Feeder for Optical Wireless Communication

Abstract:In order to extend advantages of optical fiber communication such as optical amplification and processing to space optical detection, optical wireless communication and personal communication, it is necessary to receive weak optical signals from free-space into optical fibers in such a wide Field-of-view (FOV). In that case, FOV can be enlarged to tens of degrees; and then, half space could be received. However, this is not easy because the fiber's numerical aperture is usually small. Wide FOV receiver feeders for optical signals from free-space are categorized into conventional feeder and fiber-based feeder in this paper, with the latter expounded emphatically. Analysis shows that it is difficult to improve the sensitivity and FOV of the conventional feeder, whose FOV is limited by the optical system and conventional filters, at the same time. The fiber-based feeder, however, has a great potential to eliminate the limitations in the conventional feeder, and to realize a non-scanning wide FOV feeder. Thus, the latter is the development trend and has a wide application prospect. The realization of wide FOV receiver for optical signals from free-space will accelerate the development of optical wireless communication, personal communication and space optical detection, as well as increase the bandwidth of space communications; it also has a great influence on future communication.

Abstract:Although the multi-antenna or so-called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission is an enabling technology for past generations of wireless communication systems, its application to visible light communication (VLC) still faces a critical challenge due to the strong spatial correlation of VLC channels, which makes it difficult to achieve sufficient spatial multiplexing gain. This paper proposes to use optical intelligent reflecting surfaces (OIRS) to tackle this challenge. Firstly, we characterize the extremely near-field channel condition in the optical frequency range and reveal a peculiar “inter-element interference (IEI) free” property of the OIRS-reflected channel, where the OIRS reflecting elements can be individually configured to align with one pair of transmitter and receiver antennas without causing interference to each other. Next, we characterize the OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC capacities under different power constraints at the transmitter antennas, and then proceed to maximize them by jointly optimizing the OIRS element alignment and transmitter emission power. In particular, we propose two algorithms for the OIRS optimization, namely, location-aided interior-point algorithm and log-det-based alternating optimization algorithm, to balance the performance versus complexity trade-off; while the optimal transmitter emission power is derived in closed form. Numerical results are provided to validate the capacity improvement of OIRS-assisted MIMO VLC against the VLC without OIRS and demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed algorithms compared to baseline schemes.

Abstract:Laser-based visible light communication (VLC) system has been confirmed as a vital part of current VLC technology due to its high data rate and extended range. However, the application of the conventional laser VLC system is very much limited by its high directivity and thus requests a complex tracking mechanism. In this work, we present a laser-based white light VLC system with ultra-wide field-of-view (FOV) exceeding 150°, which paves the path for future deployment of laser-based VLC systems. This system consists of two blue laser diodes pumping YAG ceramic phosphor plate in a reflection configuration as the transmitter and a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) as the receiver. An engineered diffuser is integrated into the transmitter end. The system modulation bandwidth is measured to be 200 MHz, which is limited by the frequency response of the SiPM. When the forward error correction (FEC) threshold bit error rate (BER) of 3.8 × 10-3 is considered, data rates up to ~400 Mbps have been achieved within 88° using the adaptive bit loading discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation scheme. When extending the FOV to 152°, the transmission data rate remains exceeding 200 Mbps. Our work confirms the possibility of constructing the wide-angle and ultra-high-speed laser-based MIMO VLC system.
