Abstract:The utilization of waste plastic in asphalt mixtures is gaining attention due to its potential for recycling. However, a key challenge lies in the compatibility between asphalt and plastic granules. In this study, the use of bio-oil and graphene-coated plastic granules to enhance their compatibility with asphalt is explored. The altered surface properties of the granules influenced the stiffness of the contact zone, which is used as a measure of compatibility through rheological properties. The rheological properties of asphalt containing treated plastic granules were evaluated using a dynamic shear rheometer at moderate temperatures as well as a bending beam rheometer at low temperatures. To evaluate the contact property between asphalt (as matrix) and plastic particles (as inclusions), a biphasic heterogeneous viscoelastic numerical model was developed. In this model, plastic particles were randomly generated and distributed as elastic inclusions considering their grading curve. The contact between asphalt and plastic particles was modeled by adjusting contact stiffness. Results showed that the stiffness of the contact zone (area between the carbon-coated particles and the asphalt) varied depending on the temperature and the loading frequency. By implementing a numerical simulation, one can determine the stiffness of the contact zone as a measure of compatibility at a select temperature and loading frequency. This study contributes to durability and sustainability efforts by repurposing waste plastics in asphalt roads while ensuring high-performance design and engineering through quantified compatibility.
