Abstract:Nanoparticle-based composite modification is becoming more prevalent as a solution to the drawbacks of polymer modified asphalts. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential application of nano-aluminum oxide (nano-Al2O3) in enhancing the performance of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) modified asphalt. Nano-Al2O3 was added to SBR modified asphalt at different dosages of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% by weight. The chemical interaction of nano-Al2O3 with SBR was studied using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The effect of nano-Al2O3 on conventional characteristics was also investigated. Rutting performance was evaluated using zero shear viscosity (ZSV), multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), and temperature sweep tests. The fatigue behavior of the specimens was evaluated by employing linear amplitude sweep (LAS) and time sweep tests. Further, a rheology-based separation index derived from the cigar tube test was utilized for storage stability characterization. According to the results, the nano-Al2O3 addition to SBR-modified asphalt improved its stiffness, separation performance, high-temperature characteristics, fatigue performance, and resistance to aging. The optimal dosage of nano-Al2O3 for enhancing rutting performance was determined to be 3%, whereas a dosage of 4% nano-Al2O3 showed the best performance in terms of fatigue resistance. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated that nano-Al2O3 and SBR-modified asphalt did not undergo a chemical reaction; only physical interaction occurred. Overall, enhancements in performance at intermediate and high temperatures can be expected with the addition of nano-Al2O3 to the SBR modified asphalt.
