Abstract:Stimulated Raman spectroscopy has become a powerful tool to study the spatiodynamics of molecular bonds with high sensitivity, resolution and speed. However, sensitivity and speed of state-of-the-art stimulated Raman spectroscopy are currently limited by the shot-noise of the light beam probing the Raman process. Here, we demonstrate an enhancement of the sensitivity of continuous-wave stimulated Raman spectroscopy by reducing the quantum noise of the probing light below the shot-noise limit by means of amplitude squeezed states of light. Probing polymer samples with Raman shifts around 2950 $cm^{-1}$ with squeezed states, we demonstrate a quantum-enhancement of the stimulated Raman signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 3.60 dB relative to the shot-noise limited SNR. Our proof-of-concept demonstration of quantum-enhanced Raman spectroscopy paves the way for a new generation of Raman microscopes, where weak Raman transitions can be imaged without the use of markers or an increase in the total optical power.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact and versatile laser system for stimulated Raman spectroscopy (SRS). The system is based on a tunable continuous wave (CW) probe laser combined with a home-built semi-monolithic nanosecond pulsed pump Nd:YVO4 laser at 1064 nm. The CW operation of the probe laser offers narrow linewidth, low noise and the advantage that temporal synchronization with the pump is not required. The laser system enables polarization-sensitive stimulated Raman spectroscopy (PS-SRS) with fast high resolution measurement of the depolarization ratio by simultaneous detection of Raman scattered light in orthogonal polarizations, thus providing information about the symmetry of the Raman-active vibrational modes. Measurements of the depolarization ratios of the carbon-hydrogen (CH) stretching modes in two different polymer samples in the spectral range of 2825-3025 cm-1 were performed. Raman spectra are obtained at a sweep rate of 20 nm/s (84 cm-1/s) with a resolution of 0.65 cm-1. A normalization method is introduced for the direct comparison of the simultaneously acquired orthogonal polarized Raman spectra.

Abstract:Coherent Raman scattering (CRS) spectroscopy techniques have been widely developed and optimized for different applications in biomedicine and fundamental science. The most utilized CRS technique has been coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), and more recently, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Coherent Stokes Raman scattering (CSRS) has been largely ignored mainly because it is often strongly affected by fluorescence, particularly for resonance enhanced measurements. However, in the cases of resonant excitation the information contained in the CSRS signal can be different and complementary to that of CARS. Here we combine the approaches of pulse shaping, interferometric heterodyne detection, 8-step phase cycling and Fourier-transform of time-domain measurements, developed in CARS and 2D electronic spectroscopy communities, to measure resonant CSRS and CARS spectra using a Titanium:sapphire oscillator. The signal is essentially background-free (both fluorescent and non-resonant background signals are suppressed) with high spectral resolution and high sensitivity, and can access low-energy modes down to ~30 cm-1. We demonstrate the ability to easily select between CSRS and CARS schemes and show an example in which acquisition of both CSRS and CARS spectra allows vibrational modes on the excited electronic state to be distinguished from those on the ground electronic state.

Abstract:The quantum coherent dynamics of a vibronic wave packet in a molecule passing through a conical intersection can be revealed using attosecond transient coherent Raman spectroscopy. In particular, the time evolution of the electronic coherence can be monitored in the presence of vibrational dynamics. So far, the technique has been investigated without including environmental quantum noise. Abstract:Spectroscopy of molecular mixtures with broadband femtosecond laser pulses often involves simultaneous excitation of multiple molecular species with close resonance frequencies. Interpreting the collective optical response typically requires Fourier analysis of time-resolved signals. We propose and demonstrate an alternative method of separating coherent Raman scattering signals from two molecular components with neighboring vibrational modes. We exploit "silence windows," which arise from coupling of the vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom in molecular dynamics. In silence windows, the detected signal stems solely from the minority species (here, CO2), while the strong resonant background from the dominant species (O2) is greatly suppressed.

Abstract:We introduce the first method to enable an optical amplification of a coherent Raman spectroscopy signal called radio frequency Doppler Raman spectroscopy. Doppler Raman measurements amplify the optical signals in coherent Raman spectroscopy by converting a spectral frequency shift imparted by an impulsive coherent Raman excitation to a change in a probe pulse transit time. This transit time perturbation is detected through the phase of a radio frequency electronic signal measured at a harmonic of the probe pulse train. By exploiting this new capability to scale the signal of a coherent Raman spectroscopic signal, we open the potential to detect very weak Raman spectroscopy signals that are currently not observable due to limits of illumination intensity imposed by laser damage to the specimen.

Abstract:Driven by applications in chemical sensing, biological imaging and material characterisation, Raman spectroscopies are attracting growing interest from a variety of scientific disciplines. The Raman effect originates from the inelastic scattering of light, and it can directly probe vibration/rotational-vibration states in molecules and materials. Despite numerous advantages over infrared spectroscopy, spontaneous Raman scattering is very weak, and consequently, a variety of enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques have emerged. These techniques include stimulated Raman scattering and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering, as well as surface- and tip-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopies. The present review provides the reader with an understanding of the fundamental physics that govern the Raman effect and its advantages, limitations and applications. The review also highlights the key experimental considerations for implementing the main experimental Raman spectroscopic techniques. The relevant data analysis methods and some of the most recent advances related to the Raman effect are finally presented. This review constitutes a practical introduction to the science of Raman spectroscopy; it also highlights recent and promising directions of future research developments.

Abstract:In this Letter we present a new technique for attaining efficient low-background coherent Raman scattering where the Raman coherence is mediated by a tunable infrared laser in two-photon resonance with a chosen vibrational transition. In addition to the traditional benefits of conventional coherent Raman schemes, this approach offers a number of advantages including potentially higher emission intensity, reduction of nonresonant four-wave mixing background, preferential excitation of the anti-Stokes field, and simplified phase matching conditions. In particular, this is demonstrated in gaseous methane along the ν_{1} (A_{1}) and ν_{3} (T_{2}) vibrational levels using an infrared field tuned between 1400 and 1600 cm^{-1} and a 532-nm pump field. This approach has broad applications, from coherent light generation to spectroscopic remote sensing and chemically specific imaging in microscopy.
Broadband coherent Raman scattering spectroscopy at 50,000,000 spectra/s

Abstract:Raman scattering spectroscopy is widely used as an analytical technique in various fields, but its measurement process tends to be slow due to the low scattering cross-section. In the last decade, various broadband coherent Raman scattering spectroscopy techniques have been developed to address this limitation, achieving a measurement rate of about 100 kSpectra/s. Here, we present a significantly increased measurement rate of 50 MSpectra/s, which is 500 times higher than the previous state-of-the-art, by developing time-stretch coherent Raman scattering spectroscopy. Our newly-developed system, based on a mode-locked Yb fiber laser, enables highly-efficient broadband excitation of molecular vibrations via impulsive stimulated Raman scattering with an ultrashort femtosecond pulse and sensitive time-stretch detection with a picosecond probe pulse at a high repetition rate of the laser. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we measure broadband coherent Stokes Raman scattering spectra of organic compounds covering the molecular fingerprint region from 200 to 1,200 cm-1. This high-speed broadband vibrational spectroscopy technique holds promise for unprecedented measurements of sub-microsecond dynamics of irreversible phenomena and extremely high-throughput measurements.

Abstract:We report a novel approach to coherent anti-Stokes spectroscopy based on multiple overtone resonances in both theory and experiment. A pump laser with the tunable wavelength at the near infrared range is used to excite the inner-band vibrational transition of the C-H stretching vibrations, commonly corresponding to biological molecules. Strong coherent signals with higher chemical specificity are observed in experiments. Our work points to a new route for applying resonantly enhanced nonlinear optical spectroscopy in the deeper tissue optical imaging with near infrared lasers, which is important for various biomedical applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate efficient Raman conversion to respective Stokes and anti-Stokes fields in both pulsed and continuous modes with a Rb-87 atomic vapor cell. The conversion efficiency is about 40-50% for the Stokes field and 20-30% for the anti-Stokes field, respectively. This efficient conversion process is realized with coherent feedback of both the Raman pump and the frequency-converted fields (Stokes or anti-Stokes). The experimental setup is simple and can be applied easily to produce light sources with larger frequency shifts using other Raman media with long coherence time. They may have potential applications in nonlinear optics, Raman spectroscopy and precision measurement.

Abstract:Coherent Raman microscopy provide label-free imaging by interrogating the intrinsic vibration of biomolecules. Nevertheless, trade-off between high chemical-specificity and high imaging-speed currently exists in transition from spectroscopy to spectroscopic imaging when capturing dynamics in complex living systems. Here, we present a novel concept in dual-comb scheme to substantially beat this trade-off and facilitate high-resolution broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopic imaging based on down-converted, automatically varying delay-time in spectral focusing excitation. A rapid measurement of vibrational microspectroscopy on sub-microsecond scale over a spectral span ~700 cm-1 with solid signal-to-noise ratio provides access to well-resolved molecular signatures within the fingerprint region. We demonstrate this high-performance spectroscopic imaging of spatially inhomogeneous distributions of chemical substances as well as the carotenoids accumulation in plant cells. This technique offers an unprecedented route for broadband CARS imaging with hundreds of kHz frame rate using available 1-GHz oscillators.
Coherent electron-vibron interactions in Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS)

Abstract:In this work we identify coherent electron-vibron interactions between near-resonant and non-resonant electronic levels that contribute beyond standard optomechanical models for off-resonant or resonance SERS. By developing an open-system quantum model using first molecular interaction principles, we show how the Raman interference of both resonant and non-resonant contributions can provide several orders of magnitude modifications of the SERS peaks with respect to former optomechanical models and over the fluorescence backgrounds. This cooperative optomechanical mechanism allows for generating an enhancement of nonclassical photon pair correlations between Stokes and anti-Stokes photons, which can be detected by photon-counting measurements. Our results demonstrate Raman enhancements and suppressions of coherent nature that significantly impact the standard estimations of the optomechanical contribution from SERS spectra and their quantum mechanical observable effects.

Abstract:Selective pumping and probing of highly excited states of molecules are essential in various studies but are also challenging because of high density of states, weak transition moments, and lack of precise spectroscopy data. We develop a comb-locked cavity-assisted double-resonance spectroscopy (COCA-DR) method for precision measurements using low-power continuous-wave lasers. A high-finesse cavity locked with an optical frequency comb is used to enhance both the pumping power and the probing sensitivity. As a demonstration, Doppler-free stepwise two-photon absorption spectra of CO2 were recorded by using two milliwatt diode lasers (1.60 and 1.67 mu m), and the rotation energies in a highly excited state (CO-stretching quanta = 8) were determined with an unprecedented accuracy of a few kilohertz.
Multi-wavelength lock-in spectroscopy for extracting perturbed spectral responses: molecular signatures in nanocavities

Abstract:Detecting small changes in spectral fingerprints at multiple wavelength bands simultaneously is challenging for many spectroscopic techniques. Because power variations, drift, and thermal fluctuations can affect such measurements on different timescales, high speed lock-in detection is the preferred method, however this is typically a single channel (wavelength) technique. Here, a way to achieve multichannel (multi-wavelength) lock-in vibrational spectroscopy is reported, using acousto-optic modulators to convert nanosecond periodic temporal perturbations into spatially distinct spectra. This simultaneously resolves perturbed and reference spectra, by projecting them onto different locations of the spectrometer image. As an example, we apply this multichannel time-resolved methodology to detect molecular frequency upconversion in plasmonic nanocavities from the perturbed Raman scattering at different wavelengths. Our phase-sensitive detection scheme can be applied to any spectroscopy throughout the visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges. Extracting perturbed spectra for measurements on nanosecond timescales allows for capturing many processes, such as semiconductor optoelectronics, high-speed spectro-electrochemistry, catalysis, redox chemistry, molecular electronics, or atomic diffusion across materials.
Coherent anti-Stokes hyper-Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:Coherent Raman scattering spectroscopies have been established as a powerful tool for investigating molecular systems with high chemical specificity. The existing coherent Raman scattering techniques detect only Raman active modes, which are a part of the whole molecular vibrations. Here, we report the first observation of coherent anti-Stokes hyper-Raman scattering (CAHRS) spectroscopy, which allows measuring hyper-Raman active vibrations at high speed. The CAHRS process relies on a fifth-order nonlinear process that combines hyper-Raman scattering with coherent Raman scattering. Observed signals are proven to come from the CAHRS process through various experiments concerning the dependences of the signals on incident laser powers, time-delay, polarizations, and selection rules of molecular vibrations. Comparisons of CAHRS signals with spontaneous hyper-Raman signals from para-nitroaniline solutions and benzene liquid manifest much higher signal-to-noise ratios of CAHRS signals than spontaneous hyper-Raman signals. This study illustrates that CAHRS spectroscopy can offer new information on molecular vibrations unobtainable from the present coherent Raman techniques at a much higher speed than spontaneous hyper-Raman spectroscopy.

Single-Fiber-Laser-Based Wavelength Tunable Excitation for Coherent Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:We demonstrate coherent Raman spectroscopy (CRS) using a tunable excitation source based on a single femtosecond fiber laser. The frequency difference between the pump and the Stokes pulses was generated by soliton self-frequency shifting in a nonlinear optical fiber. Spectra of C-H stretches of cyclohexane were measured simultaneously by stimulated Raman gain (SRG) and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) and compared. We demonstrate the use of spectral focusing through pulse chirping to improve CRS spectral resolution. We analyze the impact of pulse stretching on the reduction of power efficiency for CARS and SRG. Due to chromatic dispersion in the fiber-optic system, the differential pulse delay is a function of Stokes wavelength. This differential delay has to be accounted for when spectroscopy is performed in which the Stokes wavelength needs to be scanned. CARS and SRG signals were collected and displayed in two dimensions as a function of both the time delay between chirped pulses and the Stokes wavelength, and we demonstrate how to find the stimulated Raman spectrum from the two-dimensional plots. Strategies of system optimization consideration are discussed in terms of practical applications. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America
